Welcome to The Daily, where we go through the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. We are approaching the end of Ecclesiastes, and the Gospel of Mark is next. Go to the website and grab the Scriptural Journal for this study so you can study along with us. If you are a donor who gives $35/month or more, you will receive one of these for free each time we begin a new study, as long as we have your current mailing address. You also get a few more benefits by becoming a monthly or annual donor, like video access to the website, and you can see all those benefits at the link in the description today. Either way, get your Scripture Journal now so you can take notes and follow along. Today, we're looking at Ecclesiastes 11:7-8: Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity. — Ecclesiastes 11:7-8 Life is a gift. Solomon reminds us to enjoy it—to see the light, feel the warmth, and enjoy the good days. There's something sacred about the simplicity of a sunrise, a shared meal, or a laugh with a friend. These are glimpses of God's goodness in a world that often feels heavy. But Solomon adds a sobering reminder: "The days of darkness will be many." Life has darkness. Seasons of loss. Moments of grief. Times when the light isn't so visible. And we shouldn't be surprised when they come. Still, the contrast makes the sun sweeter. The joy of life isn't found in pretending the dark days don't exist—but in choosing to rejoice while we can. Not in a shallow, Instagram-worthy way—but in a deep, grounded gratitude that sees every moment as grace. The call here is to live with balance. Rejoice fully. Remember frankly. Don't cling to the delusion that life will always be easy. But don't grow so cynical that you miss the beauty right before you. Savor the good gifts of God today. And who prepare your hearts to trust God when the shadows fall tomorrow. #LifeIsAGift, #Ecclesiastes11, #DailyDevotional ASK THIS: What simple joys has God placed in your life recently? How do you respond when the dark days come? In what ways can you practice grounded gratitude today? Are you living with a healthy balance of rejoicing and remembering? DO THIS: Today, pause and savor one good gift from God—a sunrise, a smile, or a moment of stillness. PRAY THIS: Father, help me rejoice in the light and prepare my heart for the shadows. Teach me to see each moment as grace from You. Amen. PLAY THIS: Fountains + Came To My Rescue.

There is a reason Judas and the crowd came to arrest Jesus at night; they didn't want anyone to see their actions. Even in the midst of this dark moment, Jesus speaks to the shadows, casting light into the darkness. How can we be a people that brings light to the shadows of our lives? This message is taught from using the passage of Luke 22:47-53.
Friends, it is far better to imitate God and walk in love. Listen in to hear more
John 1:5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. I'm not sure whether this is an encouragement today as much as it is a reality we need to be aware of as we live to love with Jesus. Not everyone is going to understand or embrace the love of Jesus. I suggested yesterday that Jesus is life; His life is the light of the world, and the light of His life is love. John informed his readers of the relationship of Jesus' light to the domain of darkness. The light of His love is incomprehensible to those who are in darkness. Later in John's gospel, he wrote that God judged the world by shining His light. John 3:19-20. “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” So we should understand that if we love someone who is in darkness, they are not going to recognize it as love. In fact, they probably will hate you for it because it exposes their lack of love for people and their love for the darkness. This highlights this sobering reality. One has to be rescued from the darkness in order to be able to see the shining light of God's love. Now we come to the encouragement today. If you understand God's love, His glory, which shines in the face of Christ, then you have been rescued and saved out of the domain of darkness. Listen/read what Paul wrote to the Colossians in chapter 1:13-14 and rejoice in God's love for you. “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” And again in 2 Corinthians 4:6, "For God, who said, 'Light shall shine out of darkness,' is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ." Therefore, as we live to love with Jesus, we can know that if anyone recognizes His love in us, it is because God either is rescuing or has rescued them from darkness. His life in us, shining His love in and through us, is still judging the world. As He puts people in our paths, we can watch where God is working and where He is not as we boldly love and proclaim the gospel that God rescues people out of darkness through faith in Jesus Christ, His Son. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? In this episode, we delve into a haunting tale that grapples with the concept of morality and consequence, essentially asking the question: what are we willing to sacrifice for wealth and success? The narrative introduces us to Sir Dominic Sarsfield, a once-illustrious character fallen into despair, who encounters an enigmatic figure that offers him a tempting bargain. We explore themes of desperation, temptation, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness as Sir Dominic weighs his soul against the allure of riches and glory. We journey through Sir Dominic's life, filled with revelry and excess, as he revels in a world of parties, wine, and lavish living. However, his fortune takes a turn when his vices lead him down a precarious path, pushing him toward a fateful decision. By meeting with an otherworldly being in the depths of the renowned Maroa Wood, Sarsfield finds himself ensnared in a deal with unforeseen ramifications. Each moment of frivolity is juxtaposed with the haunting reality of potential loss, as Sir Dominic is urged to consider what will happen when the clock strikes midnight on the final day of February. As the pact unfolds, we witness the gradual corruption of Sir Dominic's character and the toll that his choices take on both his own life and the lives of those around him. The supernatural element is woven seamlessly into the narrative, illustrating the folly of seeking shortcuts to happiness and the dire consequences of forgetting one's moral compass. The tension builds as the deadline looms, culminating in a breakdown of trust and sanity amidst a backdrop of revelry and dread.Ultimately, the story serves as a chilling reminder of the fragility of life and wealth, emphasizing that no amount of gold can shield one from the gravity of their choices. Listeners are left reflecting on the value of integrity versus the seductive nature of temptation, and the ultimate fate that befalls those who seek gain at the expense of their soul. As the chilling conclusion reveals the inescapable consequences of Sir Dominic's decisions, we are compelled to consider our own choices within this timeless tale of old-world terror.

