Kelsi and Trey react to Tom Cruise's final MI film in 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' plus we rank all eight Mission: Impossible films, from De Palma's paranoid thriller to McQuarrie's AI-fighting epics, and trace how the franchise evolved from emotional espionage to Cruise-as-messiah spectacle. We dive deep into each entry's themes, set pieces, and shifting tone, debating what was gained in stunt-driven mythmaking and what was lost in Ethan's emotional core. Along the way, we probably say “MI3 is underrated” a dozen times and that 'Fallout' is a bit overrated, but this is a fun-subjective list! The Extra Credits YouTube ChannelBecome a member of The Extra Credits+ on Patreon hereHow to link Patreon to Spotify and AppleLetterboxd: The Extra CreditsTikTok: The Extra CreditsReddit: r/TheExtraCreditsInstagram: @theextracreditsTwitter: @theextracreditsSend requests, questions, and thoughts to our email: extracreditspod@gmail.com

“Sound Speed Action” is back with the newest episode in our countdown to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Now we're entering Christopher McQuarrie mode with the next film: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015).Writer and veteran Hollywood script doctor Christopher McQuarrie directs his first Mission Impossible and assembles a great team behind the camera to inject more energy into this thrill ride. Joe Kraemer delivers a pulsing orchestral score straight out of the original TV series. Eddie Hamilton joins as the wizard editor (Top Gun: Maverick, Kingsman), keeping everything moving at a fun clip.We talk about what we really enjoyed. Cruise is great, but Simon Pegg's Benji really steps up and commands his scenes. Rebecca Ferguson's debut as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust is superb—she elevates the movie with charisma and badassery. Sean Harris is fun as our super creepy villain, though it's tough to get too excited since the bar for villains hasn't been set very high. Alec Baldwin as Hunley is fantastic, and McQuarrie uses him brilliantly as a way for the franchise to poke fun at itself (“Sir, Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny—and he has made you his mission”). The Vienna Opera House sequence is a unique thrill. Some odd choices pop up—the snakeskin shirt (you'll know it when you see it), and a bad CGI car flip. But honestly, there's not much to knock.McQuarrie's been hyped up a lot on this show already, and now that we're here at his first Mission as director… what do you think? Enough action for you? We haven't even begun yet.Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is available to stream now on Prime Video and Paramount Plus. It's also available to rent and buy now on all platforms. Despite these sobering findings, the hosts reaffirm their belief in equity markets, emphasizing diversification and the historical outperformance of stocks over bonds. This week, I was honored to bring one of my dearest friends & fellow "Brunette Dad with Bangs" aboard Watch With Jen for her first-ever podcast appearance. A long-in-the-works collaboration that Priscilla Page & I began planning in the summer of '22, the very first time we hung out as we cruised around to chat & see the lights of L.A. on a summer night, it's only fitting that we made her debut a hangout episode about cars.More leisurely paced than your typical release, at the start of our discussion, I ask Priscilla about her background as a writer & the date in her twenties that made her first fall in love with cars. Soon, however, we shift our focus to two films & chase scenes starring Tom Cruise that she's written about & adores in writer-director Christopher McQuarrie's JACK REACHER & MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING.Part 1 of a two-part episode focusing on two filmmakers who've crafted some of the most delightful car sequences in American film, you'll hear us tackle director John Frankenheimer's GRAND PRIX & RONIN next. The perfect accompaniment to your holiday travel & a terrific way to begin to close out this season of the podcast, I'm so delighted to introduce you to one of my favorite people beyond the staggeringly great film essays that she's penned over the years in this wonderful conversation. (Note: You won't have to wait very long for Part 2; it will be dropping earlier than usual as my holiday gift to you.)Bio: One of the brightest & most popular lights of Film Twitter, Priscilla Page writes about cars, movies, and cars in movies, focusing mostly on your dad's favorites: actioners, thrillers, westerns, etc. Her bylines include Hagerty, Autoweek, Empire Magazine, The Guardian, Polygon, Birth.Movies.Death., and Bright Wall/Dark Room. Episode 30 - SPOILER Review: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)Audio recorded on September 25, 2023Strikes updates: 1) There is a tentative deal in place for the full WGA union to vote on! Starting on Wednesday September 27th, the WGA can resume work. Ratification of the new 3 year deal is expected to happen very soon. 2) As of September 25th, we are almost 2.5 months (73 days) into the ongoing strike between SAG-AFTRA (acting union) and the AMPTP (body representing the studios)Here we go! This is the movie for 2023 that I was waiting for. I was so amped and ready for this movie by the time it was released. It did not disappoint. Today's episode is a spoiler review episode for the summer blockbuster “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One”. Ethan Hunt and the IMF are back for this latest chapter.I have said it before and I will say it again, Director Christopher McQuarrie is the reason why I get so excited for the Mission Impossible movies. He has been actively involved going back to the 4th movie, “Ghost Protocol”. McQuarrie and Cruise make a fantastic creative team. This 7th installment of the franchise has a ridiculous (in a good way) cast - Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell (awesome addition), Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales (Ozark), Cary Elwes, Henry Czerny (Kittridge is back!) - I mean come on! Amazing cast. In typical mission fashion there are amazing stunts, fantastic locations and another thrill-delivering soundtrack by returning Composer Lorne Balfe. The movie is a ride and engages you by making you care with a pretty good emotional story too like with the 6th movie, “Fallout”.“Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One” is available for digital purchase (and hopefully to rent too) on October 10th. In the podcast episode I mentioned to skip renting and just move on to buying it (Paramount is not paying me). That's how enthusiastic I am for this movie.Enjoy the movie and thanks for listening. “The world is changing. Truth is vanishing.”Ethan Hunt and Co. Are BackFor our July member bonus episode, we wrap up our conversation about Ethan Hunt and his impossible missions. For Christopher McQuarrie's latest entry into the franchise, Ethan and his team are up against none other than a form of sentient AI they call The Entity. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we close our chats in our Mission: Impossible series – at least until next year's conclusion to this story – with McQuarrie's 2023 film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.Here's a hint at what we talk about. It's a great entry to the franchise, and we certainly spoil it. The characters are great, the action sequences are a thrill, the story works well. If anything, there are elements that feel clunky within some of the exposition, the camera work, the editing and the structure. Is this because McQuarrie shot two lengthy films back to back and might've been overwhelmed? Is it because he's trying to create a unique look and feel for each of his films in this franchise? Is he trying to create tension with creative shots that just aren't working? It's hard to say, but we certainly noticed it.The story largely focuses on a form of AI that grows some form of sentience that partners up with one of Hunt's old adversaries then works to control the world. With the zeitgeist around AI right now, it's quite fitting. We discuss the nature of this story today – and the fact that they were originally intending it to be released two full years ago – and why it works in context of this world. It feels like a perfect next step for the franchise. We talk about elements brought in from previous films that we noticed as well, and walk through the action beats. There's a lot to discuss. See the list for our entire lineup for SEASON 13 on our Letterboxd page!“The IMF is like Halloween, a bunch of grown men in rubber masks playing trick-or-treat.”Hunt Is Back, and He's Better Than Ever... ReallyIt's crazy that we're at the sixth film in the franchise and it's the best of the bunch. How does that happen? Likely, it's because Cruise has been driving this franchise not just as star but also producer from the start, but it's hard to dismiss the fact that writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returned. His sense of this story, these characters, and this world seems to fit hand to glove as much as Cruise does. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Mission: Impossible series with McQuarrie's 2018 film Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Here's a hint at what we talk about. It's like they take all the greatest moments from the previous five films and find ways to integrate reworked versions of them into this film. It's fantastic. We walk through the various action beats in this film, starting with the over two-and-a-half minute single shot of Hunt and Walker doing a HALO jump into Paris. And it only gets better from there.Hunt is dealing with Solomon Lane again, but we're also adding John Lark into the mix. It's a bit of a mystery as to who he is, but... not really. It's hard to buy Lark, aka August Walker, as anything but villainous. Is it the way Henry Cavill plays him? Or is he just written that way? Regardless, he makes for a great villain and works exceptionally well in this franchise. There's also the return to Julia as a key part in Hunt's life. It plays well, and clearly is an important point to Hunt learning to navigate his life when it comes to saving the world vs. saving those he loves. That plays not only into Julia's story but also Ilsa, as clearly something is developing here with her in her return. All in all, it's a great film that shows insane stunt work by Cruise, a broken ankle, great characters, a thrilling and engaging story, and a mystery as to where it could go from here. See the list for our entire lineup for SEASON 13 on our Letterboxd page!