In recent years, the quest for sustainable energy solutions has led to remarkable innovations in photovoltaic technology, particularly in the niche of indoor applications. One of the most significant advancements in this field has been made by G-Lyte, a French company co-founded by Franck Barath, which specializes in indoor photovoltaics. This technology promises to revolutionize the way we power our everyday devices, from smart home systems to small electronics, by harnessing ambient light more efficiently than ever before.Understanding Indoor PhotovoltaicsTraditionally, photovoltaic cells have been designed for outdoor use, where they can capture sunlight effectively. However, indoor environments present unique challenges, primarily due to the lower intensity of light available. Conventional indoor photovoltaics have struggled with efficiency, typically achieving only between 7% to 11% efficiency, which is insufficient for practical applications beyond powering simple devices like calculators. G-Lyte's innovative approach has broken these barriers, achieving efficiency rates of 25% to 28% and ensuring stability over a remarkable lifespan of more than 15 years. The Science Behind the InnovationThe journey to this breakthrough began in 2011 when G-Lyte embarked on extensive research to understand the degradation processes of indoor photovoltaic cells. By identifying the factors that lead to inefficiency and instability, the team developed proprietary solutions that not only enhance the performance of these cells but also ensure their reliability under various environmental conditions. This research culminated in two international patents, marking significant milestones in the evolution of indoor photovoltaic technology. What sets G-Lyte's product apart is its ability to operate efficiently under high lux conditions and elevated temperatures, up to 70°C. This resilience is crucial for indoor applications, where lighting and temperature can vary significantly. The technology's capacity to maintain performance in low-light conditions - operating effectively at as little as 20 lux, comparable to a clear night sky - further expands its potential use cases.Practical Applications and Market PotentialG-Lyte's indoor photovoltaic technology has vast implications. Its primary applications target the growing market of smart homes, smart buildings, and smart industries, where energy autonomy is increasingly in demand. By integrating these advanced photovoltaic cells into devices such as sensors, remote controls, keyboards, and electronic shelf labels (ESLs), manufacturers can significantly extend battery life or eliminate the need for batteries altogether. For instance, in a typical convenience store with around 20,000 ESLs, the challenge of changing batteries every two to five years can be daunting. By utilizing G-Lyte's technology, these devices could potentially become self-sustaining, reducing maintenance efforts and enhancing operational efficiency. Beyond retail, the technology holds promise for connected locks, beacons, and other smart devices requiring a reliable power source. The Future of Indoor PhotovoltaicsAs the demand for energy-efficient solutions continues to grow, G-Lyte's innovative indoor photovoltaic technology stands at the forefront of this transition. The integration of these cells into everyday products not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also addresses practical challenges faced by consumers and businesses alike. Conclusion: Indoor Photovoltaic Changing the Way We Power Small DevicesIn conclusion, the advancements in indoor photovoltaic technology developed by G-Lyte represent a significant leap forward in energy efficiency. By transforming the way we harness ambient light, this innovation paves the way for a future where our devices can operate autonomously, thereby reducing reliance on traditional power sources and contributing to a more sustainable world. As we look ahead, the potential applications of this technology will likely expand, further embedding renewable energy solutions into the fabric of our daily lives.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 12, 2025 is: leitmotif LYTE-moh-teef noun A leitmotif is a dominant recurring theme—something (such as a melody, an idea, or a phrase) repeated many times throughout a book, story, opera, etc. // The overcoming of obstacles and a love of theater are the two leitmotifs of her autobiography. See the entry > Examples: “[F. Scott] Fitzgerald considered his year and a half spent on The Vegetable a complete waste, but I disagree, for he followed it with a new novel written with all the economy and tight structure of a successful play—The Great Gatsby. Both The Vegetable and Gatsby shared the theme of the American Dream (first as a spoof for a comedy, finally as the leitmotif of a lyric novel). I don't think there has ever been a more elusive, mysterious, intriguing character than Gatsby. He's pure fiction—and pure Fitzgerald: the hopeful, romantic outsider looking in.” — Charles Scribner III, Scribners: Five Generations in Publishing, 2023 Did you know? The English word leitmotif (or leitmotiv, as it is also spelled) comes from the German Leitmotiv, meaning “leading motive,” and is formed from the verb leiten (“to lead”) and the noun Motiv (“motive”). In its original sense, the word applies to opera music; it was first used by writers interpreting the works of composer Richard Wagner, who was famous for associating a melody with a character or important dramatic element. Leitmotif is still commonly used with reference to music and musical drama but it is now also used more broadly to refer to any recurring theme in the arts—“The Imperial March,” heard in the Star Wars film franchise whenever Darth Vader appears on screen, for example—or in everyday life.

