Hello, neighbor, I mean, Slackers! This week we are going to explore the educational live-action children's shows of the 1970s and 1980s that defined the Generation X experience. These programs were foundational, delivering lessons with creativity and care in an era before digital media. From the community spirit of Sesame Street to the gentle guidance of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, it's all about the shows that made education engaging and actually fun. My personal GOATs? Fred Rogers and Captain Kangaroo! The Electric Company used characters like Morgan Freeman's (!) Easy Reader to teach reading to older children, while Romper Room's Miss Nancy instilled manners through her Magic Mirror. Reading Rainbow, hosted by LeVar Burton, encouraged a love for literature, and Mr. Wizard's World made science accessible with Don Herbert's experiments. Each program contributed to a foundation of curiosity and empathy. There are also a ton of lesser-known shows like Zoom, which empowered children to create their own content, and The Big Blue Marble, which introduced global perspectives. Villa Alegre promoted bilingual learning, and 3-2-1 Contact brought STEM to life. These shows were more than entertainment; they were trusted sources of knowledge and connection for a generation.Available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, and major streaming platforms. The Howdy Doody Show is one of those pieces of 1950s ephemera that has come to symbolize mid-century American childhood. For over a decade, every weeknight at 5pm, kids all across the country would sit down in front of their parents' tiny televisions and take in the wild west adventures of Buffalo Bob and his puppet sidekick Howdy Doody. The show was disproportionately important in the history of television. It was the first television program to reach 1,000 episodes, one of the first shows to broadcast in color, and it pioneered new ways of marketing products to children. But in the early days of the medium, especially when Howdy Doody first started, the world of television was strange. In many ways, the story of Howdy Doody is the story of the weird, wild-west days of early TV. A story in which programmers, advertisers, artists and money men were inventing everything as they went along. Starting with what to put on television in the first place.581- It's Howdy Doody Time!

Speedy Claxton, the head coach at Hofstra, advised one of his kids to enter the transfer portal because he was so good. He's now in the Final Four with Alabama, and his name is Aaron Estrada. We talked about a new structure for college football from a company called College Sports Tomorrow. We also remembered the great Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers' story that Mike Francesa thought was real. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of last night's Rangers/Devils line brawl as soon as the puck dropped. The Bills sent Stefon Diggs to the Texans. The Yankees start the season 6-1 with a win in Arizona. Alex Verdugo hit his first HR as a Yankee. Steve Cohen was on CNBC to talk about trying to make the fans happy. In the final segment of the hour, Sal and BT talked about the comments made about Sal when BT took off during the opening week of baseball. Gio thinks Sal kind of backtracked on that one saying he missed his partner. Gio felt a legitimate issue between the two coming over the radio. Boomer called it, ‘the beginning of the end for them'. Gio said no way.
Hour 1 The Rangers and Devils game started with 8 guys fighting as soon as the puck dropped. The main event was Matt Rempe vs Kurtis MacDermid. Some fans don't like the fighting, but Boomer likes it when it's played within the unwritten rules. Jerry is here for his first update and has audio from the line brawl that started the Rangers/Devils game. The Bills sent Stefon Diggs to the Texans. Mike Francesa wants the Jets to draft the offensive lineman from Notre Dame, Joe Alt. If they don't, he said they ‘should be shot'. Joe Benigno is now doing ads for Manscaped and Jerry has the audio. The Yankees got back on track in Arizona yesterday. Aaron Judge had a HR and an RBI double. Ohtani hit his first HR of the season, and his first as a Dodger. In the final segment of the hour, Gio said there's a new sheriff in town when it comes to breaking NFL news: Antonio Brown and his new network, C-T-ESPN. He predicted Stefon Diggs to the Texans a while ago. Antonio Brown does a ‘cracker of the day'. Hour 2 Speedy Claxton, the head coach at Hofstra, advised one of his kids to enter the transfer portal because he was so good. Hour 3 Brandon Tierney sent Gio a HR call for Alex Verdugo. Gio kind of likes it but the rest of us think it's terrible. We told callers not to call with their own HR calls or they would be banned. They kept calling but Al never put any of them through. There's an eclipse this coming Monday. Jerry returns for an update but first BT is here to talk about the comments Sal made about him for taking off the first week of baseball season. Jerry starts with audio of the Yankees winning again as they head home with a 6-1 record. Steve Cohen was on CNBC and he's not panicking yet. The Rangers beat the Devils last night as they dropped the gloves as soon as the puck dropped. In the final segment of the hour, the MTA wants to charge the NYC Marathon to use the Verrazano Bridge. Hour 4 Tiger Woods' friend said he's abstaining from sex while he gets ready for the Masters. Gio wonders if that works for golf. Boomer talked about the TGL, Tomorrow's Golf League. Gio said he has no interest in watching guys hitting into a simulator. Justin Thomas broke up with his caddie right before the Masters. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with Steve Cohen on CNBC talking about the TGL. Jerry has audio from Devils radio from the start of the Rangers game where there was a line brawl. Mac Jones told the media he likes to do some rapping which he never told anyone because he played in New England. The Moment of The Day involves Joe Benigno's partnership with Manscaped. In the final segment of the hour, Gio has some headlines and wants to see if you can pick out the fake story. The real story involves the self proclaimed world's sexiest albino.

