Hey missionary family! This podcast episode is #225 - Applying the Rule of Thirds. In this episode, I'm sharing something new I've been thinking about called the Rule of Thirds—and how it applies to missionary life, post-mission life, and really, all of our human experience. You've heard me talk before about the 50/50 rule—how life and missions are made up of both joy and struggle—but this time, I'm introducing a new way to see it: the top third, the bottom third, and the middle third. That middle third—the “meh,” in-between space—might not feel exciting, but it's actually where we build consistency, clarity, and growth. Whether you're serving a mission, preparing to go, or finding your rhythm after coming home, learning to value this neutral space can help you find balance, peace, and stability through life's roller coaster of highs and lows. I'll also explain how this idea came to me at a business conference, why it reminded me of photography composition and music triads, and how seeing life in thirds can bring more compassion, grounding, and gratitude to your missionary journey—and beyond. Linguistic research has its highs and lows: from staging a traditional wedding to learn about ceremonial words to having your efforts to found a village school disrupted by civil war. Linguistic research can also be about highs and lows: in this case, looking at how high and low tones in Babanki words affect their meaning. In this episode, your host Lauren Gawne gets enthusiastic about the highs and lows of fieldwork in Babanki with Dr. Pius Akumbu, who's a linguist from Babanki, Cameroon, and a Director of Research in African Linguistics at CNRS in the LLACAN Lab (the Languages and Cultures of Africa Lab) in Paris, France. We talk about Professor Akumbu's documentation work on a wide variety of topics from the relationship of Babanki to other Grassfields and Bantu languages, what happens when words have a mysterious extra tone that is only produced under the right circumstances (floating tones), to that time he staged a false wedding to document traditional wedding ceremonial language – and led to a real couple opting for a traditional-style wedding of their own. Welcome to episode 217 - Highs and Lows, in this episode we will talk about how life is full of ups and downs—and I'm learning more and more that both are not only inevitable, but necessary. In this episode, I share how I've been thinking about highs and lows lately, and why the “low tide” moments in our lives are not something to rush through or judge, but to actually honor and work with. I'll take you back to a trip my family and I took to Haystack Rock on the Oregon coast, and how seeing it at both high tide and low tide became a powerful metaphor for my own life (and maybe for yours too). I'll also talk about the natural emotional waves we experience—whether we're in the middle of a mission, adjusting to life after, or supporting someone we love—and how the ebb makes the flow possible. If you've been feeling like you're in a dip, this episode is your reminder that it's part of the process, it's part of the beauty, and it often brings its own treasures if we let it.
