Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Drones reported in Bayonne, New Jersey! No —actually it's our episode celebrating Stephen Spielberg's epic Sci-Fi thriller based on H. G. Wells novel. This classic earned notoriety from the now famous production of the radio play by Orsen Welles Mercury Theater, which was so convincing that some listeners really believed Martians had landed in Grover's Mill, NJ. In 1953, Paramount would release a full cinematic treatment with some of the most impressive visual effects at the time, and we're rewarded with an Oscar for their efforts. Spielberg's installment is updated and brilliantly paced, and the visual effects are (we think) some of best in an era dominated by digital “gloss”. Tom Cruise turns in one of his best performances, and a young Dakota Fanning makes another entry as a child actor into what has been a long and successful transition to present day. This film is a gripping and fun ride. And we thank Tim Robbins for totally creeping us out in the role of Harlan Olgivy. That's when you not only see a UFO, but you also see the extraterrestrials. The fourth kind of encounter is when you are abducted. A close encounter of the fifth kind is when you communicate with the alien – either verbally or telepathically. But then there is a close encounter of the sixth kind – the kind of encounter not even die-hard Ufologists and lovers of anything extraterrestrial want to experience… because nobody comes back from it alive. (Close Encounters of the Sixth Kind) *** In 1908, Charles Luard found his wife Caroline shot dead at a neighbor's country house. But who killed her? (The Seal Chart Murder) *** Madame Delphine LaLaurie, made popular by Kathy Bates in TV's “American Horror Story: Coven” was a first class monster. A figure of high society, she was well known for her mistreatment of slaves. But no one knew just how sick she truly was. So much so that even after leaving the mansion and it burning down, there are still terrors taking place there, thanks to Madame Delphine LaLaurie, the Monster of Royal Street. But one particular type photo being shared via email – a photo of a smiling dog – would never be described as cute, as it drives some people literally insane. Is it real, or just another cyber-located urban legend? (Smile.Dog) *** Being kidnapped by gypsies is a somewhat negative stereotype towards those who truly live the lifestyle. They don't typically go out of their way to snatch people away… but in one particular circumstance it truly did happen – and it created an incredibly strange tale. (Kidnapped By Gypsies) *** Albert Coe's story sounds more like a Stephen Spielberg film as opposed to a true story. On the afternoon of February 9, 1958, a complaint was called into Long Island's seventh police precinct regarding a series of “strange occurrences” taking place in the caller's home. According to the caller, Lucille Herrmann, for nearly a week the caps and lids of bottles in the basement had been popping off inexplicably, while other bottles and containers were tipping over and spilling their contents for no obvious reason. Elsewhere in the house, items were flying off shelves without the aid of human hands, and toys were breaking without explanation. Not only were the disturbances destructive to the Herrmann's home and property, but they were also psychologically upsetting, since they seemed to be happening on their own.Lucille Herrmann's call to the Seaford Police Department kicked off a two-month-long fascination with what many came to believe was genuine poltergeist activity in the Herrmann's Long Island, NY home. What began as a simple call to the police for assistance quickly escalated into near daily media coverage and interest from a variety of paranormal investigators and skeptics, all determined to identify and explain the cause of the ostensibly supernatural occurrences in what became known as “the house of flying objects.”The Herrmann's case of poltergeist activity is considered by many to be the first modern investigation into poltergeist disturbances and would serve as the inspiration for Stephen Spielberg's 1982 horror film, Poltergeist. Despite the considerable attention, however, the case remains unexplained to this day.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAllen, Tom. 1958. 2 Guys And A Chainsaw

Stephen Spielberg called this his favorite Jaws knock-off, and we can see why. It's just cheesy fun from beginning to end, with great underwater photography and terrible, horrible mutant piranhas on the attack.

The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

Escaping Your Past  My mind is constantly searching for a simple process for anything that will help me get what I want, and that usually comes down to something I talk about a lot: making a decision.  I speak about decision-making much of my day because it's the most dynamic tool in your personal growth tool kit.  It should be easy — Almost everything you will ever want to do in life has already been done. The solution to getting what you wish to should be based on logic and proven steps. In other words, figure out what works and do it. But, as much as we can all agree that it should be easy, using logic to get what we want doesn't have much to do with being a human—that's where emotions and a more psychological approach come into play. “Come on, let's just do what we know works?” You say. “No. I'm not feeling it. Let's go with the flow and figure it out?” Logical vs emotional thinking is an epic battle that Stephen Spielberg could tell in a blockbuster movie. Oh, wait, it always is! Let's take a side trip to the movies and prove my point. The Hero has a problem in a movie, and something has to change, but they don't know what to do. Professionally speaking, they are an emotional mess, no matter how real it may be. Then, in a movie, their situation suddenly thrust them into taking action to solve their problem. Logic kicks in, and they get busy fixing life. But, in a movie, life gets in the way, their actions are not working, and their emotions take over. It seems that all is lost, but never fear. Before any good movie ends, our Hero figures out precisely what needs to be done. One. Two. Three. Victory is at hand. Somebody, please roll the credits. What's the lesson in the story we are writing? Everything that you want to do has already been figured out. Your job is to set your emotions aside, go into logical mode, and take the fewest steps possible to reach your dream. They're no need to wait. Hero's, don't wait. Learn more about your ad choices. Does It Fly?
The Most Infamous Scene in the Indiana Jones Movies Explained

