This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 19th of May and here are the headlines.1. Supreme Court Rejects Minister's Apology Over Remarks on Colonel Sofiya QureshiThe Supreme Court on Monday rejected Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah's apology over offensive remarks allegedly directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The court ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter and stayed Shah's arrest until a status report is submitted on May 28. Criticizing Shah, the bench said, “The entire nation is ashamed.” Shah made controversial comments during a speech near Mhow, indirectly referencing Qureshi. The SIT, to be led by an IG-rank officer, must be formed by 10 am Tuesday, per SC instructions.2. India Foils Drone, Missile Attack on Golden Temple by PakistanThe Indian Army revealed Monday that Pakistan attempted a drone and missile strike on Amritsar's Golden Temple and cities across Punjab on May 7–8, following Indian strikes on terrorist camps under Operation Sindoor. At a press event in Amritsar, the Army displayed debris from intercepted drones and missiles. Indian air defense systems, including upgraded L-70 guns and AKASH missiles, neutralized the threats. Officials emphasized the target was religious and civilian sites, underlining Pakistan's retaliatory intent following India's counter-terrorism operation inside Pakistani territory and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.3. BCCI Pulls Out of ACC Events Amid India-Pakistan TensionsAmid escalating India-Pakistan tensions, the BCCI has decided to withdraw from upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments, including the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup and Men's Asia Cup. The ACC is currently chaired by Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, which sources say contributed to India's decision. The move reflects India's intent to diplomatically isolate Pakistan's cricket board. The decision could impact the Asia Cup's feasibility, given the financial weight India brings to global cricket events. Sponsors and broadcasters may also reconsider deals if India stays out of the tournament.4. Bengaluru Faces Waterlogging After Year's Heaviest RainfallHeavy rain lashed Bengaluru for over six hours on Sunday night, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. Residents described it as the most intense rainfall of the year. Kengeri recorded the highest with 132 mm, according to the Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Cell. The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert' for the week, warning of more rain. Traffic police issued advisories for areas in northern Bengaluru including New Bel Road, Yelahanka Circle, Nagawara, and Allalasandra, as commuters dealt with long delays and flooded roads.5. Former President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Advanced Prostate CancerFormer U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office confirmed Sunday. Doctors reported a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating metastasis to the bones, but added that the cancer appears hormone-sensitive, offering some treatment hope. Biden, who left office in January, is undergoing evaluations for further management. Global leaders, including Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their support. Biden's diagnosis adds a personal and public health dimension to the global conversation on cancer awareness. That's all for today. This was the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Türkiye welcomes Russia-Ukraine peace talks President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to resume Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Istanbul on May 15, expressing Türkiye's readiness to host negotiations. In Sunday's phone call, Erdogan and Putin discussed bilateral ties, energy projects and regional issues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his attendance. Erdogan also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, stressing cooperation for peace. US President Donald Trump, on the other hand, urged Ukraine to accept Putin's proposal immediately. Russian and Ukrainian officials met in Istanbul in 2022 to discuss ongoing conflict. Hamas to release US-Israeli captive as Washington criticises Israel Hamas announced it will release 21-year-old US-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander as part of direct ceasefire talks with the US. The Palestinian resistance group linked his release to the reopening of aid crossings. Trump welcomed the move as a gesture of goodwill towards Washington and mediators Egypt and Qatar. Meanwhile, Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing his government of prolonging the Gaza war and stalling hostage deals, during a meeting with Israeli families. Israel has killed over fifty-two-thousand-eight-hundred Palestinians in its genocidal war on Gaza since October 2023. Pakistan provides details of its strikes on Indian targets Pakistan claimed to have struck 26 Indian military sites and deployed drones over major Indian cities, including New Delhi, in recent fighting, as both nuclear-armed rivals observe a cautious cessation of hostilities since Saturday. Pakistan also said it had downed five Indian jets. The Indian Air Force acknowledged losses without giving details but confirmed that all pilots had returned safely. Reuters reported three jet crashes in India-administered Kashmir. Despite the ceasefire, border residents remain displaced, while cities such as Jammu and Amritsar remained subdued amid ongoing security concerns. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump stated that the US would work with India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute. Severe flooding in DRC leaves 62 dead, dozens missing Severe flooding in the Democratic Republic of Congo's South Kivu province has claimed at least 62 lives, with 50 people still missing. The deluge, triggered by torrential rains, struck at 5 am local time on Friday, flooding Kasaba village in the Ngandja sector. Search efforts are hampered by damaged infrastructure and communication breakdowns, with only the Red Cross assisting. It followed the recent flooding in Kinshasa that killed 33 people. The region is already grappling with ongoing conflict with rebels, further complicating the humanitarian response. Trump declares 'total reset' in US-China relations US President Donald Trump announced a ""very good meeting"" on trade with Chinese officials in Switzerland, claiming a ""total reset"" in US-China relations. The talks, which began in Geneva on Saturday, resumed on Sunday. The US delegation, led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, met with Vice Premier He Lifeng of China. The negotiations are the first face-to-face talks since both nations imposed trade tariffs.

