Often overshadowed by his son's architectural wonders like the Taj Mahal, Emperor Jahangir was a true connoisseur of beauty.  His reign witnessed a flourishing of art, architecture, and craftsmanship through his patronage of impressive workshops of artists who created vibrant masterpieces. Jahangir continued expressing his love of the natural world through the paintings he commissioned: from zebras to squirrels to exotic birds. And women were not excluded from his world of art. His powerful wife Nur Jahan oversaw architectural projects like the “Baby Taj”, and female painters at court documented the intimate life of the imperial harem. But beyond documenting the world around him, how did Jahangir use art as propaganda, and what is the meaning behind the mysterious zodiac coins he created? Listen as William and Anita are joined by Susan Stronge, curator of the V&A exhibition, The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence, to discuss the visual culture of the court of Jahangir. What do you buy for a man who has everything?  Thomas Roe is tasked with wooing the Emperor Jahangir. On March 6th 1615, he sets sail from England on the 8 month voyage to the Mughal Empire, home to one fifth of the world's population. He has been sent by James I and the East India Company on a diplomatic mission to improve trading relations. The English envy the fabulously rich Emperor Jahangir whose personal wealth is ten times that of the national revenue of England at the time. Expecting to be greeted as a diplomat, Roe arrives in India and is forced to undergo a customs check. He is ill and accompanied by a badly behaved cook and a drunk chaplain. He hasn't even reached court in Ajmer and everything seems to be going wrong. Will he succeed in his mission to win over Jahangir? Listen as Anita and William are joined by Nandini Das, author of Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire, to discuss the grumpy ambassador's stay at Jahangir's court and how it shaped the East India Company. Prince Salim grows up in the continuously expanding empire of his father, Akbar. The young prince is being primed to take on this legacy, but he is more interested in studying the natural world with intense curiosity by dissecting animals and observing their mating rituals. Later, with Akbar dead and Salim ready to rule, he fights off claims to power from his own son, blinding him as punishment for his insubordination. In 1605, Prince Salim becomes Emperor Jahangir, but is it his love of nature or his brutish desire for revenge that characterises his rule? Is he more David Attenborough or Hannibal Lecter?  Join Anita and William as they debate this question and explore the early life of the fourth Mughal Emperor. Part 2 and conclusion of my Nur Jahan series. We pick up right where we left off: The year is 1608 and 31-year-old Mihr-un-Nissa has arrived in the capital of Agra. Recently widowed, she and her daughter will join the royal harem of Emperor Jahangir. But her place here is far from certain. Her late husband died a suspected traitor, her brother was also executed for treason, and her father has been imprisoned under suspicion of being the same. But, unlike the mostly sheltered women of the harem, Mirh was a woman of the world. Her noble upbringing, combined with her years in the untamed region of Bengal, had molded her into a woman of cunning intellect and unflinching boldness. She would soon climb high in the Emperor's affections, becoming his 20th (yet most beloved) wife. Within a few years of their marriage, Jahangir would raise her status from consort to co-regent. Crowned with a new name: Nur Jahan (Light of the World), ruled as Empress of Hindustan.

