In 1955, the Supreme Court instructed the states to begin desegregation plans with "all deliberate speed." This episode of Justice Above All highlights the complexities of realizing equal educational opportunities through desegregation. We explore how even decades after Brown, schools in America today are deeply segregated and unequally funded by race and class. We discuss what is truly needed to achieve the goal of desegregation, promoting equitable educational opportunities for America's students. This episode of Justice Above All examines how the Supreme Court interpreted the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), and how today's legal arguments decontextualize the Amendment's historical context in which it was ratified—during Reconstruction, to secure full citizenship and legal equality for formerly enslaved Black people. Today, multiple Supreme Court decisions reflect an inaccurate and ahistorical reading of the Reconstruction Amendments—the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth—which were enacted to dismantle the legacy of slavery and secure full citizenship and equal protection under the law for all people of African descent.Today's host is Karla McKanders, Director of the Thurgood Marshall Institute. This episode of Justice Above All highlights the centrality of birthing centers, which provide historically informed and culturally competent care to Black birthing people, to the realization of reproductive justice. We will discuss a wave of new state-level regulations that are severely impacting the ability of midwives and other birthing center staff to provide their services. We will also explore how these attacks on birthing centers relate to historic efforts to unwind progress towards reproductive justice. If you've listened to Roots Music Rambler much at all you know Frank and Falls are suckers for the new wave of retro-sounding Americana and Country artists. (See our previous episode with Kimmi Bitter.) When we first heard Logan Ledger, the same fascination kicked in. With sounds reminiscent of Marty Robbins, Jim Croce and The Byrds, it was easy to see why this Bay Area product was reclaiming the title of purveyor of California Country in early album reviews. His debut record in 2020 was produced by T. Bone Burnett. His sophomore effort, “Golden State,” was produced by none other than Shooter Jennings. And it's magnificent. Ledger joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about his albums, his sound and how a long-time Nashville singer-songwriter found his way into the professional musician space by finding and amplifying his own style. Falls shares his thoughts on a weird Jim Morrison documentary and he and Frank offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week as well. Songwriters and storytellers are at the core of Americana music. Few conversations in the genre go very long without the mention of names like John Prine, Jason Isbell, Gillian Welch and others. Most of those folks flocked to Nashville at one time or another to get a publishing deal, cut some records and try to make it in music. Gabe Lee never had to flock to Nashville. He was born and raised there. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, his mother a pianist, Lee studied to be a classical concert pianist as a kid. Adolescence derailed those plans and Gabe joined garage bands and caught the music bug in a different way. He now has emerged as one of Nashville's most promising singer-songwriters. His four albums have shown a maturation into an artist who has been compared to the Prines, Isbells and Welches of the world. He even tells a story of his in-laws thinking of him as the Asian John Prine, a title he's proud to represent. Lee sat in with Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about his upbringing and influences, his albums and his music. We discussed everything from listening rooms to college professors. Lee's latest album Drink the River came out in 2023. He says he's intentionally taking time to build up a catalogue of “bangers” for a new LP, which he admits may not come out for another year. But he continues to drop singles, play tours opening for the likes of American Aquarium and dotting music festivals, and sit in with cool podcasts. Frank and Falls also talk about their own musical abilities (or lack thereof) and offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. Algorithms and predictive technologies are being used to an increasing extent in housing (i.e., tenant screening, lending, appraisals, housing advertising). While algorithms have the potential to increase equity by removing human bias from decision-making, there is very little transparency and oversight over these tools and there is a real threat that these technologies are in fact replicating and amplifying existing bias and discrimination. In this episode of Justice Above All, Thurgood Marshall Institute researchers speak with three experts on the risks and promise of algorithms in the housing sector. For more information on this episode, please visit: tminstituteldf.org/justice-above-all.This episode was produced by Lauren O'Neil. The mountains of Appalachia