PERIODICAL, Director Lina Lyte Piloplyte and Executive Producer Amanda Spain's new feature documentary from XTR and MSNBC Films, tells the unexpected story of the human body by exploring the marvel and mystery of the menstrual cycle, from first period to last. But this is not your middle school sex-ed class. Bringing you stories from soccer champion Megan Rapinoe who reveals how members of the U.S. Soccer team track their cycles when training for the Women's World Cup (which they won), to scientists who are discovering the power and possibilities of stem cells found in period blood, to young activists flipping the bill on period tax one state at a time, we uncover the shocking truths, challenge taboos, and celebrate the untapped potential of this special nutrient-dense blood. Through innovative mixed media storytelling, "Periodical" is for everyone who wants to know more about the menstrual cycle, and especially for those who don't. In our era of social media-empowered feminism, after centuries of societal-enforced stigma, menstruation has finally begun to bleed out into the mainstream. We're finally using red liquid instead of blue in period product ads, seeing beauty influencers use their period blood for facials on social media, and even the most daring period scenes are being depicted on tv — but we still know alarmingly little when it comes to menstruation. Director Lina Lyte Plioplyte and Executive Producer Amanda Spain join us to talk about the long over-do recognition that menstruation, should never be a reason for shame, discrimination or become a barrier to a full life. For more go to: happyperiod.org Bloody. Beautiful. Normal. “Periodical” airs Sunday, Nov. 19 at 10 p.m. ET on MSNBC and is streaming on Peacock. Periodical at the Los Feliz 3 - October 14, 15, & 18

Big life lessons from Bruce's journey Bruce's ideas for supporting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in the world Importance of leadership for diversity A look into diversity and inclusion within Microsoft Bruce's take on the ingredients for success and happiness What helped Bruce defy the odds Order Bruce's Book HERE About Bruce Jackson: Bruce Jackson is the Associate General Counsel for Microsoft and a former entertainment and tax attorney. In his stirring memoir of grit and perseverance NEVER FAR FROM HOME: My Journey from Brooklyn to Hip Hop, Microsoft, and the Law (Atria Books; Hardcover; February 7, 2023; $28.00; ISBN: 9781982191153), by Bruce Jackson -- with a Foreword by Microsoft's Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith – is his inspirational story of his rise from childhood poverty in pre-gentrified New York City to a stellar career at the top of the technology and music industries. However, this is not a “corporate memoir,” but rather the memoir of a Black man from meager origins and an imperfect background who reached great heights in corporate America. Born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Bruce moved to the infamous NYCHA projects -- Amsterdam Houses -- in Manhattan, as a teenager, where he was harassed by street cops and seduced by drug dealers. He found a way out, graduated from Hofstra University then Georgetown Law School, and cut his teeth working in entertainment law. As an entertainment attorney he represented hip hop royalty including LL Cool J, Heavy D, Busta Rhymes, M.C. Lyte, Jazzy Jeff, and Little Kim. Jackson transitioned from entertainment into a wildly successful corporate law career. The book offers lessons on life but also lessons in business. NEVER FAR FROM HOME reveals the ups and downs of an incredible journey, the obstacles overcome, and valuable business and life lessons learned along the way. Writer John Barry joins us on the podcast to talk his new book, "Levon Helm: Rock, Roll & Ramble—The Inside Story of the Man, the Music and the Midnight Ramble."Ringo wrote the foreword, and Roger Waters, Graham Nash and Warren Haynes are among those interviewed. Larry Campbell, who served as Levon Helm Band Musical Director and produced or co-produced Levon's three Grammy-winning solo albums, which were inspired by the Rambles, had this to say about the book:"John Barry was the perfect 'fly on the wall' during this great last chapter and final curtain call in Levon Helm's life. He was the quintessential observer from the early days of the Midnight Ramble to the end and has brilliantly captured the details and the spirit of that wonderful timein this book."Born in the Bronx, raised in the New York City suburbs of Rockland County and living in New York State's Hudson Valley since 1990, John W. Barry is an award-winning journalist