Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: New Video: What to Eat in a Global Catastrophe, published by Christian Pearson on June 1, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We are excited to share our second video here at Insights for Impact, a YouTube channel that aims to communicate key insights from research that we think could have an especially high positive impact in the world. There are major threats to our food supply globally, both now and in future. The good news is, there are also plenty of viable food solutions. What are the most promising ways to feed the world cheaply, quickly and nutritiously? Our target audience is laypeople along with effective altruists who don't yet have much understanding of the given topic – either because they've never heard of it before, or if they don't have time to delve into long/technical papers! The idea is to facilitate knowledge gain and pique interest by communicating key insights from valuable research. We hope that some viewers will be interested enough to dig deeper or share the ideas, and this may ultimately spark positive change in the world. We also think our videos could be useful for organisations to share their work with potential donors and other stakeholders. Going forward, we are continuing to explore a range of EA-relevant cause areas in video form. We collaborate with researchers to ensure their work is accurately portrayed. If you are a researcher wanting to give your work a voice outside of the forum, please get in touch! Thanks for listening. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing Insights for Impact, published by Christian Pearson on January 4, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Hey all! Are you wanting to follow EA research, but finding papers and longform forum posts too dry? Late last year, Jenna Ong and I noticed a lack of research-focused EA video content and decided to do something about it. Today, we are excited to introduce Insights for Impact, a YouTube channel that's all about communicating the key insights of EA-aligned research papers. In our first video, How Science Misunderstands Power, we explore why well-meaning scientists failed to prevent nuclear proliferation in the 20th century. Perhaps by examining the history of nuclear weapon development, we may be able to better manage other powerful technologies, like AI and genetic engineering. A 2018 paper by Samo Burja and Zachary Lerangis, The Scientists, the Statesman, and the Bomb, served as the basis for this video. However, we also drew inspiration from HaydnBelfield's post, especially their idea that the current headspace of the AI Safety community closely resembles the “this is the most important thing” mindset of scientists throughout the mid 20th century. From these case studies, it seems that both social and technical factors are crucial in ensuring powerful technologies have a positive impact. In future videos, we want to explore a range of EA-relevant cause areas. We'd love to collaborate with researchers to ensure we accurately portray their work. So if you're a researcher who wants to give your work a voice outside of the forum, please get in touch! Thanks for listening. On this episode I chatted to musician Donovan Funk. Donovan creates alternative rock inspired by Kings of Leon, Jeff Buckley, Tom Petty, and Tor Miller; both in lyricism and musical expression. He started playing guitar at an early age, learning classic rock riffs that he heard while forming early memories with his dad. After his teen years he rediscovered his love for the instrument and began building songs based around what he could learn from the internet. Donovan Funk is currently working on an album in his home studio writing and recording original compositions to share with the world via streaming services and live performances. Using intuition and classical training from school orchestra, Donovan Funk is able to include a multitude of instrument to his productions such as bass, drums, keyboard, and cello. You can also find Donovan Funk performing at festivals, markets, and venues in Oklahoma City with a set that starts out mellow and builds to a screaming finale. Playing covers and originals with supporting members Christian Pearson on bass and his brother Conner Funk on drums. On this episode I sat down with musician and co-founder of OKSessions, Christian Pearson. Christian has had a passion for music his whole life, he grew up around it and so naturally he became good at it. Very good. He continued to play through high school and then in OU's The Pride of Oklahoma. After graduation Christian started working in Banking, a real world job that really didn't tick all the boxes for him. He found himself still playing regularly, practicing on his lunch hour and longing for OKC to have a solid music scene. Lightbulb moment, birth of OKSessions. "OkSessions is all about treating local music the way we treat local food. We believe each locale has it’s own unique artistic flavor, and we believe music is the voice of a culture.Cities that are present and engaged with their local artists influence the rest of the world and thrive economically. Live music is exceptional at merging ‘bubbles’ in a community and fostering integration in a city. It gets people together who wouldn’t normally hang out, and makes it easy to find common ground with people from different backgrounds.I want to walk out of my house and step into a city filled with music, whether it’s mine or someone else’s. OkSessions is a media hub that gets people excited about local music and makes it accessible to get into the scene. We regularly publish new articles about OKC’s live music renaissance. Follow us on social media and join our email lists if you believe what we believe about music."So with this mission Christian is changing OKC one night at a time. You can see him perform regularly around town, especially in the holiday season. Check out www.christianpearson.me and www.oksessions.com for more. Get out, get those feet tapping, bounce around a lose yourself in music. You deserve it. Follow Christian here @christian.pearson and @oksessions Follow us here @thisisoklahomaThanks for listening, Mike

Today we have Christian Pearson on the program. Christian is a cultural critic and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. And I wanted to have Christian on because I had this realization recently that in popular culture the data center is the new hidden fortress. Like in movies and on TV, there is often this plot point that someone needs to break into a data center to steal some file or something. And I wondered why. Like, why is it that data centers are a symbol of value the way that banks used to be the symbol of value. And that launches us off into some pretty weird territory regarding data centers and science fiction in general. We realized that like half of the Mission Impossible movies have some sort of a scene in a data center. But of course all of the data centers in these movies are heightened and look nothing like reality. Also, if you're worried that this won't have any technical discussion of data centers not to worry, we have an oddly long discussion of data center water filtration so stay tuned for that. Christian was a great guest and I'm excited to share this conversation we had. Our sponsor this week is Green Lane Design. Green Lane has been designing, engineering and building critial facilities for over ten years including major enterprise customers as well as colocation facilities.
