June 10, 2026Today's Reading: John 13:1-20Daily Lectionary: Proverbs 8:22-36; John 13:1-20“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” (John 13:1) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Do you get anxious before a big event? Maybe you get really excited; all those butterflies of anticipation are fluttering in your stomach. You have a big test, a big game, a fancy dinner, or a presentation… something big is coming, and you know that it matters. Sometimes, in our desire to focus, we forget about other people or other things. Washing the dishes? Later, I have a paper to finish. Walking the dog? Later, I have an important dinner to get ready for. We focus on our next big moment and nothing else. In today's reading, Jesus knows what is coming; His ‘big event' is His crucifixion. This has been the plan of salvation since before the world was created, and now the time had come. And yet, who is His focus? Where does He spend His last hours before death? Jesus “loved them to the end.” Jesus, knowing all that is about to happen, stays focused on those whom He loves. In John 13, Jesus washes the feet of the disciples. He shows, yet again, what it means to love sacrificially. He shows what it means to love and care for your neighbors. He continues to teach and to serve His disciples. He knows what His next hours are going to include, but He continues to love. He teaches the disciples that this is an example to them (and to us) - that we are to serve others. Jesus says in John 13:20 that, ‘truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.' You have received the one whom Jesus sends - you have been given the Holy Spirit! In your Baptism, you are made clean and declared holy; you are covered by Jesus and bear God's name. You are one of Jesus' own. On the cross, it was for you that Jesus willingly hung and willingly died. In the Resurrection, it is you that He brings into new life and unto life eternal. You are one for whom Jesus died. You are loved. And Jesus will indeed love you to the end. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.“Yes, Father, yes, most willingly I'll bear what You command Me. My will conforms to Your decree, I'll do what You have asked Me.” O wondrous Love, what have you done! The Father offers up His Son, Desiring our salvation. O Love, how strong You are to save! You lay the One into the grave Who built the earth's foundation. (LSB 438:3) Deac. Sarah Longmire, Curricula Curator for Higher Things and Director of Family Life at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lee's Summit, MO.

As we continue on in the Lenten season we are reminded that Jesus is the Lamb of God and that He resolutely and willingly went to suffer the pain and punishment of mankind's sin. The prophet Isaiah described what the Messiah came to accomplish in Isaiah 53:4-9 - "Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked—But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth." With Gerhardt we joyfully procliam: "O wondrous Love! what hast Thou done! The Father offers up His Son– The Son content descendeth! O Love, how strong Thou art to save!" (TLH 142:3). What amazing love indeed! The knowledge of God's love in Christ, and Christ's love at the cross move us as well. Paul writes: "Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:11). We are moved to service to our God and Savior, in this life, with our hands, our hearts and our voices! May the LORD bring you to a true appreciation for love He has shown you, and move you to live your life in service to Him, giving you joyful and thankful hearts for His salvation. May the LORD bless your worship this weekend!

Sermon Title: O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done Scripture: Hebrews 10:10-12 One of the most common understandings of why Jesus had to die is that Jesus needed to pay the penalty for our sin. Another atonement theory that focuses on solving the problem of our sin involves seeing Jesus' death as a sacrificial offering. LakesideUMC.net

"Raziskovanje razuma je prijetno in koristno," je prvi stavek v Uvodu k delu Razprava o človeškem razumu (1689, slovenski prevod 2025-26, Slovenska matica) Johna Locka (1632–1704). Gre za eno najbolj prelomnih del v zgodovini filozofske misli, v katerem Locke raziskuje izvor, meje in obseg človeškega znanja oziroma vednosti.

Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. The choir begins this week's reflection singing verses from Psalm 84 – "O how amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts!" – to a chant by the English composer Sir Edward Bairstow. Bairstow was very much wedded to his dwelling place of Yorkshire, the county of his birth and where he served as Organist of York Minster for several decades until his death. He even turned down an offer to become Organist at Westminster Abbey and said of the suggestion that he follow a fellow composer to the United States that he would "rather go to the devil"! Our reading from Luke is the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Alison reflects on how it reminds us that whenever we are tempted to view ourselves too favourably, we should remember that we — like all around us — are made from the same dust. We close with the hymn "Come down, O Love divine" which sets a fourteenth century text by Bianco da Siena – a member of the Order of Jesuates, a group of unordained men who followed the prescripts of St Augustine. The tune is Down Ampney by the great Ralph Vaughan Williams. Send us a textGeorge Matheson sat alone on his sister's wedding night, a blind pastor abandoned years earlier by his fiancée who couldn't bear life with a blind man. In just five minutes, from this place of profound heartache, he penned one of the greatest hymns of surrender and God's faithfulness: "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go."This episode takes you on a journey through each verse of this extraordinary hymn, revealing how Matheson transformed personal tragedy into a theological masterpiece. We explore the paradoxical nature of Christian surrender – how giving up control leads not to loss but to gaining something far greater. When we surrender our lives, we receive them back "richer, fuller." When we yield our "flickering torch," we gain access to God's "sunshine blaze." Even in our deepest pain, we can "trace the rainbow through the rain."What are you holding that needs to be laid down? Where have you been trying to maintain control? Join us as we explore how surrender becomes the pathway to seeing and receiving God's unfailing love that will not let us go.SHOW NOTES:“O Love That Will Not Let Me Go” from Indelible Grace: The Hymn Sing, Live in Nashville (feat. Order of Service: - Prelude - Prayer for Friday Morning, p. 170 - Hymn 289 - Join All the Glorious Names: vv. 1, 2, 5, 6 - 1 Peter 1:18-23: ... you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. - Devotion - The Second Article: Redemption (p. 32): And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. - Hymn 281 - O Love, How Deep, How High, How Broad: vv. 1, 2, 5, 7 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Chaplain Don Moldstad (Preacher), Hannah Caauwe (Organist)

And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. Welcome to this year's Old Books with Grace Lent Series. This year's series is on penitential poetry. That is, on poems of the past that reflect on one's sin, on need, on lament, on making things right, on conversion and satisfaction. Such poetry is part of an ancient tradition, dating back to the Psalms themselves. Today's poem is "Desire," by Thomas Traherne. You can read along below, or listen as I read: For giving me Desire, An Eager Thirst, a burning Ardent fire, A virgin Infant Flame, A Love with which into the World I came, An Inward Hidden Heavenly Love, Which in my Soul did Work and move, And ever ever me Enflame, With restlesse longing Heavenly Avarice, That could never be satisfied, That did incessantly a Paradice Unknown suggest, and som thing undescried Discern, and bear me to it; be Thy Name for ever praisd by me.   My Parchd and Witherd Bones Burnt up did seem: My Soul was full of Groans: My Thoughts Extensions were: Like Paces Reaches Steps they did appear: They somwhat hotly did persue, Knew that they had not all their due; Nor ever quiet were: But made my flesh like Hungry Thirsty Ground, My Heart a deep profound Abyss, And evry Joy and Pleasure but a Wound, So long as I my Blessedness did miss. O Happiness! A Famine burns, And all my Life to Anguish turns!   Where are the Silent Streams, The Living Waters, and the Glorious Beams, The Sweet Reviving Bowers, The Sadby Groves, the Sweet and Curious Flowers, The Springs and Trees, the Heavenly Days, The Flowry Meads, the Glorious Rayes, The Gold and Silver Towers? Alass, all these are poor and Empty Things, Trees Waters Days and Shining Beams Fruits, Flowers, Bowers, Shady Groves and Springs, No Joy will yeeld, no more then Silent Streams. These are but Dead Material Toys And cannot make my Heavenly Joys.   O Love! ye Amities, And Friendships, that appear abov the Skies! Ye Feasts, and Living Pleasures! Ye Senses, Honors, and Imperial Treasures! Ye Bridal Joys! Ye High Delights; That satisfy all Appetites! Ye Sweet Affections, and Ye High Respects! What ever Joys there be In Triumphs, Whatsoever stand In Amicable Sweet Societie Whatever pleasures are at his right Hand Ye must, before I am Divine, In full Proprietie be mine.   This Soaring Sacred Thirst, Ambassador of Bliss, approached first, Making a Place in me, That made me apt to Prize, and Taste, and See, For not the Objects, but the sence Of Things, doth Bliss to Souls dispence, And make it Lord like Thee. Sence, feeling, Taste, Complacency and Sight, These are the true and real Joys, The Living Flowing Inward Melting, Bright And Heavenly Pleasures; all the rest are Toys: All which are founded in Desire, As Light in Flame, and Heat in fire.