with a passion for writing and a love of music. This combination has brought John to some pretty incredible places and put him in the company of some incredible people. From Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and many places in between, John's relentless pursuit of the stories, the people and the circumstances that define the world around us has enabled him to assemble the puzzle pieces of a compelling tale or two over the course of his lifetime.John is a very proud graduate of Clarkstown South High School and the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he earned a journalism degree. The latter is what brought John to Ulster County, New York, and set him on his path to Woodstock, Levon Helm Studios and the Midnight Ramble. As a journalist for the USA Today Network's Poughkeepsie Journal in Dutchess County, New York, John found himself in the center of Levon's Midnight Ramble house concerts, getting to know Levon, his band, his crew, his management team, Team Levon and, of course, his fans.Prior to serving as the music writer for the Poughkeepsie Journal, John wrote for his hometown newspaper, The Journal News, as a police reporter, covering municipal beats and writing extensively about local angles to the Northern Ireland peace process. John has also freelanced for RollingStone.com and since leaving the USA Today Network at the end of 2020, has been working as a freelance writer and blogger, and editorial consultant. In the wake of the publication of this book, John is already working on his next project and continuing to do what he enjoys most, hiking and camping in the Hudson Valley's stunning terrain, cooling off in its swimming holes and breathing in deeply its crisp night air.Purchase a copy of the Levon book here. Back in the early 70s, drummer Mike Clark and bassist Paul Jackson were best friends living in East Oakland, playing flatbed gigs at Black Panther rallies, and generally raising hell. Cooking was not their forte, so the barbecue joint next door became a hangout. Mrs. Jones (of Everett and Jones) asked them to write a song to promote the spot, and they came up with the first version of ‘God Made Me Funky.' Bill Summers worked with Jackson at the local record store, and he jumped at an opportunity to open a show for Herbie Hancock in the Bay Area. He got the call to audition for Herbie's band, joining Herbie for the album “Headhunters“ and many more. Hancock took a new turn in the 70s, handpicking a new band and sound that would ‘take some more of the earth and feel a little more tethered.' The result was the first platinum-selling Jazz album in history. The lineup on that first album: Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Mike Clark replaced Mason afterward, and the lineup continued on several key Herbie Hancock releases such as “Thrust” and “Flood.”Mike Clark and Bill Summers are two of a kind - they share a love for music that never dies. The pair kept The Headhunters alive, releasing two albums “Survival of the Fittest” in 1975 and “Straight From The Gate” in 1977, with Herbie as a featured guest. The chemistry between them is undeniable: They have persevered for over 40 years through industry setbacks, the death of band members, and more, to stay true to their mission with the same energy and zeal that the music demands. “We're not in a gym, this isn't a competition… this is art. What Bill and I and The Headhunters do is experience the moment and explore. After the count, we're in that moment, and there is no other. This is an act of passion, of love for humanity, and for our planet.” -Mike Clark“We live this every day. We have some secrets to give to the youth of the world. We're not musicians, we are physicians - we heal people.” - Bill Summers11 years after their last release, The Headhunters are set to release “Speakers In The House,” a new full-length album featuring Summers, Clark, NEA Jazz master Donald Harrison, Stephen Gordon, bassist Reggie Washington, and organist Jerry Z. The album also features Scott Roberts and Fode Sissoko on kora. The Headhunters spirit is alive and well on the album, which fuses the band's African and New Orleans influences with their ever-present technical jazz-funk, rooted in music history and growing in the present moment. ‘We've always made a statement as The Headhunters, and I'm looking at our longevity. Every time we've dropped notes on the wax, it has value and can influence people and change lives.” - Bill Summers“Speakers In The House” is set for release on November 4, 2022.Lean more about Lyte.Find more great podcasts from Osiris Media, the leading storyteller in music.