have produced some of the most memorable music in recent memory. From Dwight Yoakam to Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson to Tyler Childers, plus up-and-comers like Brit Taylor and Leah Blevins, there's beautiful tunes in “them-thar hills.” Cait Justice's debut album Angel Teeth from sonaBlast Records offers a new entry in the fresh voices from Eastern Kentucky. The 20-something college student from Pikeville, Ky., now resides in Louisville. Within weeks of hitting town, she played a few open-mic and listening rooms, was recommended to sonaBlast's Gill Holland, and found herself recording a debut album in Louisville's famed La La Land Studios. Justice sat in with Frank and Falls on the latest episode of Roots Music Rambler to talk about her sudden insertion into the Louisville and Americana music scene, her background in music, and what it's like to be at the beginning of what promises to be a meteoric rise to music relevance. Frank and Falls also talk about the impact their respective mothers had on their interest in music and offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. Despite being the only elected law enforcement officials, sheriffs operate with impunity. In fact, many people are not aware of the sweeping power that sheriffs hold over law enforcement, jails, and to an increasing extent national politics and election administration. In this episode of Justice Above All, we highlight the role of sheriffs in our law enforcement systems and discuss how sheriffs are breaking into national politics. It is well past time to hold sheriffs accountable and rein in their unchecked powers. For more information on this episode, please visit: tminstituteldf.org/justice-above-all.This episode was produced by Lauren O'Neil and Ananya Karthik. Folk rockers The Mallett Brothers are back with a new album on April 4 called “Higher up in the Hills.” Luke and Will Mallett joined us on Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the album, the first couple of singles from it, 15-years of making it in independent music without leaving their home state of Maine and more. The brothers who front the band are actually from folk music royalty. Their father, David Mallett, is a well-known folk singer who wrote “The Garden Song” popluarized by Pete Seeger, John Denver and others. We talked about growing up around their famous dad, his impact on their music, and collaborations with him over the years. The Mallett Brothers also share the story behind another fun collaboration – with legendary keyboardist Chuck Leavell on his PBS series “America's Forests with Chuck Leavell.” Falls also kicks off the episode with perhaps the most impassioned rant he's ever embarked upon, pleading with people to stop complaining about cross-genre artists and the hate toward specific sub-genres of music. This episode of Justice Above All discusses voter challenges and voter turnout ahead of the November 5, 2024 election. Our guests explain how voter intimidation and voter suppression tactics continue to pose systemic barriers to Black voters. Even while this is occurring, Black voices are not being completely silenced: organizers are building Black political power in the South and celebrating major wins. Ahead of the November 2024 election, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) won two lawsuits which resulted in new, majority-Black congressional districts being created in Alabama and Louisiana. As a result, Black voters succeeded in electing three candidates of their choice to represent them in the House of Representatives (Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell in Alabama and Cleo Fields in Louisiana). Alabama and Louisiana are just two examples of places that illustrate the occurrence of some of the myriad forms of voter suppression tactics, as well as the effectiveness of voter advocacy in empowering Black voters to enact their right to vote. There's nothing we love more on Roots Music Rambler than digging into the stories behind songs, albums and artists, especially when geography and place have an impact there. That's why this episode stands out as one of our favorites as Tyler Grant joined us to talk about his new album, his journey through bands and solo work and more. No one digs into a story as well as Grant does and you'll note that right away as we talked about his latest single and upcoming album, Flatpicker, which is due out in March. And the album title is certainly appropriate. Grant is a National Flatpicking Champion and internationally recognized guitar virtuoso. He was also the lead singer and songwriting engine behind the band Grant Farm. It was such a pleasure to have him join us. He even became the first RMR guest to admit to committing a crime. (Ha! Listen to learn more.) We also learned more about his path through many musical genres to become a bluegrass and folk star. Falls shares his birthday experience meeting and seeing Joy Oladokun (his favorite). It's no secret that the Roots Music Rambler team loves a good music festival. But as we've discussed before, there are perhaps too many of them and the costs continue to skyrocket for fans. It just