We talk with Frank Caeti about his recent experience directing The new Chicago ETC show "The Best Decision You've Ever Made", the first Second City show since the pandemic. Also some fun stories about touring with complainers (in a good way), taking a TV job, our mutual love of the Second City AND where we hope it's headed in the future.
This week on ACRS-TV, I go deep with powerhouse of hilarity, Frank Caeti of The Second City, MADtv, and one half of the sketch comedy duo, FrankenMatt. In this episode, Frank talks…well, frankly…about his career in comedy, the compassion of suffering, and the hard decisions and trade offs of being an artist and a family man. You'll learn the two most significant acts of Franks life where he leaned on his improv skills; listen to a story he retells from Bob Odenkirk that made me tear up; and find out what Frank does to take the reins of his own career. You'll want to watch this one until the very end—where the best stuff always is—as Frank takes us on a wild ride of balancing the comedic arts with the every day.________________________________More about Frank:Frank Caeti is a Chicago-area native who was discovered while performing for Second City, where he caught the eye of Sony Pictures Television, Saturday Night Live, and MADtv. Soon after, he was hired as cast member for Fox's MADtv, moved to Los Angeles and went on to appear in Modern Family, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Key and Peele, NCIS, and many other films and television shows. Frank was one half of the acclaimed comedy duo FrankenMatt with former SNL writer Matt Craig and has performed improv all over the world, from Bosnia, Kosovo and Germany to Shaghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong to Dallas, New York City, and back to Los Angeles. Known for his adept physical comedy, his theatrical reel is laugh-out-loud funny (and linked below). Like many theaters in Chicago, Second City shut down on March 13, 2020, the same day we were scheduled to chat with actor, writer, and improviser Frank Caeti, who was directing their current production. We kept our appointment and recorded this interview with the Second City alum anyway, thinking we'd post it once everything re-opened "in a few weeks". Ha! Nonetheless, enjoy this fascinating conversation about the process of creating a sketch show out of nothing, and listen as Frank shares Bull Durham analogies; how a director acts as a head writer; the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding; the value of group ownership; being patient as ideas go from half-baked to more fully-baked; embracing relative autonomy; gives shout-outs to institutional memory; the endurance required for encore late-night sets; the importance of audience feedback and the uncertainty of not knowing when we might get it again; and finally, the challenge of getting used to not touching your face and how philosophers are really the forgotten victims during this pandemic. Survivors emerge from the cardboard debris and I've got an interview with Frank Caeti who plays Boom Operator.
Frank Caeti and Rachel Romanski adopted their son in April of this year. This amazing yet bittersweet moment came after fostering him for about a year and a half, which came after innumerable hours of trainings and interviews of becoming certified to foster and adopt, which came after years of conversation about family and planning. In this podcast, we talk through this lengthy process, because in Frank and Rachel's opinion, there was immense value in the process. The time that it took, the questions that were asked and connections that were made with others during this time, were all pivotal parts of the process—and they wouldn't change a thing. If fostering-to-adopt has ever been a consideration for your family of if you'd simply like to learn more about the process, Frank and Rachel walk us through the step by step and their opinions, surprises and lessons learned from all of it.
