Raven and Heidi discuss their thoughts on Justin Timberlake. The good, the bad, the suspicious. He has some specific.... rules for wife, Jessica Biel. Do you have any cell phone rules in your relationship?  Neighbors talk. You're closer to some, acquaintances with some. Raven has a bone to pick with his new neighbor. Actually, a few bones. His great neighborhood saw some new families recently. The discussion persists.  The Actor/Writer strike left our televisions deprived of new content for almost a year. Raven discusses with Heidi how there may just be another one creeping around the corner which may leave our favorite shows ending on a cliff hanger for good.  Milan Mania! The Croation and Australian cross country women's teams were chased down the finish line by a large shepherd. Messy breakups in the Olympic Village have the tea piping hot this year.  Raven and Heidi discuss the reality of Ring cameras after Raven experienced a huge chunk of ice fall on his head the moment before he stepped under his porch. Fortunately his ring caught the entire thing.  The new relationship trend circulating his men keeping notes on their significant others so they can remember the things they like. Raven calls his wife Alicia and puts his knowledge to the test to confirm his note taking works! Nathan was a jock in high school and college but now he's 6 months back from his second knee surgery and wants to play in the spring softball league. His wife, Elizabeth, is completely against this, she says she needs his help with the kids and she's not spending another 4 months taking care of him when he hurts himself again. It's time to hang it up! Can you tell your spouse when they're done with sports? Who's side are you on?  Kevin has a chance to win $2000! All he has to do is answer more pop culture questions than Raven in Can't Beat Raven!

Welcome to Season 6, Episode 01! Happy New Year! Our guest today is Peter Jae, a multi-hyphenate performer in Hollywood. Peter Jae is an actor, stunt performer, producer, and multidisciplinary creative with over two decades of experience working across film, television, and independent projects. Born in Brooklyn and raised primarily in the Bronx—with time spent in Queens as well—Peter grew up navigating identity as a Korean American in predominantly Black and Latinx neighborhoods. Those early experiences deeply shaped his worldview and continue to inform the stories he chooses to tell and the characters he brings to life. Before entering Hollywood, Peter pursued a wide range of creative paths. He attended a performing arts high school, studied menswear design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and even launched his own urban greeting-card business. That early blend of art, entrepreneurship, and storytelling set the tone for a career defined by versatility rather than a single lane. Although his first opportunities in Hollywood were focused on stunt work and action, he has expanded into more substantial acting roles, appearing in projects such as Blackhat, Olympus Has Fallen, and numerous television productions. He is especially recognized for his work in Ktown Cowboys, an Asian American–led project that allowed him to portray a multidimensional Korean American character—something he has long advocated for in an industry that often limits Asian men to narrow stereotypes. Most recently, Peter stars in The Workout, an independent action-driven film that blends physical intensity with psychological tension. The story centers on discipline, survival, and the personal battles that unfold when routine, control, and identity collide—both inside and outside the gym. The film highlights Peter's ability to merge his background in stunts with grounded dramatic performance, reinforcing his reputation as an actor who brings authenticity and depth to physically demanding roles. In this podcast, we catch up once again with actor, writer and filmmaker Hugh O'Conor, whose quasi-autobiographical comedy series Showkids - co-written with Amy Stephenson and Shane Langan - is available to watch on RTÉ. We talk with Hugh about his expansive career, from performance and working with the greats at a young age, to training at NYU, and his move into directing features, animation, and now this witty and heartfelt show. Showkids is set around a very special after-school drama class for talented kids, run by the brilliant but super-intimidating Miss Bethany Jessop (Amy De Bhrún). The show is seen through the eyes of 12-year-old Sam Curtain (Flynn Gray), whose constant daydreaming has begun to cause mayhem in his life. When his parents, Sally & Con (Philippa Dunne & Killian Sundermann), stumble across Miss Jessop's, they wonder if drama might be the perfect way to harness Sam's overly active imagination? An initially reluctant Sam soon realises he's discovered his tribe – other kids with equally vivid imaginations, inspired by Miss Jessop to use drama to help solve the problems they're going through in their own lives. As well as experiencing his first, terrifying taste of showbiz, Sam has finally found somewhere he is free to let his cares and dreams run wild – but this time, with a purpose! Welcome back to the podcast, I'm Jamie Baynes. As I've mentioned previously, I'm lucky enough to get email pitches from publicists from time to time, which I thoroughly enjoy because they introduce me to people I never would have thought to speak with. Recently, I was asked if I'd like to interview Dominic Hoffman about his upcoming book of short stories. I of course said yes, then stopped short. Dominic Hoffman? THE Dominic Hoffman. He's been in a ton of shows that I've watched, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to him. See if you can tell….I hope you enjoy the episode. You know, sometimes it seems rare that you hit it off with someone you've never met and immediately feel comfortable talking to that person. Well, right from the start, Dominic was easy to talk to and he's so insightful that it's hard to stop talking to him. I think that's what's lacking in today's