This is why we are releasing this album with no singles or promo tracks.” That said, we’ll introduce you to a track that gives heavy feels for its sinister-yet-cinematic hook, a touch of classic Nirvana and prog-rock, and durability as “Denim.”

In a Film Scorer first, a composer-director team joins the show! Composer Suvi-Eeva Äikäs & director Ben Steiner recently worked together on Ben's film Matriarch (which Ben directed and which Suvi scored). As such, we primarily talk about Suvi's score for Matriarch from both the director and composer perspectives (and with them each touching on sound design as well, particularly regarding the score edging into sound design and the sound design edging into score). Along the way, we touch on some big questions, like the role of film music, collaborating (and how to push back), and plenty more. Suvi and Ben actually connected in Bristol, England through a mutual friend, Ben Salisbury (Annihilation, Ex Machina). Suvi has also worked with Ben Salisbury and his longtime composing partner Geoff Barrow on several projects, including Devs and Men. You can find out more about Suvi on her website or about Ben on his website. Suvi's score is out on all major platforms, and Matriarch is currently on Hulu.

Dummy was a darker, stranger record that would become a trip-hop classic that paired hip-hop, jazz, and electronic textures with Beth Gibbons spine-tingling voice and twangy tremolo guitars that belong in spy movies. The winner of the 1995 Mercury Music Prize, Dummy features the singles ‘Sour Times', ‘Glory Box', and ‘Numb', and is notable for it soulful turntable-sampling, melancholic film noir atmosphere. A modern classic indeed. We delve deep into how the band met, what trip-hop and the Bristol sound was, how the band got their name, how Dummy became hugely popular and a bit of a dinner-party LP ripe for sexy background music in film and more. The hosts of the Nialler9 Podcast (Niall Byrne and Andrea Cleary) present the Listen Closely series of listening parties on the Big Romance's warm Toby Hatchett soundsystem, featuring a focus modern classic album and a chat around it on the last Wednesday of the month. The Portishead - Dummy Listening Party happens Wednesday March 27th at The Big Romance. Thanks to Georgia Hallion for editing the podcast.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord communityListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistKEXP 25 year anniversary interview in 2019Dummy SamplesPitchfork's review by By Philip Sherburne Hosted on Acast. It's safe to say that the world of film music, especially modern film music, owes a lot to Portishead's Geoff Barrow. In a large way, that's due to the instrumentalist and musician's founding of indie label Invada Records in 2001, which placed an early focus on hip hop and experimental acts before pinning down a unique emphasis on releasing film scores. But he's a prolific film and TV composer in his own right, as he paired with composer Ben Salisbury in the early 2010s for an abortive score to the 2012 film Dredd, which they later released as DROKK. From there, they sailed into an easy partnership with filmmaker Alex Garland, for whom they've scored all of his works since, from Ex Machina to Annihilation to Devs -- sneaky, unsettling scores that use found sounds and minimal instrumentation to convey the alienness of Garland's worlds.   It's an approach that works nicely for one of Netflix's newest shows (now a one-season wonder thanks to the recent news of its abrupt cancellation), the supernatural head-scratcher Archive 81, about an archivist (Mamoudou Athie) tasked with restoring a cache of mysterious documentary footage from a burned-down New York apartment building known as the Visser. From there, he finds himself lured into the viewpoint of deceased filmmaker Melody (Dina Shihabi) and the secrets she unearthed during her investigation. Timelines merge, prophecies are unraveled, and the true nature of the Visser's fate comes into sharp relief.   For the podcast, Ben and Geoff were kind enough to talk to me about the origins of their years-long partnership, Geoff's work with Invada Records, and the painstaking but rewarding process for carving out the analog atmosphere of Archive 81.   You can find Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow at their official websites.   Archive 81 is currently streaming on Netflix. You can also listen to the score for Archive 81 on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Invada Records and Lakeshore Records.

Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/

How I Make Music
#069 The Fugue from ‘The Big Loop’ by Daniel Birch

How I Make Music

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2020 17:54

The piece of music featured in this episode is called The Fugue. It’s an atmospheric piece which I wrote for the sci fi season finale of the audio drama The Big Loop, which follows a ship’s peace officer sent to investigate strange visions haunting the crew. This week we’ll look at some of the insights into why and how it was made. My name is Daniel Birch. I'm a composer from Somerset in England, and this is How I Make Music. IN THIS EPISODE 01:59 For this episode of The Big Loop show creator Paul Bae wanted a mix of ambient drones and haunting sci fi horror themes. 02:33 Influences include the score for Ex Machina by Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow. I’d heard they used a plugin called PaulStretch, which influenced me to create ambient tones of The Fugue. I retained certain childlike qualities using an instrument called a celesta. Clint Mansell’s score for Moon is another influence, and uses sparse instrumentation to create a powerful score. 04:43 Show creator Paul Bae sent an email requesting [quote] “Something beautiful, ambient, reflecting the vastness of space and human sacrifice. I want to bring the listeners to tears with this one." I only had a few weeks, but I find having a short deadline really helps. 05:09 I subscribe to the YouTube channel of Christian Henson, the co-owner of Spitfire Audio. I was inspired by his use of various pedals to resample and manipulate audio, turning them into sampled instruments. I thought “I could do that!” 05:21 I ran some of the sounds through my pedals. I ran my Arturia Microbrute through the AMA’s AC Noises pedal, which is a spring reverb with a bitcrusher and oscillator. By the end of it, I had a totally new skill. 06:37 I am also a vocalist. I included vocals into the compositions by singing along without a clear melodic line, just capturing my emotional response to the story. It’s definitely an organic sound, with some granular digital static. 08:09 During the intro to the track, you hear a combination of a patch called the ‘unstabler pad’ with the celeste and vocals to create a nice mellow bed. 09:16 There’s a heartbeat-style sound which plays throughout parts of the track. The sounds are a sampled instrument called Native Instruments’ “The Grand”. It sounds like the side of the piano is being tapped, drenched in reverb. I wanted this to symbolize the humanity of the lead character. 10:23 The synth lead was a mangled, distorted version of a simple saw lead. It's a very special episode for score lovers this week, as Edith is joined by Geoff Barrow and Redg Weeks from Invada Records. With its impeccable roster of composers, Invada's back catalogue has featured more times on our podcast than we can count. Among the artists they've worked with who we've spoken to - Cliff Martinez, Mica Levi, Blanck Mass, Warren Ellis and, of course, Clint Mansell. They've also been incredibly supportive of what we do, so it really was a treat chatting with them both remotely. In addition to his celebrated band work, Geoff collaborates with another former guest on this show, Ben Salisbury, on film and TV scores. And he's teamed up with Ben and Bristol outfit The Insects for his most recent project, Alex Garland's mind-bending tech-noir series, Devs. As always, there's plenty of music to enjoy.

18 years after he brought us the lo-fi superhero thriller Unbreakable - and a mere 3 since the surprise sequel Split - M Night Shyamalan finally completes his so-called Eastrail 177 trilogy with Glass. All the key players from the pervious films return, led by Bruce Willis's blue collar vigilante and Samuel L Jackson and James McEvoy's super-villains. Much of the action takes place in the mental institution where the trio are incarcerated and probed by Sarah Paulson's sceptical psychiatrist.  Glass is scored by West Dylan Thordson, who also provided the music for Split. It's an edgy, minimalist affair - with the ambient gloom and agitated strings reminiscent of Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's incredible work on Alex Garland's Annihilation (see episode 85!)  And it's with West's cue Backfire that we begin, as Night reflects upon the history of a trilogy nearly two decades in the making.  We should say that if you haven't seen Split and intend to do so anytime soon, you might want to wait before listening to this, though it wouldn't be the end of the world ...

