Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay got the whole wide world, in their hands, as they discuss 'Con Air.' Bombay opens the proceedings by telling the time he had his own flight from hell from Asia which involved being awake for 36 hours after a bender, with his arm in a sling. Then the fellas talk about one of the goofiest studio movies of the '90s, a film where Jerry Bruckheimer tapped a gun for hire to do his best Michael Bay impression, and the KY budget was record breaking as everyone glistened on screen. Nic Cage's flowing locks, and hackey inconsistent sometimes southern, sometimes Cajun accent, gets top billing, but it's an insanely stacked cast. John Malkovich chews scenery to degrees that'll make your jaw hurt, Danny Trejo is an ultra predatory latin Pepe le Pew, and Steve Buscemi is a poetic psychopath who wears heads for hats. Meanwhile, approximately 58% of the plot revolves around Cage's Poe securing insulin for his friend. None of it makes sense, but it ends with not one, but two wild crash scenes that tear up the majority of the Las Vegas strip. Whether you love the movie or find it overly cartoonish you'll want to tune in for this episode ... "or the bunny gets it."
On the one hand, the IMAX-driven spectacle of F1 is undeniably satisfying to watch on the big screen; on the other hand, we all walked out of Joseph Kosinski's second teamup with producer Jerry Bruckheimer unsure whether it qualifies as a movie and not just a sophisticated simulation thereof. Despite the star power of Brad Pitt and a plethora of familiar sports-movie tropes, there's a human element missing from F1 that left us all slightly perplexed, and which is thrown into even sharper relief when placed against the character-driven comedy of the other film in this pairing, TALLADEGA NIGHTS. But despite their drastically different points of view, the two share some uncanny similarities that we get into during Connections, from their shared narrative tension between team loyalty and individual glory, to a crash-and-burn approach to trauma, to a wallpaper-like view of corporate sponsorship. Then we take an extra lap on this racing pairing with a Your Next Picture show recommendation for the long-running Netflix docuseries F1: DRIVE TO SURVIVE. Please share your thoughts about TALLADEGA NIGHTS, F1, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. In 2022, director Joseph Kosinski wowed us with amazing sights from inside fighter jets in “Top Gun: Maverick.” In 2025, he's dropping our jaws to the floor with awesome sights from inside F1 race cars in the summer blockbuster “F1” starring Brad Pitt. PItt plays veteran driver Sonny Hayes who is asked by his friend, who owns a team, to help them win and maybe mentor their young driver too. Hayes soon finds that today's racing is fraught with betrayal, nasty media, corrupt F1 officials and that's before he gets in the missile with tires going 200+ mph. This week on Totally 80s and 90s Recall, Dave, Rob, and Kurt are firing up the engines and diving into Days of Thunder (1990), the slick, high-speed NASCAR drama that brought Top Gun-style adrenaline to the racetrack. Directed by Tony Scott and produced by the powerhouse duo of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film stars Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, a fearless but raw driver trying to prove himself on the NASCAR circuit. Backed by veteran crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall) and team owner Tim Daland (Randy Quaid), Cole navigates the fierce world of stock car racing, intense rivalries, and a life-changing crash that forces him to confront his own limitations. Nicole Kidman also makes her debut as Dr. Claire Lewicki, a neurosurgeon who becomes both Cole's caretaker and love interest. In their breakdown of the film, the guys rev up the nostalgia by exploring the movie's iconic race scenes, killer Hans Zimmer score, and the romance that sparked between Cruise and Kidman's characters. With plenty of behind-the-scenes trivia, quotable lines ("Rubbin', son, is racin'"), and some good old-fashioned '90s movie magic, Dave, Rob, and Kurt put the pedal to the metal in revisiting this cult favorite. When director Joe Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer set out to make “F1,” their goal was to create the most authentic Formula One film ever made. Recorded in person at Skywalker Sound, this episode features the sound team behind the film, who share how they brought that vision to life. They discuss the extraordinary lengths they went to in order to craft a visceral, true-to-life experience for racing fans and everyday viewers alike — while also highlighting the invaluable support they received from the production and the film's director, Joe Kosinski.“I would say Joe is the grand master at giving us these opportunities [to succeed]. God bless him, because he gets it. He knows you can't just say, ‘I want this to be an authentic Formula One movie — figure it out.' He was like, ‘We're going to start early. We're going to give you whatever resources you need. And everything is going to be 100% perfect.' And he's not like, ‘This has to be perfect.' It's just, ‘We're going to do this together. What do you need? I'm going to help you. Let's get going.'”—Al Nelson, Supervising Sound Editor, “F1”Joining today's conversation: - Al Nelson – Supervising sound editor/sound designer - Juan Peralta – Re-recording mixer - Gary Rizzo – Re-recording mixer - Gwendolyn Yates Whittle – Supervising sound editorBe sure to check out “F1,” now in theaters and Dolby Cinemas®, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode on YouTube.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com.