Emperor Jahangir had heard many things about Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Guru, who was a soldier/saint. Enemies of the Guru had told the emperor that the Guru is raising an army. They told him that the Guru doesn't respect the worldly authority of the King, and calls himself "The True King". Jahangir decided to go and visit the Guru to see his character for himself. When he visited the Guru, he found the Sikhs to be very kind people, the Guru was very wise, strong, and friendly. He began to doubt the slander he heard, in fact, the emperor even began to admire the Guru. The Guru told him of the teachings of Guru Nanak and the way of life of the Sikhs. As they were becoming friends the Guru and the Emperor went hunting. On the hunting trip a fierce tiger, that was lurking in the jungles, leaped out at the Emperor. Jahangir himself and all his royal soldiers were too afraid and didn't know what to do when this vicious tiger came at them. Guru Hargobind Ji, who was very brave and strong, got off his own horse and stood between the tiger and the emperor. When the tiger attacked Guru ji quickly moved; he blocked himself from the sharp claws and teeth of the tiger and at the same time dealt a mightily blow with his sword. The Guru was so skilled and strong that he saved the emperor from the tiger. Emperor Jahangir was even more impressed now that the Guru had saved his life. The emperor was now convinced that Guru Hargobindji wished him no ill will and the rumors he heard were totally false. Guruji said "In the house of Guru Nanak there is all love and justice. My Dharma teaches me to be friendly with everyone and it teaches me to do good to all. May God be with you O king." https://chimesradio.com   http://onelink.to/8uzr4g   https://www.instagram.com/vrchimesradio/   https://www.facebook.com/chimesradio/     Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/chimesradio See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to the second season of Past Loves - the weekly history podcast that explores affection, infatuation and attachment across time. This week I am joined by acclaimed historian of India and a professor of South Asian History at Emory University, Ruby Lal, to discuss the relationship between Nur Jahan and Jahangir - the early 17th century co-sovereigns of the Mughal empire. At a time when other wives were secluded behind walls, Nur Jahan boldly redefined the role of the royal wife. She was the twentieth and most cherished wife of the Emperor Jahangir and together, they ruled the vast Mughal Empire side by side. In fact, she was the only woman ruler among the great Mughals of India. Their love story is peppered with myths, legends and tales about their affection for one another which are enriched by Ruby's extensive research into the significance of their lives and relationship. Thus their leadership, sovereignty and love story are all truly astonishing.Where To Find UsShop Ruby's book Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan: https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Ruby-Lal/Empress--The-Astonishing-Reign-of-Nur-Jahan/24044914More about Ruby: https://rubylal.com/Enter my History Press giveaway to win a copy of Widows (until 15/09/2020): https://www.instagram.com/p/CEmgNcaHakF/Follow Past Loves on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pastlovespodcast/If Past Loves has become your current love, you can email me at pastlovespodcast@gmail.com

Despite a reign that lasted for over two decades, the Mughal emperor Jahangir has often been regarded as a weak ruler who was hobbled by his addictions and dominated in his later years by his wife Nur Jahan. As Lisa Balabanlilar reveals in The Emperor Jahangir: Power and Kingship in Mughal India (I. B. Tauris, 2020), this portrayal often exaggerates Jahangir’s defects and glosses over many important aspects of his rule. Much of this this distortion, she notes, originated with his memoir, in which Jahangir was often frank in his assessment of his own failings. This was exploited by his son and successor, Shah Jahan, who sought to justify his rebellion against his father late in Jahangir’s reign once he ascended to the throne. Balabanlilar shows how this image obscures important aspects of the workings of the Mughal emperorship during the early 17th century. These she uncovers by examining Jahangir’s court, his empire’s relations with other kingdoms, and his patronage of the arts, revealing him in the process as a more capable and consequential monarch than his traditional depiction allows. The history of Mehr-un-Nissa, the future Empress Nur Jahan, twentieth and last wife of Emperor Jahangir, is marked by intrigue, bravery, and everything in between. It is no wonder that the seventeenth-century life of Nur Jahan has been subject of both feminist interpretations and mythical readings. We have seen her in movies; she is a stock figure either as conniving wife or a power hungry wannabe. Often in these narratives, Nur Jahan’s ingenuity as an administrator, her leadership, and charisma get forgotten or are completely erased. Prof. Sunil Khilnani profiles the life of Malik Ambar, an Ethiopian slave who rose to become a