Actors, writers, directors and producers all have key roles in production - but one of the most important aspects in a film is the musical score - a score can literally make or break a film. Composer Lorne Balfe joins the Movies In Focus podcast about his work on the hugely acclaimed and massively successful Tom Cruise blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. Balfe worked on the film's music alongside the masterful Hans Zimmer and the legendary Harold Faltermeyer. Balfe started his career as Zimmer's assistant and over the last decade has become one of the most influential composers working in the film industry - delivering a variety of memorable scores in films such as Michael Bay's 13 Hours, 6 Underground and Ambulance, Marvel's Black Widow and many others He has also become an important composer when it comes to taking established film franchises and breathing new life into iconic scores like Balfe did with Terminator Genysis, Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Bad Boys For Life. It was his work with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible and Jerry Bruckheimer on Bad Boys which made him the perfect candidate to create new music - and update old themes - for Top Gun: Maverick. Lorne Balfe talks about the film scoring process and what it was like composing music for the follow-up to one of the most iconic soundtracks of the 1980s.
All musicians want to be actors and all actors want to be musicians. That's how you get David Bowie in the Labyrinth and the Bacon Brothers. To be fair, everyone wants to be in the movie business. Over the last couple of decades, changes in technology and tax incentive programs by state and local governments have made that somewhat easier for folks to do, without necessarily moving to Los Angeles full time. Wherever you do it, it's not going to be easy though. And it can be lonesome too, if you're embarking on a passion project. Brennan Robideaux has spent years pouring his time and life savings into one project: a documentary about pole vaulting Armand Duplantis, said to be perhaps the best to ever to do it and who grew up here in Lafayette. The movie is called Born to Fly and Brennan tracked Duplantis before he won gold and set records in the 2020 Olympic games, following him around the world to document his rise in a candid feature built on 700 hours of footage. Brennan grew up in Lafayette and opened a production company — Robideaux Creative — in 2018 to take on commercial work and other projects. Brennan's name might sound familiar to you because of his dad: former legislator and Lafayette mayor Joel Robideaux. Film maker Griff Furst credits the former mayor's cultural economy program with helping his company Curmudgeon Filmsmake a home here in Lafayette. Griff grew up in Van Nuys, California and in the entertainment industry, tagging along with his dad, actor Stephen Furst (a successful film producer though best known for his early work as an actor as "Flounder" in National Lampoon's Animal House), onto sets from a young age. Today, Griff makes movies both behind and in front of the camera. Griff has acting credits in films like the Magnificent 7 and Terminator Genysis and has directed several sci-fi thrillers under the Curmudgeon umbrella — movies as diverse as Ghost Shark and Cold Moon. Louisiana's production tax credit first brought Griff to Lafayette in 2008. He met his wife, a Lafayette native. They now split time between Lafayette, New Orleans and L.A. And he continues to run productions both in Louisiana and around the country. Conditions compelled us to record this edition of Out to Lunch Acadiana on Zoom. Next week we hope to be back at our regular lunch spot, Tula Tacos on Jefferson Street in Downtown Lafayette. Photos by Astor Morgan at our website, itsacadiana.com. And here's another interesting lunch table conversation about the Acadiana entertainment industry, specifically how the live music biz had to adapt to living with a pandemic. Matt and Brian take another stroll down memory lane by talking about Last Action Hero starring Arnold Schwarzenegger! They go over the lack luster block buster performance, how long and fast the hate train was for this movie, how Terminator: Genysis has great tension even when the plot is incredibly confusing, the director's thoughts going up against Jurassic Park, why "we" keep allowing Rob Zombie to make movies, the deeper messages voiced within Last Action Hero, why this movie is a bit too clever for it's own good, the weird Arnold movies after Last Action Hero, along with a lot of other ground that this movie covers!
Welcome to this weeks episode where Jim watches Futurama and does some noodling, Elton, goes back to work and tries to spread some ashes without interference, Darren realises to his dismay that Football may be a thing thats happening and and he watches Terminator Genysis and finally Lee has a sunday roast in a pub, watches Loki and tries not to die (or kill anyone) with a new electric shower. Then after some feedback for last weeks film its on to the happy jolly film about finding religion and caring for others as we join Saint Maud.
