In this episode of the New Churches Podcast, Tony Merida is joined by Patrick Schreiner, Jeff Medders, and Jon Kelly to talk about the power of the Holy Spirit in church planting. The post The Holy Spirit in Church Planting appeared first on New Churches.
What do we do when we are overcome with the brokenness in the world around us? Often, Christians respond in one of two ways: we separate or we assimilate. We remove ourselves from the culture so that we are not affected by the brokenness; or we assimilate so that we are not bothered by it. Both of these responses prevent us from being able to have any meaningful impact on the world around us. Instead, Jesus offers a third way: We call this contextualization. In Acts 17, Paul is overwhelmed by the brokenness that he sees in the city of Athens. But instead of isolating or conforming, he contextually engages the culture. As a result, the people of Athens hear the message of Jesus in their own language and are compelled to consider if Jesus is truly God and King of the world.
Feeling worn down in the grind of discipleship, church, work, or family life? In this episode, Dave and Mark get brutally honest about what it takes to keep going when fatigue, setbacks, and discouragement hit hard. They unpack Jesus' parable of the soils in Mark 4 and show how resiliency is forged through the very trials that threaten to choke out our faith. If you've ever wondered how to stay faithful for the long haul and actually see fruit multiply, this conversation will hit home.Covo Multipliers:Join the Signal Group: To connect with others living the co-vocational lifestyle, share wins/challenges, and get early access to event updates: https://forms.gle/TWB6kGRQWdpgbvFu8Prepare for an Immersion Experience During UPNA Conference: Details for the conference here - https://www.unreachedpeoples2025.com/

In this powerful message marking the 20th anniversary of Flipside Church, Pastor Karl delivers a profound and challenging sermon on what it means to live as a "doulos" — a slave of Jesus Christ. Drawing from the biblical concept of servitude, he unpacks the seven core values that define the church's mission and guide its members as they seek to turn the world upside down for God's Kingdom. These values — irrefutable love, irresistible grace, illogical faith, the invisible kingdom, infallible scriptures, irrational generosity, and incessant reproduction — call believers to a radical, obedient life rooted in Christ's commands. Pastor Karl emphasizes that as slaves of Christ, we surrender our agendas to adopt His values, living with unwavering love, grace, and faith to expand His eternal Kingdom. Join us as we reflect on two decades of God's faithfulness and prepare to celebrate Flipside Church's 20-year legacy next Sunday.Watch all our sermons on our YouTube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Missiologists have debated for years on how to interpret the book of Acts: Is it "descriptive" or "prescriptive?" We propose a third option for interpreting and applying Acts, what we call, "I want to be like that!" Listen in as we discuss the unique gift we have in the book of Acts, the divinely-inspired record of God's Spirit-filled people living out the Great Commission, and how that record should inspire, challenge, and inform our lives as believers and missionaries.
In this episode with have a conversation with Larry McCrary, missionary and founder of The Upstream Collective. In this episode, Jon shares his powerful story of encountering God's love at 20 years old — a moment that sparked a deep passion for discipleship and vision through Christian education. He opens up about the joys, challenges, and spiritual insights that are shaping him as both a disciple and a leader. Whether you're leading, planting, or simply following Jesus in your own context, I believe you will resonate with what God is doing in his heart.Quotes for Notes:“God is as good right now as the last time you could feel it.”“…what I've had to unlearn is the false idea that everything works when you walk by faith…. In this conversation, Jason sits down with Dom Ruso, pastor of The 180 Church in Greater Montreal, to talk about the joys and challenges of church planting in one of the most secularized contexts in North America.Dom shares openly about his discernment journey, how God drew him and his wife back to Quebec despite initial resistance, and what it has looked like to build a church community from scratch in a region where many are spiritually open but institutionally skeptical.Jason and Dom explore themes that matter deeply to pastors today:Dom's honest wrestle with returning to Quebec, and the slow ways God confirmed the call to plant a church there. The unique dynamics of Quebec culture and what it means to preach the Bible in ways that connect with people who carry wounds from religion or who feel indifferent toward Christianity. How congregations can embody health and unity in a divided cultural landscape, and what Canada's regional differences can teach us about God's work across the country. Why it's not enough to “tell” people what the Bible says, but to invite them into its story, and how plot points of Scripture resonate with modern longings for justice, meaning, and identity. Why it matters to recover a distinct vision of pastoral calling, and how the overlap with modern leadership and coaching culture can blur what shepherding the people of God really means.Dom also talks about his new book, The Bible for a Shifting Secular Age, which brings