interactions: actually talking to someone. Not texting them or commenting back and forth over social media posts. We need to rediscover the art of conversation. It will make us all better people. Make sure you check out Dominic's book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 154 - Tracy Letts - Actor / Writer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with actor and writer Tracy Letts (AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, BUG, HOMELAND). Born and raised in Oklahoma, Tracy struck out for Chicago after high school to find work as an actor in the city's active theatre scene, and we learn why Tracy began writing plays himself. We also discuss cinema's role as a messenger for exposing the stories of the stage to rural American communities without access to the theatre, and he shares his mixed experiences adapting his plays into films, from director William Friedkin's tense vision of BUG to the Hollywood ensemble version of his Pulitzer Prize winning play AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. An accomplished actor as well, Tracy reflects on seeking advice for performing for the camera from his seasoned HOMELAND castmates Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, and he reveals how he felt when, after being replaced on a film he had written, he was asked to act in additional scenes invented for his character. Plus, Tracy quotes a critical review that ironically sold out the remaining shows of his first play KILLER JOE.  - This episode is sponsored by Barco & Aputure

A Princess's Plea, 8min., USA Directed by Brooke Thornton, Madison Hubler Princess Circe awaits in her tower when Vince Davenport, crown prince of a rich kingdom, comes to claim her as his wife. But with the beast left unslain and the princess left unimpressed, Vince's quest takes a dark and unexpected turn. https://www.instagram.com/aprincesssplea Get to know filmmaker Madison Hubler: What motivated you to make this film? I have always loved dragons since I was a little girl. That is what originally drew me to the realm of fantasy, and when I discovered Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, my world shifted. It was the equivalent of a comic book kid seeing his favorite superhero come to life on screen. I had an epiphany: That is the kind of character I want to play. Being a ‘dragon queen' became a self-proclaimed part of my identity, and it shifted the way I moved through the world. It gave me confidence and strength- to put myself out there and claim my place. I felt this creative fire inside me, pushing me to write a story that would bring that dream to life. When the idea came to flip a well-known trope on its head, nothing could stop me. All this to say, the story came from deep within my soul. I created it for myself, and everything that comes after is just the cherry on top to one of the best things I've done in my life. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? The film took about one year to make. The writing and filming process went by pretty quickly. I had a very clear vision going in and knew exactly what story I wanted to tell. The bulk of the time was spent with the editor, watching over his shoulder, nit-picking each second, and then working up the courage to actually show it to people when it was finished. How would you describe your film in two words!? Fun and unexpected! (Episode 48 which originally aired on August 8th, 2024).The original podcast show notes:This week, we talk to legendary actor, musician, performance artist, and writer ANN MAGNUSON (Bongwater, The Hunger, Making Mr. Right, Cabin Boy, Pyramid Club, Club 57) about the influential cinema jazz documentary Jazz On A Summer's Day.  We discuss the performances in the film (including Thelonious Monk, Anita O' Day, Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy to name a few performers), what it was like for Ann to inhabit Anita O'Day for the audio book of her autobiography, first impressions of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Ann's programing at the legendary NYC Club 57, Ann's new song 'Ghost Cat' with producer Don Dixon, her early life in West Virginia, D.I.Y. & Ann's SurRURALism techniques, success in the underground being a dirty word, the return of Vulcan Death Grip, being a professional walk-a-thoner, photographer & filmmaker Bert Stern, how the film brings a visceral sense of childhood for Ann, how Stern made the whole project happen with his own equipment and financing, Ann's parents and the dry Jazz club scene in West Virginia, filming Making Mr. Right and the new wave sensibility of the 80s, how Monk's performance is presented in the film, Chris scats the Anita O' Day finale of ‘Tea For Two' from his memory of repeated listening of the film at his video store, the white privilege throughout in the film, midnight Mahalia Jackson performances, how protest music is needed now more than ever and Ann reads from Anita O'day's memoir about the performance that was filmed for this movie and how it changed O'Days life. So let's never sing the same song the same way twice on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!ANN MAGNUSON:https://annmagnuson.com/https://annmagnuson.