Part 1:We talk with Will Rice, Communications Consultant with Americans for Tax Fairness. We discuss how corporations avoid paying their fair share of the tax burden. The Trump tax cuts even cut their taxes (and those of their rich shareholders) even further. The top 5 executives of large corporations are paid more than the corporation pays pay in taxes, for example. We discuss some of the voidance schemes, including stock buybacks, and gaming the stock market by executives.Part 2:We speak with Lynn Parramore about Big Pharma's ongoing drug cost scams and rapacity. Pharmaceutical companies often claim that drug costs are high because of the cost of research. This is not true. Most of the profits are distributed as shareholder dividends, executive compensation, and for marketing. The drug companies are price gouging. A serious discussion of the consequences: high prices in US, and lower, controlled prices in the rest of the world. WNHNFM.ORG production
Hello to you listening in Tamuning, Guam!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for the story) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Charley Darkey Parkhurst was about 40 years old when hired on in the 1850s gold rush as a six-in hand stage coach driver with Wells Fargo & Co. working some of the most treacherous routes in Northern California. These rugged teamsters held rein over six wild-eyed horses as they tore along precipitous mountain trails. Charley was one of a breed of skilled and fearless stage coach drivers who pushed themselves and their horses to the limit. For 15 years Charley battled outlaws, fought, drank, smoked, and gambled with the best of them.Charley's death from cancer in 1879 revealed the disguise: Charley was born Charlotte Parkhurst in New Hampshire, escaped from an orphanage at age 15, and seeing that the world of work was better for men adopted the role. Charley was an expert horseman, lumberjack, and voted in a Presidential election dressed as a man some 52 years before women were given the right to vote. “The only people who have occasion to be disturbed by the career of Charley Parkhurst are the gentlemen who have so much to say about ‘woman's sphere' and ‘the weaker vessel,' ” The Providence, R.I. Journal wrote. “It is beyond question that one of the soberest, pleasantest, most expert drivers in this State, and one of the most celebrated of the world-famed California drivers was a woman. And is it not true that a woman had done what women can do?”Story Prompt: What have you said when people told you, “You can't because you're a girl”? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! A vibrant and engaged media is essential to protecting American liberty—which is why the First Amendment provides such a strong protection for freedom of the press. If the media are to carry out their societal responsibilities, journalists must have the trust of news consumers. But these days, trust is in low supply. An October 2022 Gallup Poll found that only 34% of Americans trust the mass media to report the news “fully, accurately and fairly.” Why are the media experiencing this profound crisis of trust and what can be done about it? Wesley's guest on this episode of Humanize has some valuable insights. Alice Stewart has worked on both sides of the microphone, both as a source for reporters and a journalist in her own right. She was Communications Director for the presidential campaigns of Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Rick Santorum, and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. Stewart has also served in government as the Arkansas Deputy Secretary of State. Stewart worked as an Anchor/Reporter in Little Rock, Arkansas and Savannah, Georgia, and also hosted “The Alice Stewart Show,” a talk radio program that featured national and local political leaders. The goal of the show was to engage in civil discussions about politics and agree to disagree in a respectful manner—a continuing professional passion for Stewart. She is currently a CNN Political Commentator, Communications Consultant, and is a resident Fellow at Harvard University, Kennedy Institute of Politics. In this podcast episode, Jim James interviews Ed West, the head of Fox-West, a communications consulting firm, who helps large corporations communicate and persuade. Ed shares tips on how to prepare for investor presentations, reduce the use of jargon, and simplify the message. He suggests using the simple message house tool and the "James Bond Start" to grab the audience's attention. Ed also advises to use analogies and stories to bring statistics to life and avoid overly intricate slides. To make the message accessible, he recommends using the Flesch-Kincaid test to assess sentence and word length and to present informally, like having a conversation with a friend in a pub. Finally, Ed emphasises the need to be yourself and show your personality without making it all about yourself.Listen NotesSearch the whole Internet's podcasts with the best podcast search engineThe UnNoticed Entrepreneur BookThe UnNoticed Entrepreneur: Fifty Ideas for your Company to Stand OutThe Marque of an EntrepreneurGet noticed as an entrepreneur with the 19 Dots range of merchandise; bottles, cups, caps et alSocial listening - google alert killer!Generate leads and market your product using social listeningPost-production, transcript and show notes by XCD Virtual Assistant. Putin expected Ukraine to roll over in days when he launched the full-scale war in February 2022. But this was a tragic misreading of the Ukraine people and their relationship with their leaders and system of government – which they were prepared to fight for and lay down their lives for. Instead of a small victorious war, Putin has become entangles in a quagmire that has now claimed more Russian lives than 10 years of war in Afghanistan. That war helped to accelerate the collapse of the Soviet Union – so what awaits Russia now it is in a much less stable situation under sanctions and potential defeat. ---------- SPEAKER: Konstantin von Eggert MBE is a freelance journalist, commentator, and communications consultant. Hello to you listening in Chanhassen, Minnesota!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for you) for Wednesdays on Whidbey with your host, Diane Wyzga.I heard the podcast guest say: I'm a yoga instructor; not a techie type. I teach in person. I don't know how to - nor do I want to - create an online yoga course. I just didn't want to work that hard. That's me! I shine in person-to-person settings. The sorcery of stories comes alive when people are face-to-face, collaborating in a physical space. I just couldn't see how to translate that collective magic to the Zoom Room screen. And then I heard the podcast guest say: I learned that I was standing in my own way. COVID would be here for a long while. After that we can expect a new way of being in the world. I figured I better figure out the online process or get left behind.I knew she was talking to me. I was standing in my own way - I had to step aside or get left behind. I'm not a tech person but heck! I'm an incest survivor. I walked across Spain. I figured out what to do after my ex's affair and then walking away to his next wife. What's a little online course or three! Bring it on! I can learn to do this for you.Meanwhile, when you hear someone say something you know you need to hear, pay attention! This is the power of sharing your story - with your vulnerability. I'm not perfect. I don't have all the answers; but I do know how to help you find the words you didn't know you had to get to the heart of your message and the message of your heart so you can create the change, dent, shift, impact, or ruckus you want to see and be.CTA: Email me at Quarter Moon Story Arts or message me on LinkedIn to set up a free 20 minute chat to explore working together. Hello to you listening in Pamplona, Spain!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I was asked the other day what do I do when I'm stuck? When the client work isn't as robust as I'd like? When the podcast episodes don't seem to flow from a place of creativity but feel bogged down in muck. You know what I mean. We've all been there. I have an idea to share and I bet you have some, too. Research has shown that movement, not language, is the foundation of thought. [Mind in Motion: How Action Shapes Thought by Barbara Taversky] Action shapes thought. There's a lot of neuroscience I don't understand about how it works; but I can say this: while I don't know how it works I do know that it works. Motion is the lotion for our thoughts. Maybe we're a species of movers and shakers first. Think about it! We were cave drawing before we began talking in words. When you get to that place where you feel stuck in the mucky middle of a project, idea, book chapter, whatever. Get up and move. Draw your stuckness. Stick figures are fine. Symbols are great. It's not about the art; it's about the motion that creates the thought you want to have. Try big sidewalk chalks on a concrete driveway or magic markers on a big easel pad. I like the big Post It easel pads. I can draw on a page, rip it off the pad, stick it to the wall and after I have a few I step back to look at the problem. The answer is often staring me right in the face.Question: What also works for you when you are stuck in the mucky middle? You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
