“Today is all about 7's…” We can't believe it…it's officially been SEVEN years since we began our podcasting journey, and as of this episode, we are celebrating SEVEN years of heavy metal podcasting excellence! And in the spirit of heavy metal greatness, what better way to celebrate and commemorate the completion of our SEVENTH year than a tribute to the best thing MTV ever did for metal heads that started way back in the late 80's: HEADBANGERS BALL!!! “It was the novelty, because that was the only place where you could get it…” Premiering on Saturday April 18, 1987, MTV began what would become a weekly Saturday night tradition and/or ritual for metal heads with HEADBANGERS BALL, the one section of MTV that belonged to the metal community…it was OUR show, OUR music, and OUR videos, made by metal heads for metal heads (ironically, not unlike this podcast). “SEVEN!” Granted, there were often a lot of glam and hair metal videos mixed in, but there were always a plethora of obscure thrash, power metal, and other assorted heavy metal videos on there that you absolutely could not see anywhere else on MTV except for when you tuned in to “The Ball” (NOTE: this is where the crochety “back in my day” sentiment comes into play because, as everyone with access to the internet knows, in the late 80's, rock radio sure as hell wasn't doing much to promote metal artists, and we certainly didn't have Spotify or YouTube at our disposal. “The Ball” was all we had…mark the time.). “They weren't Trans then, dude…they were 100% dudes and they were the Savatage Brothers…” Break out your finest relaxers and get ready for a celebratory stroll down memory lane, and understand that since we're discussing music videos, you're gonna need all the sensory enhancement you can muster to thoroughly maximize your enjoyment of this episode. Find out who's “lips are always out”, understand why calling a woman “handsome” is a dangerous move even with the proper context, see how many applicable references to “SEVEN!” you can find in this episode, and don't deny the power of “The Dinklage” when you JOIN US as we celebrate our 7th birthday in nostalgic style with HEADBANGERS BALL. Remember The Untouchables from 1987 starring Kevin Costner & Sean Connery? We remember it being the bee's knees. A real hotsy-totsy gangster picture where every problem could be solved with a quick quip & a Tommy Gun. Every scene is packed with tough mugs, and enough lead flying around Chicago to start a scrap metal shortage. We remember Robert De Niro's Al Capone being one scary palooka, and our good guys trying to clean up the town one wise guy at a time. But is this Prohibition-era classic still the cat's pajamas, or has it gone the way of bathtub gin and twenty-cent cigars? So grab your fedora, tell the coppers to take a hike, and join us as we revisit The Untouchables to find out if this old-time gangster flick still packs a wallop.

The Readings for Today's Homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/051926.cfmWhat does it really mean to glorify God the Father? Father Chris Alar, MIC, explains that glorifying God begins with obedience — not out of fear, but with the trust of a child who knows the Father loves him. Jesus reveals this perfectly on the Cross, where His total obedience opens the way for us to return to God. ★ Support this podcast ★

Craig unloads on legendary sequels like Ghostbusters 2, Jaws 2, Ace Ventura 2, Back to the Future 2, and even Die Hard With a Vengeance while the rest of the studio calls his movie opinions completely insane.

What happens when a video game stops playing by the rules? Doug and returning guest Noah (Gunchpot) go deep on the most creative, bizarre, and genuinely brilliant video game mechanics ever designed — from games that fake-crash your console to math games that secretly turn into space jail simulators. Games covered include Shenmue (the 1999 Dreamcast game that made boredom part of the experience by giving you an actual forklift job), Seaman (raise a fish with a human face that insults you, narrated by Leonard Nimoy), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (the GameCube horror game that fake-deleted your save file and muted your TV on purpose), Metal Gear Solid (Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and comments on your other games), Facade (a 2005 AI couples therapy simulator where typing the word "melon" gets you thrown out of the apartment), Frog Fractions (a browser math game that secretly turns into a completely different game — then hid its sequel inside an entirely separate game for years), Doki Doki Literature Club (the anime dating sim that deletes characters from your hard drive as part of its horror), Disco Elysium (where your skills literally argue with you and you can fail a check just trying to get out of bed), and WarioWare (five-second micro games with one-word instructions and zero hand-holding). Plus: QWOP, Baby Steps, Superhot VR, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, I Am Bread, and more. Before all that: Noah is working through 800 of 1,000 movies on his Letterboxd watchlist, watched Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park for the first time this year, and is deep in the David Lynch rabbit hole. Doug's dog Bruno had a very eventful Mother's Day morning involving a rabbit, a shovel, and a crow. Then it's time for The Verdict — the Letterboxd review guessing game. This round covers The Mummy, Devil Wears Prada 2, Nosferatu, Longlegs, Conclave, Barbie, Glass Onion, and Andor. This week's recommendations: Noah: Casino Royale. One of the best action films ever made, full stop. Doug: Potion Seller's debut album Buzzard is out now. Go listen. Brainsynthesizer.com for merch and physical copies. DL, Evil, and Rachel dig into System of a Down's Toxicity (2001) — one of the biggest metal albums ever made, debuting at #1 the week before 9/11 and getting Chop Suey immediately pulled from radio. The central argument: Toxicity is not a nu-metal record. It's one of the most coherent political albums ever made — a sustained meditation on apathy, incarceration, the Armenian-American experience, and what happens when society stops giving a shit about each other. Prison Song, Needles, ATWA, and "somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep" hit completely different when you actually listen to what Serj Tankian is saying.Along the way: why "Chop Suey" was originally titled "Suicide" (and how the rename was pure SOAD genius), the story of Rick Rubin seeing them at the Viper Room in 1997 and immediately knowing, Daron Malakian's insistence the album fit on one side of a tape at exactly 40 minutes, the time signatures and hemiola that make Toxicity sound heavier than it should, and the direct sonic DNA connecting Faith No More's Epic piano outro to Chop Suey's ending. The influence arc: System of a Down directly cited Faith No More as a key influence — this episode is part of a two-week influence-to-influence series starting with The Real Thing.Scores: Rachel 10/10, Evil 10/10, DL 9.8/10.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's album-by-album deep dive series.System of a Down,Toxicity,Chop Suey,Serj Tankian,Daron Malakian,Rick Rubin, metal album review,Armenian rock,2001 albums, political metal,Faith No More influence, music podcast
Colors came out in 1988 and was the first film to put the Bloods and Crips on screen by name. It feels cheesy now. It would have felt raw as hell then. Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin open the Robert Duvall arc with the movie that crawled so Training Day, The Wire, and End of Watch could run. This episode examines a Bluesky thread where cartoonists self-reported their financial realities. While the original question was thoughtful — seeking insight into full-time and part-time comic careers — the resulting discussion revealed a common problem: an echo chamber of discouragement. Brad and Dave emphasize that these threads often skew negative due to self-selection bias. Many successful creators don't participate—either because they're busy, uncomfortable sharing income, or wary of backlash. The result? A distorted picture where it appears that no one is succeeding, even though many are. What if the move you didn't want to make was the one that changed everything? Ryan Rominger relocated from California to Indianapolis without a real estate playbook — just a new market, a hunger to build, and the willingness to figure it out. What happened next is the kind of story that makes you rethink where you're investing and why. In this episode, Ryan breaks down how Indianapolis became the launching pad for a career and portfolio that most people only dream about. We get into why the Indianapolis market is still one of the most overlooked opportunities in the country, how becoming a realtor and property manager gave him an unfair advantage as an investor, and the mindset shift that made it all click. If you've ever wondered whether your market is holding you back — or whether there's a better game being played somewhere else — this episode is your answer.
