Mike is joined by Father Malone (Midnight Viewing) and Chris Stachiw (The Kulturecast) to dig into Marvel's latest reboot attempt, Fantastic Four: First Stps (2025), the long-awaited introduction of Marvel's First Family into the MCU. Directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, the film blends retro aesthetics with multiversal madness as Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny leap from the 1960s into present-day chaos.Does Shakman finally crack the code that's eluded three previous FF films? Or does Marvel's Phase 6 entry stretch itself too thin? The trio tackles the film's performances, its ties to Kang and the Secret Wars setup, and whether this version lives up to the legacy of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee's original cosmic explorers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. So which movie was dumber and more suitable for booger eating six year olds? Find out!Watch to the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/cZCszsepEVM

Nerd Legion breaks down Fantastic Four First Steps, critiquing its flawed storyline, sometimes questionable CGI, and underwhelming writing. They discuss the film's failed promise and compare it to other Marvel and non-Marvel films, highlighting both the good and the not-so-good aspects. The film struggles to maintain the audience's suspension of disbelief and mostly squanders a strong start by the time the heroes visit Galactus in space. In spite of generally solid casting with Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby in the lead roles, believable chemistry between the actors, and a compelling alternate Earth with a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic, the film ultimately is weighed down by poor writing.

Marvel’s First Family is back for a fourth time. On this week’s episode of Cinemaholics, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton unpack The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the latest attempt to reboot Marvel’s unluckiest franchise. With Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach suiting up for a 60s-inspired, retro-futurist take, director Matt Shakman (WandaVision) brings serious style to a film that’s long on vibes but maybe short on soul. We break down the film’s visual direction, ensemble performances, and the Galactus-sized question at its core: what is the point of another reboot? Plus, we debate the movie’s oddly hollow emotional arc, its meta-commentary on Marvel fatigue, and how it stacks up against the previous iterations of the Fantastic Four. Is this a first step in the right direction or another cosmic trip into irrelevance? Tune in to find out! Links: Read Jon’s written review of the film here! After looking back over all the previous attempts to bring Marvel's Fantastic Four to the big screen last month, we review the introduction to Marvel's first family into the MCU: The Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. It's easily the most these characters have ever been done justice on film, with great lead performances, excellent retro-futuristic production design, and a particularly fun second act in the depths of outer space. We discuss how the film could stand to take a few more risks and go a bit deeper with its characters and themes, as First Steps ultimately plays things safe in the way most Marvel movies do, but this is still the best film to come out of the MCU in a long time. The Fantastic Four finally arrive in the MCU... sort of? Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing must unite to save an alternate Earth from Ralph Ineson's Galactus and Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, but are their power's combined enough to set Marvel's Multiverse Saga back on track? Our latest guest on Soundtracking is Matt Shakman, director of the latest adventure in the MCU - The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn as the titular team, it's set in the 1960s of a retro-futuristic world where the Fantastic Four must protect against the planet consuming cosmic being, Galactus.
The Fantastic Four are back again in a new movie--and it's an eye-popping good time. The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the famously fractious family with amazing powers who tangle with a godlike being who wants to eat the Earth. We've seen this story before, but the vibe is different this time. It's a brighter, boldly colored retro-future with flying cars, semi-helpful household robots and lots of talk about the importance of family.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureWe'd love to know what you think about Pop Culture Happy Hour.
