After a self care break here at Sound Coalitions, we're back! And we brought with us an opening club set by emerging Bay Area artist Clarity. Clarity(she/they/it)is a techno DJ originating from London, with current roots in the Bay Area. She engaged the art of DJing during the pandemic, doubling down on a deep love of the rave culture from her European home base. With this consolidation of passion and mixing, she's podcasted for stations across Europe and the world including FOLD, Instruments of Discipline, Erotic Sentimentalism, HRA Berlin, Dusk Records, Singularity LA, DaisyChain, Techno's Children, and Speedmaster Records. It is clear her sound resonates with the tastes of listeners, and this live recording can attest. Simply put, Clarity works with an undulating mix of tracks that are hard, fast, trippy and at times, perhaps spiritual to some ears. She is resident of London's warehouse series @rave.signal and played for fabulous queer focused/friendly parties including @h_t_b_x @riposte.london @ggi.club @musa.platform @planetfunasmr @hedonistfest @she.they.dj We thank Clarity for the gift of this mix and hope you listeners enjoy the next hour and half. As one of the founding members of Fog City Pack, resident of San Francisco's monthly disco party DAD, and newest resident of one of SF's longest running fetish nights, Stank, Joe Weidman (a.k.a. Jumpr) has spent the last several years striving to create unique, inclusive, exciting experiences for the SF queer and leather communities not just as a DJ but also as the Creative Director of Fog City Pack. He prides himself on being a dance floor filler, agnostic of genre, spinning everything from sweaty bathhouse disco to throbbing techno bangers. Jumpr wants to bring the rush and keep the energy ecstatic. This mix is downright chunky-thick with it's build of heavy bass intertwined with 80's new wave selections. It lands as well crafted with basslines nicely pairing between tracks-a moment to breathe before the next chapter of seedy, bouncing rhythm. The reflection of community support Jumpr provides is evident with this sound- while not easily defined in sound per-say, it's certainly felt through every layer of latex, leather, and mesh from listeners. WHOA. Kristian Moreno may simultaneously mix two tracks fine tuning the timing and beat sequence and oddly enough, not even GAF and make something sound amazing. This multidisciplinary artist specializes in an open format style when DJing but brings influence from their more than a decade long exposure to goth, punk, techno, and new wave. Their unique sound was developed in part by exposure of many kinds -experience of multiple cultures, a bit of drugs, a lot of music, and a general anti-status quo foundation. Having residencies across the Northern Californian cities and developing their radio podcast transmissions under the demonic-pseudonym “DJ BoogyFrights,” Moreno is continuing their growth in music and expression. They're also balancing cultivation of the band “Provoker” who just signed to “YEAR0001” from Scandinavia. These original dynamics now known, Moreno's work speaks for itself and it is certainly an entertaining and well mixed hour ride. Thanks a lot Kristian; it is so good to see you develop as an artist and we know the next decade holds true promise to your craft. https://soundcloud.com/valleyghoul -C&C

Do you ever notice how some musicians have a style that is reminiscent of the music they play? Chelsea is one of these people. Quirky and fun, yet perfectly put together in its entirety. Pieces so rare that the only way to know their origin is to ask, and even then, you don't wear it like she does! Chelsea's record selection makes you feel the same- she pulls tracks that send you feeling vibes/memories of your past, and puts them together in a way the creates a storyline from a fantasy. That is the mark of an artist who has found her niche. Christopher Foor first experienced this quality of Chelsea's at Gays Hate Techno in 2017. Ten am, dreamy disco and new wave sounds, a hangover from early morning shenanigans, and a set that transitioned listeners from their morning headspace into an afternoon as beautiful as the golden air of Northern California. His first party, Nightdrive, would later on be Christened as the name for a popular music blog. Next, he would work with the Safe parties that rocked the Electric Pickle. He also created Klangbox.fm that showcases artists and their mixes from inside a renovated AirStream RV, and currently books for the Extra Credit parties at Floyd, part of Club Space. In addition to these parties that he curates, he's a resident at the Citadel Miami, and The Standard Hotel Miami Beach. Patrick's music library holds many rare and beautiful gems from the disco and nudisco genres. His sets have a consistency of being fun, dancey, free, and accented by intelligent timing for mixing in a way that plays one track's strength off the other. In addition to his curation and DJ'ing, Patrick is an ally for LGBTQ+, women, non-binary artists, and people of color. He actively works to promote a diverse sound and background of the artists he books for the parties he created. His strong dedication to providing spaces for alternative genres to exist in Miami is complemented by his kind and down to earth demeanor. Christopher Foor is proud to feature his friend Fawks and the Fog City Pack on Sound Coalitions. Fawks and Christopher have been friends for five years, meeting at the Power House bar in SF and other Bay Area kink events. Since their introduction, Christopher admired Fawks' and the pack's devotion to hard work, creative thought, and strategic planning to add something more to the San Francisco music and kink scene- the Fog City Pack. The Fog City Pack has been making waves throughout the BDSM/kink scene including a recent feature in the New York Times and re-envisioned electronic music events. They’ve procured a variety of headlining artists such as DJ Holographic, Jackie House, Clark Price, Brian Rojas, while being backed by residents Fawks, Astro, and Jumpr. Their