Why Healing Our Soil Is the Real Healthcare Revolution

Our health and the health of our soil are deeply intertwined. Modern agriculture has become heavily dependent on synthetic inputs and industrial practices that strip the land of vitality, and the farmers of agency. Many farmers no longer eat what they grow, suffer from poor health, and experience alarming rates of depression and suicide. But there's a path forward: regenerative farming not only restores soil health and increases nutrient density in food, it also revitalizes rural communities and offers economic resilience. By reconnecting with natural systems and rebuilding diversity in our soil, food, and microbiomes, we reclaim both ecological balance and human well-being. In this episode, I discuss, along with Allen Williams, Dr. Daphne Miller, and Ian Somerhalder the many facets of modern-day farming, including what we need to pay attention to and why we need to reclaim our soil. Allen Williams is a founding partner of Understanding Ag, LLC and the Soil Health Academy, and is a partner in Joyce Farms, Inc. He has consulted with more than 4,000 farmers and ranchers in the US and other countries, on operations ranging from a few acres to over 1 million acres. Allen and his partners pioneered many of the early regenerative agriculture principles and practices and now teach those to farmers globally. He is a “recovering academic,” having served 15 years on the faculty at Louisiana Tech University and Mississippi State University teaching genetics and physiology. Allen has been featured in the Carbon Nation film series, Soil Carbon Cowboys, on the Dr. Oz show, ABC Food Forecast News, and in Kiss The Ground, A Regenerative Secret, The Farmer's Footprint film series, and the Sacred Cow film series.  Dr. Daphne Miller is a practicing family physician, Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco, and Founder of the Health from the Soil Up Initiative. She is the author of two books: The Jungle Effect: Healthiest Diets from Around the World and Farmacology: Total Health from the Soil Up. A pioneer in the “Healthy Parks, Healthy People” initiative, Miller helped build linkages between our medical system and our park system and writes her patients “park prescriptions” to get outdoors. She also developed a soil learning lab for health professionals at Paicines Ranch in Hollister California. Ian Somerhalder is an American actor, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Best known for his iconic roles on "Lost" and "The Vampire Diaries," he is co-founder of The Absorption Company (a revolutionary supplement company formulated for increased absorption) and co-owner of Brother's Bond Bourbon. His recent work includes executive producing the documentary "Common Ground" (2023), which highlights regenerative agriculture's innovative solutions to combat climate change. Soil grows 95 percent of our food and sustains human life. But monocrops, pesticide reliance, and other modern farming methods have degraded soil health in lasting ways. Some scientists believe we have less than 60 harvests left. The way we are feeding ourselves is undermining the very ecology we're dependent upon. The hope? Regenerative farming practices. On today's show Kiss The Ground's Chief Executive Officer Evan Harrison urges each of us to participate in the regenerative movement. Here's a preview:[6:00] A laundry list of all the consequences associated with degraded soil[10:00] The main reason why pesticides are a staple of the monocrop farming model, plus: what science says about degraded soil and a food's nutrient density[19:00] For people who buy and eat food (aka everyone), here's how you can support regenerative agriculture Resource mentioned:Kiss The Ground film--Join our (free!) community here.Find your tribe. Sustainable Minimalists are on Facebook, Instagram + Youtube.Say hello! MamaMinimalistBoston@gmail.com.Our Sponsors:* Thank you to HomeThreads! In today's episode, we get the privilege of visiting with not one but two leaders in the regenerative space, Jean Pullen & Alan Cacao. Through their project Regenerate Your Reality, Jean & Alan have been tirelessly promoting permaculture education, seed propagation, food sovereignty, & community-building projects throughout the country.      