It is difficult to comprehend the darkness to which we are accustomed. However, when a significant light is present, then the contrast becomes clear. Jesus was and is the light of the world. He is the contrast. There is nothing else like Him.
We don't know when Jesus will come again, but when He does return it will be a different experience for those who are in the Light and those who remain in the darkness of sin.

Sometimes the light and darkness in me collide.
"Light And Darkness" Pastor Charles Lenn November 3, 2024.WAV by Tuscaloosa First Assembly
In Bereishis 1:3-5, the Torah describes the creation of light and the separation between light and darkness. Rashi explains this according to pshat and agadda. This episode analyzes both of these explanations.
As we being the "" series, we explore John 3:16-21, where Jesus is revealed as the light that stepped into darkness. This passage highlights a crucial decision: will we live in the light of Christ, or will we continue to hide in darkness because of sin? We'll discuss how the pursuit of "hidden knowledge" by the Gnostics parallels today's culture, where many seek enlightenment within themselves, but Jesus teaches us that true light and life are found in Him alone. As we walk through these themes, we will confront the ways we may live comfortably in the world's darkness, even while professing faith, and how stepping into the light requires bringing every part of our lives—our struggles, sins, and desires—before God. This message calls us to reject the false promises of self-realization and worldly pleasures to embrace the new life offered by Jesus, the true light of the world.

Our late book club episode for May about "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny. "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny is a science fiction/fantasy novel that blends elements of Egyptian mythology with a futuristic setting. AKA the origin of the sentiment that too many dicks spoil the soup. Did we love it? Was it readable? Was it's highly praised rich imagery (a man burns off his own dick with a red hot robot hand so...) and non linear narrative worth it? Did we find it though provoking or rage inducing? Could we find anything nice to say at all?I'll let you guess but you can and should just go ahead and listen to the episode to find out. The impact of light bulbs on cities like New York and Paris at the turn of the twentieth century and the way modernist poets like Mina Loy and Lola Ridge depicted this, is at the heart of research being done by Dr Nicoletta Asciuto. For this New Thinking conversation hosted by Dr Sophie Coulombeau, she joins Dr Jaqueline Yallop, whose book Into the Dark looks at living in dark places and at experiences including "sundowning" - experienced by some people diagnosed with dementia, this is a change in behaviour that occurs in the evening, around dusk as darkness grows, causing agitation and anxiety. When Jacqueline Yallop's father was diagnosed with dementia, he began experiencing exactly that, which prompted Jacqueline's profound self-reflection on the world's relationship to the dark. Dr Jacqueline Yallop is an award-winning author of fiction and creative non-fiction, and her book Into the Dark explores darkness in science, literature, art, philosophy and history. She teaches creative writing at Aberystwyth University. Dr Nicoletta Asciuto is a Senior Lecturer in Modern Literature at the University of York. She is currently working on her first monograph, Brilliant Modernism: Cultures of Light and Modernist Poetry, 1909-1930 which discusses the impact of new lighting technologies on the birth of new avant-garde and modernist poetics. Dr Sophie Coulombeau is an author and academic based at the University of York, and was chosen as a 2014 New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by the BBC and AHRC to put research on the radio. This New Thinking episode of the Arts and Ideas podcast was made in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, part of UKRI.
