The exuberantly effervescent Jo Anne Worley, queen of the quip and paradigm of the pizzazz, turns our studio into a cabaret club this week, dazzling and delighting with stories of show biz daring do… her fearless stage style, her bold reach for brilliance, behind the scenes lore from the set of Laugh-In and a fabulous flurry of anecdotes and memories from an unrivaled career. The girl from Lowell, Indiana knew she was destined for the business when she distracted the most vicious teacher in her two-room schoolhouse with a hilarious crack that saved the hide of another student. After high school she hit the ground and then the train running out of her tiny town towards the Pickwick Players and a life in theater, where she literally ate the scenery, salting and snacking on a tomato during a key court scene in The Mikado.  Jo Anne built an all singing and dancing nightclub act because, at the time, women did not talk on stage. Her comic gifts so impressed Merv Griffin's wife, it lead to her frequent appearances with Merv on his show and a chance to audition for George Schlatter, creator of Laugh-In.Her iconic role on that revolutionary sketch show earned her a permanent spot in pop culture and entertainment history and she shares with us some deep insider info: How John Wayne gallantly lifted her down from the joke wall and that time a mime, Marcel Marceau, perfectly impersonated this vocally resonant performer without a sound. No one makes an entrance, or unleashes a song parody or lights into a Bob Hope story like Jo Anne Worley! So strap in for hilarity. What did Jo Anne say to Jerry Lewis to earn her spot in his comedy workshop? What's it like to share a fence with Jonathon Winters? And we've got a rollicking round of IMDB Roulette that serves as a masterclass in the glory days of entertainment. In recommendations--Weezy: Tetris, Apple TV+ Movie and The Tetris Murders doc Series on Max Fritz: Hulu Sitcom, Mid-Century Modern Path Points of Interest:Jo Anne Worley on WikiJo Anne Worley on IMDBActors and Others for AnimalsActors and Others for Animals Ebay ItemsBilly Barnes Bash at Catalina Jazz Club on April 27thRuta Lee's Birthday on May 30thTetris (The Movie)The Tetris Murders MId Century Modern on HuluMedia Path Podcast

Tom Bodrovics interviews Doug Casey in-person at his home in Argentina assisted by Ivor Cummins. Doug emphasizes the importance of focusing on areas like economics, history, science, self-improvement, and traveling to broaden perspectives amidst political uncertainties. He suggests that Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and the Southern Cone of South America could be ideal for relocation due to their civility, open spaces, low population density, and capacity for food security. Doug shares his affinity for Argentina, despite its political instability and frequent revolutions, and praises its culture, ranching, and potential for food security. Doug expresses dismay over U.S. politics and the nomination of Kamala Harris, labeling her 'stupid' and 'evil,' alleging communist leanings. He believes that a potential economic downturn might be preferable for societal rebuilding but fears the Democrats' potential power consolidation. Doug discusses the upcoming economic downturn's potential severity and longevity, comparing it to the Great Depression, due to the historic size of the financial bubble and vast debt accumulated by individuals and governments. He advocates for individual preparedness and self-reliance, advising listeners to learn new skills, acquire gold and silver, and speculate in markets. Doug also expresses optimism, suggesting humanity might explore other planets to overcome challenges and discusses the recent election's impact on Gold and Silver prices, maintaining their fundamentals despite short-term fluctuations. He disdains market distractions like meme stocks and advocates for gold miners due to their low valuation relative to historical standards. Talking Points From This Episode Doug Casey advocates for relocation to South America due to political instability and potential food security. He criticizes U.S. politics, particularly Kamala Harris, and predicts economic downturn and societal rebuilding. On this edition of Parallax Views, Prof. Emil Draitser returns to discuss his latest book Laughing All the Way to Freedom: The Americanization of a Russian Emigre. Growing up in a Jewish family in Soviet Union-era Odessa, Emil came to the United States in the 1970s and began a new life in America. His previous books Shush! Growing Up Jewish Under Stalin: A Memoir, Farewell, Mama Odessa: A Novel, and In the Jaws of the Crocodile: A Soviet Memoir are a trilogy that chronicles his experiences in both the Soviet Union and the U.S. Laughing All the Way to Freedom continues that exploration of Emil's experiences, specifically as an emigre. What does it mean to be an emigre from another land with a different culture? And when does one truly become American, in a cultural sense, once they've settled in the U.S.? In this conversation we discuss issues that face emigres like culture shock, Russian humor and Emil's appearance on the Merv Griffin show discussing the subject of Russian humor, working as a satirical writer in Russia, the power of humor to soften barriers between people, the Russian bombing of Odessa and Emil's feelings of PTSD over the Russo-Ukrainian war, what does Americanization mean and what is the road to Americanization, mass emigration from the Soviet Union and the parallels with the biblical story of Exodus, how Americans born of Russian descent view America and the differences between their understanding of America and their parents' understanding of America, America's core values as understood by a Russian emigre, the concept of freedom and law in relation to both America and Russia, and much, much more.