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-catVULCAN DEATH GRIP:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2_dWSpDXJEREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. ROBERT SHAW: An Actor's Life on the Set of JAWS and Beyond is the first narrative biography of Robert Shaw, written by his nephew, Christopher Shaw Myers, bringing fresh insight into the life of the celebrated actor. The biography is timed to the 50th Anniversary of JAWS this summer; Universal is bringing the film back to first-run theatres just in time for (gulp!) beach season.A true Renaissance man, Robert Shaw's professional success on the screen, stage, and page are just one part of his multifaceted story. From his childhood as a Brit in Orkney, Robert was a natural leader who had a penchant for performing. Despite stacked successes both on and off the stage-he was one of the few people to receive both an Oscar nomination for acting and a Tony nomination for writing-international fame eluded him until the breakout of JAWS.Myers also offers a revealing look at the forces that shaped such a dynamic individual, including Shaw's childhood during World War II, his indomitable mother, his activist sister, and the traumatic events of their childhood that led to Shaw's lifelong battle with alcohol addiction.Shaw cut his teeth in the London theatre, acting alongside such legendary Shakespearian stalwarts as Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guiness, and Sir Michael Redgrave. He was nominated for an Oscar (A Man for All Seasons) and dyed his hair blond as James Bond's nemesis in To Russia With Love. He developed his craft moving between stage, screen, and television. He helped Paul Newman and Robert Redford turn The Sting into Academy Award gold. But it was Shaw's unforgettable role in the astounding success of JAWS, the groundbreaking film that became the first "summer blockbuster" which transformed American film forever. With genre-bending innovation and revolutionary revenue as the first movie to exceed $100 million in the U.S. box office, JAWS was, and remains, a legendary touchstone in pop culture. The film's iconic USS Indianapolis monologue was written by Shaw himself and had fans scrambling to their history books to learn more about this gruesome moment in military history. This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. Her TV guest-star credits include New Girl, Shonda Rhimes' For The People, The League, Rules of Engagement, NCIS, and the Peabody award-winning satire American Vandal.Behind the mic, she has voiced countless characters in TV, films, trailers, commercials, and some of the biggest video game franchises around, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A two-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, she has narrated the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the National Book Award finalist Sabrina & Corina, and the New York Times's non-fiction best seller Random Family to name just a few. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, then spent a year teaching English in Madrid, Spain. She returned to the Bay Area and immersed herself in theatre and improvisation, then made her way to Los Angeles where she continued her improv and acting training and began writing and performing sketch comedy.Roxana is an alumna of the CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, Upright Citizen's Brigade, and the Groundlings Sunday Company. The five shows he appeared on are well-known shows like Card Sharks, Scrabble and Shop Till You Drop and as more obscure shows like Grab Bag and Hollywood Showdown. He wins some, he loses some and he learns some. Dennis shares stories from various shows he appeared on--or attempted to--like Jumble, That's The Question, Family Feud, Deal or No Deal, The Price Is Right and $25,000 Pyramid. Other topics include: faking sick as a kid so you could stay home and watch game shows, the day-to-day pressure of trying to not seem too gay as a kid, which game show hosts are the hottest and the appeal of game shows generally. Mitch also talks about being recognized as the flight attendant from Bridesmaids, often on airplanes, and recalls the recent Hollywood Forever cemetary screening that made him feel like a total rock star.

Best known for co-creating and starring in the HBO series Insecure, Issa has attracted a significant amount of Hollywood spotlight largely by showcasing her own personal experiences and emotions on screen for all to see. Literally starting from scratch in 2011 as the singular brainchild of a homegrown, Kickstarter-funded YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl, she's come quite a long way to become the sitting President of Barbie Land in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. She's done amazing work in films like American Fiction, The Lovebirds and The Photograph, and lent her voice to the iconic Marvel character Spider-Woman in Sony's massively successful animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She's even had the incredible opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Issa has also notably put forth a lot of effort toward making more room for African American stories as the founder and CEO of her own film and TV production company, HOORAE. If a super successful career in entertainment wasn't enough, Issa has also found time to branch out into the retail space as co-founder and creative leader of the haircare brand Sienna Naturals—which we carry at Nordstrom—and more recently she's taken the role of chief storyteller for the jewelry brand Cast, which we also carry. We figured that all of the above was probably enough to earn her a spot on The Nordy Pod. Thanks for tuning in to episode 72. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? SEASON 2 - EPISODE 110 - JON SANDERS & ANNA MOTTRAM - WRITER / DIRECTOR & WRITER / ACTOR On the episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with writer/director Jon Sanders & actor/writer Anna Mottram (PAINTED ANGELS, A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER, A CLEVER WOMAN). As old friends and a fellow filmmaking couple, we had a lot to talk about! Roger and Jon reminisce on coming up together amidst the fallout television left hanging over England's film scene, and we all compare our experiences working with our partners over a lifetime. Anna muses on the act of improvisation as an actor, and Jon shares how he works with the cinematographer to pull off the series of long takes that define their films. We later discuss the liberating force of digital cameras, and we learn why they opt to improvise every scene and shoot their films in chronological order. Towards the end, we reflect on their commitment to the theatrical experience, the reach of their films, and on the touching feedback Jon and Anna receive from their viewers. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