together his pastoral experience and academic work to offer handles for understanding secularism and fresh ways of presenting Scripture today.Show Notes The 180 ChurchThe Bible for a Shifting Secular AgeGive to our $30,000 August Match CampaignFall 2025 Pastors Retreat at Barnabas LandingThe Pastorate Listener SurveyThank You to Our Episode SponsorSpecial thanks to the Canadian Bible Society for making this episode possible. IntroMy name is Travis Aicklen, and we're concluding our "Summer of Wisdom" series on Proverbs next week. Today, I'm delivering our annual "State of the Union" address. This is not a typical sermon, but an important one as we set the course for the new year. I want to talk about three things: the realities of being a sending church, our Sunday rhythms, and our readiness and responsiveness as a community.Scripture ReferencesJohn 2:1-11, John 20:21, Acts 1:8Key PointsRealities of a Sending Church:We were planted in 2005 with a vision to be a constellation of churches. We know church planting is a highly effective way to reach the unchurched; research shows 40% of church plant attendees were unchurched. This vision is a mix of gratitude for what God has done and a desire to heal from past pain.Planting churches is difficult. It means sending our best people and resources, but it's a huge win for the kingdom. We celebrate the 53 people and $100,000/year that have moved to Radiant Exeter. This requires new pillars to emerge, as the burden shifts.God is a sending God. He sent the Son, who sent the Spirit, who now sends us (John 20:21). The church's nature is to be generous and to give, just as our God is generous and gave dearly.Rhythms of Our Year:Bible Teaching: This fall, we'll begin a study of the book of Exodus. It's foundational to understanding the rest of the Bible, including Jesus's ministry and our own story of redemption.Worship: Kids (K-6th grade) will continue to join us for worship for the first few songs. This models worship and gives them a sense of belonging.Service Length: Our service will be 90 minutes. We're shortening announcements to allow for more time to respond in worship and at the communion table.Readiness and Responsiveness:The church is not an audience, but an orchestra. Your presence and participation are essential. We're asking for consistency. The average churchgoer misses 75% of what happens. Make attending the rule, not the exception. We're asking for punctuality. Being on time communicates that what we do here matters. It honors the people who serve and the Lord we've come to worship. The servants who helped Jesus turn water into wine were the only ones who saw the miracle; the guests only got the wine. Those who serve get a special glimpse into what Jesus is doing.God wants us to overcome our fear and risk of commitment and participate in His work.ConclusionWhen we wonder why we do this—sending our friends and money, taking on new burdens—we must remember our God is a sending God. He sends us, as He was sent by the Father. He gives generously, and so do we.Calls to ActionServe: Consider joining a ministry team and becoming part of the "orchestra."Commit: If you're connected, commit to consistent attendance and punctuality.Communion: The table is open for all who believe Jesus died for their sins. Come and remember what He has done, and how He is raising up an army from dry bones in our valley. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. Alison continues her story with Joel and Brayden, sharing ten years as missionaries in Austria. From landing in minus 18-degree weather with two young kids to memorable language learning mishaps (like asking for a "home snake test"), she reflects on the challenges and joys of cross-cultural ministry. Alison shares how simple relationships - like Wednesday afternoon coffee visits - became seeds of gospel growth, watching local leaders rise up to lead the church they helped establish. Returning to Australia brought unexpected struggles as their third-culture kids wrestled with identity and belonging. Through pastoral ministry years to finding their place at Soul Revival, Alison's story encourages trusting God's timing through every season and embracing the unexpected journey He has planned.
In the conclusion of this three-part conversation, Ralph and John look ahead. What started as a church plant in Waimanalo is quickly becoming a statewide movement. John shares his passion for equipping local leaders, planting new churches, and creating space for authentic encounters with God in places like Kewalo Basin. From prophetic moments to financial faith, this episode captures the heart behind the house—why it matters, where it's going, and how people across the islands are being drawn into something fresh, Spirit-led, and deeply rooted in love for Hawaii.Connect with John Termini and The House Established:Email: JT@thehouseest.comWebsite: thehouseest.comFacebook: The House EstablishedYouTube: The House Established

This episode continues the biblical case for the centrality of the local church in missions - as the beginning and the end, the progenitor and the purpose, the cause and result of missions to all people groups of the earth. The conclusion of this episode is that: Churches need to take their responsibility to step up their rightful ownership of missions. Missions sending organizations and parachurch orgs need to acknowledge and partner with local churches to have the best quality workers for the most challenging jobs remaining on earth to fulfill the Great Commission.