About This Episode: Robby Starbuck is a producer and director known for the cinematic style he brought to the music video genre. He has produced over 1,000 projects at his company RSM. Collectively his work has been viewed over 5 billion times. Robby has directed and produced the official music videos for multiple feature films such as Terminator: Genysis, Transformers: The Last Knight and Spongebob. Robby has directed and produced Hollywood stars like Natalie Portman, Jamie Foxx, Brad Pitt, Gina Rodriguez, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel and many more. He's also directed and produced the biggest names in entertainment like Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Megadeth, The Gaslight Anthem, Smashing Pumpkins, Sarah Bareilles and many more. Robby decided to risk his career by coming out as a proud conservative after seeing the warning signs of socialism in the United States. Being the son of a Cuban refugee inspired his entrance into politics as he reflected on the horrors his family had experienced in Cuba. Those experiences were seared into his mind as a young man by his Mom and Grandparents as they recounted to him how Cuba had been destroyed by leftism. It was all he needed to jump into politics to ensure he stood up and did something to prevent a similar decline for the United States. In 2015 Robby publicly endorsed President Donald J. Trump and began to publicly promote the President's policies that put America First. Needless to say, he was “cancelled” but that just made him get louder. He's been interviewed on President Trump's Facebook Page by Lara Trump, OAN, Bill O'Reilly, Breitbart, Sirius XM, Hugh Hewitt Show and many more. He's written political op-ed's in The Federalist, Orange County Register, LA Times and the Western Journal. He has recently announced his candidacy for Congress in 2022 in a bid to unseat Democrat Jim Cooper of Nashville. He and his wife also host a podcast called GrowUp Live where they talk about political issues and culture, interview culture influencers and political guests like Senator Rand Paul, Congressman Ken Buck, Dinesh D'Souza, Dennis Prager, Former Acting DNI Richard Grenell and many more. Robby announced his congressional run in a speech at CPAC in February 2021. What's the name of that director who makes movies longer than all the dicks of the Avengers combined (yes, with Ant-Man in Giant Man form)? Oh right, Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Wolf of Wallstreet). Yeah, imagine him curled up in bed looking for a new project then reading the same script cover to cover twice. That's how Shutter Island came to be. The film is adapted from author, Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name. Yes, the Lehane who wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone and holds a producer credit for this film. The adaptation was by Laeta Kalogridis, the creator of the Birds of Prey TV show and Altered Carbon on Netflix. She also previously wrote Nightwatch, Pathfinder, Alexander, Terminator Genysis, and Alita Battle Angel. The film stars Academy Award Winning (finally) actor, Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels. Mark Ruffalo is Chuck Aule, Teddy's new partner, who might not really exist. Sir Ben Kingsley is Dr. John Cawley, a psychiatrist with perhaps the most ambitious recovery plan since Richard Dreyfus in What About Bob? Max von Sydow is Dr. Jeremiah Naehring, the German brain doctor who Teddy suspects of being a Nazi! Michelle Williams is Dolores Chanal, a certain character's wife (but seriously, you should know whose). Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson are Rachel Solando, but which, if either, are real? Jackie Earle Haley is George Noyce and somehow his face is even more fucked up than in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. Ted Levine is the Warden, who might still be sitting on his own balls, though he isn't tucking his wiener back in this film. John Carroll Lynch is Deputy Warden McPherson, and inarguably gives a better performance than DiCaprio (fight me). Lastly, there is the actor nearest and dearest to Jake since he was a wee babe in the manger, Elias Koteas, AKA CASEY BUTTFUCKING JONES FROM NINJA TURTLES!, as Andrew Laeddis. This mystery/ thriller unfolds at Ashecliffe Hospital on Shutter Island. The Civil War fort turned asylum now holds three wards, A, B, and C, which hold psychotic patients with various degrees of violence. Two U.S. Marshalls have been called to investigate the escape of a patient, who seemingly disappeared. While tracking her down, Teddy reveals he has a separate interest in coming to the island: finding his wife's murderer! The culprit is arsonist, Andrew Laeddis, held in Ward C, for the most vicious of inmates/ patients. Drenched in hurricane downpours and