During our Next Level discussion about this very episode, our friend Sacha counted up how many times we've had Jason Graves on an episode of Level, and Level's friend, Top Score. Six times on Top Score, six times on Level, and this marks the 13th ep dedicated to his music. Best part is, we know there will be many more! This time, it's all about battle royale and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II DLC called Warzone. The Warzone maps are DLC for Modern Warfare II players, and Jason's released a soundtrack of the music from them. It's always great having him on the show - I always learn something about his approach and I can't wait our next conversation! Come chat with us on Discord about game music, and see the video of my conversation with Jason on the Level with Emily YouTube channel. We're joined today by Emily Reese; Minnesota Public Radio newscaster, VGM podcast legend and co-creator of the Level with Emily Reese and Top Score podcasts with Sam Keenan. She is a trumpet player, and studied music education and jazz studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder and received her master's degree in Music Theory from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Emily is an avid gamer (RPGs and FPS games are a favorite), and a lover of music with jazz and classical in particular. Today's show began as an interview with Emily but quickly turned into the three of us talking shop about the inner workings of creating the best possible podcast. All the discussion of audio editing and interview planning you can handle, as well as some career highlights from the trio. It's not our typical show format, but we had a great time talking with a fellow podcast host and kindred spirit. Emily started her radio career in 2005 and began working at Minnesota Public Radio in 2008, where she and Sam created Top Score in 2011. Top Score was one of the earliest and most prominent video game music podcasts which featured interviews with some of the most famous composers in the industry. It ushered in an era of mainstream game music appreciation, as well as being a huge inspiration to many aspiring VGM podcasters including us here at Pixelated Audio! After Top Score ended in 2015, Emily and Sam created a new podcast to carry the torch, Level with Emily Reese, which focuses on broader game audio topics including composers, sound designers, voiceover actors and performers. Her vast musical and audio knowledge make Emily's interviews with composers and audio professionals some of the most in-depth around. If you'd like to hear more, check out Level with Emily Reese, which currently has over 200 episodes and releases on an almost weekly cadence. The show can be found on their website, on YouTube, on your favorite podcast platform, or on their Patreon page. Composer Vincent Diamante's music for Sky: Children of the Light is gentle, gorgeous and uplifting. The palette is mostly orchestral, especially in the early volumes of the soundtrack (there are 4 volumes, currently). The game is from thatgamecompany, known for its brilliantly designed indie games such as Journey, Flower and Flow. Vincent composed for Flower, and that soundtrack remains one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time. There's likely an old Top Score episode with Vincent and me floating around out there in cyberspace about that score. I loved talking with Vincent again, loved learning about how he composed and recorded it, and loved meeting Copper. You can find a playlist and support Level with Emily on Patreon. About Lisa Collum and Top Score Writing: Fifteen years ago, Lisa Collum was frustrated by this reality while working as a teacher in a Title I school. She became frustrated watching countless students fail or struggle with writing, and their scores on standardized tests indicated a path that needed corrective action. There was no curriculum available to help teachers focus on real writing skills and to help students develop this critical life skill. Lisa took this challenge as her own. She studied the common areas where students struggled and developed a curriculum to support students and teachers alike. In less than a year, she turned her entire class around from nearly failing to achieve a 100% pass rate. This is where Top Score Writing was born. With such impactful results, word quickly spread the power of Lisa's curriculum. Top Score Writing has since grown to include full teacher curriculums for 2nd through 12th grade, and now includes student workbooks, a digital curriculum, animated lessons, PowerPoint lessons, scoring, and professional development training. Today, Top Score Writing remains the only proven system that makes teaching writing easier, helps students learn more effectively, and is proven to achieve a 70% increase in writing test scores, on average. Top Score Writing is building the future writers of tomorrow and impacting the lives of every student who earns this foundation after completing the curriculum successfully. Top Score Writing® is a simple and effective approach to informative/explanatory, opinion/argumentative and narrative teaching that prepares students for the state writing assessment providing both interactive online and blending learning resources to schools and districts. Writing is the Fastest & Easiest Way to Increase Test Scores & Overall School Grades! Most schools rely solely on reading and grammar programs to teach ELA skills, yet today's tests are heavily weighted on a student's ability to write. The lack of writing-specific curriculums results in lower writing scores and lower ELA scores across the board. Schools that implement Top Score Writing call us their "secret weapon" because Top Score Writing's curriculum quickly and easily raises test scores on the ELA and across the board. After years of analyzing data, we can directly correlate the improvement in writing scores to higher overall grades. What is Top Score Writing? The one and only program specifically designed to prepare students for the State Writing Test! Top Score Writing is a Research Based Program. Many counties require that schools use research-based programs and Top Score Writing is just that! This is proven in a white paper written by IESD. Interactive Educational Systems Design (IESD) specializes in research to support product development and marketing, and in effective communication with educational decision makers. Lisa is a true writing rockstar, but more importantly, she knows how to run a business like a CEO teacher! 