Traveling up to Nashville today to chat with consummate guitarist and songwriter Bill Lloyd of the 80's country rock duo Foster and Lloyd. Still enjoying the songwriting/session work in Music City, Bill discusses his early start into the music business with MTM (yup, the late Mary Tyler Moore's music company); meeting up with Texan Radney Foster to form Foster and Lloyd, songwriting credits with Beth Nielsen Chapman, session work with The Kinks, Carl Perkins, Ringo Starr and Cheap Trick, to his current work with The Long Players. He also talks about his new CD 'Look Into It', along with a nod to Nashville's video genius Steve Boyle (of Skid Media and 'Return to Comboland' fame) for his cool 'film noir' contribution for the CD; plus Bill's past work as curator for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and all about that special 20th Anniversary gig with the oh so popular group The Long Players. The wonderful Bill Lloyd returns to The Record Player nearly two years after he stopped in to discuss Paul and Linda McCartney's RAM with us.This time, we're talking Todd Rundgren with Bill and the conversation spirals in a lot of different directions -- including plenty of record collector nerd chatter. We also discuss Look Into It, Bill's latest solo release, which has a really cool music video for the initial single, "This Ain't My Parade."Our thanks to Bill as always for taking time to converse about music with us! We had a ball.P.S. Here's a link to the absolutely essential Rundgren book from Paul Myers that we mentioned during our conversation.P.S.S. Don't forget to check out the newly reborn Jefitoblog.

This week, we celebrate the beginning of the '90s (Or was it the end of the '80s? You be the judge.) When MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips ruled the airwaves. When Uncle Gregg found some direction and joined the Navy. When teenage Brett co-founded his first band, Empty Glass. And when our special guest, power pop legend Jamie Hoover was caught in a flurry of activity, releasing his debut solo album Coupons, Questions And Comments and prepping for The Spongetones' 1991 third full length, Oh Yeah! Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. Hoover either produced or co-produced all the Spongetones' albums, and continues to produce a wide variety of other musicians, recently including '60s singer/songwriter Bob Lind ('Elusive Butterfly') and young prodigy Elena Rogers. In this continuation of the Career Series in the Life of the Mind podcasts from the Oak Guild Institute we talk with Dr. Bill Lloyd. For sure Bill is an ophthalmologist. However, the good doctor is more. Bill is also a radio and tv personality, he is a communicator, he is an educator, he is a husband, he is a father and he is a friend. Because of his communications skills, Bill imparts life lessons even as he tells his career story. As an added bonus, enjoy the commentary from two Oak Guild founders Katie Gray and Jake Chacko as they draw the parallels between Bill's story and Arthur C. Brooks' book From Strength to Strength.

Warning: Some strong language and reference to suicide We often think of ‘progress' as an enemy of ‘prejudice', but when it comes to prejudice towards Gypsy, Roma and Travellers, the opposite is true. YouGov polling shows a decline in British society's attitudes towards their nomadic members, as the UN flags a rise in hate speech and violence towards the ethnic minority across Europe. Why is this happening? Is it down to changes in reality, or simply changes in perception? We speak to activists and actors about the role of politics and pop culture in creating an increasingly hostile environment, and unveil the masked mental health crisis that is endemic among Traveller youths. Mikey Walsh - author (and protagonist) of ‘Gypsy Boy' - joins us to talk about the news media's complicity in creating a society clouded more in fiction than fact. We look at headlines on ‘Traveller crime' and opinion pieces in mainstream papers pleading to phase out the ethnic minority. The episode is accompanied by traditional Romani music performed and produced by Bill Lloyd. How W-2 Employees “Do Well By Doing Good” Interview with Bill Lloyd The last two years have been brutal for nonprofits. Due to the contracted economy and Coronavirus, nonprofits are working harder than ever to raise funds for many worthy causes. By leveraging our unique approach, nonprofits can expand their donor base, create a new market, and increase revenue immediately with minimal expenses, while helping donors enjoy better retirements. Bill Lloyd: Math teacher. Swim coach. Father. Financial Advisor. Wealth Manager. Tax Strategist. Whistleblower. Entrepreneur. These are all titles that describe Bill Lloyd over his forty-year career from Tulane to the corporate world. In every role he has held, his modus operandi has been to act with integrity and build deep connections with the people he serves. Raised in a household where your word was your promise and handshakes were given more importance than a contract, it is no surprise that Bill is known as a straight arrow who cares about his customers and the community. In 2008, he discovered a $2.5 Billion math problem which led to blowing the whistle (SEC) and saving the retirements of thousands. “Not on my watch,” became Bill's refrain as he navigated the consequences of being a whistleblower. It would be years later when tax laws changed that Bill put on his math thinking cap and came up with a way to help hardworking W2 employees escape to the land of better retirements. Coupled with the pandemic and the challenges facing nonprofits and philanthropy, he launched The Charitable Payraise™ in 2020 to expand the impact individuals can have on their retirement and giving back Learn more about your ad choices. The great Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd fame is our guest for today's edition of The Record Player. Bill beamed in from Nashville to discuss one of his favorite albums from the McCartney catalog, 1971's Ram.Ram emerged as the Beatles were in the process of legally dissolving their existence as a band. Credited to Paul and Linda McCartney, the album arrived after 1970's McCartney. His proper solo debut. Wild Life, the first outing with Wings shows up later in 1971, so Ram is an interesting divider between the two.In the midst of our album discussion with Bill, we also talk about some exciting things he has in process for 2022 and beyond.

