Send us a textMusic has been an important part of Laurie Dameron's life since childhood. Her mom started teaching her how to sing as a toddler, even teaching her and her sister three-part harmonies to sing on car trips. She started piano lessons around the age of four, but as a child, she didn't like being told what to do. Her mother encouraged her to try various endeavors, including ballet, tap dancing, acting, and swimming. However, none of them truly stuck with her. When Dameron was around seven years old, her mother started taking guitar lessons. As a form of rebellion, Dameron would sneak into her mother's room and teach herself how to play the guitar. From there, she completely fell in love with performing. She played her first gig at a brewery in Pearl Street Mall with two friends from junior high and high school, brothers Dave and Drew Emmitt, with the latter later becoming one of the “Big Three” members of Leftover Salmon.Dameron went to college at Adams State University in Alamosa, and for her last two years there, she ran the open mic at the school. She posted flyers, ran marketing, and made sure to advertise the event during her time as a DJ for the local radio station KASF-FM.During her time at Adams State, she toured with ASC Big Band Jazz Ensemble. As part of that group, she performed twice in the Greeley Jazz Festival, where her playing impressed virtuoso jazz guitar player Johnny Smith. She briefly received free guitar lessons from Smith at his music store in Colorado Springs, but ultimately moved to Summit County in 1983.To learn more about Laurie Dameron's life and career (as well as her connection to the host of this podcast), then be sure to tune in to this episode of Music of the Mountains!Call it A Day: https://youtu.be/KQRdFLbDy1M Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear Podcast, featuring the news and culture from peak to peak!If you want to be featured in the podcast, contact the host at media@themountainear.com!SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the coupon code PODCAST for A 10% DISCOUNT for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS! We are extremely excited to have Vince Herman as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Things are just more fun when Vince Herman is around, and since helping co-found Leftover Salmon over a quarter century ago, Leftover Salmon shows have always been the most fun. Herman moved to Boulder, CO from Morgantown, West Virginia, where he was attending West Virginia University, in 1985. On his first night in town, he met his future bandmate Drew Emmitt at a show for Emmitt's group at the time, the Left Hand String Band. The two struck up an immediate friendship. For a short time after moving to Boulder, Herman joined The Left Hand String Band, marking the first time the two would play together in a band. Herman soon left The Left Hand String Band to pursue his own musical vision. He formed the Salmon Heads, a Cajun-jug band that tried to wrangle all of Herman's disparate musical influences, Cajun, Calypso, Ska, and bluegrass into a coherent musical statement. His vision was fully realized on New Year's Eve 1989 when the Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band united forces for a show.We catch up with Vince to talk about dealing with coming out the other side of quarantine, creating the New High Hawks album, what it means to be a psychedelic chef, finding others that share your passions, making a new solo album, why Charlie Daniels was a hippie, and so much more! For more on Leftover Salmon head over to: www.leftoversalmon.comCheck out The High Hawks at: www.lohirecords.com/artist/the-high-hawksSONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE: 'Talk About That' off The High Hawks self-titled album 'The High Hawks'SONG AT THE END OF THE EPISODE: 'Brand New Good Old Days' off Leftover Salmon's album 'Brand New Good Old Days'Please do us a solid and leave us a 5 star review on Apple PodcastsCheck out the No Simple Road YouTube channel and subscribe!Become a Patron of No Simple Road On Patreon.comFREE SHIPPING FROM Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:ANDREW HENDRYXOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. My guest today is Leftover Salmon bassist, Greg Garrison. He was also a founding member of Punch Brothers, and has played alongside some of the best musicians in the bluegrass, jazz, and Americana worlds. His performance credits include: Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Chris Thile, Bryan Sutton, Jerry Douglas, and Sam Bush. I first met Greg as a student at CU Denver back in 2012. I was in my junior year as a jazz piano major, and Greg was filling in for a teacher who was out on sabbatical. He taught my jazz ensemble course and was such a great fit that he ended up staying on at CU Denver. He still teaches there today. This episode is part 2/2 of our celebration of Leftover Salmon's new album, "Brand New Good Old Days" (May 7). Last week I chatted with founding member, Drew Emmitt. Greg was not just a band member on this record, but also the producer. In our conversation, we chat in depth about the making and production of this project. He also offers some insight on balancing teaching with performing, splitting up with the Punch Brothers, and what he learned about his instrument from playing with Lyle Lovett. To wrap up, Greg talks about current projects he's working on, including a newly released collaboration with Grant Gordy, Alez Hargreaves, and Joe K. Walsh entitled, "Bluegrass and the Abstract Truth." My guest today is founding member of Leftover Salmon, Drew Emmitt. The band formed in 1989, and has spent the last three decades successfully blending bluegrass, rock, country, and Cajun/Zydeco music. On the heels of Leftover Salmon's new album, "Brand New Good Old Days" (May 7), Drew and I chat about the recording process, the interesting choice in cover songs on the record, how the industry has changed, and what it's like to leave a legacy as one of the pioneering bands in their genre. Andy Thorn has been the banjo player for the Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass Jam Band, Leftover Salmon, for over 10 years. However, he has been preparing nearly his entire life, as he has both loved and dedicated himself to music since he was very young. His positive attitude, eclectic musical background, and vast banjo knowledge has allowed Andy to play in bands with current members of Greensky Bluegrass, Mandolin Orange, The Infamous Stringdusters, Che Apalache and the Jon Stickley Trio, to name a few. Recently Andy put out an EP with his former LOS pianist/keyboardist Erik Deutsch. Deutsch & Thorn's "Tangled Sea," successfully marries the banjo and the piano, and highlights Andy Thorns ability to play banjo in ever changing settings and styles. The album is available at andythornmusic.com, along with other merch, and updates on his music and live performances, so please check it out. Also, please join me as we take a deep dive into Andy's early years, and his serendipitous path to ending up in a band, which he was also a huge fan of growing up. Please stop by livefrombanjo.com, and become a "LFB Band Member" and/or follow us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. Thanks!