events create safe places for play, support for kink/BDSM subculture, and quality music from a wide variety of artists and performers. Most notable and perhaps impressive about the group and Fawks, is their kindness and devotion to one another, music, and the scene. Their events and presence simply feel welcome, authentic, and eye opening in the best way. With the waves they’ve been making, it is with deep gratitude we feature Fawks' work on Sound Coalitions. Miami is internationally recognized for it's electronic music and parties. From Miami Music Week, to Ultra Music Festival, Art Basel and more, Miami has set a standard to the quality and immensity of productions it holds in the United States scene. However, Miami tends to focus on house, minimal, and EDM. Supporting Left field house and techno genres, not to mention ambient or drum and bass, can be challenging for promoters, clubs, and artists alike. Sound Coalitions would like to showcase Ray Nicholes, a Miami local techno talent, as an individual that is bringing a direct passion for techno to the Miami scene. Christopher Foor met Ray at an Assimilate gig at Treehouse Nightclub in Miami in the autumn. Talking outside the club for hours after the show, Christopher and Ray discussed the difficulties, strengths, oddities, and potentials Miami presents as a city with deficits in certain genres of electronic music, but more importantly, what to do to switch this up. The passion/openness to ideas in terms of bonds between straight-ally and LGBTQ+ communities in electronic music that Ray presented were warm, grounded, and forward thinking. In addition to the ally ship and energetic demeanor of Ray, he's also a skilled artist with a multi-genre background influencing his musical ability. Ray presented us with a two and a half hour mix, artfully utilizing four CDJ's the entire mix to blend the mid's-harmony, baseline, and highs from one chapter to the next. Hedda Stenberg is a full time DJ joining Sound Coalitions from Stockholm, Sweden. Hedda’s music comes to us simply from exploring SoundCloud and being curious about her profile. Once we took a listen to her mixes, our focus quickly noted the suave mixing, excellent track choice, and story telling quality that embodies her work on every set. We decided to reach out and learn more about the artist, and this is where Hedda’s kindness and tenacity to bring more women into the DJ scene became apparent. Over the last few years, Hedda has been part of PM Sessions, a Stockholm female collective that organized quality parties and promoted women into the DJ scene. She held a residency at club F12 in Stockholm where she assisted Aftermath Management with bookings and curating artists from across the city. Hedda is also a regular at the world renown Kvarteret where she has played alongside artists like DJ Tennis, Omar S., B. Traits, and DJ Seinfeld. Hedda is optimistic and engaged to make 2019 her best year yet and with the mix she sent us, we feel her flow and clarity in her style will take her there. Big thanks to Hedda- we know the scene in Stockholm and across Europe appreciates your quality work and mindset to bring more women into electronic music. Starting off 2019, we take a spotlight on New York City's DJ PlayPlay. PlayPlay initially reached out to us for an opportunity to do a guest mix; our first listen to their productions and mixes ended with an immediate "Yes, absolutely feature this work". Mixes and productions featuring samples of known work intermixed with genre bending beats gave hint towards a deeper drive in PlayPlay's music. The real delicacy of an artist's drive like that of PlayPlay's comes from the diverse angles to which they approach understanding music: academia and teaching of the art of DJing, research in oppressed communities and dance music, activism and expansion of female and gender non-conforming artists, an expansive multi-genre understanding of music, and residency at Queen's Flux Factory where these factors are utilized to instill an informed approach to their mixes. In addition to their current residency at Flux Factory, you can find PlayPlay's work on Knightwerk records, Worst Behavior, and Cybersonic LA. We thank PlayPlay not only for their wonderful mix, but for their depth in approach to the art of music and culture itself. These elements are deeply understood by this artist and presented in a clear, beautiful, and intricate manner. Daria Lourd (aka Bored Lord) is a Memphis born multidisciplinary and versatile artist. Daria formed roots in electronic music with production, notably her latest release on Knightwerk records. Her DJing skill was defined when she joined forces with the underground rave community in Oakland, California. With a recent relocation to Los Angeles, Daria has been churning out club ready and euphoric tracks on her personal Bandcamp as well as contributing remixes for other artists and labels. For Daria's guest mix on Sound Coalitions, her intention for the mix was "... trying to channel a struggle between euphoria and anger through a rave ready medium. I want it to be something you can put on while get ready to go to the club or drive around while high with your friends. But also I want you to be able to put headphones on and release a deeper emotion. I don't think I know how to make art that isn't both reflective of how I feel and how I view the world. Times are dark and the tone of a lot of the mix can reflect that. Darkness is also something that makes light that much brighter too, and in that sense, the tone can make better room for more euphoric tracks. But let's be real, at the end of the day it's just club tracks. Fucking dance to it." We are deeply appreciative of Daria's dedication to electronic music through her productions and mixing, her dedication to LGBTQ community via support and advocation, and her down to earth yet kind hearted nature which made featuring her work an easy choice. We've been following their sounds since and have been consistently impressed with the suave, sexy grooves. Kora's vinyl sets are a standout.
