We're excited to welcome back Kevin McHugh, a legend in the HALO sector and a key player in helping reinvent the Atlantic Club. (Check out his first episode here if you missed it.) Host Pete Moore sits down with Kevin and delves into how the Atlantic Club took the challenging COVID-19 shutdown as an opportunity to completely rethink and transform their business model and facilities. Kevin provides an in-depth look at the strategic decisions and renovations that not only helped them recover post-COVID but have also positioned them for future success. From creating a spacious new fitness layout to establishing a booming pickleball center, Kevin reveals the honest conversations, tough decisions, and innovative thinking that went into revitalizing the space. This episode is packed with insights on leadership, member engagement, and trend-setting in the fitness industry. "If you left the club in 2022, the new Atlantic Club today is nothing like it was. We're a brand new club, brand new progress, brand new facilities, brand new equipment . . .  and it was all about being ready so we could be where we need to be in 2025," stresses McHugh. Key themes discussed Adapting business during COVID, modifying facilities for safety. Transitioning the space to unify community and improve facilities. Listed 20 areas of potential complaints, addressed each. Decision making: Data, gut, conviction, and trust your community. Advocating for Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA) and networking for trends. Excited for the future of Health and Fitness Association. A few key takeaways: 1. The pandemic provided an involuntary pause that allowed the Atlantic Club to rethink and redesign their entire business model and campus layout. This included implementing social distancing measures by moving the free weight equipment to a separate area and creating spacious cardio and group exercise rooms. 2. Management did not shy away from making bold decisions, such as converting the gymnasium into a spinning studio and later into a comprehensive fitness area. They anticipated and managed short-term pain for long-term gain, with the goal of better positioning themselves for the future. 3. Kevin emphasized the importance of effectively communicating changes to both staff and members. They involved managers in the planning process, addressed potential complaints ahead of time, and made sure everyone understood the long-term vision and benefits of the renovations. 4. The Atlantic Club's approach was holistic, addressing not only fitness but also mental wellness, refreshment areas, and personal training. The introduction of services like a high-intensity studio, personalized training studios, and pickleball courts (in place of a turf center) showcased their commitment to offering varied experiences for members. 5. McHugh also underscored the value of staying connected with industry peers through platforms like the Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA.) Leveraging insights and trends from other successful operators helped refine their strategy and supported the rationale for their bold moves. Tipping culture could be becoming more popular here.  Numbers from the financial information site, Banked, suggest 60% of Kiwis sometimes or often leave a tip.  Almost 47% of New Zealanders think tipping is a good thing, while 34% say the opposite.  Banked Head of Publishing Kevin McHugh told Mike Hosking that tipping culture here has primarily been affected by the United States and as a result has become more popular.  He said that the cost-of-living crisis does play into it, and those who tend to tip are the ones who have higher salaries.   LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the storied days of vinyl, snooty record shop staff, and white label promos, the diligent producer would cultivate many aliases, seemingly at least one for every nuance of his studio output. With DSP tagging and the endless collaborations that are a featured of today's recorded music, does that approach make sense anymore? That is a paraphrasing of my first question to Kevin McHugh, aka Ambivalent, aka LA-4A, on today's podcast. You'll have to tune in to get his answer in full, but let's just say he feels justified in his recently-released album under that second alias, entitled Folio. It's a great piece of work, and we discuss it, in addition to continuing the conversation in recent episodes on the topic of Minimal, the state of the Techno scene today, nostalgia in dance music, and much else besides. This was a great conversation in which I learnt a lot about Kevin as a producer and as a person. You're going to enjoy it! Listen to the audio above. What do high crime rate area, bad neighbours and a smelly home have in common? They are the most common property pitfalls for New Zealander house buyers.Over 2190 New Zealanders were surveyed by independently-owned mortgage comparison site, Finder, about key features that are turn offs when they are buying a property. The top turn-offs was asbestos in a property: 55 per cent of buyers would not be okay with that. An above-average neighbourhood crime rate would send nearly half of buyers (49 per cent) away.About one in three Kiwis would reject a home with bad neighbours - and that includes if the home was close to a noisy pub or bar, the survey found. But the number four problem that turns off nearly two in five buyers is easier to fix: bad smells from pets, cigarettes or dampness.Finder's New Zealand publisher, Kevin McHugh, says such pitfalls can shave thousands of dollars in value off the price of a home.He says when planning on selling your property, take a step back and think of it from the buyers' perspective.“Things like bad smells, asbestos or a lack of natural lighting are unattractive to potential buyers, but these can usually be rectified before going to market,” McHugh says.“It's often the case of a little bit of pain for long-term gain – forking out to fix the issue beforehand can significantly increase the value of your home,” he adds.A lack of parking (33 per cent), being close to a highway or main road (23 per cent) and being located in an industrial area (21 per cent) are also some of the top property turn offs for New Zealanders.McHugh says that there are opportunities to be had for prospective buyers, provided they're realistic about fixing some issues.