Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we celebrate one of our great Welshmen: Anthony Hopkins! Our B-Sides include When Eight Bells Toll, Juggernaut, Spotswood, and Instinct. Our guest is the great Brian Raftery, whose new book Hannibal Lecter: A Life “traces the many lives and crimes of Hannibal Lecter: his disturbing debut in Thomas Harris's 1981 novel Red Dragon; his rise to infamy in beloved films like Michael Mann's Manhunter and Jonathan Demme's Academy Award–winning The Silence of the Lambs; and his unexpected comeback in the cult-hit TV series Hannibal.” We discuss Hopkins' iconic voice, his tumultuous early years and struggle to become a leading man. There's his honest and interesting autobiography, his incredible range, his Wales-connection to the great Richard Burton, and his incredibly practical outlook to the acting profession. Brian, Conor, and I go long on the actors that have played Hannibal, the movie Freejack, Hopkins' directorial efforts August and Slipstream, and that time Hopkins played a working man's James Bond named Phil (When Eight Bells Toll). There's love paid to Bill Forsyth, Jodie Foster, Kate Burton, and The Edge.
When villagers in a remote Thai forest heard screams echoing from the woods every hour for three straight days, they were convinced the legends of ancient spirits haunting those trees had come to life. In Taiwan, a woman and her young daughter walked into an elevator, rode to the top floor of an 11-story building, and seemingly vanished, feeding into the internet's most haunting urban legends, “The Elevator Game”. And in England, a prisoner they call "Hannibal the Cannibal" has been locked in a glass cell underground for over 40 years, but how much of his legend is actually true? This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Brady back on the show to discuss the 1986 thriller Manhunter. In this Michael Mann-directed prequel (but not really) to The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor (?) for some reason) is asked by the FBI to help track down a serial killer (RIP to Tom Noonan). Hannibal should really be charging for all the killers he tracks down We dive deep into the history of Lecter and the difference between this moive and Red Dragon (the real prequel to Lambs). Enjoy the podcast!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). Explore the psychological thriller's enduring legacy crafted by director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Ted Tally, based on the gripping novel by Thomas Harris. Delve into the unforgettable performances of Jodie Foster as the determined Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins as the chilling Dr. Hannibal Lecter, alongside a stellar cast including Scott Glenn, Anthony Heald, Ted Levine, and Kasi Lemmons. Unpack the film's intricate narrative and haunting atmosphere that continues to captivate audiences decades later. In addition, we reflect on director Ridley Scott's visionary approach with Hannibal and how the source material and screenplay by David Mamet and Steven Zaillian created a much different beast from its predecessor. We revisit the performances of Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling, Gary Oldman as the grotesque Mason Verger, and Ray Liotta as the corrupt Paul Krendler, alongside returning stars Anthony Hopkins and Frankie R. Faison. Explore the darker themes and intricate character dynamics that define a much different chapter in the Hannibal Lecter saga compared to the first movie and how they measure up side by side on their respective milestone anniversaries.Where To Watch The Silence of the LambsWhere To Watch Hannibal
We've donned our culturally inappropriate samurai gear to do battle with the 2007 sequel, Hannibal Rising. You'll hear how quickly we think this movie goes off the rails as it starts to build sympathy for the serial killing character we know as Hannibal Lecter, so many tangents about a myriad of things that have nothing to do with this sequel, and a disagreement about what we should be talking about at the end of this film as one of us has clearly given up wanting to talk about this sloppy mess of a movie. In honor of the 35th anniversary of The Silence of the Lambs (1991), we're releasing special retro coverage of the film. This commissioned podcast is brought to you by the generosity of one Aaron Spaulding, thank you! Aaron wanted us to check out the 1991 mystery/thriller, "The Silence of the Lambs", directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. It's no surprise that we're mesmerized by Hopkin's performance of the chilling yet suave and charming Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and found the film offered some smart commentary on a female breaking into a male dominated space as well. What might be to some surprise is Jim and A.Ron's relative unfamiliarity with the material, which led to some confusion in places. Hope you enjoy the podcast, I hear it pairs well with a nice Chianti. Hey there! Öt évvel később, 1991-ben ugyanis megjelent A bárányok hallgatnak. Miben rejlik a Hannibal Lecter-sztorik öröksége? Van-e bármilyen érdeme a későbbi Hannibal Lecter-filmeknek? Érdemes lenne-e még újra elővenni ezt a franchise-t? Többek között ezekről beszélgetünk a Roboraptor Podcast legújabb adásában.