Regenerate Your Reality is a permaculture, agroforestry, and education project working to bring sovereignty and happiness to our communities. ⁣It's their mission to restore the relationship between humans and the earth to build a regenerative present.   They start the conversation by describing their work educating people at their biodiversity sanctuary in the mountains, near Platanillo, up the hill from Dominical. If you schedule a visit to their 1-hectare food forest, you'll be welcomed to a tour of more than 300 species of food they have planted there. All of which is a living seed bank.We discuss their partnerships with Kiss the Ground & Jungle Project and how they've been empowering local farmers with a regenerative livelihood, growing syntropic food forests with a focus on the abundantly producing breadfruit tree.   With the help of Earth University, INA (Costa Rica's National Institute for Learning), and Kiss the Ground, these two life advocates and the rest of their friends at The Jungle Project provide ongoing, multi-year technical assistance to small-scale farmers on a variety of organic regenerative practices. The organization's mission is Trees, Training & Trade. The farming families learn to restore and maintain the ecological health of their farmland in ways that improve their nutrition and their income.    This crew is actively seeding a regenerative nation.    As Alan put it, connecting with the earth is our first medicine and one worth practicing daily. Participating in a world where the color green is ever out your window, and the sounds of birds and insects are perpetually punctuating the periphery of your awareness -  for me, that's a life I want to live. It's the one I want to participate in preserving and passing on to my grandchildren.     I loved the moment when all three of us were relating to the transformative power we're gifted with when we embody the experience of volunteering or interning at a permaculture center. You become a product of that project. It changes your life forever.   I was impressed to learn that the Jungle Project is rewarding partner farms by buying 80% of the fruit they produce.    Their mission is to substitute grains in people's diets with breadfruit. Changing people's habits can be a long road, but it doesn't stop them from walking it. After the interview, I had the pleasure of trying Alan's handmade breadfruit tortillas with the abundant garden salad we all shared. The tortillas were delicious and had a very agreeable texture! I think they have a shot.   If you'd like to learn more from Jean and Alan, check out Regenerate Your Reality's website and the permaculture webinars they've created. You can find Jean's book there, as well.   That's what I've got for you this time. If you like the episode, pass it on to a friend. Ryland is also a dedicated husband and father and lives on a 17-acre regenerative organic farm in Fillmore, CA, where he is learning to practice what he preaches.   Facebook Twitter Instagram  Linkedin   Connect with Kiss The Ground  Website Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn YouTube   Connect with Café Gratitude Website Facebook Instagram   Connect with Gracias Madre Website Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 01:48 The Matrix of Life 06:17 Food and Games and Life   12:11 Cafe Gratitude to Gracias Madre 17:08 Committed But Not Attached  20:45 The Regeneration Generation 23:30 Be an Advocate for Soil Health

