Congregationalists--clergy and congregations—were the driving force in New England's Revolution. Interpreting liberty through their own religious framework, which included principles of autonomy, fellowship, and consensus, Congregationalists had much to say about liberty in church records, letters, and sermon literature. Kyle Roberts, Executive Director of the Congregational Library and Archives, and Tricia Peone, Project Director for New England Hiddien Histories, join us to talk about their new on-line exhibit Religion of Liberty, and what we can learn from the Congregational Library about the beginnings of the American Revolution.https://www.congregationallibrary.org/https://www.congregationallibrary.org/events/open-house-2024Tell us what you think! Kyle Roberts is a DP working in Birmingham, Alabama. One of the important aspects of working in a smaller market is to be skilled enough to function in multiple roles depending on what each project demands. “I'm a big problem solver,” says Kyle. “I feel like my career has taken off mainly because I'm the guy that can not just do multiple jobs, but it's using my creative mind, doing the problem solving, that's taken me far. That's what still brings me to the job every day.” After working in LA at Radiant Images, Kyle relocated back home to Birmingham to work for a local ad agency. He began shooting corporate video and regional commercials. Though he loves shooting narratives, commercials in this market are what pays the bills. Fortunately, production in the area has grown enough to support more work. Alabama is a pretty good central location for Kyle to work in Atlanta, Nashville and New Orleans, so he's able to work as a local in any of those markets. He also finds and trains those who are eager to learn, so there's more experienced crew available and work can be shared. With his partners, Kyle opened Next Level Productions, a rental house, and Moonmen DJS, a production studio with an LED video wall. We’ve been created to glorify God, but it’s so hard to do because of the it’s-all-about-me that’s beating in our hearts! Dr. Joe Stowell joins us to talk about it. Joe is the Special Assistant to Dr. Mark Jobe, the President of Moody Bible Institute. Back in the day Joe served as President of Moody Bible and then Cornerstone University. He’s an international conference speaker, pastor, & author. And he’ll be one of the featured speakers at Founders Week! Joe also shares how life becomes so empty when we treasure anyone or anything but Jesus. And that it’s normal to wrestle with doubt. Next, we talk with Emmy award-winning director, Kyle Roberts who serves as the Founder of Reckless Abandonment Pictures—a company committed to radically family-friendly storytelling. He talks about his latest project What Rhymes With Reason. A tragedy ignites a group of teens on a quest to find a legendary landmark hidden in the wilderness. Together, they navigate the adventure while confronting the darkness within themselves. Kyle flips the script and starts by asking Perry and Shawna, “What do you think teens need most?” He also shares how mental illness is a topic close to his own heart—there was a time in Kyle’s life when he almost jumped off a bridge. When it comes to data, most people think they need much more than they do. Once that data is gathered, where is it stored? What does it do? How is it handled? Now that data monetization is becoming a much bigger conversation in most companies, all of these pieces are important to understand. Host Larry Kortkamp talks with Paola Saibene and Kyle Roberts from Teknion Data Solutions. The fuel for innovation is data. With a higher level of data now available to us, we need data governance and have no idea how to do it. We don't necessarily have the right to everything we are dealing in. We may start off collecting data for one reason, and later decide to change the purpose of that same data. When the rules change, it's time to reevaluate to be sure we're making ethical choices that could have unintended consequences. It's time to be asking better questions to be a better steward of the data we capture. