Bob stars as Ulysses, an unassuming substitute sheriff with a troubled past who takes a quiet posting in a small town, only to get pulled into a dangerous conspiracy after a bank robbery reveals something far more explosive beneath the surface. Fans can watch the trailer for Normal Here --> Normal - Official Trailer Bob and Gentry dive into what makes Normal such a wild ride, including the fun of working on action movies filled with chaos, guns, danger, and dark comedy. Bob also talks about working alongside the great Henry Winkler, why he believes Henry is such a gifted actor, and what it was like sharing scenes with him. The conversation also goes deep into Bob’s comedy roots. He shares what it’s like writing sketch comedy, including the legendary “Motivational Speaker” sketch with Chris Farley, and how that kind of writing helped shape his voice as a performer. Of course, Bob also reflects on playing Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, why audiences connected so deeply with the character, and how Saul became one of television’s most unforgettable personalities. From sketch comedy to prestige TV to full-throttle action, this episode is packed with stories, laughs, and insight from one of the most versatile performers in entertainment.

[46:32 - 1:00:02 approx] Speaking of Christophers, back in the podbooth Chris Hewitt is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Harry Stainer for a fun episode in which they discuss the greatest characters who joined franchises after the first film, and whether event cinema is making a comeback. They also run their eye over the week's movie news, including news of a possible Tintin 2, and review Curry Barker's Obsession, The Christophers, The Punisher: One Last Kill, and Ben Wheatley's Bob Odenkirk action fest, Normal. Then, Helen O'Hara leaps onto Zoom and has a chat about how the times are a-changin' in The Devil Wears Prada 2, with that film's writer, Aline Brosh McKenna. Enjoy!

This week Simon Mayo talks to Olivia Colman, joined by Sophie Hyde, director of the new film Jimpa, in which Olivia stars. The film explores queerness, intergenerational family, and gender fluidity, and places kindness firmly at its heart - but will that be enough for Mark? You'll have to listen to his verdict in this week's Take Two to find out.    In this week's reviews: The Christophers stars last week's guest Sir Ian McKellen as a once‑great artist whose awful children plan to forge his unfinished paintings for their own financial gain. Obsession is a creepy love‑horror that's far too much for Simon, but which Mark is more than happy to peer into. And finally, Normal drops Bob Odenkirk and Henry Winkler into a Fargo‑esque Minnesota small town packed with axe‑throwing, car‑blowing‑up oddballs. Sounds fun - but will Mark enjoy it?    Oh. Despite the snowy setting, law-enforcement-officer protagonist, and pointed poking at the idea of "Minnesota Nice," Ben Wheatley's new Bob Odenkirk-starring shoot-'em-up Nowhere is in many ways the anti-Fargo. Is it fair to compare this scrappy (some might even say sloppy) genre effort to a film as revered as the Coen brothers' comedic crime classic? Maybe not, but that's what we do here at The Next Picture Show, so after a spirited debate over which parts of Nowhere we found the most enervating, we turn to Connections to consider how the two films' many overlapping elements can play out in such different ways. In addition, Brent shares the values he looks to instill into his daughters. After that we move to talk about his fantastic football career. We chat about his tough start into the league after a car accident to playing with the 49ers and winning Super Bowls with Joe Montana and Bill Walsh. We get into his broadcasting career and the challenges that he faced in the broadcast booth. Then we talk about him creating Northgate Capital and getting into the financial industry. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Brent Jones  Brent Jones spent his entire athletic career—prep, college and professional—in the Bay Area, going from Leland High in San Jose to Santa Clara University to the San Francisco 49ers. He was the third tight end taken in the 1986 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 5th round. After being injured in a car accident, the Steelers released him allowing him to be signed by the 49ers and the rest is history for the South Bay product. Eleven of his twelve years in the NFL were as the Niner's All-Pro tight end. Jones ranks fifth in 49er career receiving history. In regular season play, he caught 417 passes for 5,195 yards and 33 touchdowns. In addition, Jones had 60 receptions for 740 yards and 5 touchdowns in the playoffs.  He helped San Francisco to victories in Super Bowls XXIII, XXIV and XXIX. Therefore, Jones became the prototype for the tight end position under legendary 49er Coach Bill Walsh, the architect of the West Coast Offense. A strong blocker, he was an integral part of the 49er offense. In 1998, Jones was awarded the AIA Bart Starr Award, given annually to the NFL player who best exemplifies outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community. Brent retired from the NFL in 1998 and was quickly signed by CBS Sports for the NFL Today Show, and later as an NFL game analyst. He co-founded Northgate Capital and resides with his family in the Bay Area. Brent Jones and his wife, Dana, have two daughters, Rachel and Courtney. #521: Minnesota Not-So-Nice, Pt. 1 — Fargo

As a comedic crime thriller set in snowy Minnesota and featuring a sheriff protagonist, it would be pretty tough for the new Bob Odenkirk-starring shoot-em-up Normal to avoid comparisons to Fargo, and since we will never pass up an opportunity to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1996 classic, that's precisely what we will be comparing it to next week. But first we'll spend this week discussing why Fargo remains so discussable even after multiple viewings, what makes Marge Gunderson — or maybe Jerry Lundegaard — such an effective protagonist, and how the film's unusual structure and tonal shifts can take even the most seasoned viewer by surprise. Then in Feedback, we keep The Drama going with an encore presentation of our disagreement about that film's ending. Please share your thoughts about Fargo, Normal, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Now Playing - The Movie Review Podcast

I guess you think you're... you know, like an authority figure, with that stupid fuckin' uniform, huh buddy? Bob Odenkirk goes from Nobody to playing a “Normal” small-town interim sheriff. Teaming up again with Derek Kolstad, does he bring the same mix of dry humor and sudden violence that made their last series work? And with Henry Winkler in the wintery mix, are we getting something closer to the quirky crime chaos of Fargo, or just another round of bumbling crooks? Nearly nobody went to see this in theaters, but our hosts did, and you can join them now for this far-from-normal movie review!

Bob Odenkirk joins us for a layered and unexpectedly vulnerable conversation about reinvention, ego, and mortality. Bob breaks down the exact moment he decided to pivot from comedy and Saul Goodman into full blown action films, why he refused to wink at the audience in Nobody, and how real life rage from a home invasion became creative fuel. He also opens up about collapsing on set from a heart attack, losing a week of memory, and the hard reality of limited time at 63. Bob Odenkirk has pivoted from sketch comedy to dramatic acting and, most recently, to late-middle-aged action star. In the new film Normal, he plays a small-town sheriff who finds out his small town isn't so normal after all, which will of course require some sexagenarian butt-kicking. The cast includes Henry Winkler and Lena Headey, and was written by Derek Kolstad, the mind behind the John Wick franchise. Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureSubscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour  See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy
