Pride is here, and while the political landscape may feel unstable and our rights constantly under siege, one truth remains: the LGBTQ community will always find a way to throw a damn good party. Or, as the Scissor Sisters cheekily reminded us, “Let's Have a Kiki.” Reimagining the Classics Originally, the plan was to freshen up this year's edition with newer remixes of iconic gay anthems. But after diving headfirst into a sea of fanmade bootlegs — many of which ranged from barely passable to downright unlistenable — I realized that over the years, I had already assembled the best of the best. So, instead of chasing ghosts, I shifted gears and pulled together what I consider to be the most powerful, energetic, and expertly crafted versions of these beloved tracks that had already been immortalized in digital form. The Ultimate Essentials Some songs were no-brainers — standout mixes that continue to dominate queer dancefloors year after year. Others posed a challenge, with multiple excellent interpretations vying for a spot. In those cases, I went with what worked best in the mix and what kept the momentum flowing. Sadly, a few favorites didn't make the final cut, not because they weren't worthy, but because they didn't quite fit this year's energy. That's always the hardest part — deciding what to keep and what to let go. In the end, what you're getting is a tightly crafted experience: essential gay anthems from as far back as the '70s, reinvented with a modern edge that will hit just right for Millennials and Gen Z — and likely give Gen X and Boomers a reason to raise a glittery eyebrow and smile. These aren't just remixes — they're reinventions that breathe new life into songs that already had a heartbeat of their own. A Community Effort I want to give a massive shoutout to Hans, who responded to my call for suggestions with enthusiasm and insight. While I already had most of his picks in the archive, and only a couple made the final mix, his contribution helped steer the direction and is greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I did you proud, Hans. World Pride, Doctor's Orders, and a Delayed Drop World Pride reaches its grand finale this weekend in Washington, D.C., which feels a bit off-kilter since it typically wraps up toward the end of June. I had fully intended to get these sets out much earlier, but between deep diving into remix archives and juggling an endless cycle of doctor's appointments (check recent posts for that saga), time slipped through my fingers like glitter in a windstorm. She worked closely with Baz Luhrmann as the voice of Misty Holloway on the Netflix show “The Get Down.” Bridget has released singles with the House DJ/producer legend Todd Terry as well as numerous of her own singles. As a child actress, she has appeared in countless commercials and Sesame Street. She has starred in HBO's Everyday People, Sherrybaby, Redacted, God's Pocket, Steven Soderbergh's The Knick and had a recurring role as a one-legged “hooker” on Law & Order: SVU. On stage, Barkan has appeared in numerous productions including Dog Sees God and alongside Lea Michelle in a workshop of Spring Awakening.  "Heartbroken Ones” was a practice in healing, purging, and processing what Barkan was going through. “It helped me get through one of the worst moments of my life. It was the acceptance I was singing to myself,” Barkan explains. “All that mattered was releasing the pain that this indiscretion had caused.” Working with producer Austin Bello (Nikki Pope, FNKHOUSER, Goldvein) again  who worked on her previous single “Good Things” and singer songwriter Poet Hawkins, she crafted the song in “a more old soul approach at first. But then I kept listening to my friend Natti Vogel's song ‘FAB (Free Ass Bitch),' which also was a healing song, which had a more pop and synth based energy, so we went in that direction, instead. We took parts of a voice memo and created a soundscape which really captured the inner world I was in.” A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through life, love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let's Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic's crew. Having inherited her father's knack for songwriting, Bridget's intrinsic artistry and talent is a legacy she proudly carries. *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Today I'm joined by returning guest musician turned comics writer Scott Hoffman. Scott has been on twice before promoting his other projects Wag and Nostalgia and he's got a new book hitting shelves with DSTLRY called Warm Fusion, a futuristic sci fi/horror about a bleak New York future and the pitfalls of biotech gone wrong. We talk about the motivations behind this exciting new book, getting ready for a Spring Tour in the UK with his band the Scissor Sisters, and a unique vinyl record collaboration associated with the book with DJ Hi-Tek of Die Antwoord. From the publisher DSTLRY, the next-generation publisher redefining creator-owned comics and collectibles, is thrilled to announce Warm Fusion, a new sci-fi horror mystery series by writer Scott Hoffman (Nostalgia, Wag, member of pop icons Scissor Sisters) and artist Alberto Ponticelli (Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Orc Island). The series will debut this December, plunging readers into a nightmarish vision of New York City as biotech corporations unleash atrocities to rival the serial killers stalking the night.  