In the studio discussing his first book - the biography 'Have A Little Faith: The John Hiatt Story', author Michael Elliott talks about researching and writing about the singer-songwriter's success and substance abuse; along with Hiatt's resilience and eventual recovery. Michael answers questions about his early days in radio and how working around music eventually brought him success in writing for online music magazines such as No Depression, Pop Matters and Albumism; and what it was like researching for his book with legendary Nashville artists Bill Lloyd and The Long Players. He also tells the true story of how he asked for - and received - a forward for his book from Elvis Costello; being a part of a writing panel at AmericanaFest with fellow music writers Holly George Warren and Marshall Chapman; plus how a book he read by The Who guitarist Pete Townshend inspired Michael to write his first book. Pull up a chair and join us in the studio for this special interview!

One of my fave places for original rock music is in North Carolina, and today I'm in the studio with Jamie Hoover of The Spongetones! Jamie talks about the band's musical start in Charlotte (complete with the jangle pop riffs and their Beatlesque vocal style); to his current work in Nashville with Bill Lloyd (of Foster and Lloyd) and the rest of The Long Players. We also discuss nearly every reason why he loves the band XTC; The Spongetones getting that initial press from Rolling Stone magazine for albums Beat Music and Torn Apart; those days of touring with The Kinks and later with The Smithereens and Hootie & the Blowfish; and who really named his studio 'Hooverama'. It's a rock and roll cover story you don't want to miss!

This week you get to listen in on the audio recording of last week's webinar with Dr. Bill Lloyd, the Health Director of Transamerica's Advanced Markets Group, where he and Brian covered and overview of the pandemic as it stands today and what scientists have learned about transmission. They also covered how the different vaccines work, and what kinds of steps you still need to take to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors... even if you have already received a dose (or two) of a vaccine. ...in which we are joined by Lakeland Walker editor John Manning for our annual delve into Countrystrides past, picking our best bits from 2020 as we chat about everything from herdwicks to heroines; from bonfires to booze, from rewilding to rediscovering the joys of local before making New Years resolutions with guests including Sue Allan, James Rebanks, Julia Aglionby, Bill Birkett, Steve Matthews, Bill Lloyd and Penny Bradshaw. We would like to thanks Bill Lloyd not only for his banjo playout of the tune 'Through the Glen', but also for hosting us in his Wild Wood Studio.
Gary Ritchie y Cupid's Carnoval cierran un programa repleto de emociones y pop bitelsco para ir preparando las navidades con nuevos villancicos.⦁ The Empty Hearts, Coat-Tailer⦁ The Empty Hearts, Well, Look At You ⦁ Dear Stella, Time Machine ⦁ The Weeklings, (Break My Heart in ) 3 ⦁ The Weeklings, Little Tease (Alive If You Want It, live) ⦁ The Grip Weeds, Give Me Some Of Your Ways ⦁ The Grip Weeds, Infinite Soul⦁ The Reflectors, Teenage Hearts ⦁ The Reflectors, U Should Be My Girl ⦁ The Yum Yums, Crush On You⦁ The Yum Yums, Can't Get Enough Of Your Love⦁ Bill Lloyd, Don't Kill The Messenger⦁ Bill Lloyd, You Got Me⦁ Andy Bopp, I Am A Jetfighter⦁ Gary Ritchie, Tunnel Of Love⦁ Cupid's Carnival, She Don't Care⦁ Cupid's Carnival, Better Times Ahead⦁ Gary Ritchie, Rain

