In this final episode of Season One for the podcast, your hosts Parker and Brandon look back at the TTRPG Systems the table has explored: D&D 5th Edition, Fate Accelerated, Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition, and The One Ring 2nd Edition. They discuss their personal plans during the break, which systems they personally enjoyed the most, how each system offers something fun and unique, and how diverse tabletop-role playing really is. They also answer a great question from a listener: which mechanics did you not get to explain well? Sunday's SCP Containment Breach with Duskmire had to be canceled due to a drop out but will be run again next Sunday, with more players needed. In this episode, your hosts Parker and Brandon wrap up their exploration of the Fate Accelerated tabletop roleplaying system with some parting thoughts, final impressions, and overall grade of this particular system. They discuss the true nature of chaotic neutral characters, answer fan submitted questions, talk about the difficulty of finding players when trying out new TTRPG systems, and something about a horror mystery adventure at Disneyland?? Overall, the final grade for this system was passing, and they look forward to trying out the full version in the Fate Core system! In this overdue episode, your hosts Parker and Brandon dive right back into the Fate Accelerated TTRPG system by focusing their conversation from the point of view of the Game Master, or GM, who runs the session and table. Similar to a Dungeon Master for D&D, the Game Master for Fate is slightly different for a different system. Parker and Brandon talk about those slight differences (and similarities) with D&D, discuss how well Christian did as a GM for the players in our recent one-shot (Spoilers for A Mysterious Christmas Carol one-shot adventure), and... how dad jokes make hilarious mediums for Vicious Mockery?? Be sure to listen to our one-shot adventure "A Mysterious Christmas Carol" beforehand! You can follow Nat 1 Nerds on Facebook (Nat 1 Nerds) and Instagram (@nat1nerdspodcast) for more content. In Part 2 of this special Holiday adventure with Improv Tabletop's Christian Randall and Ned Wilcock, our hero's Sam, Deggy, and Whatsly found a woman who seemed to recognize them as the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future while observing the funeral of their murdered haunt. However, no one has been able to see them before as they travel through the timestream searching for clues. What does this mean? Is she involved somehow? If so, how and why? It's as though someone knew these ghosts were coming beforehand... Will our reluctant ghosts Sam the psychic, Deggy the mailman, and Whatsly the accountant be able to solve the murder? In this afternoon livestream we, as usual, cover some of the more pressing headlines of the last day or two, talk some current events, Rich stops on by and we have a discussion about patriotism, another podcaster and just some general back and forth. Rich, Xhartos and myself with Glenn from RCS (who eventually stops in) have a long discussion about our upcoming go at playing some Fate Accelerated in a livestream and I geek out on explaining to them the nature of the system and some of the rulesets since Rich was wholly unfamiliar and Xhartos is a D&D player from way back. So look forward to that coming soon as well! Also I had a technical error on my part as I didn't record the USB track that handles the call ins but I have a backup for that sort of situation so no worries. :) Proudly Radical Intro -MLK Jr. Speech on Racial and Economic Injustice -Daniel Birch - One Man
### The danger of preparing too little or too much (1:20) Unless you are a both a very veteran GM and a professional improviser, you should prepare, and even if you are - preparing things will help you raise the level of your game. ### General advice (4:10) Always be ready to throw everything away at a moment notice. GM prep is like a battle plan, it rarely survives an encounter with the players. Done is better than perfect (AKA perfect is the enemy of done). Prep contributes only a certain percent to the experience. The prep you THINK matters most might not be the best use of your time. The players don't know what was planned. After a game, the GM is usually the only one who remembers their GM ‘mistakes'. Players usually only remember the general experience. So take it easy, eh? ### How Uri prepare (11:00) Is this a campaign or a one shot? What is the mechanic? (high crunch or low crunch and GM build vs collaborative build) Is there a specific meaning/theme/idea I wish to convey? One-shots are less forgiving since you usually have less time and you can't extend things. For mechanics heavy games I try to prepare the mechanical elements, but I try to make life easy for myself with a few cheats: * Prepare stat blocks with everything pre-generated (stats after boosts etc, many general pre-gen adventures will have these as well). * I prefer to write the general battle plans before the battle. * Reskin known monsters. I LOVE trolls and goblins, half of the encounters I ran were with trolls and goblins but they are never actually trolls and goblins. I simply reuse stats and select new reasons for the regeneration. In collaborative games, like my current Fate Accelerated campaign I prefer to focus less on the plot and in stead focus on creating locations and NPCs. Maybe have a general idea or the barest of plots.
