It's Claire Delaney who joins Alexa this week to give us a tour behind the scenes of working on the ITV show ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream', the search for Sophie and Sky. Claire is a vocal coach with a private business and also teaches at UK Drama School Italia Conti. She initially trained in Opera, performing at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall, and now works with singers of all skill levels from beginners to West End professionals. To celebrate the winners of ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream' and their West End debut, Claire is here to give us the gossip on how she landed this TV job, what her role entailed on the program, and how we can help our theatre performers navigate auditions. KEY TAKEAWAYS "Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream'' premiered on ITV in October 2023. The program followed the quest for two fresh and undiscovered talents in musical theatre, aiming to cast them in the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand for the West End rendition of the musical "Mamma Mia!". If you or one of your students are thinking about applying for a TV show like this in the future, Claire believes you need to be strong in the following areas: story telling, working collaboratively, creating chemistry, having the endurance to perform 9 shows a week, and not taking yourself too seriously. In previous "Mamma Mia!" shows, it was understood that straight tone was desired over vibrato. However this more traditional approach didn't appear to be the case in the TV show. Claire loves vibrato because it adds colour and a feeling of release in the voice. As a teacher you need to make sure your student can do both so they can use whichever they think is right for them. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel like having worked on TV now it adds to my credibility' ‘It's not Shakespeare, it's pure entertainment and just joyous' ‘The key to any audition is to do your background development on the character' ‘My best advice is just be cheeky and ask, the worst anyone can say is no and not everybody will say no' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: https://www.delaneycoaching.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @Claire.delaney.coach Tik Tok: Claire_TheVocalCoach Relevant Links & Mentions: Fiona McDougal: https://fionamcdougal.com/ London School of Musical Theatre: https://www.lsmt.co.uk/ Italia Conti Arts: https://www.italiaconti.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 91 How to Help Prepare Singers for Drama School Auditions with Michael Vickers Songs mentioned: Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls; Trustfall by Pink; Somebody To Love from We Will Rock You; Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer; Shivers by Ed Sheeran; Night Fever from Saturday Night Fever Vocology in Practice: https://www.vocologyinpractice.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST Claire Delaney is a professional voice coach and currently teaches at Italia Conti. In 1980, Queen was on top of the world. Their eighth album The Game went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust" topped the Hot 100. At the time, late director Saul Swimmer approached the band about making a possible concert film. When Queen performed at the Montreal Forum in Canada in 1981 on November 24 and 25, Swimmer captured the band in all their essence for Queen Rock Montreal. Originally released in 1981, the film has been digitally remastered for the first time for IMAX and will run for a limited time from January 18 through 21. The film showcases Queen at their apex with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon performing through a ferocious 26-song setlist featuring "We Will Rock You," "Somebody To Love," and the live debut of "Under Pressure," along with "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Are The Champions," and many more. In 2007, nearly 30 years since the concert film premiered, the live album recording from the Montreal Forum dates, Queen Rock Montreal, was also released. In the late 1970s, Walt "Wally" Versen was recruited along with five of his fellow football players from Northwestern College to work as the band's security on their tour. "For the six of us, an already extraordinary journey took an unbelievable veer into the world of biggest-time rock and roll," said Verson, who has remained friends with Brian May and is executive producing the upcoming documentary Play the Game: A Jock N Roll Story. The security guard was also at the Montreal concert in '81 and captured never-before-seen images of the band from his point of view backstage. Versen also played into Mercury's stage theatrics. Mercury would oftentimes come on stage on the shoulders of security guards dressed as Superman and other characters in costume. Dressed as Darth Vader, Versen once carried Mercury out on his shoulders.

Ultimate Jams Expert Scott OKen comes back on the podcast to talk the music of Queen. We go through their discography and talk favorite Queen albums and songs. We each talk about our Ultimate 45-minute Playlist and go into some deep Queen cuts. We discuss Freddie Mercury and Brian May's place in music history. And then, we talk the Ultimate Rock Pantheon and its many levels. What bands are charter members of the First Pantheon? Second Pantheon? Third? And who does NOT belong? Is Boston a member of the First Pantheon? (HINT: Yes) We talk this and more on the newest Jagbags. TURN IT UP LOUD!!
Beave and Len walk through the band originally known as Jefferson Airplane, and trace it through its evolution to Jefferson Starship and then eventually Starship. Are they an underrated band? Was Grace Slick in fact the most badass rock star of them all? What are their best songs? Is Starship even worthy of discussion? What is their all-time best album? Did you know they also did a rooftop concert in New York? Why was Grace Slick ultimately thrown out of the band? All these questions get answered and more! Put a little Jagabsg in your ear.