Does It Fly?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2024 53:02

You know the scene. A grisly human sacrifice. A terrified archaeologist looking on in horror from the shadows. A poor religious fanatic has his still-beating heart torn from his chest by a high priest before bursting into flames. While this seems like the kind of scene that would have been perfectly at home in a John Carpenter movie in the 1980s, instead it comes from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the second entry in the franchise (albeit a prequel to 1980's Raiders of the Lost Ark), and one which takes a decidedly darker tone than the relatively family-friendly adventure of the previous film. That moment is alleged to have given birth to the PG-13 movie rating, for one thing. But it also kickstarted a small but specific subset of pop culture fascination: the concept that someone's heart could be manually removed from their chest with no tools, using only the skills (sometimes mystical in nature) of an adversary. Fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise take note: long before Kano was rippin' hearts out, Mola Ram was doing it…and with better fashion sense, to boot! And while it SEEMS like the realm of pure (if icky) fantasy, it's still worth breaking down whether any element of this gruesome little party trick has basis in scientific reality. And if that doesn't quicken your pulse (sorry), we've got behind the scenes tidbits on what made it all look so good, how this singular moment helped force the MPAA to institute PG-13, and more! Now, time for a little heart-to-heart with Tamara and Hakeem…SUGGESTED VIEWINGWhile Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is indeed the second Indiana Jones movie, it's actually a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. That being said, we always endorse watching big franchises in release order rather than timeline order, because prequels tend to get a little self-referential. Watch Raiders first, then Temple of Doom, then the third film (which takes place after Raiders), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. These are the only Indiana Jones movies!OK, not really. There are also fourth and fifth films, the generally maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the somewhat better Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (the only film in the franchise not directed by Stephen Spielberg). Your mileage may vary, but if nothing else, Raiders of the Lost Ark is generally considered one of the greatest action/adventure movies of all time! And for those of you who can sanction Jim Carrey's buffoonery (sorry, a little Tommy Lee Jones humor there), Hakeem recommends an alternate take on the heart-ripping concept, as seen in Dumb and Dumber.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations! Ancient Heart Extraction Rituals“You have to appease those gods, so what better way than with human sacrifice! Don't have a volcano handy? Take out their heart.”(Hakeem references a scientific paper about heart extraction in Mesoamerica. We generally try not to link to things that aren't readily and easily available to read, but in this case, the above abstract and this excerpt are the best we could do. But it's so cool, we couldn't pass it up.)Consciousness and Organ Function While Hakeem throws cold water (or hot flames) on the idea that the heart itself can continue beating with no additional equipment after separation from the body, he briefly references the extremely grisly speculation that guillotine victims remained conscious after their heads were separated from their bodies. There's further study on that, but we try not to think about it.See also: Neuromuscular JunctionThuggees“While the Thuggee cult that they drew from was a real thing, they were robbers, they did murder folks, and they did all of this to serve Kali and did it in the name of this particular god, they did not take part in human sacrifice.”The PG-13 Rating“At the time this movie came out, it was rated PG…and there were a lot of parents who were taking their kids to see this…and then there's this heart being ripped out of a chest, which terrified kids!”See also: The MPAA website that Tamara references which confirms the Temple of Doom connection can be found here.We also cannot recommend highly enough J.W. Rinzler's incredible The Complete Making of Indiana Jones: The Story Behind All Four Films.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Ever wonder what makes the DeLorean in Back to the Future go? So did we! IN THIS EPISODE: Pennhurst Asylum was shuttered in 1987 – but that doesn't mean there aren't any souls still living there. (The Living Dead Asylum) *** We all love cute pet photos – so often those photos almost make our furry friends look human – even smiling in some cases. But Coe insists it really did happen – that he saved the life of an extraterrestrial – and it resulted in them becoming lifelong friends. We're all familiar with, thanks to Stephen Spielberg, the concept of a close encounter of the third kind. What should have been an easy blockbuster hit has turned into one of the saddest box office cases of 2023. "The Color Purple" made $18.1 Million on its Christmas Day opening, but it's projected to lose between $80 million and $100 million, and to make matters worse the industry isn't taking the "Oscar bait." What happened? Why did a movie with a seal of approval from Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey tank so quickly? Hopefully, this is a lesson learned for big studios: Stop spending four-quadrant money on one-quadrant movies.Trailer: https://youtu.be/wPwzBUui1GA?si=yVAdRDZk9P-LKgmaFollow Me On:TikTok @thisissavvyInstagram @alrightletstalkaboutitTwitter @thisissavvy1Criticless https://bit.ly/45D7kGQAdvertisement/Business Inquiries: contactsavannahme@gmail.comSUPPORT THIS PODCASTSubscribe To My Substack: https://thisissavvy.substack.com/Venmo/CashApp/Paypal: thisissavvyRequest a Custom Video from Me: https://link.shoutout.fans/SavannahEdwardsSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/sellout.

Heros, don't wait. Learn more about your ad choices.