suspense, Teddy and his partner search the grounds, leading to the revelation at the lighthouse. As the story unfolds we learn everything is not what it seems and everyone is not who they claim to be. . . Plot twists abound! We won't say which, but one character is certainly a fan of The Ramones, aiming for a Teenage Lobotomy of his own. This week's "Hidden Track" is Kill Her Mommy... Free Bonus Friday Enjoy (and you will enjoy) a snip of one of our bonus productions for supporting listeners, including The Discomfort Zone, In Pursuit of Utopia, Picture of the Month Club, and other older selections. (FULL AUDIO: 109 MINUTES) Is T2 is the best action film ever made? Thirteen-year-old Brett Veinotte thought so! It's certainly one of the most impressive sequels . Directed by James Cameron and released in 1991, T2 set a new standard for blockbuster films. Some of the (mind-boggling by 1991 standards) special effects might look a bit dated today, but there are numerous reasons this film has stood the test of time. We'll discuss... - the story laid out in The Terminator and Terminator 2, and the predestination paradox, but we don't get stuck here forever - what is the film trying to say about humanity, destiny, and hope? - the character arcs of Sarah Connor and the T-800 (Arnold) - Why the film's score works so well - T2 introduced cutting-edge CGI , but it should not overshadow the long list of perfectly executed practical effects - Pacing and the problem with the theatrical trailer - nothing about Terminator 3, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genysis (but the new film Dark Fate is canon with the first 2) PICTURE OF THE MONTH CLUB is a monthly series featuring Dutch - a delightful, insightful and successful film maker who wants to teach you the grammar and logic of cinema. Many will remember Dutch from the CINEMAnufacturing series. Released March 11th, 2020 on Patreon, A/V Club and SubscribeStar. The downloadable version of The Ideas Into Action Summit is now available. Visit sspuniversity.com/ideasintoaction to learn more about the presenters, topics, bonus materials and encore presentation.

A few years ago we all went to the movie theater and checked out Terminator: Genysis and then raced back to the Corner Of No Hope and turned on the mics to deliver to you, our beloved audience, our immediate thoughts on the first Terminator film in years to once again feature the almighty Arnold Schwarzenegger. We didn’t care for that movie, no fault of Arnold, but we couldn’t help but be optimistic when returning to the local cineplex this month to soak in the latest time-traveling extravaganza Terminator: Dark Fate. Did this flick improve upon the lackluster Genysis? Did we love it? Did we even like it? With the release of “Terminator: Dark Fate,” one of the most iconic franchises in film history is back in the limelight. Steve Wise (Sur'vi) and Jason Robbins (Monsters Anonymous) join Derek to discuss the making of the original Terminator (1:40), what makes “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” one of the greatest films ever made (16:12), and why “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” failed to capture the same charm as the first two films (33:05). They also talk about why “Terminator Salvation” deserves a second look (38:25), and the pros and cons with “Terminator: Genysis” (44:14). Finally, they discuss their thoughts on “Terminator: Dark Fate” (SPOILERS), and the overall legacy of the franchise (52:35).
THEY'RE BACK ! » Camacho entouré des T-800 Ilan « I’ll be back » Ferry, Julien « I’ll be bike » Munoz et Philippe « un café serré » Guedj venu remplacer le pourtant irremplaçable Pierre « L 214 » Delort.
Australian actor Jason Clarke is a rare breed—the character actor leading man. He gives a virtuoso performance as Grigory Potemkin, opposite Helen Mirren, in the new HBO mini-series “Catherine The Great.” He also stars in “Pet Cemetery,” “Dawn of the Planet of The Apes,” “Terminator Genysis,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” and won accolades for his portrayal of Ted Kennedy in “Chappaquiddick.” In this half hour he talks about his love of research, his dedication to the text, being there for the other actor, and the uselessness of fame. Plus much more!
This rugged Aussie has made a splash in such popular movies as Jack Reacher, A Good Day to Die Hard, the Divergent series, Terminator: Genysis, and Suicide Squad (as Captain Boomerang). But he’s a serious drama student who tackled Shakespeare’s Macbeth on stage in Melbourne not long ago. He’s also quite likable and willing to share his experiences working opposite some of the biggest names in show business. You can see his latest film, Semper Fi, on VOD right now. Leonard and Jessie were impressed with Jai and more than happy to spend an hour with him.
