Optimus!! Listen up as Will's pick for the week has the podcast duo examining all things BAYHEM with the ludicrous absurdity of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Shia LaBeouf? Megatron? The Pyramids? John Turturro? Words?!?! All becomes meaningless as we finally talk about the cinema of Michael Bay.

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay have a bad day turn to worse, and worse, and worse while discussing the criminally underrated actioner, 'Ambulance.' Bombay kicks off the episode by telling a story about meeting an excited Michael Bay at a party, and how his real-life enthusiasm bleeds through to his work. Then the boys dive in on one of the best films of the decade, an action movie that bares all the tension-building tropes of a classic thriller. They discuss how impressive it was to see Bay return to his roots and pull off incredible stunts with practical FX, and all on a relatively modest $40 million budget. For the film, the seasoned director brought his favorite co-star which was hundreds of drones. This technology appeared to allow Bay to fully achieve his vision of Bayhem. The movie's pacing is dialed up to an 11, and Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a wonderfully gonzo performance that is also cranked up. Eiza Gonzalez is given one of her meatier roles to date, and manages to go toe-to-toe with Gyllenhaal — whose run before this movie was one of the greatest ever seen by a modern actor. Besides the propulsive action all the trademark Bay touches are there including overstuffed amount of characters, and juvenile humor, but it all adds to the charm of this comparatively stripped-down installment in the Bay oeuvre.  

Ahead of Edinburgh International Film Festival kicking off on 13 August, Ellie, Peter, Jamie and Anahit have got together to take a deep dive into three interesting-looking titles in the programme. First they take a trip back to 19th-century Edinburgh for The Education of Jane Cumming, a true-life story that inspired the classic 60s queer drama The Children's Hour. It's then off to France for Goodbye Cruel World, a beautifully shot film that begins as a story of teen bullying and depression before morphing into a dreamy coming-of-age romance. [School of Movies 2026] This is a fun one. Statistically speaking if you're under the age of 45 you didn't go and see this summer blockbuster funded by Amazon. When you think about it, this probably should have been made in the late 2000s, just after Michael Bay's immensely successful Transformers, and notably around the time they started planning the movie anyway. Instead it has taken another twenty years to hit the big screen and now faces relevance to only late Gen Xers like Sharon and I. The film, directed by Bumblebee and Kubo second-stringer Travis Knight is an enjoyable MESS! It does have heart, and an adorable softboy lead who seems to have understood the assignment. It's a higgledy-piggledy remix of all four Thor movies, with traces of sixteen unfinished scripts floating around, and yet somehow Jared Leto manages to be entertaining for once in his life. Sharon is our audience surrogate as I take you all by the hand and lead you through Eternia. This is one to listen to, even (especially) if you haven't seen it. It's as if 007 went to prison for decades, was let out by government guys played by John Spencer & William Forsythe and then he had to help a nerdy Nicolas Cage save hostages on a deserted island. Well, hold up, that IS the plot of The Rock! Michael Bay's action movie is deeper than you might expect, with Ed Harris playing a superstar Marine general who becomes a terrorist…with sympathetic complexity. Cage is the out-of-his-element expert on chemical weapons who teams with Sean Connery's Bond-like ex-spy who once escaped from Alcatraz. The flick is a Bay/Bruckheimer/Simpson collab so it's gaudy, loud, tart-tongued and very exciting. Those 2 Mexican stand-offs are phenomenal scenes. There's death and destruction in The Rock, sure, yet it's just fun. So, yesh, cut Agent Goodspeed some slack as he battles the guy threatening to launch deadly gas while mourning his men (and "his wife") in this 744th episode. Well, Actually: Mason uses SF Information to find his daughter...he doesn't just magically remember a phone number he never had. Also, the funny line about bailing on lemons is in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, not I Love You, Man. Also also, it DOES seem like Tony Todd's character knocks over a rock on purpose to start a massacre in the shower scene...and also at least SOME of Hummel's marines are killed when that "all enemies…foreign, sir, and domestic" melee is over.