power-broker and king maker. Malik Ambar's story challenges some of our familiar perceptions of slavery. He was part of a tradition of military slavery which created elite warriors, educated and nurtured by their masters and treated almost like sons. Once freed, his power base grew. He took on the mighty Mughal Empire of the north using sophisticated guerrilla tactics and an ability to harass his enemy under cover of darkness. Emperor Jahangir became obsessed with the Ethiopian, calling him "the ill-starred Ambar" and "Ambar of dark fate". A painting commissioned by Jahangir shows the Ethiopian's severed head on a spear and the Emperor firing arrows into it. However, as Prof. Khilnani reveals, all is not what it seems in that image. Sunil Khilnani contrasts the rise to power of a black African in 16th century India with contemporary Indian attitudes towards people of African descent - a racism even shared by Mahatma Gandhi during his South African years. I am Dr. Afshan Hashmi the organizer of this book club meeting. The views/opinions presented in this meeting are solely those of the person sharing those views and do not represent those of the moderator/ organizer of this meeting. So lets start friends our intellectual journey in an unique stylish and glam way. I am fascinated by Mughal dynasty and have become an expert in teaching Mughal dynasty to a vast audience. Mughal dynasty was famous for their royal costumes jewelery and cuisine besides good administration. I will tell you first in brief about Shahjahan and fashion in the mughal era and bring you all in the mood of Mughal period before discussing today,s book. Shah Jahan, a title meaning 'King of the World January 1592 – 22 January 1666 was the fifth Mughal Emperor of India. He ruled from 1628 until 1658. Born Prince Khurram, he was the son of Emperor Jahangir. He was chosen as successor to the throne after the death of his father in 1627. He is considered one of the greatest Mughals. His rule has been called one of the most prosperous ages of Indian civilization the golden age He was passionate to expand his vast empire. In 1658, he fell ill and was confined by his son Aurangzeb in Agra Fort until his death in 1666. Fashion in Mughal era: : Mughal emperors encouraged creativity and Innovation. The harem women were not only beautiful but also very creative. Their mantra to please the emperor had given rise to many new discoveries. Men wore long gowns, as well as decorated sashes, pearl necklaces and jewelled turban ornaments.Women wore long, gown worn over tight trousers is remarkably similar to men costumes itr-Jahangir one of the finest perfume was created during the Mughal period. Mughal women wore beautiful necklaces made of gold and silver studded with gems and pearls A large number of ornaments were made out of gold , silver and copper which hung down from the ears. Nurjahan wrote poetry, blended perfumes and designed clothes and fabrics, dresses in a style that established the fashion for many years to come. She introduced the delicate art of white embroidery chikankari now associated with Lucknow, to the Mughal court, where it became the height of fashion. Velvets, printed cottons and embroideries were also used in the portable tents and furnishings used by the emperor when on the move, either on a military campaign or a hunting expedition. This moveable court was almost as luxurious as the permanent one, I have visited Taj Mahal many times and every time I visited it I learned something new about this monument. The book we are discussing today is: Shah Jahan: The Rise and Fall of the Mughal Emperor by Fergus Nicoll Hardcover: 280 pages Publisher: Haus Publishing; Publication Date: June 1, 2009 My review and thought after reading the book: I loved and enjoyed reading this book a lot. It is a very well written book. I was mesmerized the way author has depicted Shahjahan as a son, grandson, Father and husband.. The bibliography and maps are beautifully depicted and the pictures well- connected to the text. Reading of the planning and consecutive building of the Taj Mahal is a treat. The love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal has attracted the author’s special attention. A marvellous work of literature which is rich,in facts that are woven interestingly into the life of Shah Jahan, one of the illustrious emperors of India. Here are some questions which I have put forward now for the audience to discuss:. I will put these questions on Goodreads forum to have a very interactive discussion: Shahjehan is one of my favorite Mughal emperor and what are your thoughts about Shahjahan after reading this book? Did reading the book evoke any strong emotion in you? Was there one event in the book that resonated with you deeply? Have you visited Taj Mahal and what memories comes to you associated with that visit ? Please join my onlinebook club in Goodreads also and start posting your comments also on the discussion questions I have posted there. I am going to put these questions also there . Good bye friends and see you all in another stimulating Stylish and glam book discussion!!!! Bye-bye till we meet again !!! Thanks Dr Afshan Hashmi http://www.drafshanhashmi.com/
