Episode 30 - SPOILER Review: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)Audio recorded on September 25, 2023Strikes updates: 1) There is a tentative deal in place for the full WGA union to vote on! Starting on Wednesday September 27th, the WGA can resume work. Ratification of the new 3 year deal is expected to happen very soon. 2) As of September 25th, we are almost 2.5 months (73 days) into the ongoing strike between SAG-AFTRA (acting union) and the AMPTP (body representing the studios)Here we go! This is the movie for 2023 that I was waiting for. I was so amped and ready for this movie by the time it was released. It did not disappoint. Today's episode is a spoiler review episode for the summer blockbuster “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One”. Ethan Hunt and the IMF are back for this latest chapter.I have said it before and I will say it again, Director Christopher McQuarrie is the reason why I get so excited for the Mission Impossible movies. He has been actively involved going back to the 4th movie, “Ghost Protocol”. McQuarrie and Cruise make a fantastic creative team. This 7th installment of the franchise has a ridiculous (in a good way) cast - Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell (awesome addition), Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales (Ozark), Cary Elwes, Henry Czerny (Kittridge is back!) - I mean come on! Amazing cast. In typical mission fashion there are amazing stunts, fantastic locations and another thrill-delivering soundtrack by returning Composer Lorne Balfe. The movie is a ride and engages you by making you care with a pretty good emotional story too like with the 6th movie, “Fallout”.“Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One” is available for digital purchase (and hopefully to rent too) on October 10th. In the podcast episode I mentioned to skip renting and just move on to buying it (Paramount is not paying me). That's how enthusiastic I am for this movie.Enjoy the movie and thanks for listening. Actors, writers, directors and producers all have key roles in production - but one of the most important aspects in a film is the musical score - a score can literally make or break a film. Composer Lorne Balfe joins the Movies In Focus podcast about his work on the hugely acclaimed and massively successful Tom Cruise blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. Balfe worked on the film's music alongside the masterful Hans Zimmer and the legendary Harold Faltermeyer. Balfe started his career as Zimmer's assistant and over the last decade has become one of the most influential composers working in the film industry - delivering a variety of memorable scores in films such as Michael Bay's 13 Hours, 6 Underground and Ambulance, Marvel's Black Widow and many others He has also become an important composer when it comes to taking established film franchises and breathing new life into iconic scores like Balfe did with Terminator Genysis, Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Bad Boys For Life. It was his work with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible and Jerry Bruckheimer on Bad Boys which made him the perfect candidate to create new music - and update old themes - for Top Gun: Maverick. Lorne Balfe talks about the film scoring process and what it was like composing music for the follow-up to one of the most iconic soundtracks of the 1980s.

Composer Lorne Balfe has proven his versatility and talent as a storyteller by delivering amazing scores across all genres and all mediums of visual storytelling. He has delivered the goods in family animation, moving dramas, thrilling horror, engaging biopics, inspiring documentaries, captivating television series, quirky comedies, addictive video games and much more. For his most recent film, Lorne joins the legacy that is the Mission: Impossible series. Lorne follows in the footsteps of some amazing composers to add his own signature stamp to the franchise. Lorne is one of our favorite guests, and it was a pleasure to catch up with him to dissect his biggest and most ambitious score to date in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. We discuss some topics such as confidence and doubt when it comes to being a composer, working with directors, what Lorne learned from his time as an additional composer, and how he handles criticism from people online especially on a big film like Mission: Impossible - Fallout. The majority our interview focuses on Mission: Impossible, including how this film needed a different scoring approach and how he approached utilizing that iconic Lalo Schifrin theme. You'll hear how Lorne structured certain action scenes, including knowing what scenes in the film didn't require score. Lorne shares how director Christopher McQuarrie doesn't use a temp track, and instead utilized an hour's worth of musical ideas that Lorne wrote away from picture to start editing to, and that made sure that music was baked into the DNA of this brilliant exercise in action filmmaking. We wrap up taking a look at Lorne's score for Genius: Picasso and how the score evolved from season 1, which focused on Albert Einstein. Lorne has proven himself as one of the most versatile and talented composers working today, and it's always a pleasure to catchup and pick his brain. Before the holidays I got to talk to Lorne Balfe once again about his recent duo of video game scores. Recently Lorne joined Jesper Kyd to co-score Assassin's Creed: Revelations and he also scored Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure with a main theme from Hans Zimmer. This time around we discuss the video game world and how Lorne who previously had never been a gamer has found a new niche that he's fallen in love with. We also discuss his work on Sherlock Holmers: A Game Of Shadows where he did additional music with Hans and was also the score producer. We go on discussing what the role of a "score producer" is and a few other interesting tidbits including a documentary he composed for the BBC. It was a great honor to chat with Lorne once again. If you haven't heard my first interview with him I highly suggest it as well. Lorne is a fun, lively and animated personality who has accomplished a lot this past year working on some extremely big projects.

It should come as no surprise that a movie that explores the loneliness that Batman must feel in the bat-cave after leaving his adoring public behind — even one involving LEGOs — has a fairly dark orchestral score thanks to composer Lorne Balfe, who argues that The LEGO Batman Movie has just as much emotional depth as any live-action Dark Knight tale. Balfe, who was part of the musical department for The Dark Knight series of films, shared some of his thoughts on writing for this animated incarnation of the hero’s story. Composer Lorne Balfe [TERMINATOR GENISYS, CHURCHILL, THE STORY OF GOD WITH MORGAN FREEMAN] is a Grammy Award-winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated film composer from Inverness, Scotland. His filmography boasts an incredible breadth and depth of titles, ranging from major studio to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.