“We're kind of formulating a plan B, although technically it's a plan C.”Everyone's Gone Rogue in Rogue NationChristopher McQuarrie did some uncredited rewrites on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, though he'd worked with Tom Cruise a number of times in the past, having written and directed Jack Reacher then writing Edge of Tomorrow. Clearly, his strength as a storyteller, perhaps more than his friendship with Cruise, led Cruise to offer him the opportunity to help the fifth Mission: Impossible film. That opportunity to not only work on the script but also direct seemed to be the right formula Cruise (perhaps more the producer than the star) was looking for to bring the franchise into right zone he'd been looking for from the start. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our journey through our Mission: Impossible series with a conversation about McQuarrie's 2015 film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Here's a hint at what we talk about.Right out of the gate, we're given an exciting action sequence, one which had been advertised relentlessly to draw audiences to the film to see Cruise hanging off the side of a plane. For real. It's insane but makes for a great start to the movie. Plus, we get more comedy with the team and intrigue as the IMF gets shut down by the Senate, which puts Ethan on the run. It's a thrill of a way to start the movie that shows we're on the right track now.The team is great, keeping Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and the ever-consistent Ving Rhames from the last film. It's our first full repeat, and it works well. We do have questions about the roles of each of the team members though. Are they given enough delineation between them? Is this, perhaps, why Jeremy Renner doesn't return? The big surprise is the addition of Rebecca Ferguson who proves herself Cruise's equal and brings tremendous chemistry as a British spy working both with and against Hunt at seemingly every turn. She's incredibly compelling and is stunning in that dress. Of course the villain has to work for the team to be of any interest, and we're fans of what Sean Harris is bringing as ex-MI6 operative Solomon Lane, the head of The Syndicate. He's compelling, and the plot moves in exciting directions dictated by him. It's a thrill of a film in a franchise that only gets better. BIO: Edward McQuarrie is Professor Emeritus at Santa Clara University. He writes on market history and personal finance, and his research has been mentioned in columns in the Wall Street Journal, Marketwatch, and Barron's.STORY: Edward opened an account to trade naked puts. When the financial crisis of 2008 hit, he thought it was a good time to sell his puts. He ended up losing almost all the money in his account.LEARNING: Keep your play money small. Never trade your treasury bond until maturity to avoid losses. “I find intermediate treasuries to be superior to total bonds, especially for new investors.”Edward McQuarrie Guest profileEdward McQuarrie is Professor Emeritus at Santa Clara University. He writes on market history and personal finance, and his research has been mentioned in columns in the Wall Street Journal, Marketwatch, and Barron's. His papers can be downloaded from SSRN.com, and he posts as McQ at Bogleheads.org, where you can view some of the charts mentioned today.Worst investment everYears ago, Edward gave himself a small play account to keep his hands off the money in his 401(k) account. In that play account, which he opened with a broker, Edward began to trade options, and more particularly, he began to sell naked puts. Then the great financial crisis of 2008 hit. Edward had been trading puts and calls for four or five years at that point. By November 2008, the Lehman Brothers had already gone bust, and the markets were going down, so Edward thought this was an excellent time to sell a naked put.At that point, Edward had $21,000 in his play account, and his maintenance requirement was only $11,000. A day later, he logged into his account and found a balance of $11,000 and a $21,000 maintenance requirement. This meant Edward was $10,000 short. His best option was to take the loss and reduce the maintenance requirement. So after 30 minutes of frenzy to position covering, Edward still got a margin of about $2,000, which he had to cover with money outside the play account.Lessons learnedKeep your play money small.Always have a lifeline in case you totally screw it up.Nobody holding a US Treasury to maturity loses their money nominally. It's when you trade them before maturity that you can lose significantly.Andrew's takeawaysAlways have a backup plan to survive.Get into a short-duration bond when you think that bond prices will fall. On the other hand, invest in a long-duration bond if you think that prices will rise.No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsEdward's number one goal for the next 12 months is to write as much good stuff as he can pump out the door.Parting words “Own the total stock market, just like Andrew said.”Edward McQuarrie [spp-transcript] Connect with Edward McQuarrieLinkedInWebsiteBooksAndrew's books

Luckily with toys, we primarily worry about fan service. Man, this time around I think we got some great service. The G1 Jetfire Deco Valkyrie from Kitz Concept is amazing, if not pricey. Any toy based on McQuarrie concepts is going to be a favorite with me. Same thing with MOTU mini-comic homages, especially those of one of my favorite characters. I can't think of better fan service than farming out your license so fans get even more product. Are you in on the HIYA Exquisite Mini Joes?
