57th on the 1999 box office chart, For Love of the Game marked director Raimi's first foray into big-budget, mass-market filmmaking (which would ultimately pave the way for being handed the enormous task of finally bringing Spiderman to the screen in 2002) But love and baseball was very different territory for Raimi, and his inexperience in the realm of pop movie making (as well as in directing romance) proved to be a hindrance. For Love of the Game is, unofficially, the third and final entry in Kevin Costner's baseball trilogy, following 1989's Field of Dreams and 1988's Bull Durham. The film tries to balance its dual nature as a romance and a straight sports movie, and while it occasionally hits the mark, most critics agreed: For Love of the Game is pretty great when it's about the game, and not so great when it's about the love. But it's baseball season, and this was by far 1999's biggest baseball-themed movie, so we asked friend of the show - and White Sox diehard - Jacki Krestel to help us call some balls and strikes on this one!
A mix of romantic comedy and sports, Bull Durham has it all... well, except plot! Its not a big deal though because this movie is still very entertaining and makes for a very entertaining episode! In celebration of the Oscars and Best Picture nominees of 2025, Greg and Joe buckle up for Joseph Kosinski's F1 — a movie that Greg saw three times and loved every second of, while Joe wanted to "bang his head into a wall to erase the memory of watching it."Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, an 80-year-old driver (okay, he's 61, but the rookie can't tell the difference) who returns to Formula One to help his friend's struggling team and mentor hotshot Joshua Pierce (Damson Idris). It's basically Bull Durham, but with cars. Or Days of Thunder, but with Brad Pitt instead of Tom Cruise.Directed by Joseph Kosinski and shot by Top Gun: Maverick cinematographer Claudio Miranda, this $300+ million movie was filmed during actual F1 races with real crowds, real tracks, and the actors actually driving F2 cars made to look like F1 cars. Apple spent $130 million just to be able to make it happen. There are 2,500 VFX shots, mostly to swap out logos for product placement. Expensify is everywhere. Is it the most formulaic sports movie ever made? Joe thinks so.Is it the most beautiful racing movie ever put to film? Greg thinks so.Does it feature Javier Bardem saying "sometimes when you lose, you win" almost convincingly? You're darn right it does. Also: Does Brad Pitt invoke Shooter for no reason? Yes. Does the movie feature commentators who explain why everything is dramatic? Absolutely. Would it have been better with Nicolas Cage, Christopher Walken or John Tuturro?? Probably.Greg and Joe bring the chaos (Plan C), roll their eyes at the product placement, and discover that Rampage gets five stars but F1 gets... well, you'll have to listen. As with every episode, this is the conversation that needed to happen about this movie. Also: Drinking Games (logo count!), Very Important Questions, Joe's Real Back of the Box, and more.If you'd like to advertise with us or sponsor us, please e-mail greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.comSubscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcastsMore Great Bad Movies online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. In which Kid 1 joins me in reviewing BULL DURHAM (1988), from writer/director Ron Shelton. The film centers on the minor-league baseball team, the Durham Bulls, where veteran catcher Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) is assigned to mentor Ebby Calvin LaLoosh (Tim Robbins), a talented but wildly undisciplined pitching prospect. Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon), a local baseball groupie who chooses one player each season to initiate and educate, selects the young pitcher, leading to a complicated love triangle involving Crash. As the season progresses, a witty battle of wits and affections ensues between Annie and the cynical, intellectual Crash, while the three characters navigate their own feelings about baseball, sex, and growing up. The film clocks in at 1 h 48 m, is rated R and is currently available on Plex, Pluto TV, TBS, TNT, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Swing for the Fences: A Deep Dive into Bull DurhamWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell as they welcome special guest Nate McWhortor—a self-proclaimed superfan—to discuss the 1988 baseball romance Bull Durham. This isn't your typical sports movie; it's a sultry, quotable journey through minor league baseball that explores love, mentorship, and the religion of America's