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't rely too much on automated talent acquisition. Kyle Robertson, the entrepreneur who grew Cerebral Inc. into a $4.8 billion behemoth in online mental health and became a prominent face of the fast-growing industry has not only lost his job as CEO, but he's also being investigated by the Federal Government for his prescribing practices. Cerebral came in for heightened scrutiny after Bloomberg Businessweek reported in March that many of the nurse practitioners it employed said they feared the company was over-prescribing the addictive amphetamines used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Others raised concerns about the company's aggressive advertising on social-media platforms, including TikTok. In this episode of N&H special guest and TikTok star "That Psych NP" Laura joins us as we go down the Cerebral rabbit hole of corruption. We'll dissect why only nurses questioned whether the company was making ADHD medicines, such as Adderall, too easy to obtain and not the Medical Director and new CEO Dr. David Mou. Experts say such medication can be subject to abuse by those who don't have the disorder. We'll also discuss how Kyle Roberts raised funds for his startup, who are Cerebral's investors, various insurance companies who partnered with Cerebral, patient complaints, and the ethics involved with mental health startups. This week on the podcast, I'm speaking with Kyle Roberts. When I first saw the Instagram post by @thelogdriverswaltz regarding Kyle's finish of this awesome bikepacking route in Ontario, I reached out to him for a chat. But once I started digging into his background, I realized that there was so much more to this man.Kyle grew up in southern Ontario with adventure in his blood. As early as he can remember, his father would often take the family on epic canoe trips in Algonquin Park, portaging their canoes through the backcountry.Years later, after moving to Australia where he worked for the High Access Service company RopePro, Kyle started riding bikes. He soon participated in a couple of bikepacking events, the GTD 400 and the Victoria Divide 550, which started his path in adventure cycling. After living in Australia for 6 years, Kyle and his partner returned to Canada. Shortly after they arrived, Kyle tackled the Log Driver Waltz. Being away from Canada for so long, Kyle wanted to reacquaint himself with the Canadian wilderness and what better way than on an 800km bikepacking route? He completing the route in 74 hours, but this is only the beginning of his story. In 2017, after he and his brother Tom hiked through the Himalayas, and after observing the corruption and poverty in the area, they wanted to give back. They started the non profit, The Weight We Carry, an organization that wants to raise awareness to mental health. In their first project in 2019, they portaged their canoes up to Mount Everest Base Camp, paying homage to their childhood and bringing awareness to mental health. Kyle, Tom and their team raised $150,000 for KOSHISH Nepal, a Women's Mental Health Transit Centre in Kathmandu. At this centre, Nepalese women suffering from mental illness and other psychological issues receive Short-term Emergency Care and Professional Mental Health Support. They're just getting started. They're currently planning another such endeavour that will take place in the wilds of the Canadian Rockies. In this episode, Kyle share stories from his adventures and the meaning he and his team find in their projects. Maryland wasn't so merry for some Americans during the Revolutionary War, especially if you happened to side with the king. Professing fealty to the Crown, for whatever reason or motivation, cost many Maryland colonists their property, and sometimes their lives. But for other Maryland Loyalists, like enslaved people, loyalism was an opportunity to achieve a different kind of American independence, or to turn ideas about class and patriarchy on their heads. Last week we, began our two-part look at loyalism in the Chesapeake. We began in Virginia and the potential for a digital project now in its early stages to radically complicate our understanding of loyalty in the Old Dominion. On today's episode, we turn north and head to Maryland, to feast on crab cakes, and sink our teeth into The Maryland Loyalism Project. Created by Dr. Kyle Roberts of the American Philosophical Society and Dr. Benjamin Bankhurst of Shepherd University, the Maryland Loyalism Project is a digital archive that brings together the stories of Maryland women and men who remained loyal to the Crown during the American Revolution. More than just home to digitized copies of Loyalist Claims, the project is a research and teaching tool about the diversity of the Maryland Loyalist experience. And to help illustrate its potential, today you'll also hear from some of Roberts and Bankhurt's students about what they found digging in these records, and what they make of them. About Our Guests: Kyle Roberts, Ph.D., is Associate Director of Library & Museum Programming of the American Philosophical Society Library & Museum. He is co-director of the Maryland Loyalism Project. Benjamin Bankhurst, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of History at Shepherd University and co-director of the Maryland Loyalism Project.