Shuchi Kapila, Postmemory and the Partition of India: Learning to Remember (Palgrave MacMillan, 2024) Dr. Shuchi Kapila, Professor of English at Grinnell College, has a new book that explores the India/Pakistan Partition in 1947 through the lens of memory, generational conversation and inheritance. Postmemory and the Partition of India: Learning to Remember is most clearly focused on this idea of how we learn to remember the past, particularly the complexities of a past that includes trauma and violence along with independence and hope. This book, part of the Palgrave MacMillan series on Memory Studies, examines these ideas of memory and nostalgia and how they have shaped the cultural and political understanding of Partition in India, but also in the diaspora. Kapila starts with her own lived experiences, recalling bits of stories her mother told of her life before Partition. This is the path that Postmemory and the Partition of India continues along, as Kapila notes that the memories of Partition are fragmented, are communicated in bits, often in a non-linear way. Thus, the memories themselves were not fully communicated to the children of those who experienced Partition, and this generation of children, now adults, are reflecting on their own inheritance from Partition, even though they themselves did not live through it. Part of the focus in Learning to Remember is drawing out this approach to remembering—what is it that the traumatized generation passed along, even unknowingly, to their children. The transfer of more than 12 million people without much planning or organization, in context of the British removal of colonial power from the Asian subcontinent, and the establishment of independent India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, were all jarring events, leaving individuals stateless, or newly engulfed in nation-states that had not previously existed. Families were separated, women were abducted, violence and displacement all dominated this period—and for those who lived through it, it was not necessarily contextualized by a state power committing crimes against particular populations, as was the case in the Holocaust, or the Apartheid regime in South Africa, or the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Thus, the responses that happened in regard to these events, with the Nuremburg Trials, or the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, did not happen in the same way in terms of Partition. Kapila explores different avenues that have been developing to rectify some of this missing memory of Partition. She does interviews with those who experienced Partition and she also interviews her generational contemporaries, examining how different generations have essentially experienced Partition and also how they have learned to remember this assaultive experience that is also the foundation of independent nation-states. This is the thrust of the first half of the book—these intergenerational conversations and understandings of Partition. The second half of the book looks more closely at the two physical spaces that have been established to communicate about Partition. These two physical spaces include the Berkeley, California 1947 Partition Archive, which now contains at least 10,000 oral histories of Partition, available for researchers, scholars, and individuals to explore and examine. India has also recently opened the Partition Museum, Amritsar, the first museum of its kind in India. Museums tend to craft particular narratives of events or experiences, and Kapila considers this new museum, and how it is participating in that narrative design, while also engaging with critiques and analysis of the newly established museum, which opened in 2017. The youngest of the world's seven largest religions is Sikhism, founded in Punjab in the 16th century. Nanak, a guru, or teacher, from outside Lahore, spent three days lost along a river and returned with an undestanding of one God: the Ultimate Reality. Nanak created a religion founded on equality, service, and openness, yet his successors would soon find themselves under attack from vested interests, particularly the Mughal Empire. In this episide, we visit the Golden Temple, or Harmandir Sahib, their holiest shrine. It is a brilliantly gorgeous golden temple surrounded by a tranquil pool, visited by a steady stream of devoted Sikhs. We'll recount some of the challenges the Sikhs have faced, challenges which have made them fiercely willing to defend their people and their faith. And of course, we'll include that most famous Punjabi dish: tandoori chicken, or at least as close as we can come without an actual tandoor!

Those who know Fareed Zakaria through his weekly column or CNN show may he surprised to learn he considers books the important way he can put new ideas in the world. But Fareed's original aspiration was to be an academic, and it was a chance lunch with Walter Isaacson that convinced him to apply for a job as editor of Foreign Affairs instead of accepting an assistant professorship at Harvard. His latest book, Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present is a testament to his enduring passion for ideas and his belief in the importance of classical liberalism in an age of increasing populism and authoritarianism. Tyler sat down with Fareed to discuss what he learned from Khushwant Singh as a boy, what made his father lean towards socialism, why the Bengali intelligentsia is so left-wing, what's stuck with him from his time at an Anglican school, what's so special about visiting Amritsar, why he misses a more syncretic India, how his time at the Yale Political Union dissuaded him from politics, what he learned from Walter Isaacson and Sam Huntington, what put him off academia, how well some of his earlier writing as held up, why he's become focused on classical liberal values, whether he had reservations about becoming a TV journalist, how he's maintained a rich personal life, and more.