“What's the criteria for getting music played on your show?” THIS is a query I get in email more than anything else. FIRST – Listen To The Show...listen in and see if your sound is a fit. I play songs with melody, harmony, jangly guitars, a working rhythm section and vocals and lyrics one can relate to and understand. SECOND – DO NOT SEND VIDEOS! Mine is a radio style stream, THIS AIN'T MTV! High quality sound files help make my job easier! “C” – Please as you write your songs, be smarter, be more clever with your choice of words! I TRY to avoid bad language in the music I play, try to stay family friendly, there are other ways to convey bad words than just being blatant...it ain't shocking, edgy, cool or hip, it's just common, and you can write better than that. And finally, I JUST HAVE TO LIKE IT! No focus groups, no test trials...just me and the sound I can't create (I don't have the genetics!) that haunts my brain! Match up to that, and you have a great shot of getting played. Send sound files to jrprell@mindspring.comCD's to Jim Prell 990 Fulton Lane NE, Palm Bay, Florida 32905. Los Long Ryders, amén. Un poco de pop a cargo de Bill Lloyd y nos vamos a otra parte, popping and rolling!- The Long Ryders, Down To The Well - The Long Ryders, If You Want To See Me Cry - The Long Ryders, Looking For Lewis And Clark- Robert Plant, Charlie Patton Highway (Turn it Up, Pt. 1)- Robert Plant, Too Much Alike (with Patty Griffin)- Ronnie Earl the Broadcasters, Blues for George Floyd- Ronnie Earl, Black Lives Matter- Ronnie Earl, Albert's Stomp - Joan Jett, Jeepster- Cristiano Varisco, Do Cosmos Ao Mexico- Cristiano Varisco, Rosa Cromática- Bill Lloyd, I've Had Enough Of Your Love- Bill Lloyd, You Got Me- Bill Lloyd, Etch-a-Sketch
John Cowan is one of bluegrass, country, and rock's finest tenor vocalist. Fortunately for New Grass Revival, The Doobie Brothers, and many others, he's a damn fine bass guitarist too! Cowan, along with other New Grass members, will be officially inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame on October 1 in a previously taped ceremony from the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium. It's an honor he holds dear to his heart. Born in Ohio, Cowan first developed his musical talent in Louisville, Kentucky, when he began playing cover tunes in local rock bands. His first musical break came in the early 1970s when working at a car wash in Louisville and received a call from New Grass Revival member Sam Bush, inviting him to audition. He was offered a spot as the band's new bassist that very day. Cowan returned to Louisville long enough to gather his belonging and quit his job. He immediately moved in with another member so the group could begin practicing. They soon discovered just how great a vocal range their new bass player added to the group. "Callin' Baton Rouge," the highest-charting New Grass Revival tune, was later recorded by Garth Brooks, who also scored a top-five hit on the country charts years later. Cowan also added his tenor vocals to Brook's version. When New Grass Revival disbanded around 1990, Cowan joined forces with Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brother's, Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd, and Rusty Young of Poco to form The Sky Kings. The Doobie Brother's decided to reunite in 1992 and needed a bass player. His bandmate and an original Doobie member, Pat Simmons, suggested Cowan would be a wonderful addition to the band. A few years later, Cowan left the Doobie's to explore a solo career. The John Cowan Band still tours, giving audiences a taste of Cowan's expansive bluegrass vocals. As great an instrumentalist and vocalist Cowan is, he still gets star-struck when he encountered close friends like Emmylou Harris or the late Leon Russell. "Both are two of the greatest artists I have ever been associated with." With his soft gray hair and engaging smile, Cowan enjoys touring and looks forward to playing for live audiences. Besides playing with his own band, The Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour will hopefully happen in 2021. John Cowan will certainly remain a force in popular music for many years. Please enjoy this episode with Hall of Famer John Cowan and leave us a review on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