We may have an obscure album for your listening pleasure today. Crabby Appleton was a short-lived band that was formed by the combination of musicians from an acid blues band called Stonehenge and singer-songwriter frontman Michael Fennelly. The band is out of the Laurel Canyon counterculture, which produced many groups like The Mamas & the Papas, Jim Morrison, Carole King, and Jackson Browne. The group gets its name from a character on the late 50's cartoon series Tom Terrific, which was a part of the children's television show "Captain Kangaroo." Their debut album was eponymously named Crabby Appleton. In addition to Michael Fennelly, the group consisted of percussionist Felix "Flaco" Falcon, Casey Foutz on keyboards, Phil Jones on drums, and Hank Harvey on bass. Phil Jones was the catalyst in the formation of the group after he met Fennelly in a club on the Sunset Strip and asked him to join Stonehenge as lead singer and guitarist. The group signed with Elektra Records, and had a top 40 single with "Go Back." Their second album was called "Rotten to the Core" and was recorded in 1971. After experiencing disappointing sales with this sophomore effort the group split up. They would get some mileage out of their initial success before this happened, and would appear on American Bandstand as well as opening for a number of groups including the Doors, Three Dog Night, ABBA, and the Guess Who. Wayne takes us through this lesser known rock album. Friend of the show Bill Cook sits in for Bruce on this podcast. Peace by PeaceThis song grooves with the Hammond organ and talks about getting back what you give. If you lead with a gun others will respond in kind, while if you lead with peace others will respond with peace. It has a sound similar to the Doors, or Emerson, Lake and Palmer. TryThe lead song from side two starts and ends with an upbeat groove with a Santana-esque percussion jam sandwiched in the middle. The lyrics are about a relationship that could go several ways. “We can try or we can throw it away.”CatherineA slower jam, this short acoustic-based ballad feels like Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It is about a guy who longs for a woman who is in another relationship. Go BackThis is the hit from the record, which went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was called a proto-power-pop single. The song is about a woman in a new relationship who can't give up her love for her ex. “And you know it's not right when you kiss me tonight and you pretend his lips are mine.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Chisum”You can't go wrong with John Wayne. This western was set in 1870's New Mexico. STAFF PICKS:Ride Captain Ride by Blues ImageRob launches the staff picks with a song which got its initial lyrics from the number of keys that singer-guitarist Mike Pinera had on his keyboard. “Seventy-three men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay.” The band is out of Tampa Florida, and this was their only top 40 hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie WonderLynch brings us a grooving, soulful song that would be the anthem for Motown at the time. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song itself is about a guy who has some back to his love, realizing that what he has is all he wants, never to roam again. The Long and Winding Road by the Beatles Bill features a song off the Beatles “Let It Be” album. It was written by Paul McCartney and was released as a single the month after the group broke up. The original recording was more sparse, and the orchestration was added by Phil Spector. McCartney hated the Spector “wall of sound” arrangement, citing the treatment of the song as one of six reasons for justifying the dissolution of the Beatles partnership.Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and YoungWayne's staff pick takes a political turn with a protest song inspired by the shootings at Kent State. Neil Young wrote and sang lead on this song. Student protests of the expansion of the Vietnam Wars led to a standoff at Kent State in which the National Guard killed four people and wounded nine. NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Joe by Quincy JonesWe finish up the podcast with a jazzy number that was popular at the time in 1970. Grab some confetti and settle in to meet Rip Taylor -- The King of Confetti! A flamboyant slinger of "rim shot" jokes, Rip initially punctuated his act with exaggerated crying when his gags bombed. Ed Sullivan was a fan (he booked him over 20 times) and dubbed Rip "The Crying Comedian". Much later when bombing on the Merv Griffin show, instead of crying Rip was moved to tear up his joke cards and toss them in the air like confetti. The audience went nuts and from then on it was confetti instead of crying -- and a career that saw long runs in Las Vegas, many game and talk show appearances, and supporting film roles including Indecent Proposal (a rare dramatic turn) and Wayne's World (a great comedic turn). As always find more clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Rip? The New York Times once described Rip as a cross between Captain Kangaroo and Liberace, wound up to warp factor 7. Pretty good description! https://youtu.be/50pFJU99wUw Ed Sullivan gave Rip his big TV break and had him back over 20 times. Here's an early Rip performance sans mustache and with crying, not confetti, as the shtick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rm4g_ZGx-c Rip was over the top, so in 1978 when producing madman Chuck Barris had an idea for another show that would do for beauty pageants what the Gong Show he tapped Rip to be the host. So back from the glory days of shlock tv -- here's a bit of the $1.98 Beauty Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF7yrbl_X6E
We had a very fun episode last week so we decided to do another Spidey ;67 commentary. This week we start with a bait and switch. It looks like it's going to be an episode about the Lizard, but it actually ends up being with Bayou Billy and a Conquistador. In part 2 we encounter Dennis Farina and the Fiddler played by what appears to by Captain Kangaroo.
On this episode of Our American Stories, on October 3, 1955, a television program debuted that would eventually produce nearly nine thousand shows over a span of nearly 40 years. Rode bikes all around and went to the school and got new Bronco shirts. Bill gives an update on games around the district (6A)... between DHA and... Buras weak. Mr. Perlander didn't want Doug Rhodus back at Boothville so Doug is back at Port Sulphur. Jerolyn says Doug and Kay have been going to church with them. Got a haircut. Bill inquires about what D.D. and Marilyn will do about food storage. Bill shares that Clarence was going to get $13K... and asked how many times 12 will go into $50M. So funny! Quentin hopes the Oilers win. Jerolyn back to the food storage... wheat, sugar, milk and salt... to be strong and healthy. 100 lbs of sugar per person per year. 5 lbs of salt, etc. Quentin wants to rewind the tape already. Always have water; 7 gallons per person. Delta Bank really "screwed them up." They sing "We Thank Thee O God For A Prophet" (Fantastic). Angela and Scott bought a new double-wide trailier. Quentin watches Captain Kangaroo but TV reception is bad. Have to hook up Gail's TV. Went out in the Bayou with Linda, Johnny, Duane and Cindy with Clarence (PawPaw). Quentin caught a croker. Quentin gives report on the fishing trip and that Bill had to jump in and Kyle Bergeron had to use an old fishing pole. Jerolyn reminiscing and sharing funny stories. Quentin going back to the Bayou in the green boat. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-scarabin/message
When you use our kitchen sink, you notice this little contraption attached to the faucet. It's one of those sophisticated water filters. Before the water arrives in your glass or container, it passes through that filter. Now, I don't know about you, but I hate surprises in my water. How about you? I mean, I was amazed the first time that we took that filter off to clean it. Oh, it needed lots of cleaning! It had screened out of our drinking water this layer of dirty stuff. I didn't even want to think about that going into my body. Let's hear it for the filter! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Soul Dirt." That's actually what a lot of people are doing - drinking dirt. Mentally, that is, just getting a lot of things that are spiritually and morally impure poured right into your soul - unfiltered input. And if you belong to Jesus Christ, the dirt is rushing into what the Bible describes as the "temple of the Holy Spirit." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) God literally lives in you through His Holy Spirit. That's Holy Spirit. Dirty stuff should never defile His temple. In fact, in our word for today from the Word of God, God clearly commands us to filter what's coming in. 2 Corinthians 7:1 says, "Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." A lot of times we don't have a spiritual filter for what we see and what we hear. Or we have a pretty wide screen on that filter - one porous enough to let in a lot that has no place in a heart or a mind that's owned by Jesus and inhabited by the Holy Spirit of God. Sometimes it takes a child to show us "sophisticated" adults how we should be living. The teacher was a five-year-old, our grandson, who was watching a new crop of kids' shows some years ago. Captain Kangaroo and Mister Rogers (some of you are going, "What?") are long gone, and yes, I think Big Bird might still be flying around Sesame Street. But then there was Dora the Explorer, Bob the Builder, a tomato named Bob. Our grandson, well, he had a few favorites he liked to watch. But then one day he walked over to the television and did something he did not do with this program that he liked a lot. He turned it off in the middle of the show. The story was starting to involve some ghost and witch stuff. When Daddy asked our grandson why he had turned off one of his favorites, he just said, "It was a bad one, Daddy." The radar of a five-year-old boy in whom Jesus lives. He knew that no matter how much he liked the show, no matter how many shows they have where there's nothing bad, when it is bad, it isn't for him. You know what? That's a model for a Jesus-follower of any age. But all too often, we watch portrayed, or we read about, or we listen to something that is part of the very sin that Jesus died for. The Bible says He carried our sins in His body on the tree, "that we might die to sins" (1 Peter 2:24). So what business do we have letting in things that portray premarital sex, or nudity, or adultery, or occult practices that the Bible calls an "abomination." You can't turn on the TV or radio or go to a website and then turn off being a temple of the Holy Spirit. We're most likely to let in the garbage when it's wrapped in a package that's funny, or entertaining, or has a great beat, or is clever, or popular. Satan's no dummy! He comes in under the radar, like a Stealth Bomber, when your guard's down. It's not to be taken lightly when God gives a command that says, "Above all else..." And He does that in Proverbs 4:23. "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." Guard your heart as the spiritual reservoir from which you drink all day long. If it's a "bad one," you've got to turn it off if you're serious about really being His man or woman. If you don't want to let dirt into the Holy Spirit's house, filter what you let come in. You wouldn't knowingly let your mouth drink dirt. Well, then, don't let your soul do it!
Hey kids, what time is it? Long before Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, or even Captain Kangaroo, there was Howdy Doody. Its creator was a young radio broadcaster nicknamed Buffalo Bob Smith. In this nostalgic and engaging 1990 interview, Smith tells the story of Howdy. And dispels a few myths. Hour 2 Mekhi Becton is fired up for training camp, but keeps going back to his injury, seemingly blaming the coaches, but which happened because he was out of shape. Ty Johnson got surgery and then the Jets released him and now he's angry at the Jets doctors. Artie in Brooklyn wants to know how we can trust the Mets GM if they just brought up Gary Sanchez. He's also puzzled by Pete Alonso humping the dugout railing. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the Mets double-header sweep of the Guardians. Verlander and Scherzer both delivered yesterday. Verlander had a busted open callus on his thumb adding to his many ailments since becoming a Met. The Yankees swept the Reds behind a strong season debut by Luis Severino. Aaron Boone got tossed early in this one. Aaron Hicks got designated for assignment so his days with the Yankees are over. The Heat beat the Celtics big time and now lead the series 3-0. Vegas beat Dallas again in the NHL Western Conference finals. And Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship, the first LIV golfer to do so. In the final segment of the hour, we have audio from Classic Mike & The Mad Dog where Mike thought actor Lee Marvin was a war hero. He also thought Captain Kangaroo was a war hero. Oh, and Mister Rogers as well.
