Lee and Daniel decided to go deep (well, as deep as a Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production can get), both literally and figuratively, as they tackle the epic shouty men on a submarine film, "Crimson Tide" (1995), directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as said shouty men. Has the threat of nuclear war ever been more dumb and full of cum? Was Tarantino punching this stuff up needed? The hosts also cover what they've watched as of late. A musical with sweary puppets might be one of the biggest movie miracles of all time.Team America: World Police started out as an homage to Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds mixed with Jerry Bruckheimer all-action, post 9/11 US foreign policy and a hint of disaster movies. It's likely that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone simply had no idea what they were in for when they agreed to make this movie and release it in October 2004.They had five months(!)Five months to make a fully practical movie starring marionettes, with scale sets and explosions and montages and sex! With zero CGI. Did they do it? Bleep yeah. This episode explains how, and why we should be retrospectively praising this movie for more than its satire. This episode was originally released on 16th June 2022Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. Chris does love a good car movie, though whether this one hits that description is up for debate. This week's movie is Gone in Sixty Seconds from the year 2000.Gone in Sixty Seconds was a high-octane production that aimed to modernize the 1974 cult classic while capitalizing on Hollywood's growing appetite for stylish car heist films. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film assembled a star-studded cast led by Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duvall, with Dominic Sena directing. Unlike the original's more guerilla-style filmmaking, the remake had the full backing of a major studio, leading to a more polished but equally adrenaline-fueled experience. Cage, ever the committed performer, insisted on doing many of his own driving stunts, and the production featured over 50 high-end vehicles, including the now-iconic Shelby GT500 “Eleanor.” The film's vehicular action sequences were a mix of practical stunts and CGI enhancements, though efforts were made to keep the high-speed chases feeling raw and authentic.Filming took place primarily in Los Angeles, with key sequences shot in Long Beach, including the climactic jump scene. The production team worked closely with car manufacturers and stunt coordinators to ensure the film delivered on its promise of thrilling, realistic chase scenes. However, some logistical challenges arose, including securing permits for large-scale stunts in heavily trafficked urban areas. The film's heavy use of practical effects and real car chases set it apart from other CGI-laden action films of the era, maintaining a grounded feel. While Gone in Sixty Seconds received mixed reviews from critics, who found the plot formulaic, audiences embraced its stylish action and high-energy spectacle, propelling it to a solid box office performance and cementing its place as a staple of early 2000s action cinema. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where time is running out and the stakes have never been higher, one man must do the impossible. Nicolas Cage is Memphis Raines, a legendary car thief dragged back into the game for one last job. With his brother's life on the line and a ruthless crime boss breathing down his neck, he has just 72 hours to steal 50 exotic cars—or face the ultimate price. But standing in his way is a relentless detective, a crew of misfit wheelmen, and the one car that has always eluded him: the infamous Eleanor. High-speed chases, impossible escapes, and engines roaring, Gone in Sixty Seconds proves that fast is never fast enough.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Podcast producers Vic Turnbull and Charles Commins return to Flixwatcher to review Vic's choice Bad Boys II. Bad Boys II (2003) is the second film in the Bad Boys franchise, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Theresa Randle, and Joe Pantoliano all reprise their roles from the previous film, Bad Boys (1995). Detective Lieutenant Michael Eugene 'Mike' Lowrey (Smith) and Detective Lieutenant Marcus Miles Burnett (Lawrence) are back in Miami. This time investigating the ecstasy drug trade. A bust during a Klan meeting leads to Mike accidentally shooting Marcus in the ass. The trail leads them to drug lord Hector Juan Carlos "Johnny" Tapia. In pursuit of him Bayhem ensues with car chases, shoot outs and mortuary raids. Recommendability scores for Bad Boys II were mixed, its mix of violence and comedy makes it a niche audience and some of humour hasn't aged well. With a runtime of 2 hours and 36 mins scores for repeat viewing were low to give an overall rating of 3.01. Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, graphic novelist and screenwriter. While a student at Yale University he designed and programmed the martial arts game Karateka. To create the animations in the game he pioneered a rotoscoping process to capture Super 8 film footage of his friends and family members. My guest further developed this technique for his next game. Prince of Persia became a best-seller, then a series, then, in 2010, a film  produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, and Ben Kingsley, for which my guest also wrote the screenplay. In 2017, he moved to Montpellier, France where he has authored several graphic novels, including, most recently, an autobiographical work titled, Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family. Now, we know things might feel a little... untethered, politically, at the moment, but we're here to remind you of a time where maybe living in America felt different? A time where Urban Outfitters had 4 foot tall dressing rooms, where a 7 foot tall man could easily take the Declaration of Independence, where Justin Bartha was getting work. You know, before Ned Stark (Sean Bean) but after Paul Serone (Jon Voight). If this movie feels nostalgic and fun but you haven't watched it since the 2000's, we recommend you do not rewatch it unless you actually are a Free Mason. Have a great week ahead and don't forget to sign up for Patreon for another episode coming Wednesday!Support the showVisit MummyDearestPodcast.com for merch and more!Follow the podcast on Instagram!Follow Sloane on Instagram!Follow Zach on Instagram! And most importantly, become a Patron and unlock hundreds of bonus episodes!

Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

When we look back at late-90s cinema, few films hit the nerve of an era quite like Enemy of the State (1998). Directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film was released when the internet was still in its infancy, and the public's understanding of digital surveillance was minimal at best. Fast-forward to today and Enemy of the State feels less like a cautionary tale and more like a prediction of the modern world.Starring Will Smith in one of his first dramatic leading roles and featuring a powerhouse cast that includes Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, and Lisa Bonet, Enemy of the State blends action, espionage, and paranoia in a way that makes it both thrilling and eerily relevant. The movie's central theme—how the government can use technology to monitor citizens—is more pertinent now than in 1998. But beyond the social commentary, Enemy of the State is a tightly wound conspiracy thriller that still manages to entertain on its most basic level: sheer adrenaline.A Case of Wrong Place, Wrong TimeThe film kicks off with the murder of a U.S. Congressman by a high-ranking NSA official, played with chilling authority by Jon Voight. This event sets the stage for the film's exploration of the dark side of government surveillance. The plot follows Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a successful labour lawyer, who unwittingly becomes entangled in this conspiracy when an old acquaintance slips him a videotape containing evidence of the congressman's murder.Dean, who has no idea that he has this tape, quickly finds himself the target of the NSA's surveillance and an orchestrated takedown. His life is turned upside down as his bank accounts are frozen, his credit cards are cancelled, and an omniscient digital eye monitors his every move. The tension only builds as Dean is forced to team up with a former NSA operative, Brill (Gene Hackman), who helps him understand the depth of the conspiracy he's caught up in.Surveillance and Paranoia in the Digital AgeEnemy of the State stands out because it effectively tackles the theme of surveillance in the digital age. Released during a time when most of us still viewed the internet as little more than a novelty, the film was ahead of its time in predicting just how pervasive technology would become in our everyday lives. From satellite tracking to phone tapping, Scott's direction makes it clear that there's nowhere to hide in this tech-driven world. At the heart of the film is a fear that resonates with many today: the loss of privacy. The movie asks a question that feels more urgent in the 2020s than in the 1990s—how much power should governments have to monitor their citizens in the name of security? While Enemy of the State doesn't provide any clear answers, it succeeds in making us feel uneasy, particularly as the line between safety and invasion of privacy blurs. In hindsight, the film's plot is almost prophetic. In an era post-Snowden, with revelations of mass government surveillance by agencies like the NSA, Enemy of the State seems less far-fetched and more like a stark reality. This prescience is one of the reasons the film holds up so well over two decades later. Will Smith: A Star in the MakingAt the time of its release, Enemy of the State was a significant departure for Will Smith, who was best known for his comedic roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and blockbuster action flicks like Independence Day. As Robert Clayton Dean, Smith delivers a more nuanced and serious performance, proving that he can handle roles that require more than just one-liners and charm. His portrayal of an everyman caught in a nightmare scenario is both believable and sympathetic, grounding the film's high-concept premise in a relatable human experience.Smith's chemistry with Gene Hackman is another highlight. Hackman, who plays the paranoid, world-weary former NSA agent, brings gravitas to every scene he's in, making Brill a character that feels like he could have walked right out of another conspiracy thriller—The Conversation (1974), for instance, which Hackman also starred in. Their dynamic, a blend of mentor and reluctant ally, adds a layer of emotional depth to the film, giving it more weight than your average action thriller.Tony Scott's Signature Style: Tension on OverdriveTony Scott, known for his kinetic and visually dynamic style, brings his A-game to Enemy of the State. The film is packed with fast-paced action sequences and explosive set pieces that we've come to expect from Scott, but what sets it apart from other late-90s thrillers is how well it builds and sustains tension. The chase sequences, for example, are relentless, and Scott uses surveillance tools—cameras, monitors, satellites—to create a sense of claustrophobia. The viewer is constantly reminded that Dean is being watched, tracked, and hunted. Even in scenes where nothing overtly dangerous is happening, the ever-present hum of technology keeps the tension alive. It's a film that rarely lets the audience catch its breath, and that's exactly what makes it so engaging.A Time Capsule That Still MattersAlthough Enemy of the State is a product of the late 90s, its themes and messages have become more relevant with time. The film tapped into a growing anxiety about the role of technology in our lives, and in the years since its release, that anxiety has only intensified. The explosion of the internet, the rise of social media, and the ongoing debate about privacy vs. security make Enemy of the State feel more like