Most success stories start with an unimaginable backstory.  Larry Bird’s journey to NBA immortality involved one of the most hardscrabble roads to success.  In the fall of 1974, Bird-one of the greatest players ever to pick up a basketball-was lost and in danger of slipping away.  This self-proclaimed ‘hick from French Link’ was recruited to play for Bobby Knight’s vaunted Indiana University Hoosiers’ team, but his discomfort with the fit at the University saw Bird never play a minute for the team.  It all could have ended right there, but for the determination of Bob King and Bill Hodges to bring him to Indiana State University in Terre Haute, a school whose basketball team couldn’t even fill its arena.  I’m old enough to recall the March 1979 NCAA Tournament finals game that pitted Larry Bird against Magic Johnson.  The rest of the story involved these two men, very different in so many ways, bringing the NBA back from a perilous moment when the league was at risk of never achieving comparability with football and baseball.  Keith O’Brien, author of “Heartland: A Forgotten Place, An Impossible Dream, and the Miracle of Larry Bird,” is a great storyteller and he joined us recently for a virtual book talk for my town’s library, which is now available as a podcast.

I guess in the short time that I've been doing true crime episodes, it would be inevitable for me to speak to someone arrested for murder. But leave it to me to be able to get it done in 3 tries, instead of 1! Nonetheless, I found this to be a very different type of interview for me, as you would expect. Michael was as brutally honest with me in this interview as he is in his book. He is someone clearly self-aware of who he is and what he is incarcerated for. If you've seen the episode of "Evil Lives Here", you'll notice that he is a large man who is now confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries and health problems. In his book, he mentions that he weighed over 300 pounds while in the Iron Horsemen and working as a mob enforcer. I thought the show was an interesting companion piece to the book. He doesn't portray himself as neither a victim or a hero, but as a man who chose violence after his own abused upbringing. (I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, Rebels.) Claire lived with chronic pelvic and vaginal pain for more than two decades. After years of medical searching, diagnoses that named the pain but did not resolve it, countless treatments, medications, physical therapies, and the deep loneliness that can come with symptoms people are afraid to talk about, Claire eventually found the work of Dr. Sarno, JournalSpeak, and our mindbody approach. What I love so much about this conversation is Claire's honesty about the long way around. She talks about researching, resisting, comparing herself to other recovery stories, wondering if she was doing it wrong, and slowly learning that every part of her process belonged. We talk about good-girl conditioning, conflict avoidance, the fear of being seen, the shame of not knowing how to feel, and the way the nervous system can create symptoms in the very places we most want to hide. Claire's recovery was not about doing this perfectly. It was about becoming safe enough to be herself, to speak up, to take risks, to have her own back, and to stop abandoning herself in the name of being acceptable. Suzanne Howard was playing around with Google Maps one day and zoomed in on Concord, in the east bay. She noticed a large open space near Concord High School that wasn't labeled, but had some mysterious looking mounds in a grid pattern. What are those things, she wondered? And, what's being done with this space? Could housing be built there? In fact, a massive redevelopment project is in the works in Concord, but it could take decades to materialize.