so happens that there exists an entire podcast and YouTube show dedicated to music festivals and its host, Nate Riggs, is a friend of the program. This week on Roots Music Rambler, Frank and Falls dig in with Riggs to talk about the state of music festivals across the U.S. The conversation includes everything from the costs to the lineups to the experiences and more. Falls also shares news that his children want him to take them to Bonnaroo and he and Frank talk about the under-the-radar festivals worth attending. In 2023, The Heritage Foundation, a think tank focused on promoting conservative public policies, published Project 2025 as a blueprint to consolidate power within the executive, or the office of the president, and weaken democratic structures. In speaking with experts, this episode of Justice Above All breaks down Project 2025 and anticipates how its implementation will directly impact individuals within the Black community. The podcast will unpack how Project 2025 will transform the systems of justice and education in ways that hit at the core of what it means to be a citizen in the U.S. seeking safety, fairness, and dignity for ourselves, friends and family members. Our guests will simplify what's at stake for podcast listeners personally, how civil rights groups like LDF are fighting back, and what you can do to make a difference. For more information on this episode, please visit: tminstituteldf.org/justice-above-all.This episode was produced and interviews were conducted by Lauren O'Neil. There are few artists out there who fit the Americana music label by decidedly not fitting in any single box better than Jeff Shepherd. The northern Indiana native has been called rock, blues, outlaw country and punk. His music harkens back to 70s rock but has enough country influences to draw comparisons to southern rock and outlaw country artists, alike. Shepherd, which he now goes by as a single-named moniker, joined us on Roots Music Rambler to talk about his new single, “Settle Down,” and his plans for more new music in 2025. We talked about his time working in the steel mills, the struggles of an independent musician and his newest venture into fatherhood. His son was born a little over a year ago and the lifestyle change has been interesting, he says. Plus, Frank checks in on Falls who was weathering a snow storm during the recording and the duo talk about one getting to meet a couple of emerging artists at a recent show. The first time you hear Leah Blevins sing, you immediately notice a voice similar to Dolly Parton. As if that weren't enough to want to hear more, she belts out influences from Martina McBride, Loretta Lynn and even Stevie Nicks. And she's poised for a new album later in 2025 that could be the project that vaults her even higher in the country music scene. Blevins joined Frank and Falls on Roots Music Rambler to talk about what's coming in 2025. She heads to the studio in February to add to an already released single (Hundred Different Sides). The new project is the first of a two record deal, so the future is bright. Blevins was raised in Sandy Hook, Ky., a tiny little burg in the hills of Northeast Kentucky. It happens to be the home of another great country singer: Keith Whitley. We explored her musical journey, talked about her debut album (First Time Feeling) which came out in 2021, her influences, family and more. Plus, Falls reports back on Brent Cobb's first Ryman Auditorium headline show and both he and Frank talk about 2025 live show plans they've already got in the works. Well, 2024 is in the books and what a year we saw in Americana and Roots Music. From Sierra Ferrell's explosion to Beyonce's Cowboy Carter and crazy collaborations to new music from artists like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, The Secret Sisters, Marcus King and Dwight Yoakam, the year was one for the books. Since this was the first full calendar year Roots Music Rambler existed (we debuted in September of 2023), we thought we would start an annual tradition of recapping the year with our top songs, albums and artists, plus do a little where-are-they-now rundown of previous show guests to keep everyone thinking about and talking about the music we all love. In this episode Frank and Falls run down their top 10 songs and albums of 2024, proclaim their top artist, group and newcomer of the year, and call out a couple of artists worthy of praise for innovating in the genre in 2024. But, to be clear, our philosophy on Roots Music Rambler is tied to a belief that music is not a competition. Rankings and bests are simply fodder for conversation and discovery. These lists are just our individual opinions. We want to hear yours as well. So comment on our social media posts about the rankings and share your favorites for 2024 or what you're excited about for 2025. Contrary to Mars Hill lore, Mark Driscoll didn't plant his church alone. Though he prized the image of a solo, entrepreneurial pastor, Driscoll found early success thanks to two co-planters, a sending church, and a network of support. And three thousand miles away in Boca Raton, Florida, the concept of the Acts 29 church