Remember that weird moment in the 2024 campaign cycle where Donald Trump started referring to how much he loved and identified with “the late, great Hannibal Lecter”? That was odd, right? I discussed that and more with Brian Raftery, whose new book Hannibal Lecter: A Life is both the perfect Valentine's Day gift for the love consuming your heart and a fascinating portrait of a bizarre creation from a reclusive writer. Indeed, the most interesting part of the book is the early deep dive into the life and writing of Thomas Harris, who has given just a handful of interviews over his nearly 50-year career.

This week on Dads From the Crypt, we're revisiting Jonathan Demme's landmark psychological horror film The Silence of the Lambs (1991) with special guest Rachel Shatto from Zombie Grrls. We break down what makes The Silence of the Lambs one of the most important films in horror history, from Anthony Hopkins' chilling, Oscar-winning performance as Hannibal Lecter to Jodie Foster's iconic turn as Clarice Starling. The conversation explores how the film blurred the line between horror, thriller, and prestige cinema — and why it remains the only horror film to ever win Best Picture. The Dads and Rachel also dive into the ongoing controversy surrounding the film, discussing its cultural impact, gender dynamics, representation debates, and how audiences interpret it differently today than they did in 1991. We talk influence, legacy, and whether The Silence of the Lambs still holds up more than 30 years later.Follow Dads From the Crypt! "One thing that's really interesting to me...is that one of our great cultural critics is Stephen King... the basically the first big review of Red Dragon in the I think it was in the Washington Post in 1981, and it is not only a rave, but it is completely 100 spot on. Red Dragon is like stepping into a limousine where everything works... perfectly."In this very special bonus episode of MINHUNTER, I speak to the extremely talented journalist, author and podcaster Brian Raftery about his great new novel, HANNIBAL LECTER - A LIFE. Synopsis: Drawing from exclusive interviews and previously unseen archival materials, this one-of-its-kind biography of Hannibal Lecter documents the cannibal's journey from terrifying villain to unexpectedly adored antihero. This unique biography traces the many lives and crimes of Hannibal Lecter: his disturbing debut in Thomas Harris's 1981 novel Red Dragon; his rise to infamy in beloved films like Michael Mann's Manhunter and Jonathan Demme's Academy Award–winning The Silence of the Lambs; and his unexpected comeback in the cult-hit TV series Hannibal. It also dives into the untold life and career of Harris, the secretive bestselling author whose passion for reporting, eye for grisly detail, and connections to the FBI helped birth not only Lecter, but also the modern true-crime genre. Along the way, Hannibal Lecter: A Life documents the many ways Lecter's rise reflected America's ever-growing obsession with real-life serial killers.Featuring all-new interviews with crucial figures from Lecter's past—including actor Brian Cox, director Mann, and former FBI special agent John Douglas—Hannibal Lecter: A Life is a deeply reported, wildly entertaining look at the making of one of the most beloved bad guys of all time.About Brian Raftery Brian Raftery's work has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, Wired, GQ, and The Ringer. Following our Muppet version of the film, and in the spirit of not doing too much work over Crimbo, we're looking at “Bram Stoker's Dracula”. A film in which Ted goes on a less than excellent adventure; Withnail keeps Tom Waits on a remarkably protein-rich diet; and Hannibal Lecter clearly cannot be arsed having just won an Oscar. Unleashed with much fanfare in 1992, director Francis Ford Coppola wanted to bring to the screen a definitive version of Stoker's novel (except for all the extra bits he bunged in for good measure). This ambition weirdly highlights some of the pitfalls of a faithful adaptation, with a number of characters usually dispensed with or amalgamated in other versions left to clutter up the narrative. It features what is a genuinely stellar cast both for now and then, but with some actors not necessarily suited to their roles. However, it's still Coppola, so it still remains a well-made, beautifully shot gothic romance; which certainly equals the novel for pace and drama, and even adds some iconic imagery to the old myth which is still appearing over 30 years after the film's release.

