It was only a matter of time before the democratization of all things came to evangelicalism. Whether it was Elon Musk buying Twitter, “entrepreneurs” getting rich off meme coins, or AI giving anyone supposed expertise in whatever field they wanted, we are experiencing a technological revolution that is as disruptive as the printing press. Information, platforms, access, and ideas have been thrown wide open to anyone with the shrewdness, tact, and ambition to wield them. I'm not saying this is a bad or a good thing, it's just the way things are moving. No one is taking this harder than the evangelical institutions of the past. Seminaries, Universities, para-church ministries and church networks that were massively influential in the 1990s and early 2000s still have lots of land, money, and reach. But ultimately, despite their millions of dollars and decades long track record, they are rapidly losing influence. Men with no degrees, no pedigree, and minimal funds are capturing the hearts of the next generation of right wing and Christian men because they have what the institutions lack. Courage. The gatekeepers shriek and wail, but they are gatekeepers without a gate. Theological seminaries and Bible institutes find themselves at the crossroads of preserving biblical faithfulness and of maintaining contextual relevance. What does faithful contextual relevance look like? How can theological institutions steer a course that will engage and serve the church through the men and women they equip for ministry and service? In The Fruits of Listening (Wipf and Stock, 2024), Colleen Weaver designed a qualitative research project in the Protestant evangelical community in Madrid, Spain. Intentional listening was conducted on three seminary campuses and in the faith community. Seminary faculty and students and church attenders shared their perspectives, experiences, and hopes for transformative theological education. Congregants envisioned theological education that equips leaders to relationally empower the church to give witness in the society. Faculty and students described the contextual challenges they face as Protestant believers in Spain. They voiced narratives of how they must find ways to persevere amid pervasive scarcity and in a rapidly changing society. Seminaries and churches around the world may recognize details of their own experiences in these stories and, importantly, receive resources for being contextually responsive in their situations. Dave Broucek is a retired cross-cultural missionary/coordinator of continuing education/international ministries director. He interviews authors who provide critical reflection on the theology and practice of Christian mission. Learn more about your ad choices. What if every pastor had access to deep, biblical theological training—no matter where they lived? In this episode, we sit down with John Miller, Vice President and Academic Dean at Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary, whose mission is nothing short of transformational. With a burning passion to equip indigenous pastors, John is spearheading efforts to plant seminaries around the world, ensuring that church leaders in Africa, Asia, and beyond have the theological foundation they need to shepherd their congregations faithfully. John shares his personal journey—how God led him from the classroom to the frontlines of global theological training. He paints a picture of the urgent need for solid biblical education in regions where pastors often lead churches with little to no formal training. We'll hear powerful stories from his work overseas, the challenges of building sustainable seminaries, and why equipping local leaders is the key to lasting gospel impact. What is the “secret sauce” that has caused Dallas Theological Seminary to become the largest non-denominational seminary in the world while other Seminaries are closing their doors, and still others are experiencing significant mission drift? In this episode Dr. Weaver shares an article that he wrote, and was published in Dallas Theological Seminary's 100th anniversary edition of the DTS Voice Magazine. The article is entitled: A Desperate Need, A Great Vision, And An Enduring Seminary.