Hour 3 We have two noncompetitive series going on in the NBA. The Heat are up 3-0 on the Celtics and the Nuggets are up 3-0 on the Lakers. Gio wants the Knicks to get Damian Lillard from Portland. Outside of Jalen Brunson, everyone should be on the table. Lillard is the type of guy you trade everything for. A caller thinks Gio is bashing the Yankees all the time now. Gio just thinks they're the same team as they've been the last few years. They will make the playoffs and get bounced. C-Lo returns for an update but first Gio tells us he's signing up for a 4-mile run for charity. The Mets swept a double-header over the Guardians thanks to Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. The Yankees swept the Reds behind HRs by Bader and Torres yesterday. The Celtics were non-competitive in Miami and are now down 3-0 in the series. Golfer Michael Block looks like he's using Just For Men on his beard, which makes Gio skeptical to use it himself. In the final segment of the hour, Ben Roethlisberger had Kenny Pickett on his podcast and admitted to wanting to see him fail. He wasn't even on the team at the time as he was already retired. Boomer asked if anybody really retires in our industry and we talked about Joe Benigno wanting to retire and move to Florida and now he's doing weekend shows on WFAN.
A caller starts us off with Boomer being nominated for the Bengals Ring of Honor. The Mets had a solid weekend over the Guardians and have now won 5 in a row, including sweeping a double-header yesterday. Boomer is more worried about the bullpen and says it will ultimately be their achilles heel. C-Lo returns for an update but first we talked about Gio's Blue Chew commercial and Pete Alonso looking possessed when he's humping the dugout fence. The Mets swept a double-header from the Guardians and have won 5 straight. Scherzer had a busted open thumb callus that he was fighting through. The Yankees swept the Reds and Aaron Boone was tossed in the first inning. Harrison Bader had a HR off Hunter Green. Boomer trims his nose hairs with Gio's trimmers. Gio has saved impressively long nose hairs to show his wife. Ben Roethlisberger admits to wanting to see Kenny Pickett fail as Steelers QB. Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship. Michael Block hit a hole in one and tried to sum up the weekend and started crying. In the final segment of the show, weather looks decent for Kickoff to Summer. Carmelo Anthony is retiring from the NBA. We thought he was already retired. The Lakers seem interested in going after Kyrie Irving now.
The Mets looked good this weekend with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander both pitching well in the double header yesterday. Gio is starting to build trust in Verlander. The Mets also have a strange group hump type celebration. Brandon Nimmo doesn't do the humping, most likely due to his religious beliefs. The Yankees are on way too many channels now: YES, ESPN, Fox, Peacock, Apple TV+. C-Lo is in for Jerry and starts with the Mets sweeping a double-header from the Guardians. Lindor had a couple of good games this weekend against his former team. Max Scherzeer talked about his thumb callus busting open. The Yankees swept the Reds this weekend. Aaron Boone was tossed yesterday before noon. Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship, the first LIV golfer to do so. Michael Block hit a hole in one. The Heat smoked the Celtics to go up 3-0 in the series. The Nuggets are also up 3-0 on the Lakers. In the final segment of the hour, NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown passed away. He also had several different domestic violence charges against him. We also talked about ‘The Dirty Dozen' with Brown and Lee Marvin. Mekhi Becton is fired up for training camp, but keeps going back to his injury, seemingly blaming the coaches, but which happened because he was out of shape. Ty Johnson got surgery and then the Jets released him and now he's angry at the Jets doctors. Artie in Brooklyn wants to know how we can trust the Mets GM if they just brought up Gary Sanchez. Welcome to September 16th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate fascinating fungus and a dough reinvented. The largest organism on Earth isn't an animal. It isn't a tree, either. Surprisingly, it's a fungus called the honey mushroom that grows in Oregon's Malheur National Forest. The mushroom has a system that covers nearly 2000 acres, both above and below ground. It's also estimated to be around 8,000 years old, which makes it one of the oldest living things on the planet. For the fresher kind, folks can visit the mushroom capital of the world which is found in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Here they produce more than one million pounds of edible mushrooms a day. This town is gearing up to celebrate National Mushroom Month with a festival that draws a crowd of 100,000! When Joe McVicker first discovered a clay that would pick up soot from wallpaper his invention had an important job. But when furnaces changed from coal to oil, this wallpaper cleaner was out of work. Joe was inspired to put the clay in the hands of some preschoolers, renaming it Play-Doh and adding some color. But when Captain Kangaroo featured the toy on his new CBS show, Play-Doh became a household name. Inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 1988, it's hard to imagine a world without this creative invention. On National Play-Doh Day, celebrate the spirit of fun that still fuels our kids' imaginations. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