Virginia was home to many of the most famous rebels like George Washington during the American Revolution, but it was also a den of Tories who remained loyal to the British king. Loyalists in all the colonies rejected what they called “the unnatural rebellion” and resisted Patriot forces as they tried to restore the king's peace to British America. In Virginia, a civil war raged between white colonists, enslaved people who sought their freedom, and many more who just tried to stay out of the way. And when the war ended, many Loyalists faced a desperate choice: abandon their homes and seek refuge in the empire, or melt back into American society and hope their neighbors remained ignorant of their political leanings. What can we learn by studying the disaffected in the American Revolution? What do we gain by looking at the Revolution not as a glorious cause, but as a civil war? On today's show, we begin a two-part look at Loyalism in the Chesapeake Bay region by talking with scholars who are working hard to reconstruct the Loyalist experience in Virginia and Maryland. Drs. Stephanie Seal Walters and Alexi Garrett join Jim Ambuske today to talk about Virginia Loyalists and their world, and their ambition to make documents submitted to the Loyalist Claims Commission by Virginians beginning in 1783 more accessible to the public. On our next episode, Drs. Ben Bankhurst and Kyle Roberts stop by to chat about their Maryland Loyalism Project, a digital archive they've created with help from their students to tell the stories of those who gloried in the name of Tory in the Revolutionary Era. Be sure to stay tuned for that conversation. About our Guests: Stephanie Seal Walters, Ph.D., is Digital Liaison to the Humanities at the University of Southern Mississippi. She is an Atlantic World historian studying loyalists and loyalism in Virginia and British North America in the Revolutionary Era. She also serve as the Assistant Editor for the Civil War and Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi Project. Alexi Garrett, Ph.D., is the 2020-2022 Institute of Thomas Paine Studies and University of Virginia Press Post-Doctoral Fellow at Iona College. She is an early American historian who researches how elite, unmarried white women (legally classified as feme soles) commercially related to the people they enslaved, and how they managed slave-manned enterprises in the American revolutionary and early national periods.

New Books for a New Nation: Jesuit Library Building in 19th-Century Chicago Exiled European-born Jesuits founded a network of Catholic colleges across the United States in the century following the restoration of the Society of Jesus in 1814. At the heart of these colleges were libraries. Dr Kyle Roberts will talk about a collaborative teaching and research project to reconstruct the library of one such school, St Ignatius College (precursor to Loyola University Chicago). Working at the intersection of library, urban, and religious history, Roberts will explore how these libraries reveal the centrality of print to nineteenth-century Catholicism and the transnational, hybrid identities of urban American Catholics, balancing allegiances to the state, homeland, and global Catholic Church. Kyle Roberts is the Associate Director of Library & Museum Programming of the American Philosophical Society Library & Museum. Prior to coming to the APS, Dr. Roberts was an Associate Professor of Public History and New Media and Director of the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities at Loyola University Chicago. A prize-winning scholar and educator of Atlantic World religion, print, and library history, he is the author or editor of several books, including Evangelical Gotham: Religion and the Making of New York City, 1783-1860 (Chicago, 2016), and digital humanities projects, including the Jesuit Libraries Provenance Project (2012-present). This chat originally aired at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021.

At first glance, evangelical and Gotham seem like an odd pair. What does a movement of pious converts and reformers have to do with a city notoriously full of temptation and sin? More than you might think, says Kyle B. Roberts, who argues that religion must be considered alongside immigration, commerce, and real estate scarcity as one of the forces that shaped the New York City we know today. In Evangelical Gotham, Roberts explores the role of the urban evangelical community in the development of New York between the American Revolution and the Civil War. As developers prepared to open new neighborhoods uptown, evangelicals stood ready to build meetinghouses. As the city's financial center emerged and solidified, evangelicals capitalized on the resultant wealth, technology, and resources to expand their missionary and benevolent causes. When they began to feel that the city's morals had degenerated, evangelicals turned to temperance, Sunday school, prayer meetings, antislavery causes, and urban missions to reform their neighbors. The result of these efforts was Evangelical Gotham—a complicated and contradictory world whose influence spread far beyond the shores of Manhattan.-Kyle Roberts is the Associate Director of Library & Museum Programming of the American Philosophical Society Library & Museum. Dr. Roberts helps to integrate the programming departments of the Library, which manage scholarly programming and digital outreach, with those of the Museum, which oversee education programming and adult learning. Prior to coming to the APS Library & Museum, Dr. Roberts was an Associate Professor of Public History and New Media and Director of the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities at Loyola University Chicago. A scholar of Atlantic World religion, print, and library history, he is the author of Evangelical Gotham: Religion and the Making of New York City, 1783-1860 (Chicago, 2016) and the co-editor, with Stephen Schloesser, of Crossings and Dwellings: Restored Jesuits, Women Religious, American Experience 1814-2014 (Brill, 2017) and, with Mark Towsey, of Before the Public Library: Reading, Community, and Identity in the Atlantic World, 1650-1850 (Brill, 2017).