Jerry Bruckheimer is the Hollywood producer behind some of the biggest blockbusters of all time, including “Top Gun,” “Armageddon” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Now, he's back with “F1,” which stars Brad Pitt as an aging Formula One driver who's ready to make a comeback 30 years after an accident derailed his career. Jerry joins guest host Talia Schlanger to talk about some of the incredible feats he's pulled off as a producer, and how he drew on everything he knows about making action-packed movies to create this new film.

One of the biggest films of the summer - Joseph Kosinski's F1 - has now arrived on the biggest screen near you! This is the latest collaboration between Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer, who last produced Top Gun: Maverick together. This has been one of my most anticipated movies for YEARS now, because Top Gun: Maverick is easily my favorite movie of the decade so far, making it therefore the best new release I've covered. I've also been a casual fan of Kosinski's previous work, the strongest film of his being Only the Brave prior to Maverick. But, the idea of him doing a race car movie with another one of the biggest stars on the planet - now Academy Award winner Brad Pitt - was so exciting. Is F1 (The Movie) the best movie of summer 2025 so far? Let's talk about it!F1 The Movie:Directed by: Joseph KosinskiStory by: Joseph Kosinski, Ehren KrugerScreenplay by: Ehren KrugerProduced by: Jerry Bruckheimer, Dede Gardner, Lewis Hamilton, Jeremy Kleiner, Joseph Kosinski, Chad Oman, Brad PittExecutive Producers: Toby Hefferman, Daniel Lupi, Penni ThowOriginal score by: Hans ZimmerCinematography by: Claudio MirandaEdited by: Stephen MirrioneCasting by: Lucy Bevan, Emily BrockmannProduction Design by: Ben Munro, Mark TildesleyCostume Design by: Julian DayCast: Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Kim Bodnia, Tobias Menzies, Shea Whigham, Sarah NilesSynopsis: Racing legend Sonny Hayes is coaxed out of retirement to lead a struggling Formula 1 team—and mentor a young hotshot driver—while chasing one more chance at glory.
The legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer (The Rock, Top Gun) and ace director (and returning guest) Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun Maverick) join Stephen Follows to talk their latest movie F1. From launching careers and creating timeless hits like "Flashdance" and the original "Beverly Hills Cop" – and its recent hit sequel, "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" – to the iconic dogfights in "Top Gun" – and let's not forget the absolute juggernaut that was "Top Gun: Maverick" – Jerry Bruckheimer knows how to make movies that hit hard and stay with you! With a career that spans over five decades and an eye-watering $16 billion at the worldwide box office, Jerry is not just a producer; he's practically a cinematic institution. His projects are all about that sleek style, that relentless energy, and that incredible knack for knowing exactly what audiences want. He's the force behind countless films and shows that have shaped modern cinema, a true visionary who understands how to deliver pure, unadulterated entertainment. And joining Jerry today, we have the visionary director who, in my humble opinion, is one of the most exciting filmmakers working right now! This is Joseph Kosinksi a director who's consistently pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling, known for his meticulous design, breathtaking practical effects blended seamlessly with cutting-edge CGI, and an incredible knack for capturing speed and intensity on screen like no other in "TRON: Legacy" , the sci-fi mystery of "Oblivion" and "Only the Brave" And of course, he absolutely blew us away with "Top Gun: Maverick".More recently, he directed the compelling Netflix sci-fi thriller "Spiderhead." Now, he's once again teaming up with Jerry Bruckheimer to bring us back to the racetrack for what promises to be one of the most immersive racing films ever made: "F1." This highly anticipated movie, which he directed, was written by Ehren Kruger from a story by himself and Kruger. The legendary Claudio Miranda, also from "Top Gun: Maverick," Huge thanks to Stephen Followers for hosting. Check out StephenFollows.com And GO GO GO watch F1 in cinemas NOW! Hope Hopkinson talks to director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer about their new film, F1: The Movie. Dubbed 'the greatest that never was', Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1's most promising racer of the 1990s – until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to Formula 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie, intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he finds that in Formula 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone. Shot during actual Grand Prix weekends as the team competes against the titans of the sport, Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski brings the same death-defying, edge-of-the-seat thrills to the world of racing in F1: The Movie. Marvel gaat verder met Spider-Man '94Spider-Man: The Animated Series krijgt eindelijk een vervolg!

Finally.. it's F1 movie launch season. But is the film, dubbed by one critic “Barbie for men” any good? Our correspondents were given a preview showing in Montreal and give their verdict. We hear from the producer Jerry Bruckheimer and one of the stars, Kerry Condon. Plus we examine the fallout from the Canadian Grand Prix - for the second consecutive race we saw a collision in the closing stages. This time Lando Norris hit his team mate Oscar Piastri, but the dent was in Lando's championship challenge. We look at the external and internal pressure mounting on Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur and discuss echoes from the past when Jean Todt was under pressure and Michael Schumacher protected him. As Renault's CEO abruptly departs, what next for Alpine F1 as they sink to 10th in the Constructors' Championship while doing an exec search for their fourth team principal in two years? Fernando Alonso gave Aston Martin a season best result in Montreal on their 100th Grand Prix, but is Lance Stroll's form a concern? And should Montreal race winner George Russell take matters into his own hands and force a move to Aston? We're diving headfirst into high-flying mayhem with Con Air, a chaotic symphony of explosions, one-liners, and mid-air madness—handpicked by our awesome Patreon supporter Susan from the Geek Girl Soup podcast!Con Air (1997) was born out of the mid-90s action movie boom, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer riding high from previous hits like The Rock and Crimson Tide. Wanting to blend testosterone-fueled chaos with a high-concept premise, Bruckheimer and the team crafted a story about a maximum-security prisoner transport gone wildly off the rails. The script, written by Scott Rosenberg, was inspired in part by a real federal program, but the film quickly ditched realism in favor of bombast and explosions. Simon West, a former music video director making his feature debut, was brought on to direct, bringing a flashy style that matched Bruckheimer's over-the-top vision. The production faced major challenges, especially with the practical effects and large set pieces involving planes, crashes, and convicts with very short fuses. Shot primarily in Utah and Nevada, including sequences at the infamous "Boneyard" in the Mojave Desert, the film used a combination of real aircraft, full-scale models, and miniature effects. Despite the logistical headaches, Con Air brought together a ludicrously stacked cast including Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, and Ving Rhames. Cage famously trained with DEA agents and adopted a Southern accent for his role — choices that added to the movie's now-iconic (and deeply memeable) legacy. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where justice is served on wings of chaos, Con Air follows newly paroled Army Ranger Cameron Poe, who just wants to get home to his wife and daughter—but finds himself trapped on a high-security prisoner transport flight hijacked by some of the most dangerous criminals in America. With time running out and a plane full of maniacs soaring toward disaster, Poe must fight from the inside to stop the carnage, clear his name, and maybe deliver a heartfelt bunny rabbit along the way. Buckle up—this flight's going down in action-packed, slow-mo glory.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Lee and Daniel decided to go deep (well, as deep as a Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production can get), both literally and figuratively, as they tackle the epic shouty men on a submarine film, "Crimson Tide" (1995), directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as said shouty men. A musical with sweary puppets might be one of the biggest movie miracles of all time.Team America: World Police started out as an homage to Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds mixed with Jerry Bruckheimer all-action, post 9/11 US foreign policy and a hint of disaster movies. It's likely that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone simply had no idea what they were in for when they agreed to make this movie and release it in October 2004.They had five months(!)Five months to make a fully practical movie starring marionettes, with scale sets and explosions and montages and sex! With zero CGI. Did they do it? Bleep yeah. This episode explains how, and why we should be retrospectively praising this movie for more than its satire. This episode was originally released on 16th June 2022Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. Chris does love a good car movie, though whether this one hits that description is up for debate. This week's movie is Gone in Sixty Seconds from the year 2000.Gone in Sixty Seconds was a high-octane production that aimed to modernize the 1974 cult classic while capitalizing on Hollywood's growing appetite for stylish car heist films. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film assembled a star-studded cast led by Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duvall, with Dominic Sena directing. Unlike the original's more guerilla-style filmmaking, the remake had the full backing of a major studio, leading to a more polished but equally adrenaline-fueled experience. Cage, ever the committed performer, insisted on doing many of his own driving stunts, and the production featured over 50 high-end vehicles, including the now-iconic Shelby GT500 “Eleanor.” The film's vehicular action sequences were a mix of practical stunts and CGI enhancements, though efforts were made to keep the high-speed chases feeling raw and authentic.Filming took place primarily in Los Angeles, with key sequences shot in Long Beach, including the climactic jump scene. The production team worked closely with car manufacturers and stunt coordinators to ensure the film delivered on its promise of thrilling, realistic chase scenes. However, some logistical challenges arose, including securing permits for large-scale stunts in heavily trafficked urban areas. The film's heavy use of practical effects and real car chases set it apart from other CGI-laden action films of the era, maintaining a grounded feel. While Gone in Sixty Seconds received mixed reviews from critics, who found the plot formulaic, audiences embraced its stylish action and high-energy spectacle, propelling it to a solid box office performance and cementing its place as a staple of early 2000s action cinema. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where time is running out and the stakes have never been higher, one man must do the impossible. Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, graphic novelist and screenwriter. While a student at Yale University he designed and programmed the martial arts game Karateka. To create the animations in the game he pioneered a rotoscoping process to capture Super 8 film footage of his friends and family members. My guest further developed this technique for his next game. Prince of Persia became a best-seller, then a series, then, in 2010, a film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, and Ben Kingsley, for which my guest also wrote the screenplay. In 2017, he moved to Montpellier, France where he has authored several graphic novels, including, most recently, an autobiographical work titled, Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family. Send us a textNothing like starting your week with a call back to the 2004 Jerry Bruckheimer production, National Treasure. Now, we know things might feel a little... untethered, politically, at the moment, but we're here to remind you of a time where maybe living in America felt different? A time where Urban Outfitters had 4 foot tall dressing rooms, where a 7 foot tall man could easily take the Declaration of Independence, where Justin Bartha was getting work. You know, before Ned Stark (Sean Bean) but after Paul Serone (Jon Voight). If this movie feels nostalgic and fun but you haven't watched it since the 2000's, we recommend you do not rewatch it unless you actually are a Free Mason.