“Common issues like living on a main road or near a noisy venue can reduce the price of a property. But if you're prepared to think outside the square, you may be able to nab a bargain."For instance, installing high fencing can help to soundproof homes on a main road, and a rented garage can supplement a lack of parking."He adds it is worth seeking finance pre-approval for a property before you begin searching, so when the perfect house does spring up, you'll be ready to act right away.Bindi Norwell, Chief Executive at REINZ says: “What attracts an individual or a family to a property can be quite subjective depending on a number of factors such as age, stage, religion or price bracket. For example, some people would have issues living near to a cemetery for religious reasons and for others it's not even an issue.“Issues that can potentially impact health and safety such as asbestos are high on people's list, but we were surprised that plaster/leaky buildings didn't make the list as for some people, particularly in the Auckland and Wellington markets this can in some instances be an issue.“We were surprised that being close to a major road or highway was so high on the list – as for many people, particularly in bigger cities, being close to motorways is seen as an advantage in order to cut down on commute times. And more and more we're hearing that for those who have chosen to move further afield post-lockdown, having a rural property close to a major road or a motorway can be an absolute must.“However, there are some things that can't be fixed such as being located in an industrial area or being on a flight path, and in that case it might be addressing things such as double glazing to reduce noise pollution that could make the difference between your home and the property next door,” she said.Norwell added that vendors should work with a licenced real estate agent who will be able to provide feedback on both positives and some things that may need work on the house, such as replacing the carpet due to smells.By OneRoof

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are at the center of this massive endeavor, and have enlisted labs around the world to help solve intractable problems in the developing world, including work was recently published in Science Translational Medicine. The technology involves a microneedle patch that can administer a standard vaccine, painlessly, but also leave an invisible vaccination record right on the skin. Meaning those who need vaccines can get them, even in the most remote locations, and those who don't need them, can prove they are protected without the need for paper or even digital records. You could carry the proof of prophylaxis with you, invisibly, as long as the vaccine protects you. As a personal fan, I was really excited to catch up with him to find out about the long and colourful journey that has led him to be one of the most respected figures in techno. Ambivalent Is Certain About His Life After Minimal Techno Kevin McHugh spreads his wings with new labels and artistic ideas. Kevin McHugh didn't set out to be a techno musician. But when his work in the world of NYC's modern art scene crossed over into the realm of minimal techno in the early 00s, he caught a wave that took him all the way to Berlin as part of Richie Hawtin's Minus label. He was soon traveling the world under the name Ambivalent, spreading the gospel of Berlin's trendy ambience with compatriots like Magda, Marc Houle and Heartthrob. "It became a big thing on [Minus] when that label was a big thing," he says modestly of his 2007 breakout single, "R U OK," a prime example of the drugged-yet-cheeky, plink-plonky sound that took over techno a decade ago. Since departing Minus in 2012, Kevin has debuted two new aliases — the house-inspired Amber and gritty LA-4A — and launched his own Delft and Valence labels and to release a broader palette of dance music than the haus of Hawtin had allowed for in the past. He's also continued his Ambivalent guise, partnering up with techno stars Sven Vath, Josh Wink and Sasha to release music on their Cocoon, Ovum and Last Night On Earth Imprints respectively. Always self-examining and sometimes painfully honest, Kevin explains the twists and turns it's taken him to reach this point in his career, with a critical eye towards both his past and his future.

Kevin McHugh a.k.a Ambivalent has spent the last decade living in either Berlin or New York. In a sense, these two metropoleis represent the contradiction at the heart of his Ambivalent persona. On the one hand the reckless freedom and hedonism of the Berlin subculture, on the other the more considered, conceptual approach of its New York counterpart. As a result his unique sound lies somewhere between the two, a precarious balancing act that manages to infuse stripped down, finked up minimal techno with a distinct sense of purpose. Due to be over in India over the coming weekend, we did, well, what we usually do and got him to sit down and make us an exclusive mix for Wild City. It wasn't easy - he's a busy man! But you know what, he came through in the end. "Sometimes I rarely get moments to just sit and focus on one thing. Time on flights is often my best way to get some thinking done, or make a mix. This podcast was made in one of those moments. I did my best to fit a balance of sounds that I play in my sets from bouncy to dark, so it's a decent representation of what you might hear in one of my DJ sets." - Ambivalent #025 in the Wild City series is raw, heavy, and doesn’t once consider taking things lightly. The Berlin based producer has released a steady stream of underground techno records over the years; they’re as deep and minimal as they come and despite all those gloriously manipulated samples, there’s nothing big room about them. They're basically complete murder on the dancefloor. Ambivalent's knack for simplicity and musicality is a huge part of what makes his production so enjoyable. Based on this mix, it seems that his DJ mixes employ a similarly effective approach - an ever evolving, dynamic and exciting producer that we're more than excited to see grace Indian shores.
