This month in DADAstrology Land, Astrologers Vivi Henriette and Martha Fearnley attempt to make sense of the pileup of planets in Gemini. This conversation takes place on the eve of the Gemini New Moon, but its subject matter expands further into the chaos realm of Mercury's airy home. Which is to say: this content is timeless. TOPICS COVERED: Los Angeles v. New York, Lying, Planets Du Jour!, Comedy Bang! Bang!, “Planets, Planets, Planets”, Saturn Square Jupiter & MORE! MARTHA' S FILM FOR THE SEASON: Los Angeles Plays Itself by Thom Andersen ABOUT MARTHA Martha Fearnley is a writer, performer, and astrologer with a background in improv comedy and devised theater. She can be seen monthly with house improv team PONY at UCB Franklin and intermittently with astrology clown group "Planets Planets Planets," where she is currently playing the moon. Aphrodite and Mars, the original star-crossed lovers, their hot and heavy relationship fuels all creation. In astrology, their respective planets, Venus and Mars, join the moon to comprise the night sect of plants. The push-pull of beauty and desire under the romantic moonlight. In this episode of DADAstrology, astrologer Vivi Henriette and Martha Fearnly explore the archetypes of Venus and Mars through the film American Beauty. The takeaway? The 1990s were so much drama. And that what happens at night can get real ugly under the light of day. ABOUT MARTHA Martha Fearnley is a writer, performer, and astrologer with a background in improv comedy and devised theater. Seth Morris is one of the most prolific performers to come out of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. His sketch group Naked Babies (with John Ross Bowie, Rob Corddry, and Brian Huskey) was a juggernaut. Seth also performed in classic long-running improvised shows like Feature Feature and Facebook. He was the first Artistic Director at UCB Franklin, worked at Funny or Die, and has acted on shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Veep, and Big Mouth. Will talked to Seth about the insane amount of talent at UCB in the early days, and the different paths those people have taken since.Seth and Will also talk about their relationships with improv, and the importance of the hang in a creative community.Recorded at Jett Road Studios.------------------LIFE IN COMEDYInstagramJETT ROAD STUDIOSWebsiteInstagramYouTube
Well it's that magical time of the year when we have our dear friend Max Wittert back on the podcast to create enough tension to give chronic pain to anyone who listens. We attack each other emotionally, spiritually, and financially but at what cost? Many shocking theories are explored like, are north and south poles actually different from each other? Is there value in being nice? And is angel hair pasta good? Plus, we examine the concept of love and which types of relationships are actually gay. The answer may surprise you! And if you live in Portland, Seattle, or LA, Max is bringing his solo show "I Can Steal Your Mother" to you and you must go! LA: Come see George do an hour of standup comedy at the Elysian Theater on March 5 and March 6! Tickets at linktree.com/georgeciveris and we're doing a StraightioLab live show at UCB Franklin on March 14th. Welcome to the Grindhouse!! We're covering THE seminal 2007 double feature: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. But wait, there's more! Fictional trailers by real directors, like Edgar Wright's "Don't!", Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the SS", and Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" (now a major motion picture!) Joining the podcast this week is Patrick Cotnoir (@cotnoir), producer of The George Lucas Talk Show and talent booker for Asssscat at UCB Franklin. It's kind of a sweet spot if you, as a comedian, can have your day job also be in comedy. JoAnn Schinderle has managed to land there with being the Venue Manager at UCB Franklin in addition to being a wonderful stand-up in the LA scene (and even making some dough from commissioned erotic fiction). Switching gears between all three and whatever falls in between can be a challenge, which is why we talk to her all about how she pulls it off (as well as what's going on behind-the-scenes at Upright Citizens Brigade these days). Also, "hot"/hot takes on this year's Emmy nominees. Follow JoAnn @joann.schinderle on IG Produced by Jake Kroeger Music by Brian Granillo Artwork by Andrew Delman and Jake Kroeger
Our only New Year's resolution was to get Greta Titelman, Carl Tart, Lamar Woods, Jamie Loftus, and Geoff & Reilly all into the green room together at UCB Franklin and, well... now we can take the rest of the year off. For our 3rd ep of Headgum Happy Hour, we asked our comedian friends/colleagues to head to the hallowed stage of UCB, and the ensuing hour of stand-up/improv is truly the only way to ring in two-zero-two-three if ya ask us. Hosted by Father Time and the New Year Baby themselves, Amir Blumenfeld and Danny Sellers. Watch the video version on Youtube Like the show?