Featuring killing new music from Bay Area amigos Scott Amendola and Wil Blades, fantastic trio work from Brooklyn's Danny Fox, a hot new single from Denver musical tour-de-force Kim Dawson, new world-jazz from old Boulder collaborator and guitarist/composer extraordinaire Bill Kopper, two stellar tracks from legit NYC cats Jesse Harris and Mike McGinnis, Drew Emmitt's tribute to Col. Bruce Hampton, and the first single from the Dixie Chicks' new album.
The band Leftover Salmon has been a stalwart in the “jam band” scene since the early 1990s. Formed in Colorado, the group has released as many as 13 albums and toured extensively all over the world. There influences are myriad. Their playing ability and inventiveness in live performance have made them a celebrated music festival act. I had a chance to chat with Drew Emmitt about their most recent record “Show Me Something Higher” as well as their show coming up at the Crystal Bay Club at Lake Tahoe on Friday March 6 and the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on March 7.
Episode 120: Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt met in 1985 on Vince's first night in Boulder, CO and formed a lifelong musical bond. With banjo player Mark Vann they merged two bands into one and became Leftover Salmon at the dawn of 1990. And in the 30 years since they've earned the respect and partnership of the highest levels of the bluegrass and acoustic world while playing music that's as adventuresome as it is laid back. Herman and Emmitt marked the anniversary with a duo acoustic tour. Craig caught up with them at Nashville's City Winery for a wide ranging talk about their years together.
Tyler Grant has a world of experience in the music industry. He's won first prize in the flatpicking competition at Winfield, toured as a lead guitarist with Abigail Washburn, Drew Emmitt, and The Emmitt Nershi Band and is going on a decade strong with his own project, Grant Farm. In this episode, we learn about Tyler's story, as well as why Grant Farm failed to cut one of my songs on their last record. We even get a live flatpickin' performance from one of the very best at the end. **Grant Farm's kickstarter for their forthcoming album, Broke In Two is now live at this link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2135802094/grant-farm-broke-in-two
Drew Emmitt is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Leftover Salmon this New Year's Eve with fellow founder Vince Herman, Andy Thorn and company but first he stopped by the show to share his love of playing, his thoughts on turning thirty again, our late friend Jeff Austin and much more. It was my pleasure to have this legit music legend and I'm so excited to share this episode with you fine folks! Dig it!
The JamBase Podcast Episode 32 features a "The Art Of The Setlist" chat with Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon, a “Musical Mentors” interview with Sister Sparrow as well as The Rundown recap of recent news items.
Turner and Seth first explain how this episode came together mostly by accident. They chat with Tim Newby, author of Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years Of Festival. Newby shares an early life story from each of the band's founding members: Drew Emmitt, Vince Herman and Mark Vann. Newby also offers his opinion on two myths that have become legendary in Salmon circles. Fans of Phish and String Cheese Incident will be interested to learn how Salmon’s early career intersected with those groups. We learn the beginnings of a musician’s prank called "Songbombing" discussed with Mimi Naja in Episode 63). Newby also tells us how different drummers came to define each era of the band and shares a passage from his book about the importance of finding Andy Thorn after the passing of Mark Vann. Next we go to the "Tasting Room" at Atlanta’s City Winery and hear long-time friends Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman speak of Tim's book, their evolving relationship with Phil Lesh, their current "living room-style" tour and more. The episode contains two exclusive duo performances from Emmitt and Herman, and a full-band live take on the Drew Emmitt's song “Astral Traveler," written in tribute to this program's Godfather, Col. Bruce Hampton - this version performed in The Colonel's adopted home town of Atlanta. A gorgeous studio version of the song appears on the Steve Berlin-produced Something Higher CD. Seth and Rob talk about Leftover Salmon’s stripped-down tour this autumn, during part one of two in an Inside Out wTnS series on the band. Drew Emmitt elaborated on a variety of topics backstage at the Hampton 70 event earlier this year at the Fox Theatre, during which he correctly predicts the overwhelming nature of the night that lay before him and an all-star cast. Emmitt talks about meeting the Col. and touring with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, how Vince Herman can sometimes “turn into Bruce for a while” and how the COl. taught Leftover Salmon to toss away preconceived notions and play from their soul, instead of their mind. Drew also discusses a more creative touring schedule in 2018, how Salmon evolved while touring with Bill Payne and Jeff Sipe, and recording in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, Earl Scruggs and John Bell. Fans of Hot Tuna, Neil Young and Phish will enjoy his stories of collaborations with each artist. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio.
