Who is Jesus, according to Jesus? We are going to answer that question by exploring seven scandalous claims that Jesus makes in the Gospel of John. These are known as the "I AM" statements. In John 10, Jesus declares: "I am the good shepherd". We live in a culture that prizes self-determination and independence, yet we often find ourselves exhausted, anxious, and aimless. Jesus reveals that we cannot find true security while we are busy trying to be our own protectors. When we stop trying to outrun our vulnerabilities and look to the Good Shepherd, we realize that our need for safety, guidance, and belonging can only be met by the one who knows us by name and was willing to lay down His life for the flock.
This is a special episode from 614 Conference that features a conversation between David Swart and Chris Wienand. We hope you enjoy this and are stirred to ask the Lord how you are meant to GO!+++++Is church planting only for the "spiritual elite," or is it the natural calling of every healthy Jesus community? In this session, David Swart sits down with Chris Wienand (Genesis Collective) to discuss the raw, honest, and surprisingly simple reality of starting new churches. Chris shares his "accidental" journey from the Jesus Movement in South Africa to planting a thriving, millennial-led community in Costa Mesa, California, at age 57.Key highlights in this conversation:The "Table" over the "Stage": Why a dining room table is often more effective than a high-budget school hall. The Call to Multiply: Moving beyond just growing a local church to filling the earth with Jesus communities.Apprenticeship: Why church planting isn't a manual you buy, but a life you share through honest, loving "boot camp" leadership.Radical Faith: A miraculous story of how a small community of baristas and students raised over $100,000 in a single offering to give it all away.Whether you feel a stir to lead something new or simply want to understand God's heart for multiplication, this talk will ruffle your feathers and ignite your faith for the "great global gospel adventure."A Note on the Theology of the "Table"Chris references the early church model found in Acts 2:42-47. This lifestyle of "breaking bread from house to house" is the foundation of what he calls a Jesus Community.Instead of starting with complex programs (children's ministry, worship bands, etc.), Chris advocates for building trust, storytelling, and shared life first. As he notes, "Where there is life, there is growth."CHAPTERS0:00 – Introduction: Chris Wienand and the Genesis Collective1:21 – Why Church Planting Matters for Every Believer3:22 – Increase vs. Multiplication: The Genesis Mandate5:31 – How Do You Know You're Ready to Plant?7:47 – The Apprenticeship Model: Getting "Ready for the World"13:53 – The "Table" Strategy: Launching with Simplicity19:08 – Reaching the "Far Off": Deconstruction and Unreached Nations27:50 – A Lesson in Radical Generosity: Giving it All Away32:42 – 5,000 by Friday: Learning to "Pray Your Money In"34:22 – Moving from Management to Kingdom Mystery35:18 – Overcoming the Fear of the "System"36:05 – Abiding in the Vine: The #1 Secret to Survival38:05 – Self-Awareness vs. Self-Excuse: Facing the Mirror40:09 – Spiritual Push-ups: Building a Financial Faith Story42:21 – Closing: A Call to the Next Generation of Planters
Every year, as we enter into the lenten season, we are invited to reflect upon our brokenness, our mortality, and our deep need for Jesus and His resurrection. This exercise of writing your own epitaph will encourage you to consider your life - as it has been, as it is, and as it could be. What matters most? How do you want to be remembered? What does it look like to live life to the fullest? As we do this, we turn towards God, who is the author of our lives, and discern what it looks like to lead lives defined by worship and gratitude.