15 years ago, Lisa Collum was working at a Title One school and became frustrated watching countless students fail or struggle with writing on standardized tests. In less than a year, Lisa was able to turn her class around from nearly all failing to achieving a 100% pass rate. Lisa was able to do that with class after class, regardless of how much the students had struggled in the past. Soon, every teacher in the school was demanding Lisa's curriculum and Top Score Writing was born. Top Score Writing has since grown to include full teacher curriculums for grades second through 12th as well as student workbooks, digital curriculum, scoring, and training. LBRY is building the ultimate content distribution protocol. This protocol combines blockchain, P2P data distribution, and good old fashioned applications, to provide the first direct-to-audience distribution pipeline without middlemen. Each element of the LBRY software suite is open-source and available on Github. Anyone can build applications on top of the LBRY protocol or fork existing ones, taking advantage of the LBRY blockchain to meet their content needs for any type of media. Watch, read, and play in a decentralized digital library controlled by the community, not algorithms. Ultimately, LBRY is a sharing platform that uses blockchain technology to enable users to publish material and get paid for doing so. People using LBRY’s service can monetize their published material with its built-in payment system. The concept melds together the great technical advantages of both Bitcoin and BitTorrent services for people looking to share content. For an upcoming project, LBRY is offering 200,000 LBC for developers to compete to launch their apps, projects, and social platforms. These competitive designs will allow for grant funding through the LBRY Foundation. Prior to this effort -- LBRY has approved of 21 projects and gave out close to 1 million LBC for musicians, for conferences to connect people in India, and for video personalities as well as animators to post their work. Intrigued and wanting to find out more, I invited Jeremy Kauffman, Co-Founder and CEO of LBRY onto my daily tech podcast. Jeremy knows how to build and scale a startup starting from day one. Jeremy created LBRY because he fell in love with the idea of shared, global content registry that is owned and controlled by no one. Unsurprisingly, he is a longtime supporter of decentralized technology and freedom of information. Prior to LBRY, Jeremy founded TopScore, a startup that processes millions of dollars monthly in event and activity registrations. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he received degrees in physics and computer science.

Today, I am joined by Jeremy Kauffman! Jeremy is the founder and CEO of LBRY.io and recently joined the Board of Directors of The Free State Project. Listen as we start off our discussion by focusing on LBRY.io. LBRY.io is Jeremy's New Hampshire-based blockchain company that produces and maintains a decentralized content sharing and publishing platform. We also touch on Jeremy's previous venture, TopScore, which is a startup Jeremy founded that processes millions of dollars monthly in event and activity registrations. During the last half of the show, Jeremy and I discuss The Free State Project. The Free State Project is a mass migration of more than 20,000 people who have pledged to move to New Hampshire for liberty. By concentrating their numbers in a single state, their goal is to maximize their impact as activists, entrepreneurs, community builders, and thought leaders. Free Staters are neighborly, productive folks from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors, who are on a mission to prove that more liberty leads to more prosperity for everyone. Cassie Price is a Credit Strategist and Credit Repair Expert at Wealth Generation Collective who offers the Credit Score Builders Lab Course. She can help you repair your credit and understand credit numbers like never before. Are you looking to thrive with your finances, credit and overall lifestyle design? There is something powerful about having money and credit available to you. The reality is pulling, looking at and dealing with credit scores can be daunting for most people. Cassie helps people realize and use tools that ultimately give them more money. CREDIT SCORES Let’s start with the basics. Credit scores. A credit score is really an algorithm based on financial risk. It is common knowledge is there are 3 credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and Transunion but most people don’t know about having multiple credit scores. You have an auto score, mortgage score, credit card score and they are different for every bureau. There are also are free scores from NerdWallet, Credit Karma and companies such as this. Their scores can be very different from the FICA scores. Your job is to manipulate each one to get to get the highest credit score. Over a 700, this is a perfect score and you get top tier financing. 