I mean, in my book Sweet in Tooth and Claw, I look at the work of lots of scientists who studying how nature works and discovering all these incredible connections among living things that certainly help them thrive and help ecosystems thrive. But I think it's this story of cooperation is important in terms of the story that we tell ourselves about nature, and seeing as how we are part of nature, it's important that we see ourselves as possibly a partner instead of a destroyer. I think that we have held onto the perspective that nature is all about competition and conflict. And when we shift that, when we look at nature as this vast web of interconnection and cooperation, and of course competition and conflict in there obviously in some places. But when we look at this vast web of cooperation and collaboration, I think that it changes our view. It changes our view of what's possible. You know, instead of us trying to make order out of chaos, largely out of the chaos that we've created, we can instead look at the world as being held together and look for the places where the connections have been snapped, where the connections have been broken, and where we can roll back some of the damage that we've done and help those connections heal.”www.kristinohlson.comwww.patagonia.com/stories/sweet-in-tooth-and-claw/story-123959.html www.oneplanetpodcast.orgwww.creativeprocess.infoInstagram @creativeprocesspodcast

"I think it's really interesting how we humans are a massively cooperative species. That's why we dominate the world to the extent that we do. We're very good at working together and stories and metaphors are a lot of what drives us to work together, that drives us towards goals. So that's why I thought it was very important to push against the metaphors that have informed so much of our culture for the last couple of hundred years. So we have the idea of survival of the fittest, not directly from Darwin, that argued that the growing human population would outstrip the earth's resources and there would inevitably be death and weakness in parts of the population. And Darwin had read Malthus and took that idea of progress through struggle and the weeding out of weaker members by the harsh exigencies of nature, and that was how he came up with his theory of natural selection. Those are phrases that have stuck with our society, and I think our thinking about how nature works and how we work.So those are phrases that came out of science that affect the culture. And the culture, of course, affects science in terms of what we push science to ask for, what we tell science we want to know about the world. And I'm hoping that the new crop of scientists who are looking at all of these cooperative relations among living things - how that holds together ecosystems, how that determines how species can survive - that that new crop of scientists will inform and reform the metaphors that we use, the stories that we tell ourselves about how nature works, how we work, how the culture works. That's what I'm hoping will happen."www.kristinohlson.comwww.patagonia.com/stories/sweet-in-tooth-and-claw/story-123959.html www.oneplanetpodcast.orgwww.creativeprocess.infoInstagram @creativeprocesspodcast

From food and agriculture to fashion and economics, 'regenerative' has become a buzzword over the last few years. But regeneration is not a new concept at all. It is a paradigm and set of agricultural practices that indigenous peoples have practiced for millenia.  This week, Danielle and Louisa speak about looking to our indigenous past for a regenerative future with Nathalie Kelley, an actress of Quechua descent, most recently starring in the #1 Netflix series The Baker and the Beauty and the Fast & the Furious movie series. With a background in social science and policy, Nathalie strives to tell stories that educate and inspire. She is on the boards of both Kiss The Ground and the Fungí Foundation, using her platform to elevate Indigenous wisdom and technologies as a means of coming back into justice and harmony with our ecosystems. She is in deep devotion and service to the entire web of life, advocating in particular for the health of our soil, water, the fungí and forests. Her mission is the preservation of biodiversity, including cultural and myco-diversity on the planet.  In this powerful, inspiring, and, at times, heartbreaking conversation, we discuss: The human and environmental costs of our climate crisis and industrial agriculture The connection between personal health and planetary healthWhy and what we can learn from indigenous peoples to build a regenerative future and feed the worldIndigenous and low tech solutions to combating climate change issuesNathalie's regenerative learning journey Tips for starting your own regenerative learning journeyPractical changes we can make in our everyday lives Warning: Some of what is shared in this episode may be upsetting or could be triggering, especially for Indigenous listeners. Specialist after specialist told Autumn Smith nothing could be done to alleviate her physical and mental health distress. As a last-ditch effort, she turned to the power of whole foods. She cleaned up her diet with Paleo-inspired eating and improved her gut in just 30 days. The changes also decreased her anxiety, increased her mental sharpness, and discovered her inner vibrancy. That experience propelled Autumn to help others capture the power of whole foods through quality food products produced by regenerative agricultural practices. In 2013, she and her husband, Chas, along with another family member and friend, launched Paleovalley. They built a company dedicated to helping people get essential nutrients without added sugars, grains, and other harmful ingredients. With meat being the central focus of their business, they set out to learn all they could about production and regenerative farming. In 2018, they launched Wild Pastures, a regenerative meat delivery service, and recently opened Wild Pastures Burger Company, their flagship fast casual burger restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. This conservation gets into the problems with current methods of animal agriculture and possible solutions. You'll find out more about the nutritional differences of animal products depending on how they're raised. Autumn says meat labels can be tricky, too, so she breaks down the jargon and tells you what to look for and what to avoid.Autumn advocates for meat's many advantages and works to dispel the myths that continue to persist about meat consumption. Regenerative agriculture is one of the best tools we have at hand for combating climate change and increasing biodiversity, but convincing lawmakers, farmers and the public at large of its merits is a challenge. To discuss those merits and how regeneration works, my guest this week is Finian Makepeace of Kiss the Ground, an advocacy organization that promotes soil health as an integral part of the global effort to sequester more carbon.

One of America's greatest and most beloved film directors, Frank Capra, was just six years old when he arrived in New York on a steamer from Sicily with his poor Italian immigrant parents in 1903. Growing up, he worked hard, excelled in school, and fell in love with American freedom and the American common man giving us such films as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “It's a Wonderful Life.”
