We're talking to author Conley Owens about his book The Dorean Principle and how we fund ministry in modern evangelicalism.
In this episode with Conley Owens, we discuss his book on the Dorean Principle. The Dorean Principle, which is based on biblical concepts related to generosity and giving, takes aim at the commercialization of Christianity in the church today. We discuss the disruptive nature of such a principle as it pertains to conferences, seminaries, weddings, and para-church ministries. Owens even goes so far as to criticize the host's Patreon tiers based on the Dorean Principle! He is the husband of one wife and the father of eight children. He enjoys cooperative games, couch surfing, casual skateboarding, and other peculiar activities. He has been a member of SVRBC since 2010, and a pastor since 2019.Conley was saved at an early age when he learned that blaming others for his sins didn't actually fix anything. Instead, he trusted in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and found true forgiveness. He discovered Reformed theology in college after accidentally getting involved with a cult and realizing he needed a better grasp on what the Bible teaches to keep such things from happening again.”Support the showSign up for the Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisFollow Full Proof Theology on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fullprooftheology/Follow Full Proof Theology on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/fullprooftheology/
If you're a regular reader of MinistryWatch's daily journalism, or a regular listener to our podcast, you know that we care about integrity. The personal integrity of Christian leaders, and the integrity of the process and procedures of Christian ministries themselves. We advocate for transparency and accountability as a way of giving Christian donors the chance to make giving decisions for themselves. But my guest today, Conley Owens, say that is not enough. He suggests that it's not just the prosperity gospel preachers who have crossed the line when it comes to financial integrity. He makes the case that virtually all evangelical ministries – including MinistryWatch – are engaged in fundraising practices that the Bible prohibits and that Jesus and Paul and early church leaders would have found reprehensible. He's written a book about his ideas. It's called The Dorean Principle: A Biblical Response to the Commercialization of Christianity. He spoke to me from his home office in California. Why is Christianity so commercialized? Conley shares about The Dorean Principle, his new book which explains this biblical concept of the Gospel being "freely given". We talk about being a colaborer vs. a customer, reciprocity vs. gift, Bible translation, Christian music, copyright and creative commons, and how it all relates to an open source ethos. Should Christian products and services be free? What can churches learn from the open source movement? Listen in as Conley Owens, author of The Dorean Principle shares the story behind his book and makes a biblical case for colabor instead of reciprocity in ministry financing. In this episode, Chris and Conley discuss theological challenges with different fundraising models, the ministry problems posed by existing copyright law, the distinction between the sacred and the holy and its interaction with money (cf simony), and ultimately dream of a future where the blessings of the Gospel are exchanged freely instead of for a price. Last episode we introduced the idea of "the dorean principle," which is explained in Conley Owens' free book. We left the interview wondering how this applies to Bible translations and manuscripts, so we're back to finish the conversation and apply Jesus' principle of freely giving to those issues. We'll also discuss how the concept of intellectual property is unbiblical, goes against natural law, and more. Visit https://thedoreanprinciple.org/ Join the facebook group to show your support. As we've discussed multiple times in this podcast, the world of Bible translation is severely hindered by the status quo of locking up biblical resources under a "Copyright, All Rights Reserved" system. The global Church suffers tremendously because of this as well, and they only receive the crumbs that fall off the table of the rich Western Christian publishing industry. There is no longer a distinction between the world and the Church in the practice of monetizing everything–even gospel ministry and the resources needed to make Bible translation truly succeed and be sustainable. So I'm deeply thankful that someone has finally published a book that directly addresses the problem of the commercialization of Christianity. We're going to talk to him over the next two episodes and see what we can learn. Conley Owens is a husband and father of eight children. He is a pastor at Silicon Valley Reformed Baptist Church. He also has a full time job as a software engineer at Google. But Conley is more than just a modern day Batman. He has thought deeply about how modern Christianity has commercialized ministry contrary to the examples and teachings in the Bible. Conley's book The Dorean Principle is an eye-opening look at how Christians should raise funds without turning the gospel into a product and recipients into consumers. The way we publish books, host conferences, and charge speaker fees deserves some fresh criticism! And that is why The Dorean Principle demands the church's consideration. The Dorean Principle // S09E03 Money. Possibly no single thing causes human kind more debate and strife than that of money. And from a Christian standpoint, how should we view money? How should ministries handle money and receive support. Most importantly how can we be in obedience to Him in all of our financial actions?...
We all know that missionary life usually means asking for financial support. That scares many people away. But what if that's the way all sorts of ministries are supposed to work? Ministry should be free! This should not be a controversial statement! And yet, seminary costs tens of thousands, conferences make hundreds of thousands (the larger ones make millions), and Logos charges for public domain books! How should we think about these things?? Billions of dollars change hands in the name of Christ, but is the gospel at stake? Many rightly condemn the wealth amassed by false teachers, but at a fundamental level, little differentiates their practices from those of legitimate ministries. Seminaries, Christian publishers, and other church and parachurch organizations all engage in the commerce of exchanging religious instruction for money. Now, more than ever, the church must turn to the word of God to find wisdom on these matters. The Dorean Principle offers a fresh look at the Bible's guidance on ministry fundraising and exposes common practices that run afoul of its instruction. Conley Owens presents a robust synthesis of Jesus and the apostle Paul's theology, concluding that “ministry should be supported, not sold.” Drawing from his experience as both a pastor and an engineer, he provides practical solutions to the challenges that lie at the intersection of money and ministry.
