Katie Caussin is the new director of the 40 year old iO theater in Chicago. She is an actress, improviser, director and actor who has a 30 year career in improv. We talked about what she loves about improv and why she is passionate about it. One of her favorite experiences was being in Comedy Sportz and touring with them. She believes that Comedy Sportz gave her the best training to be an improviser. One of her experiences was on tour when members of her team shaved their heads! She thought about going bald herself but eventually kept her lovely locks. She shared the history of iO and the incredible improvisers who came out of their school. Katie is a warm and generous person and I felt like I'd known her for years. I know you'll love her as much as I do!

The first thing my guest, Paul Schmidt, would like you to know about him, is that as a single dad, his teenage son, Robbie, is his world and his reason for everything. Which is incredibly endearing considering the level of success he's attained in a variety of professional and creative endeavors. Perhaps his success is due to being cast at the age of six in the role of “God” in his school play and that has “anointed” his efforts ever since. For years Paul would continue his Thespian pursuits acting in just about anything he could, which in 1980's Baltimore meant musicals, as he performed in over 20 of them before he turned 18. Once he was out of college, he pursued a successful career in broadcasting, and started on-air at 98 Rock in Baltimore, and eventually went on-air full-time at WRDX in Wilmington, DE for almost a decade. Adding to his performance repertoire, Paul did stand-up comedy and owned and operated Christina's Comedy Zone at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino for 3 years, which won Best Comedy Club in Delaware Today Magazine. He also did a year of improv in the Baltimore troupe of ComedySportz. For the past 25 years, Paul has poured his stage and on-camera acting experience into commercial and corporate voiceover work, and voicing for hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses via explainer videos, e-learning, corporate training, medical narration, and audiobooks. As a community builder and business coach, Paul created the VO Freedom Master Plan, a voiceover marketing program designed to generate consistent opportunities for voice actors to book work, and the VO Pro Community, a private, professional, global community created to meet the needs of voice actors and audiobook narrators who want to take their careers to the next level. Joining me from Richmond, VA, Paul is an avid sports fan, who loves playing golf with his son and refers to himself, among other things, as a “Golf Suckist”. Gillian Bellinger is a beloved improviser, teacher and actor. She founded the now thriving Misfit Improv and Acting School in Asheville, N.C. which just celebrated its one year anniversary. I had met Gillian during the pandemic with our mutual friend, Jay Sukow. We reconnected recently at the Sketch School with Marc Warzecha in Sketch 101 and I knew I wanted to know more about this very funny lady. We talk about growing up in Texas and how the improv bug got her. Gillian's resume is amazing. She has performed as an improviser and taught at Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater in Mission IMPROVable, Comedy Sportz. She is a SAG voiceover actor and has appeared in numerous commercials, TV and film. When asked why she named her new theater “Mifit” she told us. “A bit of a misfit lies in each of us. That unique part of our spirit that delights in play. We strive at Misfit to create that same kind of place, a place to belong, to connect, to create and be a misfit.” Gillian is a generous and brilliant person and I for one am looking forward to visiting her in Asheville! https://www.misfitavl.com

The Marvelous Michelle J. Gilliam Michelle Gilliam is a beautiful person-inside and out! We have been friends for several years and I was delighted to have her as a guest. Michelle grew up in Milwaukee in a loving and supportive family. During one family gathering, at age 4, she got her first big laugh and knew what her path would be! She met Dick Chudnow, founder of Comedy Sportz Milwaukee, the first CS theatre in this country, he let her volunteer until she was old enough to work there! She did tasks like writing 300 name tags, with the benefit of watching lots of shows. A great way to learn and eventually teach! She was so inspired by Comedy Sportz, she created an improv team in high school, held auditions and created a team she loved to play with. We talked about her experience being a black woman in the improv world and how that affected her growth as a person and coach. Today her improv career takes her all over the country and the world. Michelle is now based in Los Angeles, CA and works as an improviser, actor, host, voice actor, and the Owner and Artistic Director of Improv MKE, an improv comedy school and theater based online, currently serving the world. Trivia We are so excited to have such incredible talented guests on this episode. ComedySportz star and Evanston Block Party Thrower Kat Gotsick teams up with David Flora as team Go Big or Go Blue as they go up against Pat Dwyer and Zach Thompson who you can see on MST3K. Russ Friedewald, the founder of Trivia Workshop hosts this show. How would you hold up against them with questions like: Originating in Baja California, tacos de camarones are typically stuffed with lettuce, pico de gallo, avocado, cream, and what other ingredient, described as “the fruit of the sea” in a 1986 Winston Groom novel and its 1994 film adaptation? Mathematically equivalent to the "Three Prisoner Problem", the now well-known probability puzzle first posed by statistician Steve Selvin in 1975 is commonly known by a name that references what game show host? The songs "gold rush", "happiness", "cowboy like me", "mad woman", "betty", and "peace" are among the eleven tracks that earned Spotify's "explicit" tag on a pair of albums released by what artist in 2020? An old Teddy Roosevelt quote, "Keep your eyes on the stars, but your feet on the ground" was tweaked a bit in the 1970s by what disc jockey who used his version when signing off from his various radio and TV jobs over the next four decades? As you might be able to gather from its name, the stadium that hosted the home games for the New York Giants baseball team from 1891–1957 was built on a site previously used for what other sport? Founded in 1850 by a Scotsman who once foiled a plot to assassinate Lincoln, what company sued the band Weezer for trademark infringement the day before the release of their second studio album? Now a 33-year-old nurse, Maggie Goldenberger seems fine with the notoriety it brought her, but what author was confused and annoyed when he was asked about his part in the “ERMAHGERD” meme in 2012?
