There's nothing we love more on Roots Music Rambler than digging into the stories behind songs, albums and artists, especially when geography and place have an impact there. That's why this episode stands out as one of our favorites as Tyler Grant joined us to talk about his new album, his journey through bands and solo work and more. No one digs into a story as well as Grant does and you'll note that right away as we talked about his latest single and upcoming album, Flatpicker, which is due out in March. And the album title is certainly appropriate. Grant is a National Flatpicking Champion and internationally recognized guitar virtuoso. He was also the lead singer and songwriting engine behind the band Grant Farm. It was such a pleasure to have him join us. He even became the first RMR guest to admit to committing a crime. (Ha! In an interview that highlights another behind-the-scenes heartbeat of the horse industry, Tracey has Marie Labrecque join her for a touching episode of Hitting Your Stride. Marie, the groom, barn manager, and property manager at King's Grant Farm in Caledon shows off another side of her -- horse advocate. It's been a long road for Marie, arriving in Ontario from her Quebec home where she first developed her love of horses thanks to an aunt. That has blossomed into as hands-on of a career as one could want in the horse industry, but it's also given her strong insight into caring for the horses in her barn. It's that love for equines that drives her on the good days and on the bad ones, too. Marie shares that life behind the scenes is about support - for the horse, the rider, and fellow professionals in the industry who share the same life she does. And while she enjoys her work with younger horses, it's the older ones that she finds herself more connected to: an appreciation for their life of service and the lessons they can still teach. The strongest two skills a good groom should have are observation and organization, and Marie talks about developing both as she worked at her craft. And as she wrapped her thoughts up, she gave a little advice to those who think that this is the life they want to lead.

He has produced five solo albums and six releases by Grant Farm for his own Grant Central Records. The latest 2019 release, Kanawha County Flatpicking, with West Virginia music legend Robin Kessinger, made #15 on the National Folk DJ charts. Grant Farm released their fifth full-length album, Broke In Two, in June 2019, following Kiss The Ground (2016), a concept album for the working people, which debuted at #5 on the Relix/JamBand Radio Charts. The 2014 EP release, Meeting on the Mountain, an inspired collaboration with the band Fruition, spawned the concept of the Meeting on the Mountain® LIVE Broadcast, a radio-style musical program, which Tyler hosted for eleven episodes, yielded Meeting On The Mountain LIVE, Vol. 1, a CD release of standout performances from the series with special musical guests.Tyler graduated from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2000 with a Bachelors degree in Guitar Performance. After moving to Nashville from Southern California in 2003 he joined Adrienne Young's band and toured with her for nearly two years, acting as musical director and playing on her CDs Plow the End of the Row (GRAMMY Nominated) and The Art of Virtue. In 2004 he joined Casey and Chris Henry and the Two-Stringers. In the fall of 2004 he toured China with Abigail Washburn and Friends and appeared on her Song of the Traveling Daughter CD. Bill Lloyd pulled a quick change of personnel plan on Wednesday when his electric band’s regular bassist had a baby arrive in the family. The drummerless trio of Bill, Jim Hoke on steel and Hags Haggerty on bass eased nicely through a mix of originals and covers, which is Bill’s way. “In A Perfect World” was light and danceable. “Coconut Grove” had breezy jazz chords. And the highlight was a dynamic take on the “Across The Universe,” a reminder of just what a remarkable melody that song has. Its mantra chorus, “Nothing’s gonna change my world” felt particularly calming under the circumstances. Full Review HERE.