On this episode of Reel Garbage we travel back in time......then forward in time......and so does everyone else I guess? This movie was so confusing and unnecessary but kind of cool. You'll have to tune in to see what we had to say about it. Let's just say that we all had different opinions about this piece of trash.
As much as the title would have you believe, Terminator Genysis is not about how Skynet takes over the world with a 1990s Sega video game system. The latest in the Terminator series is part sequel, part reboot, part movie that didn't make enough to have the sequel immediately green-lit. Keeping with the serial number theme of the movie, the GBBV Crew sip on some Short's Batch 8000 while they discuss things such as time travel, robo-arthritis, and whether they would rather see their favorite series have endless sequels or an eventual reboot. Opening theme: Tha Silent Partner - Prohibition Brew and Pork Chops

I showed my 11 year old son and 12 year old daughter (both massive budding film geeks) the first 2 Terminator movies. They really liked the first, and we watched T2 a couple days later. Leading up to T2, I didn't let them watch a trailer, or even read the back of the DVD packaging. I brought them into it cold. They had no idea that Arnold's Terminator was going to be a good guy. When he protects John for the first time in the shopping mall, and fights the T-1000, their jaws dropped. They were shocked. My son jumped up with his hands in the air and started running around yelling "YES! YES! YES!" (Guess what he's going to be for Halloween this year?) The "twist" that Arnold was a good guy was thrilling for them, and they loved it. Great experience for them. The funny thing is, I was 16 when T2 came out, is that this wasn't ever a "twist". Everybody knew when they saw T2 that Arnold was the good guy. I don't think a single person in 1991 walked into the theater without knowing that. Cameron does structure it so that it could be a surprise. He doesn't give it away, although if you really think about the biker bar scene it's pretty obvious. But knowing the twist didn't diminish the enjoyment or love of the movie. It's always been one of my favorite action movies of all time. But in terms of your conversation about coming into the movie "pure", this is an example of some real benefit and joy that came from that. Knowing the twist (that wasn't really a twist) didn't ruin the movie for anyone, but man did it add to the experience for them. Can you think of any other "twists" that everybody knew about going in, where the movie could of benefited from viewers coming in blind?” Peter's Picks: Castaway, Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genysis, (Passengers on the other hand?), 10 Cloverfield Lane? Danny tackles Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary which charts the singer's tragically short lived life encompassing her phenomenal songwriting talent, her treatment by the media and her problems with addiction. Then Sam joins him to the review Terminator Genysis, which is essentially the same film but with more time travel and robots. In which our heroes live in the future, travel back to the past and then travel back to the future for a bit as they set their sights on fixing Terminator Genysis. It's a jumbled mess as we take a look at the original timeline, the altered timeline, our new ideal timeline and the rat based diet that awaits us all in the future. Zammit uses a sponge to explain Jai Courtney's face, Duscher accidentally spoils the magic of podcasting and special guest Sam Pratt-White just wants us to remember key points in the Terminator franchise. So stand up and lead the resistance... or let Skynet take over, whatever, we don't care and neither does this franchise. Want to help Skynet in their efforts to advance technologies? The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The geeks share their thoughts on the new Fantastic Four trailer and get you up to speed on the current Hollywood news, including rehashed properties like Terminator: Genysis and new Marvel films. Had enough of old 80s films? Ben and Malachi argue over the merits of rebooted franchises before recommending some you should check out!

I may or may not be using different variations of "The Force Awakens" until I feel like I beat that saying to death. Why? Gives me an excuse to not have to combine titles or come up with a witty title. Nonetheless I start things off with my review of Horrible Bosses 2. Following that up is the Trailer Spot with Star Wars: The Force Awakens (thus the title), Jurassic World, and Terminator Genysis. After that is the Box Office Report and the news! And for the Closing Comments I briefly talk about Game of Thrones: Iron from Ice. Enjoy the show! Opening and Closing Song- Can't Hold Us by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Ray Dalton