850, Top Score 660-720, Good 300, Lowest Creditors not only do they look at the number but they look at your financial habits. These habits show how you are being and how you walk into a financial matter. So how do you work all this in your favor? FIXING YOUR CREDIT Sometimes, making a little tweak your credit a little might mean you save $20-$100/month. The part of the credit score you have the most control over is credit utilization. This is the percentage of your total credit available you are utilizing at that particular time. This factors in at 30% of your credit score. For example, if you have $10,000 total credit and you have $1,000 credit you have a 10% utilization. This is where you have some control, if you max out all your credit cards in one month, your credit would lower 100 points and if you pay off all your cards in another month, it would raise 100 points. Let’s go say you are going to get a car, you want your balances to be really low for a few months prior to a major purchase. You get better items and premium financing. I WISH MY CREDIT SCORE WERE BETTER For most people credit scores bring an intense source of shame, no matter what their number is. Sometimes a lower credit score is a matter of not having the credit history to change your number. For example, Cassie has a client that was in the 750 credit score range but wanted to be near 800. After a simple recommendation to call her credit card company and ask for an increase in her credit limit, this adjusted her utilization ratios and now her score is almost 800. So what if your score is not as high as this? Pulling your credit score can be daunting for most people. This is about looking where you are at. Not looking or knowing where you are at financially comes from the horrible feeling of avoiding the reality of what is. Perhaps you don’t want to open your mail because how you makes you feel. Don’t panic! A 500 score is not the end of the world! There will be negative information on your report - pay history, collections, maxed credit cards, liens, late payments, judgements. The good part of this is that is a lot to work with. What Cassie does is challenge everything with the bureaus. When you have negative issues on your credit report, this allows you to chip away on things you can fix and start have positive pay history. STRATEGY Most people who have a 750-800 credit score have a installment payment like a car loan, student loan, or mortgage and 3-4 credit cards with a 50% credit utilization using 2-5% of it every month and paying it off monthly. Have a rewards credit card for everyday purposes and have a cash back credit card for utility bills, cell phone bills, etc. You want to have credit lines on different networks. This is a numbers game. YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE Ultimately, you want to become the person where credit becomes important to you because welcoming more money is easier with better credit. Your future self that is powerful with money and they feel good about their credit score. NEED HELP Not sure how to improve your credit score on your own? This show is from the Wayback Machine, and Emily has done a lot since this. She currently does a podcast called Level with Emily Reese for one, and she runs a company called Joon Media. (I’ll post what she was doing at the time of our interview below.) What I remember most about this interview is 1) having my mind blown about Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and 2) Emily’s laugh, which I think you’ll agree is pretty great. ———————————————————————————————- Beethoven’s Fifth. We’ve never done a show on it because everybody knows it! Right? Emily Reese, on air host for Classical Minnesota Public Radio, host of Top Score (part of the Infinite Guest podcast series), and creator of MPR’s Learning to Listen, says that we are wrong, so wrong! Emily takes us through the entire symphony, which, as it turns out, is completely surprising and amazing. Plus, we play drinking games! Or at least give you some to play. Music in this episode: Symphony No. 5, Ludwig van Beethoven. Played by Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, and conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. Archiv. Audio production by Todd “The Tower” Hulslander with fear of heights by Dacia Clay.

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW One of our original hosts, Dvora Meyers has just published The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Breaking of Gymnastics' Top Score - from Nadia to Now. The book is the latest must-have in the gym nerd library. It examines the evolution of elite women’s gymnastics over the last few decades and answers questions that gymnastics fans have been asking since the last perfect score was handed out over 20 years ago. She reveals why successful female gymnasts are older and more athletic than they have ever been before, how the United States became a gymnastics powerhouse, and what the future of gymnastics will hold. Lauren and Jessica chat with Dvora about (4:45): MythBusters in the book: Who were Nadia’s actual first gymnastics coaches, when the open-ended scoring system came about, East Germany set precedent for the current American training system. A few weeks ago, I got to participate in a very fun live composing event at GlitchCon, called Game Music Melee. Three of us composers got up onstage to write video game music on the spot, based on game suggestions from the audience, in JUST 30 MINUTES. Not a lot of time. Emily Reese of the Level with Emily podcast hosted, and after two rounds of composing, she interviewed us about our process. It turned out so cool, I wanted to post it as this week's Composer Quest episode.
It's time for another installment of Favorites with Friends! This time, the guys welcome their buddy Emily Reese, a fellow video game music podcaster who you'll know from her past show Top Score, and her new show, the Joon Media Podcast! Emily brings in a playlist of some of her favorite VGM to share and discuss. Enjoy! 10/18/15