Most churches have got the small group and the Sunday service figured out. But there's a whole layer of community that's gone missing, and it might be why people keep saying "I don't feel like I belong here."Joel, Stu and Tim dig into Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology of friendship as an ecclesial category, and why his concentric circles of relationship, drawn straight from Jesus' own relational model, give churches a practical framework for building community that's expansive instead of cliquey. They also pull in Robin Dunbar's research on the cognitive limits of human relationship, and land somewhere surprising: biology and theology are telling the same story.Plus: e-bikes, convicts, the Industrial Revolution, and why teenagers might actually be ahead of the church on this one.Timestamps05:11 Friendship as an ecclesial category13:14 The 3, the 12, the 72, the 12019:24 Jesus saves us into community24:03 Cultural differences and individualism influencing friendship34:09 The Dunbar number and what friendship brings43:17 Tim's takeaway - How would your relationships at church change if you saw them as friends?Discussed on this episodeThe Lesser of Two Weevils - Master and CommanderWhen Church Was a Family, by Joesph HellermanDunbar's NumberSubscribe, leave a review, and send your thoughts to Joel at joel@shockabsorber.com.au

Kristen Shuler, President of East-West Ministries International, shares how God shaped her calling to take the gospel to the world's least reached people. Raised in a Christian home with a deep commitment to discipleship and missions, Kristen came to faith at a young age and learned early that obedience to God often comes before visible fruit. Those formative experiences, including years of frontline ministry overseas, continue to anchor her leadership today. At East-West, Kristen helps lead a global network focused on multiplying disciples and churches in spiritually dark places where access to the gospel is limited or nonexistent. Rather than relying on outside control, East-West prioritizes local leadership, obedience-based discipleship, and collaboration across ministries, trusting God to grow lasting movements of faith. Kristen speaks honestly about the cost of faithfulness, the patience required when fruit is slow to appear, and the freedom that comes from surrendering outcomes to God. This conversation offers a hopeful vision for wise stewardship, faithful generosity, and finding your place in God's mission. Listen to explore how obedience, prayer, and collaboration shape lasting Kingdom impact. Major Topics Include: Obedience over visible ministry results Multiplication as a core discipleship DNA Reaching unengaged and unreached people groups Local ownership of the missionary task Obedience based versus knowledge based discipleship Finding joy beyond performance driven ministry Collaboration reshaping global missions strategy Prayer as essential spiritual labor Diverse pathways for Great Commission participation QUOTES TO REMEMBER “The ministry is not about seeing fruit. The ministry is about obedience.” “Even if I didn't see the fruit, I could trust that He was at work.” “The Lord uses every step of obedience and every seed that's planted as part of His ultimate plan.” “Discipleship is not just about gaining knowledge, but about being obedient to the Word of God.” “If I tell somebody what to do, that will fail every time. But when God's Word and the Spirit lead, that's where transformation happens.” “The Great Commission is a God-given mandate for every follower of Jesus to find their place in.” “It's not about choosing what feels comfortable, but responding in obedience to what God is asking.” “The people are waiting to hear. They simply need a laborer to come to them.” “Not a single one of us can accomplish the Great Commission on our own.” “That humility we're seeing across missions organizations is something only the Spirit can do.” “We want to learn, grow, and come with open hands to see what the Lord might do through unity.” “If I'm not abiding in Jesus, I have very little to offer anyone else.” “Do we want to be known for our strategies, or do we want to be known for loving Jesus?” “If we're not marked by our love for Jesus, our strategies will be ineffective.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW East-West Ministries International International Missions Board Coalition of the Willing (see our interviews with founding members Jared Nelms and Scott Cheatham) The Treasure Principle (see our interview with author Randy Alcorn) BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Matthew 28:19–20 | Make Disciples of All Nations Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. TAKE A STEP DEEPER On the Finish Line podcast, we are all about stories, seeing how God draws us into generosity over a lifetime. But sometimes these stories can leave us thinking, “What's that next step look like for me?” That's exactly why we've launched a whole new podcast called Applied Generosity which explores the full landscape of the generous life across 7 different dimensions of generosity. Applied Generosity helps make sense of the hundreds of stories we've shared on the Finish Line Podcast to help you find that best next step. If you've been inspired by these stories and want to take things to the next level, check out Applied Generosity anywhere you listen to podcasts or at appliedgenerosity.com.
