It's our 45th episode of Broken Records and we're looking into the curious case of Fischerspooner, the electroclash duo and performance troupe formed in 1998 in Chicago after Warner Fischer and Casey Spooner met at school. #1 is the first full-length album by electroclash duo Fischerspooner released in 2001. It originally received a limited run on International DeeJay Gigolo Records, and contained "The 15th", a cover of a Wire song from their album 154. #1 has been re-pressed several times with a different track listing. The title "Fucker" was also censored on subsequent releases, either as "!@*$%#", "*#!@¥¿", or "*#!@Y?". "Sweetness", "L.A. Song" and "Megacolon", all from the re-issue were originally released together on an EP titled #1 Supplement that was discontinued in time for the first re-issue. A limited edition pressing from 2003 also included a DVD with several remixes, a documentary, as well as four videos—"Sweetness", "The 15th" and two versions of "Emerge". The album itself is … ok!?? Certainly not your usual Broken Records fare, so why oh why is #1 (working title ‘Best Album Ever') in our hatful of shit?
For over 20 years, Casey Spooner has pushed boundaries at the intersection of art, spectacle, and entertainment. When he first joined forces with his art school friend Warren Fischer in 1998, little did they know their multimedia project FISCHERSPOONER would capture the attention of the world. Making their debut at an East Village Starbucks, this outsized-glam duo soon found themselves topping the charts and accepting invitations to world renowned galleries and museums like the Guggenheim, Pompidou, and MoMA. Casey has always been a visionary artist whose work moves fluidly between music, film, photography, performance, and design, and now he's emerging as a solo artist with a new body of multimedia work entitled SPOONERHOLLYWOOD. Inspired by the pioneers of early filmmaking, SPOONERHOLLYWOOD is a conceptual artist studio with an eye towards the future, his mission being to build an empowered independent and financially self-sufficient creative class. And like everything else he does, he is steps ahead of the art and music worlds.

Episode 29 takes Sound Coalitions to Sydney, Australia, dipping into the sounds from queer artist M Ramirez. As a queer artist, Ramirez makes it a point to maintain visibility, promoting inspiration to other emerging queer artists worldwide. Speaking of a worldwide presence, Ramirez has recently returned from New York City pride where he played at a party called Barba with Casey Spooner. This isn't the first time Ramirez and Spooner have shared the decks; last year at Madrid Pride, the two met the company of Wolfram which is understood to be an iconic set between the three. In addition to his international pride appearances, Ramirez has been working on some notable productions, his first release in collaboration with Lauren Flax & The Carry Nation on NYC's Get Up Recordings. His second EP will be available soon, and has already received support from Flax and DJ Pierre as unreleased material, showing great promise. We are excited to have his art showcased here on Sound Coalitions, and hope you enjoy the next hour from M Ramirez. Fischerspooner began as a performance art piece in New York City at the end of the last century. They played their very first performance at a Manhattan Starbucks, which ultimately transformed into a spectacle that ushered in the electroclash scene. With the song "Emerge" they created one of the defining songs of that short-lived movement. This year they're back with Sir, their first new record in more than a decade. The highly personal album chronicles a tumultuous and emotionally fraught period of Casey Spooner’s life and was co-written and produced by REM's Michael Stipe. For this episode of Talk The Line, Casey tells Jen Long about the food experiences that shaped him. You can check out a full list of the places he recommends on our show notes blog at talktheline.blog.
Almost a decade since Fischerspooner's last album, Casey Spooner tells Greg Cochrane about being disillusioned with the music biz, swapping New York for Paris and making a new LP with his first boyfriend, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