network was already taking shape as an offshoot of the Spanish River Church Planting Network. Church planting requires a certain audacity, and in the early 1970's nobody had more than David Nicholas. Founder of Spanish River Church, David's burden for evangelism took shape in mentoring relationships with pastors starting congregations of their own. A planter himself, David empathized with those who felt lonely in that particular calling, and he sought to encourage and empower leaders by offering them community -- a network in which they could receive the care, training and accountability to do their jobs well. In this episode of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper invites us into the room with David Nicholas and Mark Driscoll -- two church planters with widely divergent visions for what constituted successful church growth. Tracing the Acts 29 network from its beginnings, Cosper asks whether any leadership potential is worth overlooking red flags, and whether the broader church actually has what it takes to mentor young leaders with issues of character. “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” is a production of Christianity Today Executive Producer: Erik Petrik Produced, written, edited, and hosted by: Mike Cosper Additional editing by Resonate Recordings and Matt Linder Associate produced by Joy Beth Smith Music, sound design, and mixing: Kate Siefker Theme song: “Sticks and Stones” by King's Kaleidescope Closing song: “Citizens” by Jon Guerra Graphic Design: Bryan Todd Social Media: Nicole Shanks Editorial consulting: Andrea Palpant Dilley, Online Managing Editor Christianity Today Editor in Chief: Timothy Dalrymple Learn more about your ad choices. As success grew at Mars Hill, Mark Driscoll's ministry dreams expanded. With the advent of the multi-site church and advances in technology, a leader could move beyond the mundanity of local place and community to spread his message far afield, fulfilling his own great commission literally to the ends of the earth. With a talented team and generous budget at his fingertips, Mark dreamed big. 50,000 church members. A New York Times bestseller. The most prominent media distribution channel on the Internet. But when you undermine the foundations of a church, you shouldn't be surprised when the building comes tumbling down around you. When technology removes the limits to access, you shouldn't be surprised when it also sings the alluring call of worldly success. When you call others to deep sacrifice for your own ambitions, you begin to count the bodies under the bus. In this episode of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper explores Mars Hill's “mission accomplished” cultural moment when Mark shifted his gaze from Seattle to cities and success benchmarks beyond. With incisive journalism and compassionate engagement, Cosper paints the picture of a wounded church—sheep dispersed and isolated by technology, expendable to the mission of a shepherd gone wayward. And he asks us to consider whether our adoption of gospel-amplifying tactics has clouded our vision of its good, true and beautiful message. “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” is a production of Christianity Today Executive Producer: Erik Petrik Produced, written, edited, and hosted by: Mike Cosper Additional editing by Resonate Recordings and Matt Linder Associate produced by Joy Beth Smith Music, sound design, and mixing: Kate Siefker Theme song: “Sticks and Stones” by King's Kaleidescope Closing song: “The Bridge” by Taylor Leonhardt Graphic Design: Bryan Todd Social Media: Nicole Shanks Editorial consulting: Andrea Palpant Dilley, Online Managing Editor Christianity Today Editor in Chief: Timothy Dalrymple Learn more about your ad choices. In 2006, Mark Driscoll met with a group of Seattle pastors who were worried about Mars Hill's public witness. Mark had risen to prominence with pugilistic bravado, and local leaders expressed concern that his tone and language about women and, in this particular instance, pastors' wives hurt the perception of the church in their largely unchurched city. Despite their best efforts to connect on common ground, the meeting's leaders counted the event a failure. Remarkable success had isolated Mark from the average person on whom his words fell. His institution had insulated him from critique. The meeting revealed clearly that power protected Mark from accountability. Your pastor doesn't need outsized fame and acclaim to fall prey to the seduction of power, and neither do you. In this episode of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper looks to the world of sports to illustrate how power corrupts and how, when we abdicate our roles as gatekeepers for one another, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Step onto the basketball courts at Indiana University and behind the pulpit at Mars Hill to see how power becomes a strong drug that justifies abuse, keeps truth from speaking, and distances us from our shared humanity. “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill” is a production of Christianity Today Executive Producer: Erik Petrik Produced, written, edited, and