Once upon a time, there was an indie wrestling company in Texas called WrestleCircus. It had a circus theme with appropriately named events and championships. It also booked a whole lot of prominent indie names who would later become regulars in AEW and WWE. But like many indie companies, it went the way of the dodo. Returning guest Erin Quinn went to several WrestleCircus shows back in the day, making her the ideal guest for this episode. Andrew and Erin go under the big top and play songs that have animals in the title. Artists played include Jethro Tull, Namoli Brennet, Lou Reed, The HU, Was (Not Was), Matthew Sweet, Kate Bush, Geggy Tah, and more. No animals were harmed in the making of this episode (just the host's patience when listening to that Lou Reed song).Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerTwitter: @MsErinQuinnBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @erinquinnAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

From an impoverished neighbourhood in South London, Charlie Chaplin became one of the most significant figures in the development of cinema. More recently, TV writers like Sophie Willan and Michaela Coel have transformed the way working class lives are depicted on TV, from the concerned paternalism of the 1960s to a more celebratory view from the inside in the 2020s. In this week's edition of Radio 4's arts and ideas discussion programme, Matthew Sweet charts these changes, and considers what they mean for our understanding of class categories in wider society. With TV historian Laura Minor, art historian Jacqueline Riding, novelist Adelle Stripe, and historian Samuel Johnson-Schlee. Plus, an interview with Ian La Frenais, co-creator of such comedy classics as The Likely Lads and Porridge. The paperback of Adelle Stripe's memoir Base Notes, and Jacqueline Riding's book Hard Street: Working Class Lives in Charlie Chaplin's London, are both published in February. Producer: Luke Mulhall

Plato tried to demonstrate that might does not make right, and thinkers ever since, from Hobbes and Rousseau to Kant and Carl Schmitt, have placed the idea that might is right at the centre of their political philosophies, for better or worse. Matthew Sweet traces the intellectual history of the idea, with Angie Hobbs, Margaret MacMillan, Lea Ypi, and Hugo Drochon. Oakland power pop band The Goods return with Don't Spoil the Fun, their first full-length album, arriving October 24th, 2025 via Dandy Boy Records. Written and produced by frontman Rob Good (Ryli) in his Oakland studio, the record captures the band's signature mix of jangling guitars, big melodic hooks, and heartfelt songwriting. Joined by bassist Cherron Arens and guitarist Gabriel Monnot, Good channels the classic shimmer of The Byrds and Big Star with the energy of Teenage Fanclub and Matthew Sweet – crafting songs that feel both familiar and fresh. The album's focus track and accompanying video, “Sunday Morning Out of the Blue,” also arrives October 24. It's about the push and pull of trying to make a relationship work – the kind of argument that leaves you both worn out and closer at the same time. Built around bright guitars and melodic basslines, the song captures that uneasy calm after a fight, when things finally start to make sense again. Across its eleven tracks, Don't Spoil the Fun explores the search for love, connection, and meaning with warmth and empathy. “These songs were written over the last five years – some of them even pre-date our first EP,” says Good. “We recorded several versions before finally landing on something that felt right. This album is us leveling up our sound and finding our own style.” From the chiming immediacy of lead single “April Fools” to the wistful reflection of “Remember,” the album moves fluidly between exuberant and introspective moods. “Photograph” memorializes a lost Oakland venue, The Golden Bull, where The Goods played their first show, while “Aurora” celebrates staying rooted instead of chasing dreams elsewhere. “Me and My Ghost” turns a song written for a friend into a self-reflection on solitude, and “Keep It Safe” closes the album with a gentle reminder to protect one's mental health amid chaos. With their blend of bright guitars, fuzz-drenched hooks, and honest storytelling, The Goods craft a record that balances classic influences with a distinctly modern heart. Rocks have shaped the fates of civilizations and the study of geology has transformed our intellectual landscape. In the 19th century developments in earth sciences led to the scientific rejection of Biblical timescales in favour of the far greater spans of geological time, which opened the way for Darwin's development of the theory of evolution by natural selection. More recently, historians have been keen to incorporate factors like access to natural resources and major events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions into their accounts of the past and analyses of the present. Matthew Sweet asks how disciplines in the humanities, like history and political theory, might be transformed by incorporating insights and data from the earth sciences, and also how the earth sciences might be transformed if they become more historically and culturally aware. It's been a bumpy road for Pete Droge the last few years and the acclaimed singer-songwriter knew exactly what to do about it. First off, after years of not feeling right, Pete was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome about ten years ago. This changed how he would have to approach his career which, as an independent artist, was already a full time job. Then, he decided the time was right to find his birth mother who, it turns out, passed away just months before he found her. These themes permeate his latest (and best) album, Fade Away Blue. Pete lays out the challenges of the last few years, how he kept afloat, and what to expect from here. We also get the scoop on his sadly short-lived supergroup the Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins. He's a wonderful guy and hugely inspiring. Mike Delevante recently released his debut album, September Days, on Truly Handmade Records, a label founded by Guy Clark LLC's board of directors (including Grammy-winning author, producer, and filmmaker Tamara Saviano, who fell in love with the album at first listen). Not many artists release their first solo record two decades after their debut album but that's the case for Delevante, who spent the 1990s recording and touring as half of trailblazing Americana duo the Delevantes with his older brother Bob. The duo's acclaimed releases on Rounder and Capitol records in that era made a splash — Long About That Time (Rounder) was the first #1 debut album on Gavin's newly created Americana radio chart —and found them touring with like-minded artists including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Levon Helm and others. So, while it's hardly the first musical endeavor for Delevante, September Days is an important step for a musician who'd never put the spotlight directly on himself, until now. Produced by Joe Pisapia, whose production credits include work with Ben Folds, Guster, k.d. lang and many others, the album's shimmering guitars and instantly memorable melodies recall some of the 90's best guitar pop artists (Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and more).  That decision was a long time coming. The Delevante brothers were New Jersey natives who've made Nashville their home since the ‘90s, along with frequent collaborator and co-producer, Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. Mike had shifted gears, focusing on visual arts. Both he and his brother had studied art in college, with Bob also turning more toward visual projects in the 2000s, but Bob had also made three solo records along the way. It was Tallent who got the brothers back into music. He'd enlisted them to sing on his 2019 solo album More Like Me, then invited them to be part of a live show he was doing in Asbury Park with Southside Johnny and special guest Bruce Springsteen. They had such a blast that “I felt myself getting pulled back into it,” Mike says. The result was 2021's A Thousand Turns. Its instantly appealing melodies and trademark sibling harmonies were a welcome return to form for the duo, whose mix of country and rock flowed naturally from brothers who came of age in New Jersey before moving to Nashville.https://www.instagram.com/michaeldelevante/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/mike.delevante/https://mikedelevante.bandcamp.com/album/september-days"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

So today's episode is both a bittersweet tribute to his career and a joyous celebration of his music, which is exactly the emotional tightrope that his 1991 cult classic Girlfriend walks from start to finish. Sweet recorded this album during the interim between going through a painful divorce and meeting his now-wife, and while his lyrics aren't strictly autobiographical, the album's 15 songs run the gamut from desperate yearning (“Don't Go,” “You Don't Love Me”) to pure ebullience (“I've Been Waiting,” “Girlfriend”). And it's all topped off with crisp, direct production that evoked Crazy Horse and the Beatles' Revolver during a period when many rock albums were soaked in reverb and drained of personality.