pastime. The Church of BaseballThe hosts dive deep into what makes Bull Durham unique among sports films. Unlike major league fantasies, this movie captures the gritty reality of minor league baseball—from shitty buses to $20,000 salaries. Guest Nate McWhortor brings real-world perspective, having worked for the Montgomery Biscuits after college, inspired by this very film. The discussion reveals how writer-director Ron Shelton's own minor league experience creates authentic moments that resonate with anyone who's lived the unglamorous side of professional sports. The trio explores the film's adult themes and memorable dialogue, from Kevin Costner's gruff wisdom as Crash Davis to Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy—a poetry-loving baseball groupie who mentors young players. They analyze the unique love triangle that develops and how the film balances romance with genuine baseball storytelling. The conversation touches on everything from the film's hard R rating to its Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.Key Discussion Points:The authenticity of minor league baseball portrayal and its impact on small communitiesKevin Costner's evolution from leading man to "grumpy Costner" in this breakout roleThe film's adult themes and quotable dialogue that baseball fans still use todayHow Bull Durham differs from other 80s baseball movies like Major League and Field of DreamsThe unique perspective of having a female narrator in a male-dominated sports genreFinal VerdictThe hosts deliver their "garter ratings" with Nate giving his favorite film a perfect 10/10, while Krissy and Nathan both land on a respectable 7/10. Despite some pacing issues in the final act, everyone agrees the film holds up as both a baseball movie and a romance, though they warn it's definitely not for young viewers despite its quotable nature.Connect with the ShowDiscover more episodes and get early, ad-free access plus bonus content by becoming a member at trustory.fm/join. In this week's Born to Watch, the lads swing for the fences with their deep dive Moneyball (2011) Review. Whitey, Dan on the Land, and Will “The Worky” take to the mound to dissect why this unconventional baseball flick, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, continues to resonate over a decade later. From the get-go, it's clear this isn't your typical sports movie review. The team kicks off with backyard renovations, foot fetish tangents, and a laugh-out-loud discussion on the bizarre world of Japanese vending machines, classic Born to Watch territory. But once they find their groove, it's all baseball, banter, and brilliance.Moneyball, based on the true story of Oakland A's GM Billy Beane, gets the full pod treatment. The trio wax lyrical about Pitt's understated performance, Hill's against-type turn as the socially awkward numbers guy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman's quietly simmering portrayal of sceptical coach Art Howe. Whitey makes the case for this being one of Pitt's finest performances, yes, even better than his Oscar-winning turn in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Dan and Will aren't far behind in their praise, though they're quick to point out the poetic license the film takes with some of its real-life counterparts.Of course, it wouldn't be Born to Watch without the gang tackling the “overs and unders.” Will throws a curveball with a surprisingly low watch count, while Whitey admits he's clocked in over 40 viewings. Dan, as always, brings the analytical fire, no surprise for a man who appreciates Michael Lewis' storytelling DNA, also behind The Big Short. The trio also tackles one of the episode's core questions: Why are baseball movies so damn good? Is it the history? The romance? The slower pace that allows for actual acting? Whatever the formula, it works. From The Natural and Field of Dreams to Major League and Bull Durham, the guys rattle off their favourites with the kind of passion you only get from true movie lovers. There's also an appreciation for the film's dry, cerebral tone. Unlike other sports flicks that rely on big plays and locker room speeches, Moneyball thrives on boardroom tension, Excel spreadsheets, and quiet moments of doubt. Yet somehow, it's riveting. It's a film about math, risk, and the emotional cost of change, and yet it's as compelling as any game-winning homer.Listeners are treated to the usual podcast hallmarks: mock trailers, roast reviews (with one critic thoroughly torn apart), and a beautifully read back-of-the-DVD synopsis that outshines the studio blurb. Whitey's disdain for the critic who panned the movie is particularly entertaining, while Dan gives a