Our theme music is by DJ Sparkz. INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT Anaid: Welcome to Power Your Story. I'm Anaid. Today we are talking about Flow XS. Flow XS is a dance group. It's just Kevin and Michael. They are just brothers from Toronto, Canada. I first found out about them because they were in a Disney movie, Zombies 1 and 2, and I see the background dancers and they're so amazing. I look them up on Instagram first. There was somebody from that movie who posted a picture and I just commented on that picture and then Flow XS liked my comment. Ms K: Anaid, I think you spend a lot of time on Instagram. Do you love being on Instagram? Anaid: Yeah. Ms K: Tell us what you like about it. Anaid: I like the filters. I like, I dunno, there's something about Instagram that I like. When I'm commenting on posts, I feel happy. I watch Flow XS on YouTube. They dance mostly to hip hop music. Ms K: Why do you think they're special? What do you think it is about when they dance that makes them different than other dancers? Anaid: I think they have a different flow and unique, and that's what I like about them. One day I will love to see them perform in person. Ms K: So for you, you have a disability that would make it pretty difficult for you to move your body in the same way that they move their bodies. Probably even I could not move my body in the same way that they move their bodies. Because like you said, it's really unique and they've probably put in a lot of hard work. Anaid: Yeah, I wish I could dance like that. Ms K: Is there any physical activity that you have done, that you really enjoy? Anaid: Standing up. When I can stand up, I feel strong. I have a brain tumor. It makes it difficult to walk. And when I see other people dance, I wanna do that. Sometimes I DM people I follow, but I don't hear back. It doesn't really matter. I have made friends on Instagram who like bands. When I first got my Instagram account, I was 18 or 17 years old. I waited for a lot of years. I think it's because my disability doesn't, like, respond really quick. Ms K: And how did it feel when you first started using Instagram? Anaid: I was happy. Ms K: Right away, you loved it? Anaid: Yeah. Ms K: I'm wondering cuz you've seen some movies and some performances and Flow XS – when I looked at their website, they've been in a ton of different things. Do you have, like, a favorite video or a favorite performance you've seen of theirs? Anaid: There's this YouTube video. Ms K: Mm-hmm. Anaid: It was like a class and they were teaching us how to dance to “Somebody To Love” by Justin Bieber and Usher. Ms K: So it's a class and they're teaching you how to dance to “Somebody To Love”? Anaid: Yeah. I like how they're teaching us step by step. I go over the steps in my mind. It made me feel happy. I think listeners should check out Flow XS because they are the best dancers. I think it will make you feel good and happy. My name is Anaid. Go check out Flow XS and thank you for listening.

The wheel kindly gave us our first song from (the UK release of) Greatest Hits this week and we were pretty excited to talk about this one! Turns out, Freddie Mercury could really sing! We also find out that Randy was categorically wrong last week and the poll backed up that assertion. This episode, "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," celebrates a resident from the ABLA (a group of public housing projects consisting of the Jane Addams Homes, Robert Brooks Homes, Loomis Courts, and Grace Abbott Homes) community, the late Mr. Wilbur Farley. If that name sounds familiar, perhaps it is because he has appeared many times in different ABLA oral histories we have gathered. Known as “Mr. Fix-It” for his ingenuity and helping neighbors with small repairs, Mr. Farley was such a hugely influential and important member of the community that “Mr. Farley Day Back to School Celebration and Party” (as it was originally called) was created in 1984 by the ABLA community. The oral history narrators featured in this episode are Al Buford, who lived in the Jane Addams Homes from 1955 until 1990, Marquita Gandy, who lived in ABLA from 1973 to 2009, Godfrey Bey, who lived in the Jane Addams Homes from 1956 to 1983, and Byron Dickens, our next narrator lived in the Jane Addams Homes from 1966 to 2001. Read the transcript here. CORRECTION: The narration of this episode states that Marquita Gandy lived in the Jane Addams Homes from 1973 to 2009. The episode notes have been edited to reflect the correction, that Marquita Gandy lived in the greater ABLA Homes complexes from 1973 to 2009. All but one of the buildings of the Jane Addams Homes were demolished between 2002-2008; the last remaining building is being preserved for the National Public Housing Museum's permanent site thanks to efforts by ABLA resident activists. If you have ever uttered this phrase, this is your episode. I have certainly stated this many times during my life so far because no one really explained how love works. We learn about love first from our parents and then from all of the life experiences that follow. We learn about love through the ways that others treat us. What we don't learn is where love really comes from, and I'm here to remedy that. I will also share one of the most impactful ways to shift your perspective when you are dealing with other humans that can absolutely strengthen your relationships.
