Aaron's brother Josiah returns to the show to discuss 1992's New Zealand comedy splatter film "Braindead" ("Dead Alive" in North America) directed by Peter Jackson with the Spoop Bois. They talk about the wild nature of Peter Jackson's career trajectory, the amount of fake blood used with the practical effects, and the insane humor and how it works. They also get into their favorable scenes, why setting the film as a 1950s period piece helps enhance certain themes, mother-son dynamics, and many other aspects of the movie. Josiah, Aaron and Derek are not dead exactly, they're just...sort of rotting. Lindsay is joined by Nora Koeppel, the daughter of author Adolf J. Koeppel to discuss his book, “The Lark's Call,” the gripping crime novel based on the Hinterkaifeck murders. Trigger Warning: This episode discusses incest. Underneath this crucifix, a peasant family of five and their maid lie in a family grave. All of them had their skulls smashed in. The extremely brutal murderer did not even stop at Josef, who was only two and a half years old. He killed the boy with a single blow through the roof of the pram. The criminal police assumed a sixfold robbery-murder, although all the money was left behind. The neighbours of the murdered family, however, suspected a man from their village of having committed the heinous act. He wanted to marry the beautiful farmer's daughter, but her father did not allow it. Did that man kill the whole family out of revenge, or did someone else have a dirty hand in it? Someone who was so close to the murdered family that no one paid any attention to him... Dark History of South Table Mountain (Colorado)

Send us a textHiking is my happy place. And recently I've fallen in love with South Table Mountain in Golden, Colorado. It's sister, North Table Mountain in my estimation gets five times the foot and bicycle traffic. A month ago, I found a trailhead for South Table that has only a few parking spaces, which guaranteed a peaceful hike! I've done it four times since. My favorite path takes me along an historic ditch, which no longer carries water, and then I take a right and follow the erosion up the side of the mountain. It's a popular place for mountain biking. I watch them plummet the steep elevations and soar over the natural berms. What a thrill. The first time I climbed out of that notch I was exhausted. Surrounded by fog, I drank water and looked ahead on the trail, seeing the silhouette of a man. I was startled. I'd had the trail to myself all morning. I continued toward the man, and soon made out antlers and the long, lean, limbs of a man. It looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. Heart pounding, I kept going, snapping a picture with my phone camera. Finally, feet away, I saw that it was a sculpture of a Native American! He had a deer with antlers draped around his neck, carrying his successful hunt's prize to share with his community. I laid a rock on the base of the sculpture and went up the rest of the trail. That next stretch of the trail? Check out my Instagram feed, because it is a skinny path that leads up an ancient sand dune, I'm talking 200-plus million years old! Hundreds of millions of years ago Colorado was underwater, the floor of a landlocked sea. This took no imagining as I stood on this dried out ocean floor. There were even white shell bits among the petrified dunes. This haunting experience brought me back again and again. At night, I'd fall asleep studying maps as I searched for a new, fresh route up and around South Table Mountain. But after my most recent visit, something happened to me that felt like a scene straight out of a horror movie. And it led me to research the history of South Table Mountain. Soon, I found myself hiking to Castle Rock on weary legs and praying for peace and love to heal the land. Two days later, I'd be back on the slopes to offer a flower to a murder victim. But I'm getting ahead of myself. What to Buy/Read/Listen/Watch NEXTRead about the woman of South Table Mountain, and other meticulously researched books by Carol Turner's on AmazonRecent Trouble at South Table Mountain (2024)Woman's remains found on South Table Mountain - blogpostHave you tried the GoodPods app yet? If you've listened to Roots Music Rambler much at all you know Frank and Falls are suckers for the new wave of retro-sounding Americana and Country artists. (See our previous episode with Kimmi Bitter.) When we first heard Logan Ledger, the same fascination kicked in.  With sounds reminiscent of Marty Robbins, Jim Croce and The Byrds, it was easy to see why this Bay Area product was reclaiming the title of purveyor of California Country in early album reviews. His debut record in 2020 was produced by T. Bone Burnett. His sophomore effort, “Golden State,” was produced by none other than Shooter Jennings. And it's magnificent.  Ledger joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about his albums, his sound and how a long-time Nashville singer-songwriter found his way into the professional musician space by finding and amplifying his own style.  Falls shares his thoughts on a weird Jim Morrison documentary and he and Frank offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week as well. Lindsay is joined by author Samuel Marquis to discuss his book, “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal,” which will be released on May 13, 2025, by Diversion Books. Captain Kidd has captivated imaginations for over 300 years and inspired many stories about pirates, but was he a criminal? Just how many ships did he plunder, how many men did he force to walk the plank, and how many throats did he slit? Or is the truth more inconvenient, that he was a buccaneer's worst nightmare, a revered pirate hunter turned fall guy for scheming politicians?  In “Captain Kidd,” Marquis reveals the real story. Kidd was an English-American privateer and a leading New York husband and father, dubbed “trusty and well-beloved” by the King of England himself and described by historians as a “worthy, honest-hearted, steadfast, much-enduring sailor” who was the “victim of a deliberate travesty of justice.” With honors far more esteemed than the menacing Blackbeard or any other sea rover at the turn of the 17th century, how can Kidd be considered both a gentleman and pirate, both hero and villain? The ninth-great-grandson of legendary privateer Captain William Kidd, Samuel Marquis, M.S., P.G., is a professional hydrogeologist, expert witness, and bestselling, award-winning author of 12 American nonfiction-history, historical fiction, and suspense books, covering primarily the period from colonial America through WWII. His American history and historical fiction books have been #1 Denver Post and Amazon bestsellers, and have received multiple national book awards in both fiction and nonfiction categories, including the Kirkus Reviews and Foreword Reviews Book of the Year, American Book Fest and USA Best Book, Readers' Favorite, and the Colorado Book Awards. His historical titles have also garnered glowing reviews from #1 bestseller James Patterson, maritime historians, U.S. military veterans, Kirkus Reviews, and Foreword Reviews (5 Stars). His pirate book, “Blackbeard: The Birth of America,” has been an Amazon #1 Bestseller in U.S. Colonial Period History. The Marquis lives with his wife in Louisville, Colorado, where they raised their three children. In this episode of Songfacts Podcast, we interview Steve Bardwil, who's releasing his debut album Nothing But Time—a soulful, genre-blending record produced by 11-time Grammy winner Joe Chiccarelli. With tracks like “Wonder of It All,” Bardwil brings a reflective, heartfelt sound that's clearly rooted in real experience. What makes his journey even more compelling is the path he took to get here. Before stepping into the studio, Steve spent over 20 years as chief counsel for Disney films, managing legal affairs for some of the biggest productions in Hollywood. But eventually, the pull of songwriting and storytelling took center stage. In this episode, we talk about the moment he knew it was time to leave the legal world behind, the process of creating his first album, and how an encounter with Jimmy Buffett inspired him to pursue his music career.
