One of our favourite moments was when she walked us through her favourite fossil - an Elpistostege - a predatory fishapod from a famous site in Quebec that Alice then helped image using high-powered X-rays. The x-rays revealed finger bones, hidden inside a fish's fin, that are anatomically equivalent to your own. How good!And we get the full story of Materpiscis, the pregnant fish with a fossilised embryo and umbilical cord still intact, whose species name is Attenborough (yes, the Sir David...). Check out our notes below:The Peak: Hey, Peak pals, we are joined today with Chad Koziel, who's the associate vice president of Layer Six Gen AI delivery at TD. And we're going to have a really interesting discussion today. There's a lot of talk about Gen AI and how transformative it's going to be, but not a lot of discussion around the actual practical applications of that at the organization level. So that's why I'm really excited to jump in with you today, Chad. Do you want to just take a second and introduce yourself?​Chad: Thanks and it's great to be on here, Brett. So I'm Chad Koziel. I build AI. That's what I do. I make it real. I put it in clients' hands and colleagues' hands. And my job is to do so in a way that they love, in a way that they want to engage with, they want to adopt, they want to play with and that ultimately drives a positive impact for them.​The Peak: That's awesome. And I imagine a lot of this is happening behind the scenes. So how is AI working at TD right now without clients even knowing that it's there?​Chad: So, if you're a TD client, you can expect today that if you call in with an issue, you get helped better, you get helped faster than ever before. You may or may not notice it on a call-by-call basis, but it's there. In the background and across TD, AI capabilities are being deployed to make everything simpler, to make everything faster and specifically to get information to people faster. So that concrete example I gave you, in the background, there's a tool, a virtual assistant that allows a frontline colleague to solve an extremely complex customer query in seconds, empowering them to help you in that moment. Whereas in the past, they might have put you on hold while they looked stuff up. They might instead have put you on hold and contacted one of their colleagues who could help them work through it before coming back to you. So we're seeing a 12% reduction in those types of things. And it's not just in our contact center. So we have these fit-to-purpose, fast, accurate virtual assistants deployed in TD wealth, in branches, in insurance and TD securities. All of these driving, perhaps imperceptible, perhaps perceptible, but nevertheless impactful improvements to the client experience.​The Peak: That's a really great case study of how generative AI is helping TD clients and as a TD client myself, that's really great to hear. There's a lot of excitement about this technology, but there are some fears as well about it. You know, Gen AI is here and it's brought a lot of concerns with it about how our lives and jobs are going to change. What do you tell someone who's more concerned than excited about the impact of generative AI?​Chad: What I described previously in contact centers is the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot that I have the privilege of having a front row seat to that I can't share publicly, but the impact is enormous, it's profound. And that's leading to companies and people in every sector, in every field to adopt AI, generative AI to improve the quality, speed and availability of service. So maybe, you know, in this conversation with this concerned person, I would then say, seek it out, play, toy with generative AI. Just as an example, like I've used it to dramatically change my reading habits, like in volume and complexity by feeding it things I liked, things I didn't and using Gen AI to take me off the beaten path into areas I may not have previously read from. Authors who are maybe terrific but didn't sell, geographies outside of a western-centric sort of award circuit. And that's a toy example, right? But this is the kind of thing somebody can do to gain some familiarity with it, maybe even comfort. At TD, we put trust at the center of our relationship with clients. And when we move forward with AI, we will do so responsibly, transparently, reliably, safely, all of those things. That's how I try to bring some of this comfort to somebody maybe a little concerned about generative AI.​The Peak: That's very helpful. And you mentioned it at the end there, but I would love to just dig into how TD is actually keeping AI safe and secure when handling clients' money and personal information.