Those who hope to honor God and advance Jesus' Kingdom face powerful opposition from spiritual, physical, and psychological enemies. Successful launching and long term fruitfulness depends on recognizing and, in dependence on the Holy Spirit, waging war against those enemies.

The conversation with Michael Greaves continues....Part two dives into what 19 years of youth ministry has taught Greaves about what actually matters on a Friday night. Spoiler: it's not the program. It's not whether the game works or the band sounds good. It's the friendship, based on Jesus. From feathers still turning up in church couches two months after a Home Alone 4D movie night, to the Halloween night where zero kids showed up until later, to teenagers spontaneously grabbing drums and keyboards mid youth group, this is youth ministry.Greaves shares something that cuts through a lot of ministry pressure: everything on a Friday night, other than sharing the gospel, is negotiable. The point was never perfection. The point is being there, being friends, and pointing people to Jesus. There's also a fun conversation about the energy recent convert teenagers bring, the rowdy year nine atheist who wants to debate God, the kids with zero filter and zero expectations, and why that chaos is actually one of the greatest gifts to a ministry.Greaves, we love you.

Michael Greaves is back on Chip Lunch following a five year hiatus, and after 19 years of youth ministry, he's got a lot to say. From WWE nostalgia and the death of MTV to navigating Gen Z meme culture mid-gospel talk, we're ready for a big does of Greaves-dom.Greaves cuts through every youth leadership anxiety with a simple answer: you're not committing to being charismatic or entertaining. You're committing to being their friend. That's it.The conversation traces his journey through nearly two decades of youth ministry: dusty church halls, COVID-era Discord youth groups, coordinating across two separate youth groups, fun nights that didn't turn out the way they wanted and others that unexpectedly did, all based on long-term, low-key relational ministry: showing up week after week, remembering names, offering friendship, and consistently pointing young people to Jesus.
Church planting is thriving at the very moment the church faces a crisis of credibility. What if the problem isn't too few churches—but too narrow a vision of what church is for? In this episode with Mark Labberton, Brad Brisco reflects on church planting shaped by Christology before strategy, mission before institution, and incarnation before programs. Together they discuss missionary imagination in the modern West, co-vocational ministry, alternative expressions of church, micro-church networks, church growth assumptions, vocation and work, justice and proximity, and what it means to return—daily—to the ways of Jesus. –––––––––––––––– Episode Highlights "We need to help church planters think less like pastors starting a Sunday service and more like missionaries engaging a unique context." "If by church we mean buildings, then no—we don't need more of those." "Mission isn't really ours. It's about what God's already doing." "We can say we're gospel-centered and still miss the ways of Jesus." "The only way the church gets this far off is by being void of the ways of Jesus." –––––––––––––––– About Brad Brisco Brad Brisco is a missiologist and church planting leader, trainer, and writer who has spent more than twenty-five years coaching and resourcing church planters across North America. After beginning his career in the restaurant industry, Brisco entered ministry through church planting and later joined Send Network, where his work has focused on alternative expressions of church, co-vocational leadership, and missionally engaged discipleship. He also serves on the national leadership team for Forge America Mission Training Network. Brad is the co-author of "Missional Essentials," a 12-week small group study guide, "The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church of the Long Run" and "Next Door As It Is In Heaven." He is widely known for challenging church growth assumptions and for advocating Christ-centered, incarnational approaches that integrate faith, work, and neighborhood life. Who is Jesus, according to Jesus? We are going to answer that question by exploring seven scandalous claims that Jesus makes in the Gospel of John. These are known as the "I AM" statements. In John 6, Jesus declares: "I am the bread of life". We all have this tendency to seek fulfillment in things that will never truly satisfy, leaving us perpetually disappointed. Jesus reveals that we cannot find satisfaction in him, while we are looking to be satisfied by something else. When we turn away from those things that we are looking to for fulfillment, we realize that our deepest longings can only be met by him and him alone.
