Edified: Insights for LDS WomenEpisode 45 "3 Ways to Prepare for the Second Coming"Season 2Air Date: 21 MAR 2020Welcome to this week's episode of Edified: Insights for LDS Women. This week we take a walk through President Russell M. Nelson's message to the sisters, "Embrace the Future With Faith," from the General Women's session of General Conference, October, 2020."My dear sisters, ...you have not only the numbers but the spiritual power to change the world. .... You have all been absolutely heroic! ... You have shown that in difficult circumstances, you bravely carry on...Once again you have proven that you are literally the hope of Israel." (Russell M. Nelson)Key Points"If ye are prepared ye shall not fear." (D&C 38:30)To teach us how we can be prepared temporally and spiritually, President Nelson used the principles Captain Moroni employed for preparing his people in the book of Alma in the Book of Mormon.1. Create Places of SecurityHome -- first line of defenseStakes of Zion -- "a refuge from the storm"Temple -- a place of security unlike any otherAnywhere you can feel the presence of the Holy Ghost and be guided by Him2. Prepare Your Mind to Be Faithful to GodOur spiritual foundation must be solidOur faith increases every time we exercise our faith in GodRegular immersion in the Book of Mormon -- "The Book of Mormon is our latter-day survival guide."Yoke ourselves to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ!3. Never Stop PreparingEven when not under attack, Captain Moroni never stopped preparing his people. He never became complacent. The adversary never stops attacking, so we can never stop preparing. The more self-reliant we are--temporally, emotionally, and spiritually--the more prepared we are to thwart Satan's relentless assaults."Turbulent times are opportunities for us to thrive spiritually. They are times when our influence can be much more penetrating than in calmer times." (Nelson)DO ONE THING InvitationAnswer President Nelson's question, "What have you learned this year?" Take a moment to sit and reflect on the past year since the quarantine began last March. Write down the lessons you have learned and how your relationship to the members of the Godhead have changed throughout the year. Your answers may surprise you. I watched it so you don’t have to. We go through every talk given during General Conference of October 2019 from Oaks to Oaks and back to Oaks again, we try to identify what slipped through the cracks of media reporting on this semiannual GC. It’s a long one! Hopefully the length makes up for the month hiatus as Braden moved and I was on a 3-week road trip. Patrons of the show get an extra hour of podcast about the General Women’s session. Please get us to our next Patreon goal to make Braden suffer through the April 2020 Conference with me!!! https://www.patreon.com/GlassBoxPod Show links: Website http://www.glassboxpodcast.com/index.html Find us on Facebook and Twitter @Glass Box Podcast

The first General Women’s Session included in General Conference weekend, replacing the Saturday Priesthood Session. (Note: Part 2 will cover President Nelson’s talk on the naming guidelines of the Church, and Elder Oaks’ talks touching on political issues around marriage, sexuality, religious freedom, etc.) We are joined by guest scholars Barbara Jones Brown and Ben Spackman. The October 2018 General Conference has just concluded, but certainly not the discussion of it! Not for many, many months in our wards, stakes, and various gatherings of Mormons, and not here on Mormon Matters podcast (though we promise it won't be for "months and months")! It was a fascinating conference with quite a few different dynamics at play, and so we gathered the next evening three wonderful and brilliant church and conference watcher—Jenne Alderks, Scott Turley, and Sara Lake—to share their immediate, raw, unprocessed but very powerful takes on what they noticed and how they experienced it. What followed was a remarkably energetic, passionate, moving—as well as fun (even a slight bit snarky at times conversation). Along with Mormon Matters host, Dan Wotherspoon, each shared from her or his compassionate and empathetic heart and soul, offering gratitude and praise where they felt it was deserved (and the cases were many), and sorrow, frustration, confusion, and genuine exasperation, sorrow, and hurt over some teachings or leader choices that called for it. The discussion begins with reactions to, and wondering how the newly announced two-hour block of meetings will play out in the lives of Latter-day Saints. It then turns to key talks and features of the conference. Part 1 addresses a few talks, though some of the same ones continue to be discussed in the second part, but it primarily features an extended conversation about the General Women's Session and its messaging, both wonderful and hurtful, not to mention confusing in its mixed signaling. Part 2 features discussions of the panelists other highlights or lowlights, and is careful to be aware of those who are listening who might not have followed conference at all and are coming to this episode for their first exposure to what went on and how many our reacting to it. Dan closes this section by offering a few comments that remained on his list but were unspoken during the main recording session. We believe that anyone who listens to this episode will be captivated by the fun the panelists had together even while they were raising deeply heartfelt issues and experiences. Please tune in! You are also invited to contribute to the conversations in the Comments section for this episode at MormonMatters.org. Thank you!

This episode covers our first ever talk from the General Women’s Session and our first ever remote interview! Our guest is Aubrey Eggett, a pre-medical student at the University of Colorado at Boulder (and Wes’ sister!). She shares with us some of the unique struggles of Young Single Adult members of the church and how Sister Bonnie H. Cordon’s talk “Trust in the Lord and Lean Not” can help those members refocus on the doctrine of Christ.