a cultural artifact that predicted our current reality. The film also helped shape how Hollywood would approach tech-based thrillers in the future. Movies like The Bourne Identity, Eagle Eye, and even The Dark Knight owe a debt to the groundwork laid by Enemy of the State, particularly in how they depict technology as both a tool and a weapon. Why It Still MattersAt its core, Enemy of the State (1998) is a pulse-pounding thriller that expertly combines action with a timely and prescient commentary on technology and government power. It's a movie that's fun to watch and forces you to think about the world we live in today. With strong performances from Will Smith and Gene Hackman, and Tony Scott's tense, no-holds-barred direction, Enemy of the State remains a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good thriller with something important to say.For fans of the Born to Watch podcast, revisiting this film will be both a nostalgic trip back to the late 90s and a stark reminder of how far and little things have changed since then. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

It's Die Hard on a prison plane!(you can watch this week's episode on YouTube!)This week, Phil ‘Philly Bedlam' Gawthorne and Liam ‘The Coliseum' Billingham take a high-security flight on CON AIR with special guest Scout Tafoya, aka ‘The Massachusetts Mangler'!After serving a long and harsh sentence for a self-defense killing, parolee and ex-Army Ranger Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) travels on a prisoner transport plane nicknamed ‘Con Air', to meet with his wife and daughter. But when said plane is taken over by vicious criminal mastermind Cyrus ‘The Virus' Grissom (John Malkovich) and his bloodthirsty cohorts, Poe finds himself unable to abandon his friend Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) and vulnerable female Prison Guard Sally Bishop (Rachel Ticotin), and decides to fight back against the vicious convicts, with the help of unconventional US Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack), who assists his efforts from the ground. As CON AIR is one of the best and most iconic ‘DIE HARD ON A [BLANK]' films ever made, this is one of our biggest, and most substantive, episodes yet. The guys start out by discussing the origins of these kind of cinematic stories, going all the way back to movies such as STAGECOACH, before digging in on the film's plentiful ‘Die Hard DNA'. They go deep on the film's themes, meanings, and aspirations, and discuss how its politics and portrayals have aged, for better or worse, in the intervening decades since its summer 1997 release. They talk in detail about the three principle stars – Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich – as well as the rest of the stellar supporting cast, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Simon West, and writer Scott Rosenberg. Events culminate with a highly contested edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a criminally tough ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! In addition to that film, he has appeared alongside Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks in multiple films. Those performances are part of his frequent collaborations with such Academy Award winning filmmakers as Robert Zemeckis and Ron Howard (Forrest Gump, Contact, Cast Away, Appollo 13, EDtv,  and Frost/Nixon.) His most critically acclaimed performance was that of the preppy pipe-smoking astrophysicist 'Fisher', the right-hand man, in the Sci-Fi classic Contact opposite Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. Blake has well over 100 credits to his name in both television and film. In the 1980's and early 1990's, he frequently collaborated with friend and colleague, Emilio Estevez. The two met on the generation defining film Young Guns where he portrayed 'McCloskey', the Young Gun snitch, opposite Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Dermot Mulroney. He would go on to make four more films with Estevez as both an actor and director (Men at Work, Rated X, The War at Home, Nightbreaker). He also worked with other luminary filmmakers such as Ridley & Tony Scott (The Man in the High Castle, Enemy of the State), Paul Mazursky (The Pickle), Frank Darabont (Mob City), Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog), Roland Joffe (Texas Rising) and numerous others. In addition, he has appeared in a multitude of Emmy Award winning series, mini-series, and movies for television with prolific content providers such as Steven Bochco, David Milch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Shonda Rhimes, David Shore, Paul Attanosio, Don Bellisario, and Dick Wolf, repeatedly reaching out to Blake to be on their shows.

Scoring some of the highest test scores in the studio's history, the inspirational true story of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle is backed by a rousing, gorgeous score by English composer Amelia Warner. The peek at September's MCU show highlights Kathryn Hahn's return to the character Agatha Harkness, first introduced in WandaVision. We see Harkness awakening from Wanda Maximoff's spell and setting out to regain her power. While one of Matt Reeves' Elseworlds projects is moving forward, one is taking a step back. Reeves announced a Gotham police show in 2020, then it changed to focus on Arkham Asylum and has been through several directors and showrunners since. Winderbaum Is “most excited” for people to see what they're doing with Marvel Zombies. Revenge is a dish best served hot and sweaty in the first trailer for Gladiator II.