​Chad: That's a great question. First is we don't use AI to handle your money. So AI is probabilistic, it's guessing things and we don't guess where your money should go and frankly no algorithm at TD should do that. You decide where it goes. We might use AI, we will use AI to make it easier for you to do what you want to do with your money. And we should make it a lot easier for you. We will never do it for you. Now, the personal information angle though is pretty interesting. When TD's AI consumes your information, it's in a cloud vault in an area fully and completely controlled by TD that's not accessible to any of our outside partners. And that's not going to change. We are going to protect that information and the handling of that information in a way that preserves your trust. And related to that, like when we do go and use AI, we're going to try to build that in a way that's remarkably human. So as an example, ensuring that empathy, intuition, care are at the heart and frankly quantitatively evaluated so that we know, not just we think, we know that the experience we're giving you with AI is one that you can trust is doing that in a way that feels right to you. The last key point because it's an area of particular focus and one where we have a bunch of research is around trustworthy AI. So TD, we have an entire team of scientists dedicated to evaluating for privacy, security, fairness, accountability, explainability, and not just ensuring that those are all built into the models, to the AI that we release, but also to ensure that that is continuously monitored so that those AIs do not stray over time, giving us the confidence to put them into market and have them be in the hands of our customers and colleagues.​The Peak: That's really great to hear and very comforting. Now, we know that AI is going to change banking for Canadians, but what parts of the experience will always need a human touch even as this technology evolves so quickly?​Chad: So, a concrete example, let's call it the estates process. So you've just had a terrible loss in your family. And not only do you have a terrible loss, you're dealing with an incredibly complex situation, financially, legally, emotionally. I guarantee you you want somebody sitting across from you helping you through that. But what you want is for that person to be able to work through this quickly with you to not take days or weeks to sort through hundreds of pages of documents. You want them to be able to do that in minutes to give you that trusted advice right away and with their human touch, with empathy, with intuition. That's an example, but we can think of a bunch of similar sort of challenging events, right? Whether it's job loss, retirement planning, thinking of buying a home. You're always going to want a person there and what we feel is that that person will, however, ne...

ORIGINAL EPISODE DESCRIPTION: On this CLAMMY AND FISHY BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY from November 2025, Feliks Banel (clam)digs into the audio archives to tell the twisted tale of the Ivar's Billboard Hoax, aka "Underwatergate." Though, once you've listened, it may have you wondering if there was ever hoax at all, or if it was actually some kind of elaborate coverup. In 2009, Seattle-based Ivar's seafood restaurants released a series of videos documenting the search for and discovery of UNDERWATER BILLBOARDS in Puget Sound. As the story goes, they were placed in the 1950s by restaurateur and showman Ivar Haglund to reach burgeoning submarine traffic. The 2009 undersea search was all very exciting, and many were completely hooked. But then, Jim Dever, with KING 5's Evening Magazine at the time - and still a great friend of CASCADE OF HISTORY - had the exclusive exposé, produced in cooperation with Ivar's, and featuring Ivar's CEO Bob Donegan. As Dever's report made it seem, the whole thing was a brilliant stunt that fooled a lot of people - but it angered a few, too, who thought Ivar's had gone too far. Fast forward to November 2015, and naïve history radio correspondent Feliks Banel set out to tell the backstory with help from Paul Dorpat. Dorpat is a beloved historian - and friend and biographer of Ivar - who had served as official historian of the vintage underwater billboard hunt. When the hoax had been revealed in 2009, Dorpat – longtime author of the weekly “Now & Then” history column - was criticized by many, and even temporarily suspended by The Seattle Times for his role in the stunt. " Local Streamkeepers Christine and Cec Robinson are not so sure. They feel that the Management Plan misrepresents the situation on the ground in the quarry area. We are excited to present an intergenerational panel of talented filmmakers from the Cinema Systers Film Festival (@cinemasystersfilmfestival), the ONLY all-lesbian film festival in the United States, as they join Leigh for an inspirational discussion about finding “systerhood” and the power of sharing our stories in community.  Leigh speaks with Laura Petrie, the founder and producer of the CSFF, about planting her acorn by bringing her vision for a lesbian film festival to life in her beloved hometown of Paducah, Kentucky. Next, we hear from Nicole de Meneses (@darkrainbowfilms), a freelance writer, producer and director who was introduced to the CSFF through a documentary on the festival (available on Lesflicks). She has had several films now featured at the festival, including the mermaid romcom, Fishy, and the vampire horror short, Last Bite. Next up is Jennifer Trujillo, the Senior Managing Director of the Gilbert Baker Film Festival (@gilbertbakerfilmfest), who faced serious anxieties over trekking to Kentucky (and subsequently fell in love with Paducah) to represent Last Bite in 2025 as a Supporting Producer. Last but not least, we are joined by Krissy Mahan, a working class film maker (and lesbian of a certain age), who has been documenting our stories since the AIDS crisis of the late 80s and is now well-known for her “dykeumentaries”, a visual record of queer people living as themselves during times when the official record may not reflect that reality. At this year's festival, Krissy and Jenn will be leading a workshop titled "Accessibility is for Every Body”, aiming to liberate films from ableism from the pre-production stages forward. They dream of creating a cultural shift where films are truly accessible to all people regardless of their bodies' unique sensory inputs.  