Welcome GoodTrashers to this special edition of the Genrecast where we sit down and talk with the filmmakers behind the locally produced Oklahoma short, The Heroes of the Realm before it heads to next week's 2016 San Diego Comic-con! Heroes of the Realm is a short film featuring a pizza delivery who accidentally opens a portal that brings arcade games andan evil sorcerer who hopes to rule the world to life. The synopsis reads: In a world where magic reigns, one tyrant was the undisputed ruler. But when magic opens a portal to our world, it's up to a pizza delivery woman to make the most important delivery of her life. We're joined today by the short film's star Stephen Goodman and director Kyle Roberts to bring us the inside scoop behind the film's production along with their hopes and excitement about taking Heroes of the Realm the mecca of nerd culture, San Diego Comic-con.
deadCenter 2016 has an admirable line-up of feature films this year, but the real fun and experimentation is happening in the shorts. The festival has no less than 10 different Short Film categories which means if you're in attendance and you have caught at least one shorts program, you're doing it wrong. We caught up with a few of the short filmmakers and talked to them a bit about their films. One of the biggest categories this year was the Okie Shorts which included 8 short films from across the genre spectrum. Character drama, sci-i, documentary, it was all covered. Each of these shorts have close Oklahoma ties or were produced locally in Oklahoma. Caleb caught up with Lance McDaniel and Kyle Roberts following their debut screening. One of the more unique of the shorts was Swirl by Lance McDaniel which was essentially a 8 or so minute interpretive dance about the growing bond of two teen boys who fall in love and fight against persecution. More in our wheelhouse here at GoodTrash was Heroes of the Realm directed by Kyle Roberts. The film features a pizza delivery girl who masters and arcade game and acquires a magical bracelet that brings the game's characters to life. It's a really fun mesh of 80s nostalgia, comic books, and even a few hints of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Episode 27 - iPhone 4 Music Videos - on the Digital Convergence Podcast by 16x9 Cinema with host Carl Olson - a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Sponsored by Kessler Crane. Featuring: iPhone 4 Music Video filmakers Kyle Roberts (Dr. Pants' Sarsaparilla Girl) and Marty Martin (Steve Failows' FLAKJAKT Cascade). Kyle Roberts, whose day job is working with pro broadcast video, talks to us about how he stood in line for the iPhone 4 as soon as it was available and decided to attempt to make on of the first music videos made on an iPhone 4. He connected with Dr. Pants and filmed the video for their song - Sarsaparilla Girl - at Pops (one of the largest root beer stores in the USA) along Route 66. Kyle's video received mentions on NPR and in USA Today. Kyle talks about his stop-motion filmaking with a Canon 7D camera and Dragon Stop-Motion software. Marty Martin, who is an independent filmaker, photographer, and visual effects artist, also attempted to be one of the first to produce an iPhone 4 music video. He teamed up with songwriter and musician Steve Failows of FLAKJAKT. Steve wrote the song Cascades specifically for Marty's iPhone 4 music video. Filmed in a number of locations, Marty talks about the challenges he faced in working with the limitations of the iPhone 4. An interesting side-point: both interviews were conducted on the very iPhone 4s used to create the music videos :)
