“at the Manor House in consultation with his two colleagues” [VALL] One of the great bits of fun of scanning the Sherlock Holmes stories is trying to determine the locations for some of the stories. In the case of The Valley of Fear, one of these identifications was made early on by Harold Wilmerding (H.W.) Bell. But his commitment to the Canon would be dashed a decade and a half later by a serendipitous discovery from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself, plus some intrepid footwork by James Montgomery. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur and religions reporter Canaan Lidor join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. President Isaac Herzog, fresh from his trip to the United States, spent yesterday evening visiting each of the major party leaders, trying to find some common ground. We hear how Rettig Gur sees the events of yesterday playing out. Yesterday began with a prayer for unity at the Western Wall. Lidor tells us what one of the organizers, Malka Puterkovsky, an influential Talmud teacher who lives in the settlement of Tekoa, explained about the motivations for the event. On Thursday of last week, an editorial in Yated Ne'eman -- an influential newspaper aligned with the United Torah Judaism political party -- seemed to push for compromise on some elements of the judicial overhaul, including the reasonableness bill. Is this a change of heart? Rettig Gur finishes the program by explaining who may be to blame for the deep-seated lack of trust felt in Israel today. Discussed articles include: ‘Time of emergency': Dueling overhaul rallies as Herzog makes final bid for compromise Activists on both sides of overhaul debate hold mass Western Wall prayer for unity Key Haredi newspaper questions wisdom of continued backing of judicial overhaul As judiciary fight reaches a climax, both sides set to lose Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. In today's longform weekend podcast - Glenn gives us his usual legal recap of the week. First story: Dueling briefs. Attorneys for Donald Trump have filed a motion in court to try to postpone his Florida classified documents trial. Following this, Special Counsel Jack Smith replied with his own brief telling Judge Cannon - Trump's filing had no legal basis to postpone the trial indefinitely. Second story: House Blames FBI. During a tense hearing - the House judiciary committee led by congressman Jim Jordan accused FBI Director Chris Wray of being partisan. Are they discrediting the FBI to help Trump in the January 6th investigation? Or are they hoping to interfere with the January 6th probe because they are afraid they will be charged? Then, Fulton County DA Fani Willis has impaneled 2 grand juries in the Georgia election tampering probe. Glenn explains what a grand jury is and what the 5th Amendment says about them. He gives us a master class on how they are selected and how they decide on cases. Two cases concerning the FDA's approval of Mifepristone, Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. United States Food and Drug Administration (AHM v. FDA) and Washington v. United States Food and Drug Administration (WA v. FDA) have caused significant conversations concerning the FDA's approval processes, statutes of limitation for challenges to approvals, standing, administrative review, and judicial authority. The cases present interesting questions concerning the regulatory process, separation of powers, and the role of judges. In AHM v. FDA, a judge out of the Northern District of Texas blocked the FDA's approval of the drug, meaning it could no longer be distributed as an FDA-approved drug. The same day, in WA v. FDA, however, a separate district judge ruled the FDA was being overly restrictive and barred it from altering the regulatory status of Mifepristone in approximately a third of the country. Perhaps due to the drastic split between the courts, both cases have quickly ascended through the courts of appeals. In this program a panel of experts discuss these cases, their substance, and the possible ramifications of future decisions. Featuring: --Thomas Jipping, Senior Legal Fellow, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, The Heritage Foundation--Adam Unikowsky, Partner, Jenner & Block LLP--[Moderator] Jennie Lichter, Deputy General Counsel, The Catholic University of America

We here at Going Terribly have a history of jinxing beloved celebrities who die suddenly before their momentous birthdays, so to be safe, we have waited until our dear friend, Gennie Adams, was safely ensconced in her fifth decade before inviting her onto the podcast. Let's just hope she doesn't contract a touch of the gonorrhea from the muddy water that she'll be crawling through this weekend at the Spartan Beast race! Other discussion topics may include: - How to bring back the beloved deceased...and make them murderers - Racing obstacles, such as fire jumps, monkey bars, and burping up breast milk - Celebrating birthdays, but not a year of racists - 911 or wrestling match: How would you recover a kidnapped relative? - Poo Songs. Synopsis On today's date in 1727, the opera season in London ended early when rival Italian prima donnas, Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, came to blows on stage during a performance of an opera by Bononcini. Londoners were shocked, but not surprised. Trouble had been brewing between the two, egged on by partisan behavior from their rabid English fans, who (depending on their preference) greeted them with either extravagant applause and bravos, or catcalls, hissing, and, as one contemporary put it, “other great indecencies.” It was all terrific box-office, as Handel must have realized and so worked their rivalry into HIS opera Alessandro, in which the hero finds it hard to decide between the attractions of the dueling divas. Handel prudently gave exactly the same number of solos to each soprano. Even so, according to Handel's first biographer, years earlier he had threatened to toss Cuzzoni out the window when, during a rehearsal she refused point blank to sing one of his arias. Madam, Handel is quoted as roaring as he dragged her towards the window, “I know you are a veritable devil, but I would have you know that I am Beelzebub, the KING of all the devils!” Music Played in Today's Program George Frederic Handel (1685 - 1759) aria, fr Alessandro Lisa Saffer, soprano; Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra; Nicholas McGegan, conductor.