How do LCMS seminaries have a global impact on confessional Lutheranism? In our special crossover series "From Wittenberg" with The Lutheran Witness Podcast, the Rev. Roy Askins (Executive Editor of The Lutheran Witness) speaks with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Egger (President, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO) and the Rev. Dr. John Bruss (President, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN) to highlight the role of LCMS seminaries in supporting the proclamation of the gospel globally. They discuss how the presence of Jesus Christ is central to the church's mission, how the history of the world is centered in God's plan of redemption, why apologetics should not overshadow the joyful proclamation of the gospel, and the importance of unity among confessional Lutherans globally. Find these seminaries at csl.edu and ctsfw.edu. Learn more about LCMS Church relations at lcms.org/about/leadership/president/church-relations. Find The Lutheran Witness at witness.lcms.org. Before the Reformation, illiteracy was widespread. When the Reformers started to say that people needed to study the word of God for themselves, the importance of learning dramatically increased and people like Luther and Calvin started schools. Pastors were suddenly expected to be knowledgeable. Before this, people could occupy a high level in the church and not really know any doctrine. The Roman Catholic response with the counter Reformation at the council of Trent was to call for seminaries. Over time that became the standard means of education for Protestants as well, but it really is not in the bible, so are seminaries a good idea? In this episode, we want to discuss what caused the seminary model to become dominant, and to take it back to scripture. We also think it's worth pushing on the idol of knowledge for knowledge's sake. While knowledge is not bad, scripture gives the warning that it puffs up. When you combine this danger with the fact that the majority of seminary graduates are effectively novices who have had very little real-world experience or training, it is easy to see why there can be serious problems with the seminary system. One of the metaphors that scripture uses for a church body is that of a family or household of faith, with the leaders being older brothers (elders) and the body itself being composed of brothers and sisters doing the work of their Father in the world and serving one another and the body in general in different capacities. Is it possible that like in earthly families, our heavenly father has made a way for his sons to be trained to lead? Series: Medical “Finding Hope in the Midst of Medical Complexity” with Andrea Bourne Foster Welcome to the podcast. This episode is full of heart and hope. Today we begin our Medical series with author, speaker, educator and advocate Andrea Bourne Foster. Andrea is the mom of 2 beautiful daughters diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis and epilepsy. She is no stranger to hospital stays and ongoing procedures and we are blessed to have this most amazing mom and advocate on with us today. Let's listen in as she shares her families story. Bio: Andrea Foster is a speaker, writer, disability advocate/educator, wife and mom. Andrea has been married to Kirk since 1998 and they are parents to four young adults. Their youngest, Audrey and Annie are identical twins who were diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex at age five months. This resulted in further diagnoses of epilepsy, autism, intellectual disability and other medical complexities. Andrea and Kirk experienced grief at the loss of dreams and face daily challenges as they fulfill the role of parent-caregivers for their twin daughters. They live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada where Kirk is a professional Firefighter and have been part of Bramalea Alliance Church since 2001. Andrea holds a Master of Science in Education (Disability Studies), Bachelor of Theology and Early Childhood Education Diploma. She shares her experiences through speaking and writing. Her articles are published in Testimony Magazine (PAOC), Alliance.ca magazine, ChristianWeek online magazine and in Women Together online magazine. She has also been a guest writer for Key Ministry and guest blogger for the Huffington Post. She has been interviewed on 100 Huntley St., The Drew Marshall Show and by other podcast hosts. Andrea guest lectures at Bible Colleges and Seminaries, and is working to make Disability Studies part of all such curriculums. Andrea longs to help families not only cope, but also thrive and truly know the joy of the Lord, in spite of disability, disappointment and ongoing seasons of trial. She believes all people belong in the Church but understands that not all leaders are well prepared for ministry with people affected by disability. Her passion is to equip everyone for better interaction so the Body of Christ will become a place of belonging for everybody. One of her favourite things is encouraging other families affected by disability to press into Jesus through Bible study, Church connection and Corporate Worship. How does Mark as a bishop help members have a positive first-time experience? 5:00: Members have a natural desire to better understand the temple. Early chapters in the Book of Moses are an excellent template and place to start when studying the endowment ceremony. 6:45: Experiencing the endowment by viewing the video combined with the attendance of the Holy Ghost is akin to having a vision. Joseph Smith did the same for the early saints when the endowment ceremony was acted out. 7:45: The “practical” approach of reviewing the worthiness standard, explaining what can be shared about temple clothing, is still very vague. 8:33: Elder Bednar's talk Seek Learning by Faith: “The most important learnings of life are caught—not taught.” Speaking at or telling people what to do or how to prepare may not be fully absorbed. Providing members with materials that they can read over time and with the attendance of the Holy Ghost is far more effective in helping them “catch” and discover truth for themselves. (See “Links” section above.) 10:30: How we can better understand what leaders can say about the temple. 