Half a century into the future, New York City has been devastated by crime, ongoing storms, residual radiation from a terrorist attack, and genetic mutations spurred by the medical innovations created in response. After a series of murders rip through the city's brothels, an escort named Vin Young, who cosplays as the Brothers Grimm's Snow White—and is one of the generation of deformed victims—pursues the killer, or killers, reluctantly joining forces with Jarrod Hannover, the lone cop assigned to the case. The two eventually arrive at a biotech megacorp developing a cellular metal called Warm Fusion—a pioneering technology meant to replace prosthetics limbs—and soon confront the sociopathic scientist Nicholas Fleischer, his monstrous alter-ego, Mr. Barnaby, and the hideous monster that he's been secretly developing. Warm Fusion combines the visceral body horror of David Cronenberg with the dystopian urban sprawl of Blade Runner, offering a chilling experience for fans of sci-fi benchmarks including Videodrome, The Thing, and RoboCop. “Warm Fusion is a deep dive into the grotesque possibilities of biotechnology and its impact on humanity,” says writer Scott Hoffman. “Alberto Ponticelli's art is transportive, blurring the lines between flesh, machine, and everyone caught in the gutters between. This is an evolution of the body horror classics I watched growing up, and perfect for a time when humanity is obsessed with (and achieving) provocative new levels of post-humanism.” PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. "Unbreakable Heart" The Texas-born Amber Martin has no regrets. The singer/songwriter has lived quite a life and it's one that found her moving coast to coast in the name of art. But geography aside, Martin moves relentlessly forward and doesn't look back with revisionist repentance. She'll tell you all about that, so let me fill you in on the other stuff. A brilliant and powerful singer with precise phrasing and improvisational smarts, Martin is a force of nature, her live shows punctuated by comedic tales, observational stories and a classic cabaret sensibility. Her career has a lot of highlights, so let me give you a partial list: She opened for Joan Rivers, sang with Sandra Berhnard, recorded with the Scissor Sisters, performed on Broadway, had several solo art residencies and starred in the live variety show Cassette Roulette with the Tony Award winning John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The follow-up to her AM Gold album, Martin's Unbreakable Heart is a wicked blast of classic country played with reverence and playful fun. From Devil Came Down The Dancefloor to I Want You To Be A Real Man, Unbreakable heart is played with precision, heart and a lively wink. The album features Mitchell, Rufus Wainwright and Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters. A writer, a singer, a choreographer, and a dancer, Amber Martin is also a fabulous conversationalist. In Part 2 of our deep dive into the notorious Irish "Scissor Sisters" case, we explore the investigation into the brutal slaughter of 39-year-old Farah Swaleh Noor. Sisters Charlotte and Linda Mulhall bludgeoned, stabbed, and dismembered Noor's body in a crime so shocking that it continues to shock and disgust. How were these two sisters brought to justice? Moreover, how do their troubled pasts, marked by physical violence and substance abuse, influence our perception of the gruesome act they committed against a man known to be a sexual predator? Our exploration delves into the minds and motives behind these exceedingly violent actions, not to justify them, but to seek a deeper understanding of why the Scissor Sisters embarked on such a dark path. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode is graphic in nature and discusses topics of sexual assault and self-harm. The notorious "Scissor Sisters" case ranks among the most brutal and shocking in Irish history, leaving a dark mark on the true crime genre. Linda and Charlotte Mulhall, despite a troubled existence marred by alcohol and drug addiction and a history of abuse, had never shown signs of extreme violence or serious legal troubles. That changed dramatically when they gruesomely stabbed, bludgeoned, and cut the throat of their mother's boyfriend, dismembered his body in a bathroom, and discarded the remains in Dublin's Royal Canal. Adding to the horror, they retained his head with the intention of burying it separately, turning a savage murder into a macabre tale of calculated cruelty. In Part 1 of our two-part coverage of this outrageous case, we detail exactly what happened, how it happened, and cover some fascinating facts surrounding "homicidal mutilation."