thoughtful defence of Moneyball's cinematic liberties. The episode also veers into classic BTW chaos. There's a spirited debate on the merits of Jack and Jill (spoiler: there are none), a nostalgic dive into The Inbetweeners as a sleeper hit of 2011, and an epic sidetrack into surfing journalism and Jonah Hill's transformation from comedy darling to surf-culture punching bag. It's podcast whiplash in the best possible way.As always, the “Ordinary People” segment stands out, offering a nuanced examination of the film's characters and the performances that bring them to life. The pod pays homage to Philip Seymour Hoffman, laments Jonah Hill's real-life reputation despite his on-screen brilliance, and even finds time to praise an uncredited Spike Jonze cameo that nearly steals the film.In the end, Moneyball gets the respect it deserves, a deeply human story wrapped in a sports movie shell. For the Born to Watch crew, it's not just about baseball; it's about challenging the system, betting on the misfits, and finding magic in the margins. So whether you're a sabermetrics savant or just love a good underdog story, this episode is a must-listen.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Moneyball the smartest sports movie ever made?Could you build a winning team with just data? And is Brad Pitt's Billy Beane his most underrated role?#BornToWatch #Moneyball #BradPitt #JonahHill #BaseballMovies #Sabermetrics #SportsMovies #FilmPodcast #AaronSorkin #MichaelLewis #PhilipSeymourHoffman #UnderdogStory #MovieNight

Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. How does his portrayal of Billy Chapel in For the Love of the Game compare to his other iconic baseball characters? Sports & Romance Blend: Balancing the Mound and the Heart: For the Love of the Game isn't just a baseball movie; it's a sports romance drama. The intense, almost meditative focus on Billy Chapel's perfect game on the mound is constantly interrupted by flashbacks to his tumultuous relationship with Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston). We'll analyze whether this blend enhances or detracts from both storylines. The "Perfect Game" Narrative: The Ultimate Pitching Dream: We take a look at how the film sets up and executes one of the greatest feats in all of sports, A Perfect Game. Does the film show its cards too early in the build-up? Is Billy throwing a perfect game in his final game, too much of a happy ending? Baseball Authenticity: From the Dugout to the Diamond: We'll discuss how director Sam Raimi (yes, that Sam Raimi!) uses tight shots on the mound, the escalating pressure in the dugout, and the growing excitement of the crowd to build suspense. From the pitching mechanics to the dugout banter, the film attempts to capture the feel of a real game. We'll take a look at how they made a believable major league game, the choreography of the plays, and the overall atmosphere of the stadium.Detroit Sports Talk: The story of Billy's perfect game brings back horrible memories for Dylan of a real-life near-perfect game for the Tigers. Send us a textWhat happens when American Legion baseball meets small-town Montana culture? Paul Mrazek, Director of the Montana Baseball Coaches Association and Head Coach for Cranbrook Post 24 Legion, takes us into a world where baseball thrives despite vast distances between communities and limited resources.Montana's baseball landscape is evolving rapidly. After being one of just five states without high school baseball, Montana now boasts 35 high school programs in just three years. Rather than seeing this as competition, Legion baseball has adapted, creating a seamless transition from high school to Legion seasons that gives players more opportunities to develop and compete for championships. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Paul shares the remarkable story of Allie Schroeder, a female pitcher who joined his Legion team and dominated male competition. Hitting 82 mph on the radar gun and striking out 13 batters in six innings, Allie went on to become the first female in the Canadian College Baseball League before playing professionally in Australia and representing Team Canada. When not playing baseball, she fights forest fires, sometimes throwing baseballs against school fences in remote towns during her downtime.Paul's development philosophy stands in stark contrast to today's velocity-obsessed culture. "I would rather they play for a long time than a short time," he explains, criticizing the push for young pitchers to throw harder before their bodies are ready. His approach has produced remarkable results – 43.75% of his players advance to college baseball, compared to the