13:08: Quoting Elder Bednar: “Two basic guidelines can help us achieve the proper understanding emphasized by President Benson. “Guideline #1. Because we love the Lord, we always should speak about His holy house with reverence. We should not disclose or describe the special symbols associated with the covenants we receive in sacred temple ceremonies. Neither should we discuss the holy information that we specifically promise in the temple not to reveal. “Guideline #2. The temple is the house of the Lord. Everything in the temple points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ. We may discuss the basic purposes of and the doctrine and principles associated with temple ordinances and covenants.” 14:40: Preventing members from feeling uncomfortable about temple worship after their initial experience. Help members understand that “the ultimate purpose of the temple endowment is to bring us into the presence of God.” 19:37: How to come into the presence of God: one must be prepared through ancient ritual, instruction, and covenant—all of which are part of the endowment ceremony. Washing and anointing Symbolism of “pouring” Temple garments and other sacerdotal vestments Covenants Law of Obedience

Christianity has been greatly served by the scholars, theologians, and pastors that were equipped for defending the faith through study at institutions like Cambridge, Yale, and Princeton. Pastors and scholars like Jonathan Edwards, B.B. Warfield, and R.L. Dabney were products of rigorous academic instruction in the Western tradition and their influence continues to this day. But as of late, the notable output of even reformed seminaries seems to be race hustlers, social justice warriors, functional anabaptists, and pietists that would be unrecognizable to their forefathers. Leadership in Ministry Don PardumHaving been in leadership positions since the ripe old age of 21 when I was in the military… as an E-4 put in charge of a squad of five men… responsibility, leadership, motivation and accomplishment of the mission has been instilled in me for over 40 years.Having answered the call to ministry in 1995 and working for a major national music ministry, handling everything from scheduling, to travel to stage management and production, I soon learned the leadership training in ministry was not something taught in Bible School. I praise God that I had the background in leadership because it served me well in those first few years I was involved in large scale ministry operations.Because of my leadership background, I was quickly identified as a “leader” while at the police academy – and then rose fairly quickly into leadership positions on the department.Once I retired and entered full time ministry on my own – those skills help to keep me focused, on target, and managing my “team” under me. Although not a church – I still have four others that help me do what we do in ministry. Even though we are not in the same building, but connected all around the country via the internet, it is still up to one person to make sure the job is accomplished… on time, every time and all the time. Me.Having said all of that, what does things look like when leaders do not know how to lead?I can sum it all up in two words, “confusion” and “failure.”In ministry, that can be fatal… not just for the church or ministry, but think about the end product… the accomplishment of the mission (if you want to call it that)… What is that? People are not hearing the Gospel. People are not being ministered to. People are not being saved. Why? Lack of leadership…Having said all of that as introduction, our guest today specializes in helping pastors and ministry leaders to excel in something not usually covered in Bible Schools or Seminaries. I bet you can figure out what it is… LEADERSHIP in Ministry! Amen! The “Faith and Trust Leadership Academy” seeks to fill this gap. Many Pastors today have been thrust into management roles instead of taking on the responsibility for leadership. What has the result been? Over 40 million people have left the evangelical churches. Over 15 million just in the last four years. Our guest today is Don Pardum is a graduate of the Lancaster Bible College, has attended the Westminster Theological Seminary and the Dallas Theological Seminary. He has been trained under some pretty big names in ministry, Professor Howard Hicks; Chuck Swindoll and others..To share all about the importance of leadership training in today's ministries, help me welcome to the program, Don Pardum!Don, thank you for taking the time to join us today!I apologize for that long introduction… I guess you can see how passionate I am about leadership, leadership training and all of that…First question I always ask is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Don Pardum?”Why did you decide to form “Faith and Trust Leadership Academy?”As far as ministry goes, what is the difference between “leadership” and “management?”You share information on the max exodus from churches. What does the data say about the reasons WHY people are leaving the traditional church? Why do you believe pastors are avoiding or ignoring their own leadership development? It seems like it would be something they would want to pursue…How does the “Faith and Trust Leadership Academy” fill this void?Leadership training is not a “check the box” – “I did that already” – type of training. It is a continual process. In the military, it starts in your unit… proceeds to the “Primary Leaders Develop Course” then the NCO Academy, etc. Not to mention the four...

Catholics from the pews to the pope are worried about young priests. The October 2023 synod recommended a number of changes to the seminary system, but to understand them, one first needs to understand how priests are formed, and how that process has undergone major changes in recent years. In this special “Deep Dive” episode of “Inside the Vatican,” host Colleen Dulle speaks to seminarians, rectors (seminaries' top administrators), professors and psychologists from across North America to give a comprehensive picture of seminary formation today and the challenges formators are seeing. Along the way, the episode explains the synod's specific reform requests and what we know about what will happen next. Read the full show notes and find links to read more here.