Episode #81: This week, the long, diverse career of Nashville's Bill Lloyd. From country hits as a writer and artist to collaborations with leading lights of rock and pop, Bill is a dynamo. And he's got a fantastic new album out called Working The Long Game. We hit a lot of points of Bill's biography in our conversation, but the essentials to know going in are that he moved to Nashville after college in Bowling Green, KY to write songs. He met fellow writer Radney Foster and they shot to fame in 1987 as Foster & Lloyd, with a sound that swam upstream from the country radio mainstream. In more recent years, he's led the band the Long Players, Nashville favorites that perform live cut-by-cut covers of full classic albums. He keeps up a steady run of solo albums that blend top-flight Nashville songcraft with the timeless sound of pop music. Also, highlights from my recent sit-down with the very busy Rhiannon Giddens about her life after the Carolina Chocolate Drops and a MacArthur Fellowship.
Dr. Bill joined Jonathan on this exciting episode of ESG Players Podcast. He is a six-time recipient of the American Medical Association Physicians' Recognition Award.Practicing in Sacramento, Calif., Lloyd is professor of ophthalmology at the University of California - Davis Medical Center. Additionally, he produces and hosts two nationally syndicated daily features over Sirius Satellite Radio.UN Sustainable Development goal #3-Good Health and Well Being is about ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development.Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality, but working towards achieving the target of less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030 would require improvements in skilled delivery care.Achieving the target of reducing premature deaths due to incommunicable diseases by 1/3 by the year 2030 would also require more efficient technologies for clean fuel use during cooking and education on the risks of tobacco. Many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues. By focusing on providing more efficient funding of health systems, improved sanitation and hygiene, increased access to physicians and more tips on ways to reduce ambient pollution, significant progress can be made in helping to save the lives of millions.
Kim Richey launched her career later than most, after her old friend and college band mate Bill Lloyd (of Foster & Lloyd) urged her to move to Music City. And after one of the most powerful executives in the music business introduced himself after a show and our guileless heroine had no idea who he was. Kim's crafty and tuneful mingling of folk, country and jangle pop was well formed when she released her debut album in 1995. Since then she's explored collaborations with diverse producers but maintained a through line to her sound and vibe that's made fans all over the world. She's one of Nashville's finest and she joins Craig to talk about her career and her new album Edgeland. Also, songwriter Tim Easton describes the experience of recording direct to lacquer disc in Bristol, just like the Carter Family did in 1927.

Texas songwriter extraordinaire Radney Foster has written over a dozen Top 10 country hits, including Colin Raye’s “Anyone Else,” Keith Urban’s “Raining on Sunday,” and Sara Evans’s “A Real Fine Place to Start.” He initially hit the scene with songwriting partner Bill Lloyd, with whom he penned Sweethearts of the Rodeo’s “Since I Found You.” The pair gained success as performers with the Top 10 singles “Crazy Over You,” “Sure Thing,” “What Do You Want From Me This Time,” and “Fair Shake,” earning four nominations for CMA Vocal Duo of the Year. Foster’s debut solo album, Del Rio, TX 1959, spawned five charting singles, including the Top 10 hit “Nobody Wins.” He has gone on to release nine additional albums as a highly respected singer/songwriter, while continuing to have his material recorded by others. Notable highlights from the Foster songbook include The Mavericks’ “I Got You,” The Dixie Chicks’ cover of “Godspeed (Sweet Dreams),” Dierks Bentley’s recording of “Sweet and Wild,” Pat Green’s Top 40 single “Three Days,” Jack Ingram’s Top 20 single “Measure of a Man,” Keith Urban’s chart-topping take on “I’m In,” as well as “Somebody Take Me Home” from Kenny Chesney’s #1 triple platinum album The Road and the Radio, and “I Knew You That Way” from Luke Bryan’s multi-platinum #1 album Tailgates & Tanlines. The long list of additional artists who’ve recorded Radney’s songs includes Guy Clark, Hootie & The Blowfish, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Brooks & Dunn, Gary Allan, Kenny Loggins, and, Darius Rucker.
Bill Lloyd pulled a quick change of personnel plan on Wednesday when his electric band’s regular bassist had a baby arrive in the family. The drummerless trio of Bill, Jim Hoke on steel and Hags Haggerty on bass eased nicely through a mix of originals and covers, which is Bill’s way. “In A Perfect World” was light and danceable. “Coconut Grove” had breezy jazz chords. And the highlight was a dynamic take on the “Across The Universe,” a reminder of just what a remarkable melody that song has. Its mantra chorus, “Nothing’s gonna change my world” felt particularly calming under the circumstances. Full Review HERE.