Della Reese (1931-2017) was a singer, talk show host, actor, ordained minister, and much more. Her career, which spanned seven decades, was marked by faith, resilience, and her ability to break barriers in predominantly white and male-dominated industries.  In 1969, Ms. Reese made history as the first black woman to host her own talk show. Almost more variety show than talk show, every episode offered an entertaining mix of sketch comedy, music, and interviews.  Before her own talk show, Ms. Reese established herself as a prominent television personality by appearing and performing on shows led by Merv Griffin, Ed Sullivan, Phil Donahue, and Johnny Carson. In fact, she was chosen as the first black woman to sub for Johnny Carson as host of the Tonight Show. But aside from her earlier accomplishments, Ms. Reese is perhaps best known to today's audiences for her popular television series, “Touched by an Angel,” where she appeared with Roma Downey, John Dye, Valerie Bertinelli, and a guest cast that featured many of the biggest names in television and film. In her 1997 memoir, “Angels Along the Way: My Life with Help from Above,” Ms. Reese reflects on the challenges she faced and overcame throughout her life, including racism and financial exploitation, while maintaining a steadfast commitment to helping others. Doug is widely respected as one of the preeminent authorities on “rational speculation,” especially in the high-potential natural resource sector. Doug wrote the book on profiting from periods of economic turmoil: his book Crisis Investing spent weeks as #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and became the best-selling financial book of 1980 with 438,640 copies sold; surpassing big-caliber names, like Free to Choose by Milton Friedman, The Real War by Richard Nixon, and Cosmos by Carl Sagan. He has been a featured guest on hundreds of radio and TV shows, including David Letterman, Merv Griffin, Charlie Rose, Phil Donahue, Regis Philbin, Maury Povich, NBC News, and CNN; has been the topic of numerous features in periodicals such as Time, Forbes, People, and the Washington Post; and is a regular keynote speaker at FreedomFest, the world's largest gathering of free minds. Charles Knight is young, but he knows right from wrong. He's well educated because he decided to drop out of high school, and considered college a misallocation of both his time and money. Instead, he reads and listens, works and creates. He figured out that you can't become a Renaissance Man by sitting in a classroom. Charles Knight is a modern Count of Monte Cristo, the sort of hero we haven't seen since Atlas Shrugged. He is a leader, but with no interest in leading. A soldier of fortune who tries to avoid fighting. He becomes rich, famous, powerful, loved–and hated. He changes the course of world history as he follows his code. Join Charles Knight on his quest to live a good life, an exotic life, a life of adventure. It all starts with Speculator. –This text refers to the paperback edition. Assassin: Book 3 of the High Ground Novels Charles Knight is released from an especially unpleasant stay in prison, only to rejoin a society overwhelmed by looting, riots, arson, viral panic, mob-think and economic decay . . . with a presidential election in the balance. The cronies are in charge, abetted by their media lackeys and political puppets. They'll do anything to get what they want. How can Charles stop the deadly crimes committed by those who control the law, print the money, and confuse the minds of the people? Crimes that push millions into poverty, servitude and ignorance. Will a highly unorthodox presidential candidate and a cryptocurrency network that turns the surveillance state on its head be enough to expose and defeat them? What a time it was. The surprise of Sputnik in the early fifties led to a space race, a technological competition that had a profound impact on popular music (not to mention popular culture), providing musicians (and would-be musicians) a rich source of inspiration and contributed to some of the most iconic, as well as comic and out of this world, songs of the era. Themes of space travel, the moon and Mars, and even flying saucers were rampant on the airwaves. And one can only ascribe the fear of aliens to the number attempted novelty bits that reflected that trepidation.  Laughter is, after all, a natural way for fear to be released in humankind. This week we'll be sharing some of the classics, as well as the unknowns, including Jesse Belvin & His Space Riders, The Drivers, Merv Griffin, The Big Bopper, Dave & The Detomics and quite a few more that even if we were to share their names, you'd probably scratch your head anyway. Drop in for some head-spinning, foot-tapping sounds from the era of the Space Race.