hosted by: Mike Cosper Additional editing by Resonate Recordings and Matt Linder Associate produced by Joy Beth Smith Music, sound design, and mixing: Kate Siefker Theme song: “Sticks and Stones” by King's Kaleidescope Closing song: “Anger” by Treva Blomquist Graphic Design: Bryan Todd Social Media: Nicole Shanks Editorial consulting: Andrea Palpant Dilley, Online Managing Editor Christianity Today Editor in Chief: Timothy Dalrymple Learn more about your ad choices. Viva a revolução do áudio!! Eles adicionaram as seguintes marcas: bloco, transcrição, financiamento, localização e capítulos. This weekend, I was caught up on all my subscribed podcasts and wanted something to listen to while walking the dog. So I actually opened my SiriusXM app and found the week's "Pop2Kountdown" - a snapshot of the Top 30 songs this week during a specific year in the 2000's. It's hosted by my former Syracuse classmate and all around good guy Rich Davis, who does a phenomenal job. For me, the sentimental value is off the charts. I graduated college in 2002, and started full-time in radio in 2004. So if there's a song from that time, I can generally tell you which radio station I played it at, and there's usually a funny story too. My point is this. I listen to a LOT of people talking - podcasts about the news, politics, sports, you name it. And it can burn you out. And with us spending less time in cars, we may not listen to music as much. Throw something on once in awhile, and escape.OK, this is a podcast about podcasts, so let's get caught up. Apple still has the lion's share of in-app listening, but there are actually MORE podcasts now in Spotify. Apple has roughly 1.7 million shows, but Spotify is up at 1.9 million. So that's who has the most shows - what about the most listening? I told you in November that Buzzsprout says Spotify listening is quickly catching up to Apple. Well, not according to Libsyn. Apparently the jury is still out. https://podcastbusinessjournal.com/libsyn-apple-still-dominates-by-far/?vgo_ee=MYFFchsNQquCI9pBrYt34RwUnRnlmwiuCIJkd9A7F3A%3DAlso, Spotify released their top shows of 2020. They are, in order:The Joe Rogan ExperienceTED Talks DailyThe Daily (New York Times)The Michelle Obama PodcastCall Her DaddyAll the stress of 2020 got you up at night? Some would suggest listening to a light hearted podcast in bed. But here's a podcast designed to help you fall asleep, It's called Sleep Cove - here's the story from PodNews. https://podnews.net/press-release/sleep-cove?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-11-27A service called Poise claims to turn your text into speech - not with AI, but with professional voice actors - with rates of $11 for every 500 words. I'm intrigued, but don't know much about them: https://www.narratedbypoise.com/And finally, Resonate Recordings says it's best to publish your podcast super early in the morning, and in the middle of the week. As for me, I'm sticking to my current schedule for 5 Minute Fridays - partly for consistency, and partly because I don't want to change the name. https://resonaterecordings.com/2018/05/when-to-release-your-podcast/?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-11-27

He shares with Michael how and why he became a doctor and how he intentionally instilled passion and drive in his own children. In an unusually tired and disinterested episode Ted, Ronnie, and Barnabas rant half heartedly about the following: TGCs response to women's MMA and Ronda Rousey RHE's twitter fight with TGC about women's MMA Proposed cage matches between TGC and various Twitter opponents Books we started but did not finish Thank you to our sponsors, Logos Bible Software and Resonate Recordings.
In this episode of The Happy Rant Ted, Ronnie, and Barnabas tackle the pressings of the pressing topics for your listening pleasure, information, and edification. Or something like that. Asking celebrity pastors for money Kanye and Trump: a match made in heaven, or the other place RHE trolling Tim Keller on Twitter - or did she *really* not understand him? Our least favorite Christmas carols As always, this episode is brought to you by Resonate Recordings. Mark and Jake do a phenomenal job with a whole range of audio services and have saved our bacon more than once (like this week). Check them out at ResonateRecordings.com.
In this episode of The Happy Rant podcast Barnabas, Ted, and Ronnie do the usual: tackle pressing, urgent, annoying, amusing, and timely topics. Christmas parades - predictably Barnabas despises them, but what about Ronnie, the Christmas Elf? The awkwardness of Erectile Dysfunction ads, especially with kids in the room The pressure people feel to represent themselves as something online - not falsely, but the expectations to respond, like, follow, etc. in certain ways in order to be seen a certain way. And of course we ought to remind you of the incredible opportunity to bedazzle your life with Happy Rant swag. Go to MissionalWear.com, search "Happy Rant" and load up on the awesome gear they have put together featuring our logo. We also want to thank the guys at Resonate Recordings who do all our editing and mastering.
