These days, Facebook might be the last place you’d go for a taste of the sweet life. Social media is more likely to spike your blood pressure than your blood sugar. But it’s a pretty potent platform for launching a business or building a community. Foodies Jason Stoner is one of the mods at Foodies of Lafayette, a massive online community with more than 100,000 members. It’s now a nonprofit operated by Jason and the group’s founder, Heidi Jacobs MacDonald. Jason is also the chef and host of Sunday Dinners, a monthly dinner party that blends fine dining with good old-fashioned hospitality. Invitations are hard to come by at Sunday Dinners. There are just six spots at his dining room table, so it’s not uncommon for reservations to be auctioned off at local fundraisers. Jason is largely self-taught in the kitchen, sparked by the challenge of learning to cook for his kids. He grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and moved to Lafayette 15 years ago to be with his partner, Stephan. Cheesecake Seth Dahlen is owner of LA Cheesecake Bakery. Seth grew up in Perry and Abbeville and got his culinary start early, working in restaurants as a teenager. He fell for cheesecake while working at Black’s Café, where a coworker roped him into helping with dessert prep. That spark led to a slow, deliberate build—he and his wife started by selling cakes from their home and building a reputation through Facebook. By 2022, they opened a storefront in Lafayette. Now, he’s running a full-time bakery with a cult following, offering more than sixty flavors and even stocking a cheesecake vending machine at the mall. The adjuster is questioning if the windstorm deductible applies to the claim, despite the power outage being the direct cause of the spoilage.   Notable Timestamps [ 00:00 ] - The scenario presented involves a windstorm that caused a power outage, leading to spoiled cheesecakes and a claim for spoilage and lost business income, raising the central question of whether the windstorm deductible applies given the chain of events. [ 01:30 ] - Trivia: Where did the maximum natural wind gust ever recorded occur? [ 03:00 ] - The windstorm deductible endorsement states it applies to losses "caused directly or indirectly by windstorm or hail", but this language, even with "indirectly," can still lead courts to perform a proximate cause analysis, often leaving the "dominant and efficient cause" determination to a jury, unlike clearer anti-concurrent causation language. [ 04:30 ] - While "directly or indirectly" might address some indirect causation issues, the very definition of "windstorm" is not straightforward and is heavily subject to interpretation by courts based on specific case facts. I'm sure of all of us have heard of the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, right? Especially if ANY of us went to Church, or Thursday School...and how from just a few pieces of bread and a few fish, Jesus created a whole lotta abundance and food for a whole lotta people! Well my guest this week tells a story about her parents, but especially her Father, and his dedication and love for his Church. How he showed up, throughout his life, for everyone around him, and how his presence became the bedrock of that church. His life, his passion, his desire, was to lift others up, to be a witness for them, and to improve not only their lives, but by association, the lives of everyone else around them. He was a true minister to the people and included everyone, no matter who they were. Jeanne tells a story of what happened at her parent's memorial...which I have named "The Miracle of the Cheesecakes." Those who have passed before us come back to us in a myriad of ways, we just need to be open to their messages. Whether it's in dreams, in a wild animal showing up at our door, or through a message from a stranger, those who are gone want us to know that they are OK.