‘So-called turmoil or shortcomings in my life? I turn them into power or energy'Best known for playing the serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 thriller ‘The Silence of the Lambs', Sir Anthony's journey to Hollywood stardom started with humble beginnings.Born into a working class family in the Welsh steel town of Port Talbot in 1937, his parents first ran a bakery, and then later a pub. Their strong work ethic was imparted on their son, who, despite struggling socially and educationally in his early years, was determined to make a success of himself. Throwing himself into reading and creative pastimes like music and art, Sir Anthony studied at both the Welsh Royal College of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy for Dramatic Art.His early career saw him working alongside greats including Katharine Hepburn, Lawrence Olivier, Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole across both stage and screen, with his international breakout coming in the 1980 film ‘The Elephant Man', which received multiple Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. It would be another decade before he truly cemented his place as a Hollywood A-lister: playing the infamous serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, regarded by many critics as one of the greatest film villains of all-time. The role won him the first of his two Oscars, with the second coming for his performance in the 2020 film ‘The Father'.But the 87-year-old's long journey to the very top was not only a professional struggle, but at times a personal struggle too, having also battled alcoholism early on in his career - which he says made him a difficult person to work with.Thank you to the Culture team for their help in making this programme. It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and, despite Andrew being a big fibber and not showing up, they manage a solid episode. They talk about Alice in Borderland, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, The Four Seasons, Peacemaker Season 2, and The Queen of Versailles. Much like you, we thought that a week off would give Andrew time to come back to us, but oh no… So Lauren is left to kick off the show to talk about the latest season of Alice in Borderland. In a way, it's more of the same, but that's not necessarily a good thing, based on how the previous season ended. There are some fun games, but this feels like a cash grab by Netflix, which leaves a bad taste in Lauren's mouth. Speaking of things on Netflix that aren't delicious… Kevin watched Monster: The Ed Gein Story, so you don't have to. If you don't know, Ed Gein is the inspiration for characters like Norman Bates, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Hannibal Lecter. Unfortunately, this telling of his story is so over the top and over-sensationalized, that it's just really hard to watch. And not in the fun, “this horror movie is so scary” kind of way. Funny enough, Charlie Hunnam does do a great job of becoming this character. The overall presentation is just lacking. Because they apparently only have Netflix to watch this week, Lauren discusses the new show The Four Seasons. It has a start studded cast, including Will Forte, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Colman Domingo. It's a show about these 4 characters and their significant others and the way their relationship all ebb and flow over the course of 4 separate seasons. It's touching at times, and funny at times, and all in all, Lauren enjoyed it enough to be interested in the upcoming season 2. Finally, escaping the prison that is Netflix, Kevin hops over to HBO to discuss the second (and final?) season of Peacemaker. It's a monumental growth season for Peacemaker, as he has some immense issues to deal with. Where this show shines this season is when we get to see all of the trials and tribulations and just how broken he is through it all. And then the way the season ends for him is just wild. And there are some incredible things set up for the future of the DCU going forward, so if you aren't aware, listen to this bit, as Kevin breaks some of them down. Lauren closes out the show by outclassing Kevin and heading over to Broadway. She managed to get tickets to the preview of The Queen of Versailles, starring Kristin Chenoweth. The book is by the creator of Wicked and with Chenoweth in tow, that sounds like a masterpiece waiting to happen, right? Well, maybe not… Lauren breaks down some of the issues with the show and her surprise at how underwhelmed she was. It still has time to level out, though, and it could become something special still. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! When you think of evil, characters like Hannibal Lecter, the Joker, and Michael Myers probably come to mind. But what is evil really? Evil can take different forms: sadistic and brutal, but it can also be boring and normalized. During the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, political philosopher Hannah Arendt reported on the trial for the New Yorker Magazine. Her journalism became incredibly controversial due to her account of Eichmann, viewing him as “banal,” “normal,” and a “clown.” Learn about the “banality of evil,” what it means, how it can be used to interpret Nazi Germany, and its controversy on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
