I guess in the short time that I've been doing true crime episodes, it would be inevitable for me to speak to someone arrested for murder. But leave it to me to be able to get it done in 3 tries, instead of 1! Nonetheless, I found this to be a very different type of interview for me, as you would expect. Michael was as brutally honest with me in this interview as he is in his book. He is someone clearly self-aware of who he is and what he is incarcerated for. If you've seen the episode of "Evil Lives Here", you'll notice that he is a large man who is now confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries and health problems. In his book, he mentions that he weighed over 300 pounds while in the Iron Horsemen and working as a mob enforcer. I thought the show was an interesting companion piece to the book. He doesn't portray himself as neither a victim or a hero, but as a man who chose violence after his own abused upbringing. (I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, Rebels.) On a quiet Friday morning in June 2008, an armed intruder entered the Sun Drop Bottling Company in Concord, North Carolina, and brutally murdered office manager Donna Barnhardt and job applicant Darrell Noles in a calculated robbery. For nearly eighteen years, the double homicide remained one of the city's most haunting cold cases, devastating families and challenging investigators. This week, Alyssa and Nadia record in mid-May as the heat, allergies, airplane noise, ambulances, and barking dogs set the scene. After a quick detour into neighborhood complaints, Alyssa brings the conversation to the real topic: money, and how Nadia is thinking about it as she nears the end of college.Nadia has one semester left, a co-op that pays slightly above Boston's minimum wage, and parental support that has always had a clear end date. Alyssa asks what it feels like to stand at the edge of that transition.Nadia shares that she isn't panicking, but she also doesn't feel fully at ease. Boston is expensive, her co-op pay only stretches so far, and she's aware that next semester may require working two jobs to make everything work. She reflects on past choices, like spending on her summer abroad in Greece, and the growing reality that she's getting closer to true financial independence.The conversation expands to the job market for Nadia's peers. Many seniors are still searching for offers, moving home, or taking whatever work they can find. Even in healthcare, where Nadia is headed, jobs may be available but often don't pay enough to live alone in Boston.Alyssa compares this to her own post-college experience during the dot-com boom, when jobs were easier to find but the pressure to choose something “worthy” still felt heavy. Claire lived with chronic pelvic and vaginal pain for more than two decades. After years of medical searching, diagnoses that named the pain but did not resolve it, countless treatments, medications, physical therapies, and the deep loneliness that can come with symptoms people are afraid to talk about, Claire eventually found the work of Dr. Sarno, JournalSpeak, and our mindbody approach. What I love so much about this conversation is Claire's honesty about the long way around. She talks about researching, resisting, comparing herself to other recovery stories, wondering if she was doing it wrong, and slowly learning that every part of her process belonged. We talk about good-girl conditioning, conflict avoidance, the fear of being seen, the shame of not knowing how to feel, and the way the nervous system can create symptoms in the very places we most want to hide. Claire's recovery was not about doing this perfectly. It was about becoming safe enough to be herself, to speak up, to take risks, to have her own back, and to stop abandoning herself in the name of being acceptable. Claire has spent years helping hold this work for others — first as an admin of the original JournalSpeak Facebook page, and now as an admin of Nicole Sachs' Support Circle, where she continues to offer steadiness, wisdom, and lived proof to people who are still finding their way. Since 2003, Ringo Starr has been producing an incredibly prolific run of releases: albums and EPs, plus live recordings. On Aug. 27, 2025, a shooter stood outside of Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis and opened fire through the stained glass windows. Children who had gathered for Mass during the first week of school dove for cover as bullets ricocheted off the pews. Older children shielded younger classmates with their bodies. Two students were killed that day. Many other children and adults were wounded, some critically. Eight months later, the Annunciation community continues to heal from the grief and terror. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with two parents and the principal at Annunciation about what recovery looks like — including how some parents are using their voices in the legislature and elsewhere to make sure no other children go through what their families experienced. Suzanne Howard was playing around with Google Maps one day and zoomed in on Concord, in the east bay. She noticed a large open space near Concord High School that wasn't labeled, but had some mysterious looking mounds in a grid pattern. What are those things, she wondered? And, what's being done with this space? Could housing be built there? In fact, a massive redevelopment project is in the works in Concord, but it could take decades to materialize.