This is the premiere episode of our 5th season, and we're shimmering with excitement! Spending four months away from all of you is just too long, so here we are! We're back with a movie that *ucked us up, and we sure hope it *ucked you up, too! Chicago actor & playwright Christopher M. Walsh stopped by to be our voice of authority. Be amazed as he tries to answer about 20 of the top 300 questions this movie left us with. Annihilation was just the first book in a three book series called the Southern Reach Trilogy written by Jeff VanderMeer, and Chris has read them all. The series belongs to a specific sub-genre called 'strange fiction', and guess what! The book was a whole lot stranger than the movie! So.. you know how The Shining (1980) is referred to as a great film and a terrible adaptation? SPOILER: Chris explains why Annihilation also fell victim to that same curse in the best possible way! We get our old friend and English professor Stuart Randolph on the phone, and our good friend and fellow Chicago filmmaker Joey Fandel stops by as well! So come for the shiny shimmer and stay for the disgusting body horror that's sure to follow. Our 5th season is gonna be killer, so thanks for your patience and welcome back to Movie Show Theater! https://www.instagram.com/movieshowtheater/ https://www.facebook.com/movieshowtheatre/ - intro and outro music courtesy of PUNCH DECK - Annihilation score excerpts courtesy of BEN SALISBURY & GEOFF BARROW

So we're delighted to finally bring you Daniel Pemberton, in a piece recorded a few months back in his London studio. Daniel is hot property right now. It's another very special Soundtracking this week as we take you to the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, where director Alex Garland and his composers Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury came together for a Q&A following an exclusive screening of Annihilation. As you may know, the film hasn't had a cinematic release outside the US. You can, however, watch Annihilation on Netflix, and it's well worth your time if you haven't seen it already. Unusually for us, there a couple of spoilers in this episode too, which is all the more reason to check the movie out. Before Alex joined everyone on stage, Edith caught up with Geoff and Ben in the bar to discuss their other work, specifically on Ex Machina and Ben Wheatley's Free Fire. Their first score together was for Dredd. At least, it would have been had the studio not decided it wasn't suitable for the film. Thankfully, they shared their efforts anyway under the guise of Drokk. And it's with a spot of Drokk that we began - which basically means you're in for a real treat.