Together we can normalize our stories, break free of the patriarchal, homophobic, racist, ableist world we've inherited and celebrate one another while using film as a mechanism for thought experiments on how to create a better world where we can all survive. From watching poor families struggle while having an awakening at 12 years old that no one is coming to save you to building six businesses before turning 30, and why the brutal truth about entrepreneurship is that if a thought makes you nervous it's worth pursuing because people who fear money don't get it and the things that scare you the most are exactly where your success is hiding waiting for you to be brave enough to reach for it, the young man who spent time with his grandmother selling beads in Fishy past learning that her generation would work regardless of conditions for five cedis a day to provide for their families while his father's generation would work but could switch jobs and his generation resigns when things get uncomfortable and Gen Z doesn't want to work at all, the first among six siblings who got an awakening around 12 or 13 years old realizing that no one was coming to save his family so while his siblings stayed home to play he would go with his grandmother to sell beads the waist beads and king beads that she made into chains and wrist beads, the grandson whose grandma was the one with the money in the family making beads but also having farms and animals like pigs and sheep that people would buy bringing income and always taking him along to sell teaching him the foundation of business, the pattern that grandmas and entrepreneurs share something special because those who spend time with grandma like him and others become business people proving there's something about that generation that understood work and sacrifice, the 18 year old missionary who spent two years on the streets of Lagos in Nigeria asking himself what next and didn't really believe so much in school because that's not the only way to get educated realizing school is just one of the best ways but not the only way, the young man who turned his Christian mission work into personal life lessons learning that if he could convince a stranger to leave their church and join a new church that was a big skill he could use in business and life, the philosophy that the thought that makes you nervous before you do it is exactly what you should do because that thought that comes to your mind that makes you think so much you get scared of it that is it go for it, the wisdom that if you're asking yourself questions about that thing that thought that has awakened you saying I need to do this I need to do that don't be scared because that thought you are scared of is where your success is, the shark mentality that if you are going for your dreams you are the shark of the ocean and sharks bite fishes but that doesn't mean they're bad sharks that's what they are destined to be they need to survive, the line between being the shark and being a bad shark which is going for what you want the right way by utilizing the resources in terms of people around you to get what you want but the right way, the connector who knows person A has something and person B needs that thing so he gets it from person A and gives it to person B making both happy but gaining more than each of them because that's how you conquer, the choice between being a shark or a shrimp in this world because shrimps get eaten so you have to decide which one you want to be, the business starter who had zero money when he started but just had a vision and a dream and got people to give him money that he wasn't even sure would be a success because he found out the problems people have and provided solutions, the problem solver who understands that someone's problem is they have a lot of money and don't know what to do with it so you go find a solution to that person's problem because a person who provides solutions to problems is a successful person, the reality that all the successful people in the world have always provided solutions to problems without actually using their own resources it's just people they provide a solution to the problem someone has. Indeed, places like that are too easily overlooked. Many would tell you a history of Tidaline, Perpetua's Western Continent, focused only on its greatest kingdom, its most powerful church, and the invading armada that scourges its shores. And while Grand Sonnerie, the Holy Protectorate, and the Valte Empire have tried as hard as they can to control the chronicling of time, take it from this old historian: The smallest gust can usher in a hurricane.