Grab some confetti and settle in to meet Rip Taylor -- The King of Confetti! A flamboyant slinger of "rim shot" jokes, Rip initially punctuated his act with exaggerated crying when his gags bombed. Ed Sullivan was a fan (he booked him over 20 times) and dubbed Rip "The Crying Comedian". Much later when bombing on the Merv Griffin show, instead of crying Rip was moved to tear up his joke cards and toss them in the air like confetti. The audience went nuts and from then on it was confetti instead of crying -- and a career that saw long runs in Las Vegas, many game and talk show appearances, and supporting film roles including Indecent Proposal (a rare dramatic turn) and Wayne's World (a great comedic turn). As always find more clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Rip? The New York Times once described Rip as a cross between Captain Kangaroo and Liberace, wound up to warp factor 7. On Wednesday October 9th, 1957 at 8PM eastern time, The Bill Kemp Show took to the air over ABC. Bill Kemp was born on July 10th, 1921 in Toronto, Canada. An up and coming performer in the 1950s, his daily radio show ran weeknights at 8PM. His show was the final in a twelve-hour daily live broadcast project by ABC called “The Live and Lively Radio Network.” ABC's intention was to raise ratings by going back to live broadcasts in an era of taped shows. Interestingly, it was ABC that helped launch the non-Mutual Broadcasting transcribed primetime era with Bing Crosby's Philco Radio Time in 1946. Kemp's show featured an orchestra, vocalist and guest stars such as Jonathon Winters. Kemp's announcer George Ansbro remembered that Kemp once went laugh for laugh with Winters after a particularly successful broadcast, and continued the antics all the way to a nearby steakhouse. Unfortunately, Kemp also developed a debilitating drinking problem. Merv Griffin and Jim Backus were called on several occasions to cover for Kemp during absences for "personal reasons." One week after this broadcast on Wednesday October 16th, Queen Elizabeth II departed from Ottawa and arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia. The next day she was in Washington, D.C. While at the White House, Prince Philip received the gold medal of the National Geographic Society. On October 18th, two U.S. Navy balloonists flew to an altitude of sixteen miles, landing near Hermansville, Michigan. On October 19th, the Queen and Prince Philip attended an American football game in College Park, Maryland, and then visited a supermarket in West Hyattsville. That same day a beauty pageant winner was killed en route to her coronation in a helicopter crash in Farmingdale, New York, while Montreal Canadiens' star Maurice “The Rocket” Richard became the first player in National Hockey League history to score five-hundred career goals.

Doug is a prominent anarcho-capitalist philosopher, speculator, and best-selling author, and today he talks about the concept of anarcho-capitalism and what led him to this belief system. As Ayn Rand was an influential factor in taking him to this moral and economic standpoint, he soon recognized that she hadn't gone far enough and stumbled across the 'Market for Liberty'. According to Doug, this is an explanation of society without government, and his main point is that 'politics is the practical application of ethics in a society.' In addition, he argues that the state itself is evil, destructive and redundant; instead, it is the real enemy that needs to be battled, not just replacing 'bad guys' in office. Continuing, Doug suggests that the majority of laws are silly and harmful, as they are designed solely for the benefit of those who create them. To his mind, the key principle should be to 'do as thou wilt, but be prepared for the ensuing consequences' – with a collective focus on taking responsibility. Transitioning on, Doug remarks on how the general public view the state as some sort of 'saviour of the masses'; a faith-based construct. Furthermore, he states that there has been a noticeably declining morality throughout the Western world, which is indicative of a coming catastrophic event. Doug also covers his book series, and how the protagonist, Charles Knight, develops and shifts as time passes. Not to be forgotten, Doug brings to light how these days, it's hard to find anyone that is genuinely interested in anything remotely existential – noting how the public are mainly focused on trivial affairs and think that the 'Federal Reserve' is some sort of omnipotent power. Therefore, he emphasizes how novels offer an opportunity to delve deep into topics that are usually a little too tricky and challenging for everyday conversation. Talking Points From This Episode Why politics is inherently immoral and why laws and terms like legal or illegal have little to do with ethics. The 'Market for Liberty' is an explanation of a society without a government, and politics is the practical application of ethics in a society. How novels provide a useful platform to explore topics that are usually too difficult to discuss in an everyday context. Doug is widely respected as one of the preeminent authorities on "rational speculation," especially in the high-potential natural resource sector. Doug's most recent book, "Assassin," can be found on Amazon. He has been a featured guest on hundreds of radio and TV shows, including David Letterman, Merv Griffin, Charlie Rose, Phil Donahue, Regis Philbin, Maury Povich, NBC News, and CNN; has been the topic of numerous features in periodicals such as Time, Forbes, People, and the Washington Post. Doug has lived in 10 countries and visited over 175. Today you're most likely to find him at La Estancia de Cafayate (Casey's Gulch), an oasis tucked away in the high red mountains outside Salta, Argentina.

This Is Jeopardy! The Story of America’s Favorite Quiz Show

It was 1979 and Jeopardy! was going off the air… again. Merv Griffin had tried to revive it after the original run was canceled. Art Fleming was still at the helm. But daytime soaps were dominating the airwaves and the fate of the quiz show was uncertain. In 1984, however, a syndication deal brought Jeopardy! back… for a third time! And things were different. There was a new set, a new synthy-sound, and most importantly, a brand new host. In this episode, we meet the man behind the lectern at the beginning of his Jeopardy! career, Canada's answer to Dick Clark, the one and only Alex Trebek. And we learn how he and the Jeopardy! revival found their sea legs together.