national average of just 7%.The magic of Canada/Montana baseball lies in its community connections and multi-sport athletes. In towns where populations barely reach 5,000, Friday night games fill wooden grandstands reminiscent of "Bull Durham," and athletes must play multiple sports for teams to exist at all. This natural cross-training seems to benefit players' development and reduce injuries compared to year-round specialization.Subscribe now to hear more stories of baseball innovation from unexpected places. How is your program developing players for long-term success rather than short-term velocity gains?Join the Baseball Coaches Unplugged podcast where an experienced baseball coach delves into the world of high school and travel baseball, offering insights on high school baseball coaching, leadership skills, hitting skills, pitching strategy, defensive skills, and overall baseball strategy, while also covering high school and college baseball, recruiting tips, youth and travel baseball, and fostering a winning mentality and attitude in baseball players through strong baseball leadership and mentality.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com
Introduction: Host Michael Rand starts with the Twins, who fell to 3-7 with another sad loss to the Royals. Rocco Baldelli was ejected, bringing to mind another angry manager: the leader of the Durham Bulls in the fictional movie Bull Durham, who lamented that baseball is a simple game. "You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." The Twins aren't good at any of those things right now. 9:00: Chris Hine joins Rand to break down the final four games of the Wolves season and the very crowded playoff race. 32:00: Florida wins the title and the Gophers land a recruit.

Schwarzman Building. From what I can tell, it didn't actually have anything to do with Andrew Carnegie, but he did donate $5 million to ensure that the New York Public Library had branch libraries in communities around the city. He also donated a lot of money to other things, that's a fun thing billionaires used to do. Read more about doing the forbidden kind of “romance stuff” in the library. Jen talked to the New York Public Library's Best New Romance List Committee Co-Chairs Kate Fais and Grace Loiacon back in February. In 2022, we recorded our “Break in case of emergency” episode, and it was in fact two sisters, Cait and Kara who requested the episode. PS: We are in emergency. Feel free to break those out now.Julie Anne Long's The Beast Takes a Bride was on our Best of 2024 episode. What I Did for a Duke is the 5th book in her Pennyroyal Green series. “It must have been a lie,” is what Jen's grandma Betty used to say if you lost your train of thought and couldn't remember what you were saying. This is a good speech from Crash Davis, the pitcher played by Kevin Costner in the 1988 movie Bull Durham (also, Nuke says “what's all that molecule stuff?” which is pretty funny considering the title of this episode). The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston had a Titian exhibition back in 2022 called Women, Myth and Power, and it seems like a thing Genevive would have liked it a lot.

Carson Lund's feature debut EEPHUS moves at the same deliberate pace as the trick pitch for which it's named, leisurely unfolding over the course of a season-ending game between two small-town recreation leagues that's also probably the last time many on the field will ever play. This week we're joined again by film critic and baseball lover Tim Grierson to discuss how EEPHUS approaches that sense of finality with low-key humor and a subtle sense of nostalgia, before bringing Ron Shelton's BULL DURHAM back on the field to compare these two films' ideas about aging, masculinity, and America's pastime, emphasis on the “past.” And in Your Next Picture Show we offer a recommendation for another unconventional baseball movie that offers a rarely seen perspective on the game, 2008's SUGAR. Quietly observing as a small-town recreation league plays out their last game of the season, and likely ever, the new EEPHUS is a feature-length subversion of “the big game,” simultaneously embracing and rejecting such baseball-movie cliches in a manner that reminded us of 1988's BULL DURHAM. We're joined this week by pinch-hitter Tim Grierson to discuss all the ways Ron Shelton's classic, often cited as the best baseball movie ever, throws out the sports-movie playbook, from its multiple protagonists and rom-com structure to its acknowledgment that baseball, like life, has an expiration date. And in Feedback, a frequent contributor returns with some bonus observations from our recent pairing of PRESENCE and THE OTHERS.