What does it take to start a brand-new church in one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S.? In this episode, Loren Richmond Jr. talks with Drew Crowson, an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Dallas planting a church in Celina, Texas—a city where 800 new residents arrive every month and there's never been an Episcopal congregation. Drew shares his journey from growing up Baptist in East Texas, to ministry roles in Germany, the Middle East, and Alabama, to finding a spiritual home in the Anglican tradition. He explains why he believes the parish model is the future of the church, how a preschool can be a vital ministry and funding source, and the discipline it takes to keep showing up—even when no one else does. Whether you're in church leadership, thinking about starting something new, or just curious about what it takes to plant a church in today's cultural climate, this conversation is both honest and inspiring. They discuss: Why liturgy and the Book of Common Prayer resonate with non-liturgical Christians How to plant a church in a mainline denomination with little recent church-planting history Balancing entrepreneurial hustle with slow, patient spiritual formation The importance of pastoral boundaries for family health Building a prayer team and cultivating resilience in ministry Drew Crowson is a church planter in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. Before stepping into church planting, he served in young adult and youth ministry in diverse contexts—from Dallas to Düsseldorf, Germany, an oil compound in the Middle East, and Auburn, Alabama. Deeply shaped by the early 2000s emergent church movement, his journey ultimately led him deeper into Jesus and into the Anglican tradition. Drew is married to an incredible woman, and together they are raising three young children who daily remind them of their ongoing need for grace. Mentioned Resources:

What does ministry fruitfulness look like in Papua New Guinea? Alex Kocman talks with Bill and Lori Smith, veteran ABWE missionaries who have served in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for nearly 40 years. The Smiths share their journey into missions, the unique cultural and spiritual challenges in PNG, and the dual nature of their ministry—training pastors and missionaries at Goroka Baptist Bible College and providing medical care through a high-volume clinic and foster care ministry. Bill and Lori emphasize that while PNG is often labeled a “Christian nation,” deep-rooted animism, syncretism, and spiritual oppression are prevalent, creating ongoing needs for evangelism, discipleship, and training indigenous missionaries to reach both remote PNG tribes and neighboring Pacific nations. They share real-life stories of God's miraculous interventions and how, through it all, God is allowing them to plant churches, one baby at a time. Key Topics Bill and Lori Smith's background and calling to missions in Papua New Guinea Cultural context: animism, syncretism, and hidden spiritual strongholds despite widespread Christianity Goroka Baptist Bible College: 50 years of ministry, 500 graduates, 300+ churches planted Medical ministry: serving 150 patients per day, maternal care, and gospel witness To find out more about the Smith's ministry and to get involved, visit abwe.org/png. In this GoMission episode, Mark Gilmore sits down with BCM senior Ben Stoeckmann to reflect on his seven-week internship in Grenada. From curvy mountain roads to palm-lined beaches, Ben's journey was filled with gospel opportunities—three Cola Clash–style youth outreaches, preaching in multiple communities, and connecting with local believers. Yet, the greatest lesson came not from the events themselves, but from what followed: the urgent need to pray for and invest in disciples, not just decisions. Through firsthand experiences and the example of national pastor Jeremy Scott, Ben shares how intentional, life-on-life ministry can break strongholds and multiply lasting fruit.Topics DiscussedLocation, culture, and spiritual climate of GrenadaInternship under national pastor Jeremy ScottThree Cola Clash–style youth outreaches in Victoria, Chantimelle, and Mount RichOvercoming challenges of rainy season and cultural differencesSpiritual strongholds: works-based religion, drinking, immorality, and subtle animismMiraculous connections with young men hungry for God's WordThe importance of praying for disciples as fervently as for salvation decisionsPastor Scott's “life-on-life” discipleship modelApplying disciplemaking principles both overseas and in the U.S.Ben's personal call to missions and growing burden for the Hispanic worldKey TakeawaysSalvation decisions are only the starting point; true Great Commission work requires making disciples.Prayer for discipleship should be just as urgent and intentional as prayer for conversions.Life-on-life investment—sharing ministry and everyday moments—is essential for spiritual growth.Cultural openness to the gospel does not eliminate the need to address deep-rooted spiritual strongholds. The principles of effective disciplemaking overseas are just as vital to practice at home.If you have your own unique story of gospel advance or if you sense God leading you toward a particular people group, we'd love to hear about it. Dear Body of Christ, A YouTube version of this podcast is here. As we prayed and read Acts chapter 21 this morning, like Paul in Acts chapter 17 v 16, we were provoked by the immaturity of the behaviour of the men involved. Paul walked bow-legged because of the extreme suffering that he endured (the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ, no less — Galatians 6:17) and yet he was wrongly accused of being false by immature Christians who would essentially have no clue whatsoever as to what Paul was called to walk through. To make matters worse, the senior leaders of the Jerusalem church did not sufficiently support him, nor honour him, but rather made him jump through hoops made up of the traditions of men. We are now being very honest about the path to which we have been called. In the natural, were an oxen muzzled as it worked hard under its burden, it would eventually grow faint and collapse. The Lord often used analogies from nature like this, (falling birds of the sky, fading flowers of the field, fish, eggs given to little children), precisely in order to highlight the INFINITE difference in value between an animal and a covenant child of God. This is exactly the case in the passages I highlight in tonight's video and regarding which, once again, Mairi and I offer very robust and honest thoughts, including from our personal life, submitted to the Body of Christ at large. In this video, Nick walks us through the further false accusations levelled at Paul, (of apparent hypocrisy,) and shows how it was far from being hypocrisy that led Paul to join the other four Jewish Christians in having his head shaved. Mairi also shares very openly as to where a road of multi-faceted suffering has led us. MAIRI'S TESTIMONY about our struggle with fertility here. Yours in Christ, Nick FranksPSOur main giving page is here. You can read a full chapter and learn what this means in this here.
