We talk a lot about agility, and today, we're going to talk about how lessons of agility can come from unexpected places - like the set of Seinfeld - where - for those superfans like me - our guest played Alec Berg - which should be said in more of a Jon Houseman manner, and while guest starring there (plus other shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Tracey Takes On..., and more) took some lessons from the value of collaboration and how great ideas can come from anyone, anywhere. Joining me today is Mark DeCarlo, an Emmy Award-winning comedian, TV host, and speaker who brings a fresh and entertaining perspective on navigating change, AI, and work-life balance. Mark has developed five simple strategies to help people embrace chaos, overcome fear of AI, and actually be happier while working smarter. ABOUT MARK DECARLO Improv actor/host, screenwriter and best-selling author Mark DeCarlo, lives a dual life: as an Emmy Award-winning TV host…and a cartoon. As host/ringleader on 1000+ episodes of hit TV; Studs, X Show, Taste of America, and current series; World's Funniest Videos Top 10 and ABC's Windy City LIVE, Mark's improvisational skills - honed as a Founding member of The Second City Hollywood - have earned him three Emmy Awards for On Camera Host. From pissing-off pal Steve Carell, to convincing a random tourist to pose as a fashion designer during a live remote, Mark's interviews of the famous/infamous celebrate the odd and eccentric. His characters on “Curb your Enthusiasm,” “Tracey Takes On…,” “Seinfeld” and 2020's “Ballbuster,” zig where most zag. That's Mark, the human. Mark, the cartoon, came within a Shrek of winning an Oscar starring as Hugh Neutron in Best Animated Picture nominee “Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius,” and has built a career playing energetic, off-beat and edgy cartoons characters on many series, including; Family Guy, Barnyard, Planet Sheen, Johnny Bravo and Handy Manny. He stars in Steve Oedekirk's series of Thumb comedies from Thumbtanic to BatThumb, and will reprise his iconic role of Black Helmet Man in the upcoming 2022 release of ThumbWars IX. I'm happy I met Camirin before I read their official bio because it's extensive. And intimidating, I'm not even going to try to summarize it: Camirin Farmer is a nonbinary, queer, black performer & astrologer based in Los Angeles, CA. After beginning their comedic career in Baltimore, MD which included performing stand up at ARTSCAPE, America's largest free art festival, they returned to their hometown of Los Angeles where they have now been for the last 7 years. Over that time they have explored various avenues of comedy: improv and sketch at Second City Hollywood that began with joining the cast of the main stage production Some F*cking Advice, and concluding with being a member of the house sketch team Hot Flan; various stand up shows, including Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen, Helltrap Nightmare, the Funny or Die showcase, and many self produced shows at The Elysian Theater; and multiple clown performances, specifically their hour long solo shows titled Fart Piss Puke and God Vessel. In 2020 Camirin began to fuse their appreciation for astrology, and comedic practice with their astrology based advice show Your Virgo Friend, Camirin on the streaming website Eternal Family. While producing, and hosting the show, Camirin's study of astrology, although self explored, became deeper. In 2023 Camirin began a more serious study of astrology under the tutelage of Sisterbride, née Blair Bogin. They are currently an adjunct professor at the USC School of Dramatic Arts. Core to all of their comedy is the desire to explore, and articulate their experience as a marginalized person specifically through the lens of living with faith in a Higher Picture. They believe that comedy can be a pure container for strong truths. ENJOYED THIS CONVERSATION? Head over the ART of the ZODIAC on Substack for the bonus print interview with Camirin. ABOUT CAMIRIN Camirin Farmer is an astrologer & performer from Los Angeles who got their roots in the Baltimore comedy scene. Through their stand-up comedy, writing, and acting, Camirin relays their lived experience as a black, queer, non-binary person in modern-day America in an equally direct and silly way. Gillian Bellinger is a beloved improviser, teacher and actor. She founded the now thriving Misfit Improv and Acting School in Asheville, N.C. which just celebrated its one year anniversary. I had met Gillian during the pandemic with our mutual friend, Jay Sukow. We reconnected recently at the Sketch School with Marc Warzecha in Sketch 101 and I knew I wanted to know more about this very funny lady. We talk about growing up in Texas and how the improv bug got her. Gillian's resume is amazing. She has performed as an improviser and taught at Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater in Mission IMPROVable, Comedy Sportz. She is a SAG voiceover actor and has appeared in numerous commercials, TV and film. When asked why she named her new theater “Mifit” she told us. “A bit of a misfit lies in each of us. That unique part of our spirit that delights in play. We strive at Misfit to create that same kind of place, a place to belong, to connect, to create and be a misfit.” Gillian is a generous and brilliant person and I for one am looking forward to visiting her in Asheville! https://www.misfitavl.com

Today's guest is my improv hero, David Razowsky. Dave has performed in 10 revues at Chicago's Second City performing with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Rachel Dratch. He also served as Artistic Director of The Second City Hollywood, and has conducted countless worldwide workshops and performances. Dave's approach to improv is simple: Your present awareness is the only thing you need to create compelling, smart, truthful, and surprising scenes. Period. No games, no preconceived premises, no ideas, no ego. All that matters is now. Dave also did a TEDx Talk which he titled “Life: The Product is the Process". This year, he released his long awaited book titled "A Subversive's Guide to Improvisation: Moving Beyond Yes, And", which is currently available on paperback at Amazon.com. This man has been a huge source of inspiration to me, mainly because his methodology reiterates what I firmly believe: Improv is Acting. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, nicknamed Moo. We always had fun; we'd play, make things up, sing songs, write poems… just be creative together. As she gets older, though, and reaches 100 years old, she develops dementia. Sometimes she's with us and other times not. I go over to her house one afternoon, and she's super happy and pleasant and lovely... yet she doesn't know who I am. And I'm her only grandchild! I start to get a little frustrated because I want that connection with Moo again. So I begin to bring up things from our past and ask her if she remembers what we did together. Did she remember rolling down the hill together at La Brea Tar Pits? Or that time we made a crazy salad and water went everywhere? She doesn't. As I grasp for more things, I recall one song she taught me that has two verses. One verse is very slow and methodical, the other goes very, very fast, and they're meant to be sung by two people in tandem. So I start singing the fast verse. And pretty soon without any prodding, Moo starts singing the slow verse. And for that one moment, we connect again, sharing a reality with both of us present that melts my heart. That's the power of music. It can stop time. My special guest today, Laura Hall, has spent a career in music, song, and sound. In this episode of the Storytelling School podcast, she talks about finding your voice in storytelling through her lens of Musical Improv and answers questions like: What drives a scene in an Improv story when it's combined with music--the scene or the song? When can Improv help you with your audience as a speaker or storyteller, (in non-Improv situations)? How does variety make you a better storyteller? And how can you start sharing your stories and ensure that you get helpful feedback? What you will learn in this episode: How music and Improv work together to bring stories to life Why finding and connecting to the truth of your story is vital for audience reception What you can do to change the fear story you're telling yourself before a performance Who is Laura? Laura Hall got her start as an Improv Musician performing with The Second City National Touring Company of Chicago. While in Chicago, she worked with almost every Improv theater in town and used Improv to create original musicals at The Annoyance Theater. She also played in cover and original bands, did solo piano work, played recording sessions, and taught at The Old Town School of Music. After moving to Los Angeles, Laura studied music for film and television and focused on songwriting and original musicals with Theater-A-Go-Go. She has worked with several Improv groups worldwide such as Second City Hollywood, iO West, and others, and taught Music Improv extensively with her husband Rick Hall. Laura performed on every season of the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? with hosts Clive Anderson, Drew Carey, and Aisha Tyler. She's also toured extensively with Drew Carey and the Improv All Stars, including performances at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall and a USO tour of the Middle East. In addition, she's performed with Whose Line Live at the Adelphi, the Palladium, and Royal Albert Hall theatres in London. You can find out more about Laura on her website. For this episode, Whit has a conversation with Jay Sukow — a US improviser based in LA, but in New Zealand traveling for this recording. After catching up a bit, we jumped into an amazing conversation about his favorite (by far) of over 300 10-minute scenes that he's been doing since early on in the pandemic. This is all the more impressive given that his online series “10 Minutes with…” where he improvises a 10 minute scene with someone from anywhere on the planet, has over 100,000 views. Jay is very much about positivity towards improv and saying yes within your improv. This has led to a continued desire and enthusiasm for improv and improv community online – something that we also spend some time talking about in this episode. As far as Jay's background, he's been improvising for nearly 30 years. A few of those he has trained with include Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, David Razowsky, Keith Johnstone, Del Close, Charna Halpern, Jeff Michalski and Mick Napier. He is a graduate of training centers of The Second City, The Second City NW, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago and the founder of Today Improv. He also served as the Artistic Director/Head of Training at the Improv Comedy Copenhagen Theatre, where he taught improv and sketch comedy to expats from all around the world. He previously taught for Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater, iO Chicago (where he was also head of its artistic committee), iO West and ComedySportz Chicago, and has taught at many improv festivals around the world, including the Oslo Impro Festival, the Copenhagen International Improv Festival, the Barcelona Improv Festival and the Chicago Improv Festival. He is the winner of The Golden Pineapple, awarded to the best visiting teacher at Improv Comedy Copenhagen. At the Westside Comedy Theater, Jay is in the cast of Mission Improvable and Improv Famous, an Armando-style show featuring some of the best improvisors on the planet. He is also part of the duo Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and was an ensemble member of ComedySportz Chicago, several weekend “house” improv teams at iO Chicago and many other improv and sketch comedy groups. At least, that's the in person stuff! Also, Jay is the co-host of ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. Follow Jay and Jay-related stuff at: JaySukow.com Today Improv Facebook Twitter Instagram Jay also appeared as a panelist on the first session of the Covid-19 Improv Summit and both sessions related to online improv in the Summit.

From his 10 revues at Chicago's Second City performing with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Rachel Dratch, to the 10 years he spent as Artistic Director of The Second City Hollywood, to the countless worldwide workshops and performances he's engaged in, to his TEDx Talk, “Life: The Product is the Process,” David Razowsky has developed a simple approach to improvising: Your present awareness is the only thing you need to create compelling, smart, truthful, and surprising scenes. Period. No games, no preconceived premises, no ideas, no ego. All that matters is now. David joins Stephen, Eric, and Kam to talk about: -how David realized what he wanted to do in life through answering why he feels he’s on this planet: to help people. -the uncanny similarities between improv and buddhism. -David’s TEDx talk about the value of living in the moment. -the importance of giving yourself a round of applause once in a while. Then the quartet somersaults gracefully into some self-help, including interpreting a quote from Inspirobot, what to do about a "sloppy" tattoo, advice for Channing Tatum now that his new children's book is out, and so much more.