Self-destruction. Division. Separation. Annihilation. These are the frivolous, lighthearted concerns of Alex Garland’s latest film, a mind-expanding sci-fi trip that finds Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny exploring “Area X,” a mutated piece of land encompassed by the full-on-double-rainbow-all-the-way that is the Shimmer. What’s going on here? What’s causing it? Does an answer even matter? Paul and Arlo dig into Annihilation’s writhing, metastasizing guts to discuss the beautiful, macabre work of production designer Matt Digby; the organic/electronic discomfit of Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury’s score; how Garland’s approach intentionally places the viewer at a distance; and that goddamn bear. A dope track taken from the highly anticipated mixtape "EAG 2" - available to order now at http://magmusic.ning.com/ with a BONUS CD About King Magnetic: King Magnetic got his start in 1995 opening for groups like The Fugees and headlining his own local shows. During his high school years he began a string of incarcerations for assaults, robberies and drugs. After a 5-year sentence for robbery in 2001, he faced drug & gun charges in New York. Upon being released from prison Magnetic decided to start a family while building his music catalog. He could still be seen performing regionally, gaining notoriety for his flow, while producing tracks for some of PA's independent artists. Magnetic began receiving some national attention in 2005 when he produced the Philadelphia anthem "The Sound of Philadelphia" for Reef the Lost Cauze. The song would go on to air on ESPN Monday Night Countdown, a 76ers game & a British Documentary. In 2007, Magnetic began recording his 1st official iTunes released mixtape, “Everything's A Gamble Vol. One” which showcased his beat-making and rhyming abilities. It consisted of songs from 2003 - 2006 & featured underground heavyweights such as: Channel Live, Sean Price, Edo G, Chino XL, Copywrite amongst others. While mixing "EAG" in July 2007, Magnetic was invited to appear on the Army of the Pharaohs (AOTP) 2007 LP "The Ritual of Battle". AOTP is a collective spearheaded by Jedi Mind Tricks' front man Vinnie Paz & features Apathy, Celph Titled, Esoteric, Reef the Lost Cauze & others. After standing out on tracks such as "Drama Theme" & "Black Christmas", Magnetic earned a spot as an official member in the Army of the Pharaohs. Shortly after making his cameos on AOTP's album, Magnetic shot his 1st promotional video, "I Don't Know You" debuted on Billboard.com, allmusic.com's Top 5 New Hip-hop Videos, ArtofRyhme.com & other music sites. In early 2008 he followed up with his "Crown Me" video & began doing more collaborations. Slowly becoming more visible, he entered a Red Bull Beat Battle, did some tour shows with JMT, and recorded with Young Guru and KRS-One for “Stop The Violence ‘08”. In 2009, Magnetic recorded for various projects including: Apathy’s “Wanna Snuggle?”, East Coast Avengers, Quaker’s project with Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, the 3rd AOTP LP, King & The Cauze - Shadyville mixtape and album - a collaboration album with Reef the Lost Cauze & “Everything’s A Gamble Vol. Two”. “EAG 2”  is set to have an all-star underground line-up including Slug of Atmosphere, Joell Ortiz, Termanology, Immortal Technique and others. Bobby cut his teeth in the big bad hip hop scene of Cambridge, before moving on to provide the scratches for Earthling where Geoff Barrow left off. More recently he's been vomiting mixes onto the internet at an astonishing rate, covering as many musical bases as humanely possible.   Despite having an unhealthy obsession with rappers whose names begin in “S”, Bobby is probably best known for Melancholy Flowers, the big girl's blouse of the mix world, but has also made mixes for Solid Steel, the Cactus Island label, and (mainly) his own head.   In this, his latest mix, he revisits some classic dancehall and lays it on a crispy bed of hip hop, drum 'n' bass and dubstep. And some Schoolly D.   Tracklisting: White Mice — Roots Music/Version (Basic Replay) LTJ Bukem — Danny’s Song (Good Looking) Chaka Demus — Original Kuff (Metro) Skream — Auto-Dub (Tempa) Schoolly D — Here We Go Again (Jive) Pan Sonic — Kuumuudessa (Blast First) The Specials — Concrete Jungle (2 Tone) Ed ‘Roughneck’ Robinson — Roughneck Sound/Dub (Greensleeves) Ganjah Posse — Say Listen To Me (Punani Mix) (Nervous) Goodie Mob — Cell Therapy (instrumental) (La Face) Daddy Freddy — Baba Loo (acapella) (Fashion) Hopeton Lindo — Slaughter/Dub Slaughter (Greensleeves) DJ Krust — Warhead (V) Willi Williams — Run Them A Run (Light In The Attic) Bunny General — Played By Dis Yah Sound Alone (Fashion) Cutty Ranks — Muder Sound Bwoy (Jamdown) Royal Flush — Worldwide (instrumental) (Blunt) Jahtari Riddim Force — Vigilante Dub (Jahtari) Sandoz — Monopolize and Destroy (Soul Jazz) Red Rose — Hotter Junglematical Style (Greensleeves) Iration Steppas — Wat Dem Ago Do (Dubhead) RSD — Pretty Bright Light (Punch Drunk) Styward — Dub Cowboys (Digidub) Skream — Irie (Soul Jazz) I-Roy — Run For Your Life (acapella) Rusko feat Danman — Jah Love (Tempa) Mala — Lean Forward (DMZ) 2562 — Kameleon (Tectonic) Peverelist — Roll With The Punches (Punch Drunk) Mala — Changes (Deep Medi Muzik) Phuture Assassins — Phuture Sound (Suburban Base) Omen — Aphrodite (Tectonic) Pinch feat Rudey Lee — Step 2 It (Soul Jazz) Kromestar — Quicktime (Fantastic 3)

Alex Garland's film Annihilation combines meditative storytelling with visceral body horror and action, all of which drew in AJJ frontman Sean Bonnette from the first time he saw it. So much so that he watched it over and over again while it was in theaters. He loved the movie's juxtaposition of otherwordly natural beauty with startling bouts of extreme violence, all set to an ambitious and unsettling score from Ben Salisbury and Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Bonnette is a true film aficionado who's been inspired by all Alex Garland's other works including Men and Devs, as well as the singular cinematic vision of Everything Everywhere All At Once.Be sure to check AJJ's new album Disposable Everything, out 5/26!Listen to AJJ frontman Sean Bonnette chat about this and more in the new episode.
